Elder Quiet-before-the-dawn comes for dinner unannounced that Monday evening where Winna is given The Letter. I promise that this event will be included in part 12 NtTL and likely end on the note: "My sister is dead but she is survived by a son. A son named Jake!" cries Winna. Oh. I've looked at a US map and did some Internet research on Rosebud, South Dakota. By crow's flight, Havre and Rosebud are only 563 miles between them. Let's have the three drive over there to visit Jake! Several good reasons to do so: * After Winna calls the school on Tuesday, she promises to come out to see Jake the next day. Air flight is expensive as you've pointed out and with so little time to book a flight, there may not be any seats available for three people. Also, Mike will discover when he tries using his credit card to purchase that desktop computer and other stuff from Wal-Mart on Monday that he needs photo I.D. which was surrendered to the Montana motor vehicles when he applied for a Montana driver's license. It's being sent to him in the mail and not yet arrived. Anyway, after 911, you have to have acceptable photo I.D. to get on a plane! Mike can't therefore. * Mike will use his pickup truck to drive those thirteen hours with Winna taking her turn at the wheel. They'll leave Tuesday evening to make it by noon Wednesday at Rosebud. Yup, tired campers will they be. Sorry. I can't foresee how to get Charlie into NtTL other than what we'll see of Jake's 'little brother' at the school. As it is, Jake will be sleeping in that long narrow laundry room since there isn't a third bedroom in Winna's house. Charlie may appear in story as flashbacks in memory once Jake trusts Jessie to Share with him events from his life. I'll not say more about Jake here as you have two previous letters from me to respond to. I NEED THAT LETTER from the headmaster completed since it'll appear in part 12 I'm finishing by next week! 5/1/05 Luke wrote: I'm beginning this letter early on Sunday morning. I want to respond to your letter in terms of providing specific information on how the Rosebud Indian Mission School might look and who and what the visitors from Montana might encounter. I will probably be writing this off and on today but will send whatever I have finished off to you before today is done! I hope my "letter" from Fr. Sean McMillan was OK. I didn't say so but I'm sure you realize that you can change or edit it as you like. However, I thought it would provide you with a kind of model letter of the sort I would write were I McMillan and writing about a kid in a school I was running. I basically took your letter and polished it a bit. I also created a kind of letterhead including that part "Established by the Society of Jesus, 1973". As I look at it now I should have reduced the font size for that phrase but I wanted to give you the idea of what a letterhead from there might look like. While it's on my mind, you mention in one of your letters about Winna, Mike, and Jessie driving to Rosebud. You said that Jake would ride back to Montana in the back of the pickup truck. Given the 563 miles that you said it was between Rosebud and Havre, it would take them about 8 to 10 hours of driving. That's a long time to be sitting in the back of the truck exposed to the weather. Up in this area, it's illegal to ride people in the back of a pickup truck. It has to do with the laws about wearing seatbelts and also the probability that in a car wreck, somebody sitting in the back would be thrown out and injured if not killed. Also what happens if it rains? Or if it's sunny and the temperatures are in the 90s or something? I like the idea of driving. It can give everybody a real chance to talk to each other, I guess. However with Jake in the back of the truck, there certainly cannot be too much talking going on. Given Winna's size, having all four of them in the cab of the truck for that amount of time would be uncomfortable to say the least. Ideally, it would be that just Mike and Winna go on the ride with Jessie staying behind to begin his shaman training with Grandfather who, after all, doesn't have too much time to live. That way, Jake could ride back with them inside the cab of the truck. You don't think that Winna could borrow somebody's car or something like that, do you? It would be a more comfortable ride than in a truck. I know this from experience from having driven to Michigan and back in my partner's pickup truck! However, a car could accommodate all four of them inside it and give everybody a chance to interact including giving Mike and Jessie the chance to "probe" Jake about what he's thinking and feeling inside. I know I should use a different word than "probe" because it sounds so "aliens from outer space"! But I can't think of another word just now. Anyway think about it. I think that driving does make a lot of sense from many point of view as follows: * It would give the four of them the chance to be together for an extended period. * It would let the Montana-threesome have transportation to drive around - to the court for Guardianship, to visit with Dr. Karl, and so forth. * The school would probably be out of town so even if they flew in, they would have to have some way of getting to it. Driving themselves would provide this. You mentioned that they have car trouble and Mike will be almost late getting to court on Monday. Maybe Jake could help with the car repairs. In any case, adversity like that has a way of pulling people together. Maybe he could really be the "gentleman" and be especially concerned for Winna's comfort or something like that. Maybe Jake and Mike could hitchhike to the nearest town to find a garage to come back to fix and/or tow their broken down car. Or maybe Jessie and Mike could hitchhike into the nearest garage leaving Winna and Jake alone to talk. I can imagine Winna talking about her little sister whom she helped raise and Jake listening with rapt attention since he's never heard this. Or maybe this could occur in the car on the way back. That way Mike would witness it and it could be part of the story. So by all means keep them driving to South Dakota but make it so everybody is inside the truck's cab or they borrow a car. Maybe that guy at the garage where Mike got his truck rehabilitated has a car they could borrow. Maybe Mike could temporarily trade his truck with somebody for the use of their car while the Montana-threesome uses the car to drive to Havre. Maybe Mike could rent a car. We've actually done that when we've been driving to see either of our families and don't want to put the put all those miles on our own vehicle or we had doubts that our own vehicles could make it. Around here, Enterprise Rent-A-Car has great rates if you pickup and drop off the car at the same location. Maybe Mike has his doubts that either his or Winna's pickup trucks will make that long a trip. And then on the way back, to Mike's dismay, the rental car has trouble on the road! I like your development of Jake's story on pages... All that you say makes sense. Good job with this. And, yes, Dr. Karl would be holding a crying, terrified teen as Jake tells him about his mother's death and his horror at realizing that he's following in her footsteps by selling his body for money to strangers. It could be a real "moment of truth" for Jake in terms of understanding of himself and of his longing to be loved and parented. Although he may not consciously realize it, he is getting just that from Dr. Karl at this moment. Your chronology in terms of age/date calculations is great as I said in an earlier letter! ROSEBUD INDIAN MISSION SCHOOL: Rosebud Indian Mission School, called simply the Rosebud School by people who live there, was established by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1973 (you can certainly change this year if you want; I just pulled it out of my head.) The Jesuits are an order established by St. Ignatius Loyola in Spain. He was a soldier and his order is structured in a military fashion. The head of the order, voted in by the members, is called the Superior General. When a man joins the Jesuits he may not get ordained until he's been in the order for 13 years or so. During those 13 years of training, he spends a few years teaching in one of the Jesuit high schools or colleges. So maybe some of those not-yet-ordained-as-priests Jesuits have rotated through the Rosebud School. They would have been younger men and would have related to the kids at the school quite well. However, they would have also been pulled out at the end of their rotation and sent back for ordination. Jesuits also are very well known missionaries as was portrayed in the excellent movie "Mission" staring Robert DeNiro, Jeremy Irons, and Liam Neeson. The Jesuits are sometimes referred to as the Catholic Church's Marine Corps. They are very well educated and run excellent schools. So Rosebud School would be founded and run by the Jesuits. Probably originally many of the staff would have been Jesuits but as the years rolled on and the Jesuits experienced the drop off of vocations to their order, the number of Jesuits there would have become smaller. In Rosebud School's case, I'm hypothesizing that it is headed by a Jesuit, Fr. Sean McMillan, who is the Headmaster which is what the "Principal" of such a place would be called. Maybe there would be some other Jesuits there but it is entirely possible that by 2003, McMillan would be one of only two or three Jesuits there. Maybe one of them would be an elderly Jesuit basically in retirement there. Maybe another would be a Jesuit who has had serious trouble with alcoholism and was sent there by the Provincial Superior of that section of the Jesuits to "dry out" and also because it's isolated enough that he wouldn't give too much scandal. That is, he wouldn't scandalize people with his alcoholic behavior like he would if he were a parish priest or if he were teaching in a city high school or college. So Rosebud School would be run by Fr. McMillan but staffed by mostly lay people - both male and female. Rosebud is a school for only boys. There is probably a "sister school" somewhere in the area run by nuns which is for girls. Maybe the kids from the two schools would get together periodically for various events including dances for the high school age kids. The Catholic tradition in such schools, however, was to keep the sexes separated so no hanky-panky would be going on! You and I know, Vince, that there is even more opportunity for hanky-panky among guys living in such proximity. And we know that it did occur there including with Jake. The Jesuits would not be naive about this and would not be shocked that it is going on. They would not condone it but they would not be shocked were it discovered. Rosebud would also, in the Jesuit tradition, provide Jake and the other students with an excellent education. The Jesuits are known for that. Georgetown University, for instance, in Washington, DC, is a Jesuit university. So Jake would be coming to Montana with an excellent academic background. It is possible that the Montana school authorities would give him some sort of academic testing to determine his grade and discover that he's more than ready for 11th grade in the fall if not for some kind of advanced placement. Rosebud is also a non-profit institution. This means that people can donate things to the school and claim a tax exemption. Consequently, as I've said before, the school is loaded with computers and computer equipment. Large corporations who are upgrading their computers will donate the used but perfectly good computers and equipment to the school for a large tax write-off. One of the problems with a place like Rosebud is keeping themselves from being absolutely swamped with "donations" like this. You know computers a lot better than I do so you'd have a better idea of what they might have. I'm sure that the school would have Internet access. This would be there as a way of allowing the students to use the Internet in their studies. However, they could also either legitimately or illegitimately have e-mail names like through Yahoo or Hotmail or some other free e-mail site. Maybe the school would have its own e-mail system but since that has the probability of somebody in authority looking at the e-mails going out or coming in, maybe Jake and Charlie and others have their own private e-mail accounts from one of these free e-mail sites. Rosebud would also have young adult volunteers working there. The Jesuit high schools, colleges, and universities all have programs that allow their students to come to work for free at places like Rosebud either for the summer or for a school year as an experience in community service. Their room and board would be taken care of by the school but they would not be receiving any salary. So the school would have seen a number of dedicated, altruistic volunteers rotating through the school. One or more of them might have been interested in the boys at the school sexually. This might have included guys, of course, but could have included women volunteers too. Should any of these volunteers be discovered to be sexually involved with one of the kids at the school, he/she would have been sent home immediately. In Virginia this would have constituted child sexual abuse and the school would have been obligated to report the activity to Child Protective Services and the man/woman would have been arrested. However, in South Dakota and on the Indian Reservation, I'm not sure what would happen. In any case, the Jesuits would have sent the person home. Rosebud would probably be away from any city and would probably consist of several buildings. They would probably be one story buildings constructed in the least expensive way possible by the Jesuit Mission Society using volunteers locally as much as possible. Since it was established in 1973, it has been operating for 30 years and probably has a developed corps of volunteers ranging from people who might send out mailings asking people in other parts of the country for financial contributions, people who help repair the buildings, lawyers who help with things like Guardianships, and, of course, "big brothers" for the boys like Dr. Karl is. The possible buildings that the Montana-threesome might tour would be as follows: Administration Building: This would be where Fr. McMillan's office would be. Also the school social worker's office would be here. School records would be here and fund raising would take place from this building. Fr. McMillan and whatever other Jesuits were there would probably live in this building in an area closed off to the public. This building would also have the nurse's office. The school nurse would handle any routine medical problems and would also have several beds in a room attached to it where sick kids would stay until they were better. It is also where doctors would examine kids in terms of routine physicals and so forth. They might have a volunteer doctor or doctors who would donate time to the school and come out once a month to have "doctor's hours" to see kids and maybe even any of the staff that needed help. The school social worker, Ms. Kathleen Klein, would have her office there. Dormitories: There might be two of these buildings holding a total of about 40 boys each for a school population of about 80 boys. One of them would be for the younger boys and the other would be for the older boys. They would have rooms where four boys would sleep in rooms each holding two sets of bunk beds. There would be one closet and each boy would share a chest of drawers with another boy; this would mean that two four-drawer chests of drawers would be in each room. All this would have been donated, probably. Maybe it would have been the castoffs from some Jesuit boarding high school in some major city. There is such a school in Bethesda, Maryland (near Washington, DC) called Georgetown Preparatory School. It is very prestigious and has students from rich families in the DC area as well as students who are the sons of rich people who live in other countries but who want their sons to get a Jesuit education in the United States. A place like that might periodically throw away their old stuff and buy new. After all, people are paying high tuition plus room & board for a place like that for their sons and they want "the best". So beds and other furniture including whatever is in the Administration Building would have been sent from places like Georgetown Prep School. Each dormitory would have a kind of apartment at one end which is where the adult lives who is in charge of the dormitory. Since this school is out in the middle of nowhere and housing might be a problem, maybe each dormitory has two such "apartments". The adults living there would also be non-married teachers at the school. The apartments would really be a bedroom plus bathroom. These adults would be called "dorm prefects" or something like that. Also each dormitory would have a room with toilets, urinals, and sinks. And there would be another room for showers. Probably it would be a large room with shower heads along one wall. It's called a gang shower and would provide no privacy at all. I doubt that there would be a bathtub but maybe so. Refectory: This is the term for dining hall. It would contain a large cafeteria type room where the boys eat. Probably there would be a table up front where the faculty also eats although it is possible that they might have their own dining room separately to give them some break and privacy from their life with the boys. It would also contain the kitchen. It would also contain a small guest dining room where the Headmaster would entertain guests or where visiting parents of kids might have a meal with their son in some semblance of privacy. This is where the Montana-threesome would eat with Jake and/or the Headmaster or Social Worker if they had meals there. In an effort to provide some parallel to family style eating, the food would be served in bowls and platters at each table by other boys who would be on kitchen duty for that month. Just like in a family where each kid has certainly "jobs" around the house, here at Rosebud School there is a daily "work period" and all the kids are assigned to various tasks around the school including kitchen/dining room duty. The tables might hold six or eight boys with the senior most boy being the one responsible for keeping order. It would be considered a great privilege to be in this role. Also it mixes up the ages so that older boys and younger boys have the chance to interact. The actual assignments to table would be changed about every three months. Chapel: This is where Mass would be said. In Jesuit boarding schools all of the kids have to attend morning Mass every day. I don't know what would be happening in 2003. However, they would certainly have to attend Mass there on Sundays. Maybe there would be some kind of morning or evening prayers there. Mass would be celebrated by Fr. McMillan or one of the other Jesuit priests there at the school. It would also be where the priest(s) would hear Confession. Classroom Building: This is where classes would be held. It would also contain the library where there would be banks of computers plus Internet access. Classes here would go from grades 1 through 12. The choice of subjects on the high school level here at Rosebud School is nonexistent. High school students would be required to take a traditional set of classes taught by a very small number of faculty. Only one foreign language is taught - Spanish - for instance. All students take one class of Religion each year so Jake has had 10 years of religion classes. Even though there are no electives at this very small school, the kids get an excellent "classical" education. So that's a total of six buildings: Two dormitories, one admin building, one refectory, one chapel, and one classroom building. As the Montana-threesome arrives at the school, parks in the parking area, and goes into the Administration Building, they would make their way to the Headmaster's Office. They would have been told this on the phone when they called and said they were coming. Fr. McMillan would have a secretary who would greet them with a big smile, ask them to be seated, and then she would go into Fr. McMillan's office to tell them they are there. The secretary would probably be a Native American woman belonging to the tribe of the Reservation where the school is located - probably Sioux, I would think. She would also be plump and would smile at Winna recognizing a "fellow traveler". Fr. McMillan would probably come out and greet all three of them. Then he would ask to speak with Winna alone at first. You know what they would talk about. In the meantime Mike and Jessie might sit in the secretary's office. Maybe they would strike up a conversation with her. She knows that she shouldn't but she wants to tell them about Jake because she clearly likes him. Also as is true with most school secretaries, she is "information central" for anything going on at the school. And like many secretaries, she does a certain amount of talking about things she really shouldn't. Of course, Mike and Jessie can both glean what she's thinking without her telling them. Maybe this is where either or both of them find out about the school suspicions about Jake prostituting. Fr. McMillan buzzes his secretary and asks her to go get Jake. She excuses herself and goes to the classroom building to get Jake out of class. As she brings him back through her office on the way to the Headmaster's office, he looks at and is looked at by Mike and Jessie. You can decide how much they reveal to each other in this encounter. Obviously Jake would not know who they are but they would know who he is. There would be the reunion scene in Fr. McMillan's office between Jake and Winna. After a moment's hesitation, Winna puts out her arms and Jake moves into them. Winna is crying but not saying anything. Jake begins to cry. Both just hold each other. Fr. McMillan has the good sense to sit there and shut up. Maybe the secretary has left the door ajar and all three of them waiting in her office witness this - that way it can be part of the story since Mike would be witnessing it. Maybe Winna would walk out and introduce Jake to Mike and Jessie. Maybe Fr. McMillan wants to talk privately with Winna about a change of Guardianship for Jake and asks Jake to show Mike and Jessie around the school. Of course, as they walk around through all the buildings described above, including Jake's bedroom. Maybe Jake can glean that Mike and Jessie are a couple. Maybe they can glean that he's interested in guys himself. Maybe Jake even asks "Are you guys a couple?" After all, he's no stranger to male-on-male sex. Maybe they say "Yes. Does that bother you?" At which point Jake can give an answer clearly indicating that it not only doesn't bother him but it very much intrigues him. Maybe he and Jessie talk some family talk like "Yeah, Mom has talked to me a lot about her sister, Judy. She misses her very much even though she left a long time ago." As they go through the Classroom Building on this tour with Jake, they visit the library and Mike's jaw drops when he sees all the computer equipment. You can add the detail of this. He asks Jake something about it and Jake answers him with quite a bit of computer sophistication. Both realize that they've found a "computer person" in the other! When they get back, Fr. McMillan invites them to join the school for lunch or dinner depending on what time of day they arrive. They will eat with Jake - just the four of them - in the Headmaster's dining room. Fr. McMillan wants to give Jake a chance to spend some time with Winna, her son, Jessie, and his friend, Mike. The boys who are working in the kitchen and dining room that day vie with each other to decide who will bring the food into the visitors because Jake is a very popular guy. In a school like this there are no secrets. Everybody knows the news about the discovery of Judy's death. Everybody knows that his Aunt has come from Montana along with these two young guys. Rumor has it that one of them is her son. But what about this White guy? Who is he, they wonder? Also they have seen Jake giving these two young men a tour of the school. Maybe Charlie wins out and serves the food to the visitors in the dining room which will give Jake a chance to introduce Charlie to them. That evening at the motel (the school doesn't have a guest quarters to offer them) Winna talks with Mike and Jessie about her conversation with Fr. McMillan and her having decided to take full Guardianship of Jake assuming he's willing to go with them. And she wants to take him back to Montana with them when they leave. She tells them that she figures that maybe Jake can move into the laundry room for the time being. I'm not sure how Mike and Jessie react to this but they can see that she has made up her mind about bring Jake back to live with them. She tells them that Fr. McMillan has told her how Ms. Klein, the Social Worker, can go to court with her and with one of the "volunteer" attorneys the school can call upon, it can all be arranged. Jake will have to go along with them since the judge will ask him if he is willing to go with Winna. Maybe Mike and Jessie can drive into town and call on Dr. Karl while Winna and Jake are in the courthouse. Maybe Jake has already mentioned Dr. Karl (what do M&J pick up from Jake about Dr. Karl?) but certainly Fr. McMillan has mentioned that Dr. Karl has been Jake's Big Brother for several years. He knows that the two of them have gotten very close although he has no idea exactly how close they have gotten! However, Fr. McMillan is aware that Dr. Karl has been Jake's doctor since he also became his Big Brother. In a school like this where there is a lot of volunteer professional help, this is not unusual. So M&J might go into town to talk with him and obtain a copy of Jake's medical record to take back to Montana with them to eventually give to his new medical doctor in Montana. (Does the Reservation have a Blackfoot doctor? Maybe they need their own doctor and maybe Dr. Karl might provide that service at some future point after he moves to Havre.) At that time, of course, M&J pick up how very, very close Dr. Karl feels to Jake and that he is on the verge of tears at the prospect of Jake moving away. Maybe Jessie says that Dr. Karl is always welcome to visit them. Maybe Jessie gives Dr. Karl their home address and phone number. Maybe Mike gives Dr. Karl his e-mail address and Dr. Karl gives Mike his e-mail address. In any case when they leave Dr. Karl's office, they are aware of the intensity of the relationship between Jake and Dr. Karl and are determined to get more information from Jake about this at some future time. Maybe, as you have suggested, Dr. Karl decides that he can trust M&J. He tells them in "professional terms" his awareness that Jake has been having sex with older guys and accepting money for it. He assures the guys that Jake has no sexually transmitted diseases and, to his knowledge, Jake has stopped prostituting during the last year. He tells them that he only knows this because Jake came to him with an injury to his foreskin and eventually the truth came out. He also tells them that Fr. McMillan and the folks at the school do not know anything about this although they have become suspicious of late as to where Jake has gotten money to buy things for himself and for Charlie. Dr. Karl tells them that he has covered for Jake by telling Fr. McMillan that he has been giving Jake money to buy a few things for himself. While Fr. McMillan doesn't like the favoritism that Jake is being shown, he also doesn't want to discourage this generous donor from essentially giving money to the school. Fr. Karl tells them that they need to keep this information to themselves until and if Jake tells them about it himself. This is already much longer than I anticipated. But you asked for background and I hope I have given it to you. I hope that I've given you what you needed in terms of bring Jake into the story. You have good instincts about all this, Vince, and I don't have any worries that you're going to do something to Jake in the story that will upset me. My partner knows that I'm writing you a lot of detail about Jake. However, he really isn't interested in reading it. I think that he sees it as "my thing" which, in fact, it is. So I don't know how likely it is that he will be doing any sketches in the near future. Sorry. I periodically mention it to him but I don't think he's really interested in written erotic fiction like I am. 5/2/05 Vince wrote: THANK YOU for providing me with the detailed descriptions of Jake's school for the threesome. I won't 'discuss' with you now this information as that is unnecessary and takes away from my time to actually WRITE the story. I'd groaned inside when you spent paragraphs of letter about their drive back to Havre with Jake in back of the pickup. I've already decided that wouldn't work nor be safe for Jake as well as prevent 'quality' talk time on their trip home. Sorry. What's likely going to take place is that Winna, Jes and Jake will fly home Sunday while Mike returns to Havre alone in his truck. This is because Mike can't fly without I.D. and someone has to get the pickup home. There's no way that all four of them can fit in the pickup and no other vehicle will be available to them on short notice. I'll explain. Monday evening, Winna learns about her sister's death and that she's survived by a son. She wants to see Jake as soon as possible of course! It's too late that evening to call the school so Winna will do so from work on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mike checks out Expedia.com for air flights. Winna wants to leave Tuesday evening (after work) to arrive in Rosebud, SD. I've actually done some air flight searches to find cost, airlines and connections. Mike finds that the best scenario would be to drive down to Great Falls (from Havre's airport it adds SIXTEEN hours more flight time?!) and take a United Airlines flight (today's cost is $1,178 round trip with return on Sunday) that takes five hours from Great Falls with connections in Denver and landing in Pierre, SD which is the closest airport some fifty miles north of Rosebud. HOWEVER, I'll have Mike discover that on such short notice, there's no seats availability for Winna and Jes (Mike already realizes he can't fly with them without I.D.) to leave Tues. evening as Winna wants until Wednesday evening on Northwest Airlines where they'd see Jake on Thursday at the earliest. Winna would like Mike to come along but understands that his lack of I.D prevents him. It's going to cost Winna and Jes over $2,200 for round trip tickets as it is. From work on Tuesday, Winna is even more intent on seeing Jake at the earliest possible moment after speaking with the Headmaster. She's so upset that her boss allows her to go home early and to take the week off so she can see her sister's son, Jake. He suggests DRIVING down as South Dakota is only the next state over to the east. Winna rushes home with this intent in her head that saves them airline cost, allows Mike to come along (he'll return from their trip in time for next Monday's court) and leaving Tuesday late afternoon will see the threesome in SD at 3am Wednesday where they can sleep until Wednesday morning and then see Jake that day! Driving from Havre, MT to Rosebud, SD is 803 miles by road for a 13 hour, five minute trip according to Expedia.com. I've already plotted Mike's travel route that basically cuts south through Montana, goes into Wyoming and turns east a while to South Dakota that will reach Rosebud. It is raining Tuesday late afternoon when Mike agrees to drive them to see Jake. Winna's truck has a 'funny sound' in the engine and her brakes aren't that good. They'll take Mike's pickup. REMEMBER. AT this time, they are only planning on visiting Jake though Winna harbors the secret hope of taking the boy home with her. They drive fifteen hours with Mike and Winna taking turns at the wheel. Only restroom stops and to eat. They arrive near Rosebud on Wednesday at around 5am. Everyone is exhausted. Motel for sleep (six hours) that morning until 12 noon where Winna calls school to confirm she's arrived. Wednesday - see Jake and look around his school. Eat with Headmaster, meet teachers and friends. Get time alone to comfort teen and exchange family news. Thursday - Winna is more intent than ever to take Jake home. Over brunch with Headmaster, she reveals her desire to him and he is very understanding. He suggests they spend the day away from the school looking at the sights, get to know Jake better and really decide on this course of action while he prepares the paperwork. Jake returned to school in early evening and Winna confirms to Headmaster that she wants to take her sister's son home with her. Jake agrees as he wants to get away from his doomed path of following in his mother's footsteps and be with family. Friday - Judge's chamber with social worker walk-through to transfer Guardianship of Jake to Winna. Other activities that day (saying goodbye, sightseeing, etc.?) Saturday - Jake takes final exams. Other activities. Sunday - Mike drives them up to Pierre's airport. He starts trip home alone in his pickup. Monday - Mike barely makes it to court by driving straight there. Winna, Jes & Jake have already come home Sunday evening. Luke. This is a very basic outline of events that my fingers will try to follow but they have a mind of their own. Actual written story events flow from one to the next that can change original intentions. We'll see what unfolds. While Mike is away from Havre, events transpire there. The city council's investigation sadly only confirms Internal Affairs findings, though bias, clearing Lt. John Danielson of misconduct mainly through lack of evidence. Mike's cell guard sticks to his story that no taunting took place and without a video tape, it's his word against Mike's. Only Officer Weston's original complaint to Internal Affairs claiming that John told him he's seen to losing that tape cast doubt but John denies having said that to Weston. John knows he's under scrutiny so he's destroyed that tape obviously. I'd planned a raid on his home to find it. Won't happen. John is too smart and experienced a police officer to leave that kind of damning evidence around. Bill Ruston is cleared of misconduct charges against him brought by Internal Affairs/D.A. and he'll be reinstated as Havre Police Chief on Monday. Lt. John Danielson, though cleared of main charges, DID questionable things when ordering Mike taken to that padded cell 'for his safety', the copying over of surveillance tape where Mike claimed he was taunted by the guard (maybe John did 'lose' that tape as Weston said he heard John tell him but it's unproven) and when John had Mike brought in for questioning into his brother's murder without legal representation. Bill will ask John to take some time off to grieve for his brother. Obviously, those two men have no love lost between them now. Bill is captain again but he can't outright dismiss John from the police force. Mike will not find relief to his legal woes coming from his 'claim' of civil rights violations. Lack of evidence. Prosecutor Benton however did a naughty thing. When the Blackfoot Elders presented his D.A. boss their complaint letter and statements, Benton 'cleaned up' those five Havre officers' entry into the shaman's home to look for Mike where no search warrant had been issued. The judge only allowed Mike's trailer and Winna's home to be searched. Benton has a court clerk enter a false computer entry that added the shaman's address to the judge's original order of search. He presented this official looking list to Mr. Talbert at Tuesday's Discovery meeting buried with lots of other stuff though the main intent of that meeting is to scare Mike into accepting prosecution's plea bargain on threat of making Ron's diary public. Please note that Mike will be very depressed during the Jake visit because he's strongly considering accepting plea bargain so Ron's diary will be 'sealed' per Benton's offer at Tuesday's Discovery meeting. Yet getting away from Havre and his legal woes, Mike's attention will be focus on Winna's newly discovered nephew (cute boy at that!) so he'll warm up by Thursday. His Sunday drive home alone will be hard as he's returning to his troubles. Former D.A. Ralph James who's been introduced in NtTL already (on a news program where he explained what those technical charges against Capt. Ruston meant in laymen's terms) offers to assist Mr. Talbert in Mike's defense. This is on Wednesday when Mike is away on that trip to see Jake. Mr. Talbert allows Mr. James to view his client's file, in office for a few hours but won't share their defense strategy as Mike cannot be reached to accept this man as his new attorney. Mr. James notes that Mr. Talbert's copy of search warrant addresses he'd obtained weeks earlier only lists two residents while Benton's submission at Tuesday's Discover meeting now includes the shaman's address. Hmm. That's interesting. Ralph James was the former D.A. who lost reelection to the current D.A. He's never liked Benton. With his connections, Ralph checks out the search warrant discrepancy. It is in the court's computer. He meets with supervisor of records to have him 'check it out' and 'let me know what you find'. This supervisor finds NO paperwork in judge's file that allowed search of shaman's home by those five Havre officers. He tracks down computer entry clerk and she finally admits having made that false entry for Benton. Why? She owed Benton a favor when he didn't prosecute her for accepting bribes to enter false computer entries for others. That's how Benton operates in his position as prosecutor. He finds dirt on people in power so he can 'own' them such as the man in Internal Affairs, John Danielson and that court clerk. Ralph James is informed by court supervisor. That clerk is granted immunity by city attorney and she signs affidavit detailing Benton coercing her to make that false computer entry showing shaman's address on search warrant list. All this happens before Monday's court. When Mike barely makes it, he learns only then about Benton's criminal misconduct. Interestingly, it probably won't be mentioned in actual court where the judge is ruling on the three motions before her but she KNOWS, and Benton is notably absent in court. Judge grants prosecution's change of venue to Great Falls to hold trial there. Mr. Talbert's motion of pretrial hearing on alleged civil rights violation also granted. Mr. James is officially acknowledged as Mike's new attorney. Maybe 'attorney' Mr. James makes motion before the judge asking her to remove Benton as prosecutor in his client's trial. No reason given but judge says she'll take it under consideration. Mike wonders what that's about. Judge KNOWS that Benton is absent from court because he's been placed on admin. leave pending the investigation into his criminal misconduct. Ralph knows not to press this issue in open court as it's only in the beginning investigation phase for Benton but he wants his motion on record and to savor his sweet moment of revenge against the D.A. who won the election (instead of him), and he enjoys getting the current D.A.'s 'right hand man' in trouble. In a few days after Monday, the D.A. will drop that charge against Mike in a face saving move. Benton will be found guilty of criminal misconduct and that's when others who that man 'owned' will come forward from offers of immunity to say how Benton coerced them to do illegal acts. Sorry to have gotten away from Jake just now. Just wanted to 'sound out loud' my ideas concerning Mike's legal woes. Like real court cases, there's no clear 'Perry Mason win' of a witness admitting in court that they'd done it! Mike won't be absolved of his charge by a clear 'win' either. The important thing is that Mike will be freed from prosecution but he'll bear that stigma of sending a police officer to the hospital for a long time. To the white folks, Mike got off on a technicality. The Blackfoot are glad Mike beat up that bad cop. Eli Kie will not be heard from again (Charms A Bird gets him). Part 13 NtTL will see Jake's introduction. That story part continues where part 12 left off with Winna learning of her sister's death yet survived by a son. Mike's Expedia.com flight search and disappointing news of a Thursday earliest departure for Winna and Jessie. Mike can't fly with them without I.D. and he has court Monday, besides. Tuesday, Winna calls school. Mike attends Discovery meeting along with his attorney to meet with prosecutor Benton. Ron's diary in his hands revealed. Mike's strained talk with Mr. Talbert in car afterwards. Mike takes diary zerox and drives towards Canada in anger where he breaks down, bemoaning his likely sacrifice of freedom by accepting Benton's renewed plea bargain on Monday to save Ron's good name in the tribe for all the good he's done and keep people from learning that that man had sex with Jessie which in turn will prevent it from being used against him in trial where Benton will reveal that Mike is a homosexual not worthy of their support (in so many words) to jury and support of Mike by the Blackfoot People will evaporate. Mike destroys diary zerox (he didn't allow his attorney to read it but told him what Ron wrote about Jes) and after a few hours cry and setting his mind to making that sacrifice of self on Monday, returns home by 3pm. Winna is already home and waiting for Mike's return. She asks him to drive them to Rosebud. 'Sure. Why not? My life is about to be ruined so I'll do this last thing for Jessie's mom.' Their 15 hour trip in rainstorm (mirroring Mike's gloomy mood) to Rosebud, Wednesday morning's six hour sleep in motel. Early afternoon first visit with Jake. Depending on how much room remains in part 13 will determine how much readers will 'see' of Jake. Part 14 will continue with Jake. 5/4/05 Vince wrote: I've searched through the NtL/NtTL series for any mention of Judy to ensure story continuity. It appears that Winna HAD suspected that a Mexican immigrant worker had swept Judy off her feet in her teens and took her back to his country! What follows are the results of my 'Judy' search in story texts: [NtL part 7] "Silly! You don't need to bring her a gift. She already knows how you've helped me, Mike. If anything, that's what's going to convince her that we need to be together. You aren't coming over tonight empty handed. Come with an open heart. Don't talk too much. Let my mom get out all her pain, worry and fear. Assure her that you aren't going to be taking me away from her." "I wouldn't do that!" "I know, Mike. She couldn't take losing another child." I'm taken back by what Jessie has said. "You have a brother or sister? What happened to them?" ** "No. Not a sibling. I'm talking about my mom's kid sister. Judy ran away from the family and we've not heard from her since. My mom took that very hard. She'd been taking care of Judy as if she were her own daughter." "Oh." I'm beginning to understand. Losing someone close and not knowing what's happened to them can be pretty traumatic. No wonder Winna is afraid that she's going to lose Jessie too. [NtL part 15] Jes has done this same thing for me. I notice he's not returned to the truck. Is Running Water begging forgiveness from his nephew for what Ron did with him? Winna shifts in her seat to look past me for her son. I come up with something to say to distract her. "Mother? I've thought about what you asked me this afternoon about the house. I want to pay off your loan on it." Winna grasps my left arm. "We'll talk about this tomorrow." I sense relief in Winna. Now she knows that I'm not planning on stealing ** her son away like what happened to her younger sister when she ran off with that Mexican immigrant worker. Judy hasn't been heard from since. My eyes widen with surprise. I must have gleaned this from Winna because Jes didn't mention anything about a man being the cause of it. [NtL part 16] Jes warns me that his mother's side of the family is larger. I'm not surprised. I Open myself to what my lover will be Showing me about them. ** Winna has a younger sister named Judy. I'm not given her face because Jessie doesn't remember her. He's sad. Not only for himself but that his mom has agonized over what had happened to her kid sister. She'd taken care of Judy after the death of their mother as if she were her own daughter. I Share with Jes what I'd gleaned from Winna. He didn't know anything about that Mexican immigrant worker his mom suspects had swept Judy off her feet in her teens and took her away. They're probably living in Mexico. :You really are Seeing things from people,: Jessie remarks. :Yeah. That doesn't seem right because it's like I'm stealing secrets from them.: [2nd mention in NtL part 16] * :My mother's side of the family is more traditional. You've already learned that my mother has a younger sister named Judy.: I'm nodding, Sharing in his sadness that comes from not getting the chance to know her. :Both of their parents have passed on. My maternal grandmother was sister to grandfather. He has another sister who's still living. My grandmother's name is Wears-fine-moccasins. Her husband... died only last year. They have two sons named One-white-horse and Looks-upon-the-sunrise who've you met.: [NtL part 20] Author's Note: This ends the 'New to Love' story but don't you fret. The next series, 'New to Teaching Love' will pick up where I've left off. Mike and Jessie will try gaining acceptance in their tribe for being a couple. They'll pass on a truth to the People by helping others who share their spirit such as * Jake, a long-lost nephew of Winna's who comes to live in their house. Together, these three young men will learn what it means to be 'new to love'. Luke - I'm glad that I checked on previous mentions about Judy in these series because that information is 'locked in' to build upon when Winna gets over her initial shock Monday night to reveal what she suspects had happened to her sister to M&J during their long drive Tuesday to see Jake. That is a source of guilt for Winna. She'd 'abandoned' her kid sister at age ten. Here is what happened in those sisters' youth: * Winnapah born 1961 (her mother is the shaman's sister) * Judy born 1970 (mother died two years after her birth) When Winna was nearly nine, Judy was born but it had been a difficult child birth for her mom. She never recovered from it and died a few years later. During those two years, Winna helped her frail mom take care of 'baby' Judy with bottle feeding, changing diapers, etc. so she took over as 'mom' for Judy upon their mother's death. Their father worked long hours in a factory and often came home drunk. He also went out carousing so other family members looked in on his daughters, bringing them food, clothes and to visit with them. They feared the man's violent temper and left his house when he did come home. When Judy was nearly nine, her sister Winna married at age eighteen that allowed her to escape their father's house. She often visited with Judy during the next year until Jessie was born. Taking care of a baby made it impossible for Winna to also 'take care' of her kid sister after that. Poor little Judy lost her 'mom' again though family members still looked in on her but it wasn't the same thing. She missed Winna. The next six years made Judy strong and independent since her father was nearly always away from home to work in the factory or out drinking and carousing. At sixteen, Judy was swept off her feet by a Mexican immigrant who was working the fields near her home in Shelby. She couldn't wait until age eighteen to escape home like Winna had done with marriage so Judy ran off with Miguel back to Mexico where Jake was born nine months later. Winna suspected that this had happened. Shortly before Judy ran away from home, the sisters had a talk about love. Winna admitted that though her husband Looks-from-mountain was a good man she was growing to love and the father to their autistic son Jes-ee-ah, she had married to get away from their alcoholic father! Judy in turn revealed that she was already in love with Miguel who worked the fields nearby. When Judy ran away, Winna knew what had happened. She blamed herself for not looking after her kid sister as she should of in spite of having to care of little Jes-ee-ah at age 7 and the fact that her husband didn't get along with their father (no one in the family liked that drunkard of a man!). Winna filed an FBI missing persons report and she did list the possible reason being that Judy had gone off with Miguel. Winna didn't tell anyone of her suspicions due to guilt and her fear of how her father would violently react. Only two months later, Winna's father died crashing his pickup truck while drunk. What do you think about this sad 'family history' for Winna and Judy? Parts of it will be revealed to M&J (if not all) during that long drive to Rosebud. On Monday night, Winna is in shock from learning about her sister's death to tell M&J about Judy then. Tuesday morning, Mike goes into shock himself when learning how prosecution is going to use Ron's diary against him and he drives towards Canada after the Discovery meeting to agonize over accepting that plea bargain by next Monday in sacrifice of self for Ron and Jessie. When Mike does return home later that afternoon in a gloomy mood, Winna's asks that he drive them down to Rosebud is like an escape for him from his woes. He'll do this last good thing for Jessie and his mom before surrendering himself to his fate on Monday (prosecution's plea bargain offer expires before court). I'll complete at least half of part 13 before sending it to you for review. (It's at 26k right now towards the 110k.) My flurry of letters last week along with your having to edit part 12 before posting is surely eating up your free time, eh? I understand. Luckily, there's no deadlines for me to meet so our readers will just have to wait for story parts to get posted. I'm pretty prolific in getting stories posted when compared to other writers on the Nifty Archive. They post little 20k parts while mine are pushing 110k. I like giving readers a big slice of story to enjoy at a time, sometimes they even get dessert twice in a month's time when I'm fast! Anyway, this 'Judy' letter was intended to assure continuity from previous story parts mentioning Winna's sister. Let me know if my 'sad family history' for those two sisters makes sense. Do you have any changes to suggest or details to add? 5/5/05 Vince wrote: I am perhaps thinking 'out loud' too much with you about intended future incidents and plots. My racing fingers usually veer away from something I've planned to happen in story plot especially if it's an event in the far future (several story parts away) as more immediate things happen that changes what I'd thought how the future would unfold. However, I do intend that Mike drives home alone in his pickup truck them fifteen hours starting Sunday where he'll barely make it back to Havre for his court date Monday morning. It's an important story plot that he's alone. Jes will be able to Think to Mike when he talks with Jake during their trip home with Winna. I know you'd like to have these three guys together to talk without Winna there but that trip home cannot be where it'll happen. I'm going to check into having Winna, Jake and Jes getting back by Amtrack train... I've just gone online. Amtrak (no letter 'c' in its name) does have a stop in Havre, MT but the closest boarding station for Winna, Jake and Jessie is in Fargo, North Dakota which is 300 miles away from Rosebud, SD as the 'crow' flies so driving there will be farther away. MUCH farther away as I'm looking at the map since there's no north NE road at a 45 degree angle to directly connect Rosebud to Fargo. All roads run N/S or E/W. Rt. 90 east from Rosebud to Sioux Falls is 200 miles, turning north on Rt. 29 to Fargo takes another 230 miles for a total of 430 miles to that Amtrak station. At 60mph average, this trip by car is over seven hours! Someone else would have to drive them there as it's not safe for Jake to ride in back of Mike's truck for those many hours. On shorter trips (sightseeing, for example) Winna could drive Mike's truck, Jake sits in the middle and Jes sits on Mike's lap. Won't that be sensual and REVEALING to Jake, huh? Looks like Jake will hang out in back of Mike's pickup on these short town trips instead. No 'lap dances' for Mike. Amtrak displays all U.S. station stops. It runs north along Fargo then turns west in northern ND to reach Havre, MT. There's no other 'intersecting' station for Winna, J&J that Mike could have brought them to on his own way back home in his pickup. An adult fare is only $99 (in today's dollars). The trip from Fargo to Havre is just under twelve hours with only one train stop in Fargo per day at 3:49am though I can 'fudge' that start time. A Greyhound bus back to Havre would take too long because of its numerous stops so a trip back home would require Winna, J&J to leave Saturday morning! That's not the way to go. Hmm. I'm now checking for a 'shuttle' plane between Pierre, SD (fifty miles from Rosebud to drive there) and Fargo, ND. According to Expedia.com, it's a six hour flight with a stop over in Minneapolis, MN costing $1,100 round trip. No good. I've now found the 'one way' flight option to click and am changing the destination to Minneapolis, MN. A Northwest flight takes 2 1/2 hours direct costing $429 one way. There's an Amtrak station in St. Paul, MN which is a 'sister' city just east of Minneapolis. This plan is workable. Jake can use his Internet connection at school with Mike assisting (not that Jake needs help) where they find the best travel plans. An air flight from Pierre, SD to Great Falls, MT which still puts Winna's party a ninety miles drive (rent a car?) from Havre costing $559 per adult one way taking under eight hours with a stop over in Minneapolis, MN. A flight from Pierre, SD to Havre's tiny airport costs $694 and takes over 24 hours! These two options are no good. Sunday morning after Jake says final goodbyes at school, Mike drives Winna, J&J fifty miles north from Rosebud to the airport in Pierre, SD. The three fly 2.5 hours on Northwest costing 2003's dollars: $389 per adult one way to Minneapolis, MN and taxi over a few miles to St. Paul, MN to catch an Amtrak train costing $89 per adult to Havre taking 12 hours to reach Havre. They would get maybe six hours of sleep at the house before attending Mike's Monday morning court session. Winna has promised Jessie that they'll attend all of Mike's court appearances. In hindsight, Mike will wonder why he didn't open his travel options to include Amtrak when going to Rosebud. But again, it's important that the three leave Havre in Mike's truck since Winna only 'plans' on visiting with a distraught Jake and later, that changes to actually bringing the boy home with her. Perhaps Jessie will ride home with Mike after picking up on his gloomy mood about court on Monday. That will leave Jake alone with Winna which I'm of mixed minds about doing it. Mike learns from Discovery meeting previous Tuesday not only that will Mr. Benton use Ron's diary 'against him' which actually is to blacken Ron Earlman's name in the eyes of the Blackfoot as well as make it known that Jes is gay too and therefore, Mike is gay being with Jessie which could evaporate their tribe's support for Mike during these court proceedings let alone their future as a couple in their eyes as well as prejudice a homophobia jury at his trial, BUT Mike also learns that a judge had issued phone tap order on Winna's home phone after Lt. Scott Danielson was murdered in his hospital bed (Mike or his 'Indian' friends were suspects) and Mr. Benton learns of Mike's possible sexual involvement with Simon! Goes-late-in-the-night said as much in Siksika in part 13 that I'm writing now. These two things will prompt Mike to consider accepting prosecution's new plea bargain (less years in jail for Mike but this offer expires right before court on the following Monday). Anyway, I'm thinking out loud again too much and plans could change. Yet I intend this final devastating gloom for Mike where he escapes it for a while by driving Winna and Jessie down to see Jake. He's keeping his plan to accept plea bargain from Jessie all during the visit but on the way home, Jes finally KNOWS and either insists on riding back with Mike to convince him otherwise or through constant 'Don't do this, love!' thoughts between M&J when separated during their trips back home. Mike arriving a bit late to court Monday will prevent him from accepting that plea bargain and other events during his absence from Havre will finally release Mike from his legal woes. As I go through your corrections list, I'm struck again by how many errors got through on part 12 even after my final editing from that version sent you. I really appreciate the time you took on your day off to do so. Killing errors is good but it is your comments and suggestions that really improve my stories. I give you a heart-felt thank you for doing this! Oh. I need Jake's birth date. I'd asked you that in a previous letter with them _______ underlines. Judy's birth date isn't that important though we do have her birth year. Please note that Jake is 16 by NtTL's time of early May 2003 and his birth year is 1987. He is your character so you do this honor. 6/29/05 A member (Tryme) to my Yahoo! Group wrote: vince, I finally managed to read through those jake outline files you posted [on your Group]. That was quite a bit of stuff to go through. Would it be possible to get a first-person encounter with Jake, perhaps through a dream of mike's or something? If this happens it should wait a while and not be rushed though, as I think his character would play better if we share some of his troubles without a "break" thrown in at first. I think it would take a little while for Jake to recover from his sudden change in direction. Just don't let him get too depressing or it may turn readers off. He seems like a pretty adaptable person. Jake gives us the chance to see some more conflict in coming to understand what "M & J" came to know. Mike has been learning quickly until very recently because of this bond and merging with his former self(almost cheating). I noticed that you re-uploaded the files on the 27th (after I read some of them). Did anything important change when that happened? I am eagerly looking forward to reading the rest of part 14 and what lies beyond... 7/6/5 Luke wrote: You said that you've finished part 14 and that Jake is ready to appear on the scene. I can't wait to read about him and see how you're going to introduce him as well as how you will have him interacting with Mike and Jessie. Having given you so much background on Jake and on the Rosebud Indian School, I feel like it's now back in your hands in terms of what happens next. 7/6/05 Vince wrote: By now, you've read part 14 NtTL. Sorry. Most of that story is about M&J and Winna getting down to Rosebud. FINALLY, we get to meet Jake. Does it meet with your approval? Again, my fingers just came up with the boy flying out of the Headmaster's office when he learned only then that his mother's sister came to see him. It was quite a shock. And he was angry too for not getting a visit from family in all them years he'd been abandoned at the school. I've taken a lot of descriptions and stuff from your outline to write about Jake. How do you like my explanation about Jake's green eyes when Power flows from him? You'd said that his soft brown eyes looked green sometimes when he's in a certain mood. Only those of Power like M&J see them glowing while others only see a green tint. Part 15 will have more interaction with Jake. He'll return to being more reserved and closed mouth (especially about his mother) with M&J and Winna. Since meeting them Wednesday, the boy has had a lot to think about that night in his room. He's intrigued like you said about M&J being a gay couple. At first, Jake thought Mike was taking advantage of his cousin's autism and it showed in his hostility directed at Mike. Now that M&J are Connected again, Jes won't seem so innocent and shy as when Jake first saw him and he'll wonder at the change. So will the Headmaster. He knows what autism is and wonder about the change in Jessie after they came back from the fountain. Did you like that scene where Mike returned to being Short Hair? He's gonna fight Mr. Benton come Monday instead of surrendering to his fate (not that I planned him to anyway). A member from my Yahoo! Group posted a message after reading the 'Jake outline'... [REFER TO MEMBER (Tryme) MESSAGE POSTING DATED 6/29/05] I need a birthdate for Jake. He's turned sixteen in the months before his Headmaster wrote that April 30, 2003 letter to the Blackfoot inquiring about his aunt Winnapha. This is your honor since Jake is your character! I hope that what little you've seen of Jake in part 14 has met with your approval. Did you notice Charlie's brief introduction? Again, I used your suggestion about Jake's friend serving kitchen duty. The Headmaster and Winna have had a private talk while M&J and Jake were out in the garden. The woman has asked to take her nephew home. The Headmaster will consider it but not reveal anything to Jake now until he's had more time to be with family. Thursday will see the boy giving M&J and Winna a tour of his school and checking out some of the Rosebud Res. sites. He's been releases from classes for the rest of the week. Not that Jake had been very attentive in school due to him grieving over his mother's death. Winna knows not to press Jake about her sister for now. Jake will be closed mouth about that for a while as we've agreed. He'll at times be crying, other times putting on the 'charm' that prostituting has taught him so the boy will seem like two different people to M&J and Winna. Though part 14 ended on a happy note with the three guys, Jake will become more reserved in front of them. He fears his past becoming known to M&J. Yet the boy is intrigued by the couple and had a glimpse of their deep love for each other when Gleaning them at the fountain. He'll recognize a similar deep feeling in himself for Dr. Karl. Is 'Karl' the man's first name or last name? What is his FULL name? We'll be meeting Dr. Karl in the next few story parts when Winna works on getting guardianship of Jake and is in need of the boy's medical records. DO let me know what you think about part 14 and have you any suggestions about part 15 where Jake gives a tour of his school, and what could happen on their outing in the Rosebud Res. with talks with Winna, and then a hike the three guys make where they enjoy a skinny dip in a river. No sex between them! But Mike gets a good look at the boy and maybe Jake gets a Look at them making love on the bank. What do you think? 7/10/05 Vince wrote: 'New to Teaching Love' will end at twenty story parts. That's the number where I ended the 'New to Love' series. I'm planning to call the third series: 'New to Love Shaman' where Jessie completes his training by grandfather. If all goes well, NtTL would have covered these events: Jake being brought back to live in Winna's house, resolvement to Mike's legal woes, M&J's 'wedding' Saturday (May 24th) and other loose ends tied up the week thereafter. The NtLS series will see a separation between Mike and Jes for days and weeks at a time. Jessie completes his training as shaman with grandfather while Mike gets busy with opening up a computer training school for Blackfoot Natives. He'll be provided with a room somewhere in Chinook (maybe in the community center) to teach classes. Mike finances the computer and software purchases himself. His classes during the week will be free of charge to his students. Mostly young woman attend his first offerings in computer literacy and MS-Word. That's all in the distance future! For now, I'm writting part 15 where we get to see more of Jake. I expect three parts (15-17) to get Jake back to Havre. Part 18 for Mike's Monday court, grandfather meeting Jake after a late lunch at Winna's house (brief account already written called 'Singing' posted on my Yahoo! Group - not really about Jake but an important 'intro' or rather, information that'll enhance readers' enjoyment and understanding of the 'Honeymoon' series). The remaining two NtTL parts (19-20) will cover M&J's wedding and to tie up loose ends. The 'Honeymoon' series will, I hope, prove very exciting to both readers and myself. I've always planned on having a substory from the main NtTL series to write M&J's honeymoon. Now, my plans are much expanded. By the time Jake is brought back to Havre, I hope to have the H series written that'll carry story time during Tuesday - Friday with NtTL then continuing on with their wedding and tying up loose ends. Then 'New to Love Shaman' begins! Much has already been 'written' in my head. My flying fingers have yet to catch up to document this saga for all to read and enjoy. I will come to depend on your support, both in editing and your much valued input from comments and suggestions on both these series, Luke! 7/13/05 Luke wrote: First off, I LOVE NtTL, part 14. I was THRILLED to read about Jake's first appearance in the story. It was wonderful. Actually, it brought tears to my eyes. It's almost like he was "born" in that moment when I was reading about his arrival in the headmaster's anteroom and first being seen by Mike and Jessie. I was surprised by the "gleaning" that Jake was doing and of his eyes changing from brown to green as he was doing this but this change was only seen by somebody who also had the power. That is just one of the many things, I'm sure, that are going to come out of your writer's imagination regarding Jake that will surprise me. I'm actually looking forward to it because I feel like after the massive exchange of information as Jake's character was developing and his story being fleshed out, he's now a character in your story and yours to "direct" if you will. So please send me part 15 as you have it ready. I'm especially interested in reading how things go! Now a few comments on the three-some's arrival at the Rosebud School. It is really a great description of what they would see and experience as they arrived. To actually see it in your story, as I said, made me cry. When they see Brother Mathews, they would probably mistake him for a priest because Jesuit priests and brothers dress identical to each other. I like how Jessie comforts and calms Jake. That was wonderful. He really stepped up to the plate on that even though he was still autistic. I notice in the description of the Rosebud Indian Mission School that the Xaverian Brothers of Penance were acknowledged. Nice. It was a surprise and fun to see the Xaverian Brothers name mentioned. Was Winna told that Judy was murdered? Will Jake ever be told? Obviously now that Mike and Jessie are again Connected, Jessie will know by reading Mike's mind, right? Tough Jake certainly let his feelings out when he was sobbing in Winna's arms. That was very good to see for both their sakes and was a moment of powerful bonding, I think. The fact that Jake can allow himself to be so vulnerable is very good in terms of his own mental health. I was also struck by Mike's physical description of Jake. We had talked about him being quite muscular from weight lifting for reasons we've discussed. But I had not thought about his height relative to Mike. When Mike says he was surprised that Jake was taller than him, that surprised me. Not that it's incorrect. I just wasn't expecting it. In my own mind Jake took on a taller look than I had been thinking about him in my own mind. The fact that Mike and Jessie reveal themselves to Jake including mind speaking with him is very nice. It shows trust in Jake and Jake must sense this. And Jake's concern about whether Mike and Jessie can read his mind is parallel to what people often fear about psychotherapists. I've had it happen at parties when somebody asks me what I do for a living and I tell them that I'm a psychologist. They immediately look at me differently and wonder, I think, whether I can see what they're thinking and know their fears and flaws. Also the letter from your reader (Tryme) is interesting, isn't it? I am also frustrated by the story always being through Mike's experience. Some kind of a first person encounter with Jake would be nice although I don't see how it would occur in the context of NtTL. It could only occur if Jake told it to Mike or Jessie and/or either of them read his mind and then told what they had read. That would appear as first person from Jake. I think that going skinny dipping for the three guys is a great idea. Jake can check out their cocks, balls, and asses, as well as them checking out his. I don't know about him seeing Mike and Jessie having sex. That seems kinda rude to me - that they would have sex and exclude him yet allow him to watch them. Maybe they can all three get hard. Maybe they can beat off together or something. Maybe they can beat each other off. It would not be shocking for any of the three of them! Also I don't know how you're going to handle Jake's own feelings about having sex. I don't know whether he sees it as something he does to get his rocks off and for money. Or if he sees it as a way of being close and loving - like he probably does with Dr. Karl although he might not be consciously aware of it himself yet. I was just having a very erotic picture of Jake or maybe Mike or Jessie bending over to pick something off the ground and showing his ass hole winking at the others! And about Dr. Karl, his first name is Karl. I've always assumed that he has a German last name but I haven't thought about one really. So feel free to give him whatever last name you want. Maybe Dr. Karl Hoffmann or Dr. Karl Klein (means "small" I think). And about Jake's birthdate, if he turned 16 just before the Headmaster wrote his letter on April 30th, 2003, he would have been born in 1987. How about March 12, 1987 for Jake's birth date? About Jake's touring Mike, Jessie, and Winna around the school, he would probably show them the dormitory building including his bedroom. Maybe he would have athletic male Indian posters on his wall as a way of honoring his Indian heritage. Mike and Jessie would recognize them as muscularly erotic. Would he have a picture of Judy there? Maybe a copy of the picture that the school sent along with the letter to the Blackfoot nation? I imagine that his room would be very neat-bed made, desk neat, nothing scattered on the floor. A school like that would probably have had "inspections" of the rooms with merits and demerits based on the condition of the rooms. The merits and demerits would be connected with more or less work around the school, more or less TV, and so forth. Jake would also take them through the chapel which would give somebody the chance to ask Jake how "Catholic" he is. My own sense is that Jake is more "spiritual" than he is "religious" and, therefore, although he has attended Mass regularly all the while he is at the school, he still has questions and doubts about Catholicism. He had undoubtedly received the Sacraments of the church: Baptism, Confession, First Communion, Confirmation. His intellectual knowledge of Catholicism as well as other religions would be extensive thanks to the Jesuits who have taught him over the years. He would also take them through the library which includes the extensive computer lab. As I described before, the school would have been the recipient of lots of donated computer equipment from companies that were upgrading. They probably have DSL and the kids all have e-mail accounts. You know much more about what they might have and how Jake would explain it to them. This is one of those times when he and Mike would really connect since both know a lot about computers. Winna could tell Jake that Mike is teaching her MS Word. Jake might say that he has also taught that to younger kids at the school. So go for it! Moving back to Winna's would definitely be a step-down for Jake in terms of available computer equipment unless somehow the Headmaster has too much donated stuff and offers to send back some of it with Mike in his truck. Maybe Mike could tell Fr. McMillan about his plan to open up a computer school for Native Americans back in Havre and to do it primarily without charging tuition. Maybe Fr. McMillan would offer Mike a truck full of computer equipment that the school really cannot use because they get so much of it. Certainly the spirit of the donation would remain intact, as Fr. McMillan thinks about it, because it would still be going to a good cause for Native Americans and not to make a lot of money for somebody (Mike in this case). Also Mike could keep some of the equipment "on loan" from his school at home for the four of them to use at home. Maybe Mike could set up a kind of Network among several computers and computers at home. Maybe Mike could link the computers at home with those at his school so he could access the resources at his school from home when he needed to. Maybe eventually Jake could help Mike teach at the school and that would bring him closer to Mike as well as to his tribe. Maybe Mike's school could also house a website for the Blackfoot Nation and generally bring the tribe into the computer age. All that equipment from the Rosebud School might make that possible along with Mike's skills at repairing what needs repairing and setting things up. I like the fact that Winna will be occupied with the Headmaster and the Social Worker around arranging to take Jake home with them. Of course, you are obviously going to write about her asking Jake if he wants to come home to live with her, right? But Winna being tied up would give the three guys the chance to have some private time with Jake. Jake must be bursting with questions about the relationship and Connection between Mike and Jessie. Since they've started telling him about this, I imagine that this would just continue. Jake will probably also have lots of questions about their relationship maybe even including their sexual relationship. You know - do they both do "everything" to each other or are they into roles where Mike only fucks Jessie but doesn't get fucked himself, for instance? Stuff like that. Maybe they could ask Jake if he has any experience with male sex and Jake responds that he does but leaves the impression that it has only been with other boys at the school. But Mike and Jessie can sense that there's much more to all this. Of course, one of the places that Jake might take the two guys is to a private place beside a stream or lake where they could skinny dip. Maybe Jake would like to see them naked. Remember - Jake is proud of his body including his cock and balls. I've always thought of them as looking very nice and also larger than usual. From his Mexican heritage, he would probably have more body hair than Jessie does. He has probably gotten feedback both from other boys at school and from his tricks how "hung" he is. So he would not be embarrassed at showing himself off to them. I don't really know how "hung" Mike and Jessie are. I don't think you've ever written about that in your stories. I don't know if Jake would get a hard on but it would certainly be interesting if he did. As I said before, maybe they would all get hard ons and talk about this while looking at (feeling?) each other's. But as I said before, I think it would be rude and excluding for Mike and Jessie to have sex there in Jake's sight. He would certainly not be shocked at the sexual behavior; he's had his share through his prostituting, whatever he's done with Dr. Karl, and with boys at school. Maybe Mike and Jessie could send him a mind burst to let him know of Jessie's rape in the truck stop rest room. Maybe Jake could tell them about being raped by older boys at school when he was smaller and younger. Of course, Christopher and Owopspec might have some things to say about this too! Eventually Jake might "discover" Mike and Jessie having sex and watch them without him thinking they know he's there - once they get back to Havre and have settled in. Did you decide who will go into town and talk with Dr. Karl? Will the three boys go in or will Mike go in by himself? I do think that such a meeting is very important. Maybe if all three go in, Jake will, after trying to maintain control, allow himself to be hugged by Dr. Karl, tell him about the news he's discovered about his mother, and maybe cry with him. It is in this that Mike and Jessie will see quite clearly the depth of the love between them although they will also sense that Jake is not conscious of any but a small part of what he really feels for Dr. Karl. And then, of course, Mike and Jessie tell Dr. Karl that he is very welcome to come to Havre to visit Jake and to visit them. If Jake knows by this time that he is going back to Havre to live, he will need to say good-bye to Dr. Karl. Maybe they will assure each other that they will stay in e-mail contact. And maybe they will agree to talk regularly through the "magic" of free-long-distance cell phones. This will be probably the most emotional of the good-byes that Jake will have to go through. 7/13/05 Vince wrote: I was very anxious about hearing what you thought about part 14 where Jake is introduced. We'd spent so much effort working on his outline! I needed to know if your character's introduction met with your approval. I was especially worried about Jake's breakdown outside the admin. building that maybe didn't fit in with your idea of the 'cool' teen he was. Not being in touch with you for over a month didn't allow part 14 to pass your screwtiny and approval prior to posting. Now that you're 'back', I'll send you half finished story parts where I can get your feedback and corrections concerning Jake. I'm much relieved and now motivated by you to start part 15. No. Not a word has been put to keyboard until you responded. I've been busy with finishing part 1 'Honeymoon' and have 20k written towards part 2. You and I had agreed that Jake has Power. Instead of it being like Jessie's ability to See into people (which requires touch) you mentioned the boy's inate ability to pick up on what people around him were all about. That's Gleaning. Mike can know what a person has done but not what they're currently thinking as Jes can. That's how Jake can figure people out; their motives and how best to 'put on the charm' such as with his clients. His brown eyes turning green was your idea based on his 'mood'. I extended your premise with a glow Seen by others of Power when Jake is Gleaning. Mike's ability is stronger in that he can direct what to Look for in a person's past; for example, Knowing that Winna's home finance company guy had collaborated with her husband (through a bottom feeder attorney) to take half the money out of their home without Winna's actual signature. When Jake Gleans, it's more a general impression about the person (Knowing their heart). Through M&J's Connection, they're able to 'connect' with Jake via his Gleaning ability which I'll demonstrate again in future scenes. I'd originally planned NOT to have M&J reConnect until that Sunday when everyone is going home to Havre. That way, Mike wouldn't reveal his plan about surrendering to Mr. Benton's plea bargain to Jes until that last day where he expected opposition from his lover. 'Don't do it, Mike!' Then my flying fingers came up with that magical fountain scene. It was originally meant simply to get the three boys away so Winna could talk privately with Fr. McMillan. It really came together nicely. That statue of Christ where an optical illusion of water flowing down from his hands catching the falling sun the right way to 'glitter'. I'd hinted early that it would be through Mike's Christian religion (instead of an Indian ritual) where he would find himself as Short Hair. During the drive down, Mike and Jes talked about how their Connection was lost and Jes pointed to that wooden cross hanging down from Mike's rearview mirror with Mike saying, "We are all saved in Christ". It all fit! The result of that scene, though, was that Jake now knows about M&J both as lovers (which he'd already figured out but still doesn't quite understand) as well as their special bond. Now, that's out of the way though it not being known so quickly to Jake could have made for an interesting story plot. Oh, well. Jake was understandably shocked to find his aunt sitting in the Father's office. He wasn't told she was coming! Fr. McMillan has had bad experiences of contacting next-of-kin to his Native pupils/students (how would he refer to them?) with the promise of seeing/taking the kid back home with them and it not happening. That's what secretary Rosemary said in so many words to M&J waiting outside the office. Jake is shocked and then angered by Winna's surprise visit. He runs out and it does make for a nice 'meet' between the cousins. Winna, too. Yet Jake will bounce back and return to being in control of himself as any teen would to be 'cool'. This barrier was briefly breeched then and out in the garden. M&J will have to get past it again in the days ahead to Reach the boy who has a lot to think about. Yes. Winna was told about her sister's murder. Jake had already been told (by the Cold Case investigators following up on their lead that took them to the Rosebud School - refer to our outline). Mike now knows. He'll inform Jes soon. Br. Mathews is not yet a priest? I depicted him as being 'lower' in function at the school when he serves as hall monitor in the admin. building. I got lucky there, huh? Is a Brother in training to become a priest? I wanted that first 'meet' between Jessie and Jake to be special. They're cousins. Jes Looked into Jake and wanted to help him which he did after he ran out of the office in tears. That pamphlet information describing the school had come from an Internet website of a similar Jesuit school in the Rosebud res. It mentioned the Xaverian Brothers. When Jake sees the three again on Thursday, he'll return to his cool and collect demeanor. They'll see that the boy has two sides to his personality. It'll take more trust and getting to know each other before M&J can break through that barrier again. You've given me Jake's height from the outline and he is taller than Mike. I've noted Jake's birthdate on the family tree for future reference. Thanks. Yes. That is an interesting member note (Tryme) about wanting to read about Jake 'in the first person'. So you see, your character has generated some interest already. I'll keep his wishes (and yours!) in mind when writing future story parts. You're right about it being rude for M&J to make love in front of Jake. I think it's better that the three enjoy naked peeks of each other when skinny dipping, getting erections and check each other out. Later, when M&J are in their own bedroom making LOUD love, Jake is outside their door listening out of curiosity. Maybe later, invited in to watch. That skinny dipping scene will be better served to show Jake how M&J love each other beyond the sex stuff. The couple will smile lovingly at each other, hug, some tender brief kisses and Jake will realize that 'Hey, them guys are like any straight couple when it comes to expressing their love for each other.' Jake will see his prostitution as only being sex for money/wanting a father figure and then slowly come to terms that he has special feelings for Dr. Karl Hoffmann that's just like what M&J have for each other. Jake's last meet with Dr. Karl had done badly. When learning of his mother's murder and running to the man for comfort, which was rendered, Jake revealed that he was still prostituting himself when the man thought he'd already stopped. This is an added story plot for why Jake wants to return to Havre with Winna. Yet when Jake sees Dr. Karl again (I don't know where this will take place, his office, at school? or with whom - Mike and/or Jes) but only AFTER Jake has agreed to leave Rosebud do the two 'make up' and set up an agonizing scene between them of a realized love and separation. Yes. Jake will email/call Dr. Karl and eventually, the man will clean up his own life for being gay by divorcing his wife and go to Havre to be with Jake in a much future NtLS story part where Jake 'leaves' the series. Good idea about them muscular Indian posters in Jake's room. Hmm. Wouldn't there be one of Arnold too since it seems that Jake likes white guys - Dr. Karl? Perhaps certain muscle pics are hidden for Jake's private enjoyment. Seeing Arnold Swarz. on the wall would be too revealing to others, huh? M&J already know the boy is gay. Yes. Jake has that photo of his mother standing beside her sister Winna in his room. Thanks for giving me an idea of how his room looks like all neat and all. He shares it with another boy, right? Maybe three other boys in two bunkbeds from the outline. This cramping of 80 boys into two buildings explains why the school's pamphlet is asking for donations to build yet another dorm and classroom building. Maybe because of Jake's age, he only shares his room with one other boy. I think that would work out better than having four in his room. Great idea on your part about Mike driving home with his truck bed filled with surplus donated computers from the Rosebud School so he can be spared that expense in setting up his class in Chinook. It also helps me with a story plot as to WHY I wanted Mike to drive home alone where he barely makes his Monday court appearance. I'll keep that plot to myself for now. Jake's interest and expertise in computers will help bond Mike to him from a common love of computers. Mike is more software orientated so Jake could do the actual hardware setup for him in Chinook. Winna will be busy on Friday during the legal arrangements with the school's social worker. That gives M&J and Jake the opportunity for some alone time (skinny dip scene). It'll be up to my flying fingers as to what transpires during that week visit with Jake. Part 15 will be much more revealing. NOW is the time to suggest things about the four being together on Thursday and M&J alone with Jake on Friday. They'll not leave the Rosebud res. but it offers a town to get food (picnic lunch) and beautiful scenic sites. 7/13/05 A member (Tryme) from my Yahoo! Group wrote: Vince, In NTTL part 14, near the end referring to Jake you wrote "A brother to us who shares our spirit though he knows it not." and just after that "The boy hasn't found himself but we will help him." Later in Honeymoon 1 you wrote "We've helped Simon with being gay and when Jake is ready to accept that about himself..." What exactly do you mean when you write this? Surely Simon knows he's gay unless you've decided to remove or heavily alter Jake's past with Dr. Karl from what was in the outline. Do you mean to say that Jake is also "two-spirited"? 7/14/05 Vince wrote in reply to that member's question: First of all, I want to thank you for your questions. They are just as important to me as praise, comments or suggestions. A question means that I've not written as clearly as I should, most likely. Jake was described by Mike and Jessie in part 14 NtTL as "A brother to us who shares our spirit though he knows it not." along with "The boy hasn't found himself but we will help him." What I mean by both statements is that Mike and Jessie know that Jake is gay (A brother who shares our spirit...) but the boy hasn't really consciously accepted that he is gay (though he knows it not/The boy hasn't found himself but we will help him). Sure. Jake has sexually romped around with other boys at his school, prostituted himself to men for money though his real unconscious need is to find a loving father type, which Dr. Karl was providing for Jake. At sixteen, Jake isn't sure about this 'sex and love' thing but only sees SEX which is a separate part of who he is. It's a basic denial of really being gay. I think you've gotten a little confused between Simon and Jake. Hopefully, that's not MY error by using the wrong name! I'll check that later in part 14. Simon is that boy Mike helped foundate his grandfather's trailer tipping over in the mud. This boy (nearly 15) KNOWS he's gay but confuses the sex he's had as also being love. Jake on the other hand, has sex with men but there's no emotional connection to him though Dr. Karl has given him second thoughts (though barely conscious that maybe they have a 'thing' for each other). M&J will help Jake come to accept his spirit they share with him (being gay) and demonstrate that the love of heart can be expressed through pleasurable sex with that person. For now, Jake is a mixed up teen. He's in good hands now with Mike & Jes. I'm sure it wasn't Jake who M&J said was also 'two spirited'. That more likely describes Simon. Refer to that paragraph or two where they talk about both boys - Jake, and Simon. Perhaps my wording set the confusion there. Let's both check. Again, thanks for posting a message! 7/14/05 A member (Tryme) of my Yahoo! Group wrote: Your wording in the stories is quite clear, what threw me off was an assumption (or was it written somewhere) that I made when going through Jake's outline files. I was assuming that Jake's relationship with Dr. Karl was a little deeper than just sex and that Jake knew he was gay because of this deep relationship. This is why your descriptions in the story didn't make sense to me - because they contradicted some notions I got when reading those emails. I will look through those files again and try to find what gave me this impression, but it will take a while to search through them. Most likely it was just written as a strong friendship with some "fooling around" thrown in and I interpreted it differently. 7/15/05 Vince wrote in reply to that member's comment: Dear Reader, Jake's outline serves as the basis for me to write Luke's character into my series. It actually covers the boy's development towards acceptance of being gay and other events that take place AFTER the current story 'time' in NtTL part 14. Maybe that's what confused things. Right now, Jake is in denial. Like many of us, his head and heart, and dick are not in sync. Of all the men Jake has prostituted for, Dr. Karl means the most. He fulfills the boy's unconscious need for a loving father figure. They have great sex. When Jake sees how love and sex are combined by seeing Mike and Jessie's relationship, he will recognize this in himself for Dr. Karl. M&J will talk with the teen to help him understand what his heart already feels for Dr. Karl. The head is often slow to catch up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of file: JAKEOUT3.TXT My correspondence with Luke continues Folder: A-STORY-OUTLINE-FOR-JAKE in JAKEOUT4.TXT
