And for those of you who are reading this for the first time, you need to go back to August, 2010 to read the first installment "Wolf". Previously from "Wolf": "Mason!" "What was that sound I heard?" "Listen to me!...Someone just blew up the gate. They are coming up the road as we speak. The boys are headed your way with the babies. Stay there and protect them. Don't worry about me...I'll hold them off and then lead them away from you..I love you" "I love you too....I'll get the boys to safety with the wolf and then come and help you." About then I saw the van cresting the small hill between the house and the road. I chambered a round in the rifle as I opened the front door. When I could see the van through the scope, I looked for the driver but there was a glare on the windshield so I sighted in the passenger. The van was headed straight toward the house so it was easy to put the cross-hairs on the passenger. I squeezed the trigger. BLAM! The recoil from the shot made me have to resight the van. It was pulling off our dirt road into the grass siding just beyond the barn but I was able to see blood all over the windshield and knew I had hit my target. The van came to a stop and the driver and another man jumped out and started firing on the house. I ran back in the front door and locked it. I found a window and saw them coming up the road with a big dog. I grabbed the pistol and stuck it in the waistband of my shorts, extra shells for the rifle and headed out the backdoor. Shots were still ringing out as I made my way across the pasture to the tree line. I turned to see where they were and saw them coming out the backdoor. I got behind a tree and scoped in the dog. I didn't want him leading them to the kids. I fired and just as the dog fell, I noticed a black SUV speeding up the road toward the house. OH SHIT!! Reinforcements! I took off running down the tree line as bullets hit around me. Then a blinding pain went through my body as I was thrown onto the ground. The gunfire continued as I lay there. I could feel a warm moisture on my body. I reached down and then brought my hand up. It was drenched in blood. I had been hit and I could feel myself waning and feeling weaker, then darkness. Chapter 1: Brad and I stood under the canopy, Mark and Matthew stood in front of me, all of us in suits as we listened to the minister deliver the eulogy. It was a dark day for our pack and a miserable day for funerals, rain pouring down around us, our heads bowed as tears ran down our cheeks. All too soon the minister was finished and people paid their respects, dropping flowers onto the coffins as they were lowered in the earth. Various people walked up and offered their condolences. When all was said and done, we opened our umbrellas and made our way to the SUV, buckled the twins in the back and quickly got ourselves into the dry warmth of the car. "Mason, what are we going to do now with this loss to the pack?" I just looked at Brad as tears continued to run down his cheeks "We'll manage, if for no other reason than our kids." "Yeah.....I guess we better get home and check on Cole. I'm not too sure how well that ex-Marine stud could handle two hungry boys waddling around the house." That made me chuckle a little for the first time in days. Cole was a life saver in more ways than one, but Brad was right, I don't think he could really handle two little boys who had just discovered their legs. All of us were quiet on the drive home. By the time we pulled up in front of the house, the rain had tapered off to a drizzle. We got inside where it was warm. Cole was sitting watching TV. "So, did the boys behave for you?" "Yes, everything seems to be fine on the home front. I had them in here earlier scampering around playing tag and chase. Put them back in their play pen about 15 minutes ago." The boys walked up to Cole and each hugged him. "Uncle Cole, are you up to a chess game?" "Sure! I've been waiting for you two to get home and stomp me again. But first, you need to go get out of your suits." "OK!" they said in unison as they headed to their room all excited. "And don't forget to hang them up." "Yes sir." "Well, I'm going to check on my boys" Brad said as he turned and headed to their room. Cole had that infectious smile going as he watched every one leaving the room. "Well, I guess I had better do my thing, too." I headed to the bedroom removing my coat and tie as I walked. I opened the bedroom door and there was wolf, laying on the bed watching over my baby. I walked over to the side of the bed. Cole was right behind me. "He hasn't moved...either of them. That wolf watches over him like nothing I've ever seen. Michael's temperature is almost normal and I checked the catheter. His urine color is back to normal so I can only assume that the poison has been flushed out of his system." "You don't have any idea what they used?" "I have an inkling it was wolfsbane. It is deadly poison anyway, but particularly for werewolves. The one shot through his upper shoulder went clean through. Lot of blood loss. The second one was lower. When I removed that one is when I noticed they had used hollow points and I picked up a strange odor. They evidently used the wolfbane and sealed it inside the bullet. Once it impacted, the bullet expanded, releasing the toxin." "Cole, you don't know how thankful I am...we are, that you were here to save him. He means the world to me." "I know.....I can tell by everybody's concern.....I'll leave you two..ah three, alone." "Thanks." I took the wash cloth and rinsed it in cool water then gently washed the sweat beads from Michael's face and neck. Wolf watched me intently. I stood and finished undressing, then laid down next to my love. I could hear his breathing and feel his body heat as I placed my arm across his chest and dozed off. *********** I woke up in a daze, looking around and finally recognized I was in our bedroom. My eyes moved down. There was wolf, his head raised looking at me, his tongue hanging out of his mouth and his tail wagging. Then I felt and saw Mason sleeping, curled up against me with his arm across my chest. "RRUUFFFFFF!" Mason raised his head and saw my eyes open. "Oh Michael, thank God!..You made it baby." I couldn't speak. My body was sending me crazy signals and my mind was flashing back to some vivid dreams I had. "Hey babe.....some water please" I whispered. Mason handed me the glass of water from the bedside table and I took a few sips. My mouth felt like an army had marched through it. I wet my lips with my tongue. "What happened?.......Oh yeah,....is everybody all right?" as memory bits flashed across my mind. Just then this blond hunk walked in the bedroom. We looked at each other. "And you must be Cole?" Mason and Cole exchanged glances and then looked at me. "How do you know that babe?....You've been totally out for days!" I looked at Mason "Part of my dreams,......waking dreams I guess you would call them. They revealed a lot to me." My eyes teared up "Including Dad's death." Mason just looked at me as his head was shaking in disbelief. "What did they reveal Michael?" "The changes we need to go through right now to protect the pack. ....I am really tired.....We'll talk more later when I feel up to it." "Ok babe, go back to sleep and rest." I was out and dreaming again. When I woke up, it was evidently evening. Mason was sitting on the edge of the bed. "Wake up babe.....I need to get some broth into you and start building your strength up." I smiled and pulled myself up. Mason put pillows behind me for support and then started spoon feeding me. It tasted good...really good. "Mmm...I must really be hungry. I've never been a fan of broth but it tastes fantastic." Mason laughed "Well, that's what all of us said. Cole made it from scratch." "Mmmm...well if the rest of his cooking is anything like this, he is hired as the chef for the pack." Just then there was laughter. Mason and I looked at our doorway to see Cole, Brad, Mark and Matthew. Mark and Matthew were each holding the hands of Shane and Shawn as their little brothers quietly watched Mason and I. "Looks like our patient is well on the road to recovery" Cole said with a beaming smile. "Much better. Thank you Cole." All the guys came in and sat on the bed after I motioned to them. As soon as I finished off the broth, I turned my attention to the guys. "Okay, I need some filling in about what all happened that day." Mason looked at Brad. "Well, Dad had contacted Cole to see if he wanted to join our pack since his had been wiped out by the hunters. Cole had been lucky enough to be running errands and away from their 'den' when they attacked. And it was a good thing since Cole had been compiling all the werewolf history, myths, etc. on a computer. Luckily he had also downloaded it all to a flash drive that he wore around his neck...so we have that. But on the morning your dad and I were to picked up the refined gold, Cole joined us at the motel. We didn't know it at the time, but when Cole was pulling into the motel parking lot, the attackers van passed him on their way out. Dad and I met Cole and then headed over to the processor, picked up the small crate of ingots and then headed home with Cole following us. I guess we were about midway home when Cole started honking at us. Dad looked in the rearview mirror and saw smoke trailing us so he immediately pulled over. We both jumped out of the car and ran back toward Cole, then the three of us retrieved the packing crate of gold and transferred it to Cole's Hummer. When we turned around, the car was being engulfed in flames. Looking back now and what we know, Cole concluded the attackers had messed with Dad's car or maybe even planted some device under it to kill us. Of course Dad was suspicious so we left the car and hurried home. When we pulled into the drive off the highway, we saw the van they were in and saw them attacking the front of the house. Dad was so cool about it as we readied our weapons to engage them. It was just as we passed the barn and their van that we saw you in the tree line firing on them and then you got shot. A jolt went through both Dad and I." At this point in Brad's retelling of that days events, I noticed how everyone's eyes were transfixed on him. Then I realized what was coming and my eyes started tearing up. "The three of us jumped out of the Hummer and moved in behind the attackers. That was when the first police car came speeding up the drive. Dad motioned for them to join us and was pointing toward the enemy. Cole went around the left side of the house and I took the right. Dad waited and a deputy joined him and they went through the house. Dad and the deputy came charging out the backdoor just as Cole and I started firing. The two gunmen has assault rifles and returned fire, spraying the back side of the house with bullets. The two gunmen zeroed in on Dad and the deputy in their crossfire, killing them. Then one of the gunmen fell to fire from Mason shooting from the tree line followed by the other one that Cole and I took out. When we all realized it was over, Mason ran to check on you and Cole and I ran to check on Dad. Dad had been hit 7 times and was probably dead by the time he hit the ground. Same with the deputy who took numerous hits. Then I heard one of the attackers moaning. I walked over and shot him in the head." By now the tears were streaming down my cheeks. Mason was holding me tight to try and comfort me. And the loss did not go unnoticed by the boys either as tears streamed down their little cheeks. "Lucky for us, Cole was not only an ex-Marine but also a medic. He and Mason carried you farther back into the trees. Cole stayed with you while Mason and I took care of the other cops as they arrived. We covered for you, saying you were out of town. Luckily the cops didn't question the ownership of the Hummer and we acted like the killers were after us for the gold. It took a while but they seemed convinced with our story. It was almost dusk when they had finished with the crime scene and removed all the bodies. That's when we turned our attention to you. When we found you and Cole, all the boys and the wolf were there with you. We carried you to the house and Cole retrieved a medical bag from his car and went to work on you, removing the one bullet still inside you. The whole scene was bloody but we all pulled together and Cole got you patched up." I looked at Cole "Thank you." "My pleasure." "So wolf has been in bed with you the entire time, waiting to alert us to any movement on your part. And the funerals for Dad and the officer were together this morning." "So there you have it babe" Mason said, his voice raspy and a bit uncertain. "Now what?" "Now we restrengthen and grow" I said. "Have you started repairs on the gate?" "Yes babe....That was one of my first concerns. It should be finished in a couple more days and it is stronger than the last one." "Good!.....Now to the business at hand. As I said, I had some very unusual dreams that were very vivid that revealed to me our course of action." ***I hope you enjoyed the first chapter of the continuing saga.
