Chapter Six

I sat in my hotel room, I didn't want to go to the venue or see the concert. I didn't want to see anyone. I felt like an idiot, I gave up what I had in my life to come out here with him, but most of all I cried in the dark until my eyes were sore, red, and puffy. The hotel phone rang, my cell rang, and people knocked on the door up until it was time for the concert and began again when the concert was over. I finally got sick of all the phones ringing and decided I had to get out of the hotel room.

I glanced at my watch, it was 9:34 and the bus didn't leave until tomorrow morning at 10am. I had plenty of time to figure out if I was catching a plane tomorrow or catching the bus. I made my way to the bathroom and splashed water on my face and brushed my teeth. I tried to smile but it only made me look moronic.

I went to the door and glanced out the peephole, half afraid that someone would be waiting for me to come out, it was clear. I opened the door and looked to the left, no one was there, then I looked the right and came face to face with Jeff.

"I knew you'd come out when you were ready," he said, smiling softly at me.

That comment pissed me off more then I thought it would. "So now you think you know me? Fuck you!" I said as I walked past him to the elevator.

"Caleb, wait! Hold on!" He said, trying to catch up with me.

"What the fuck for?" I asked, pressing the down button.

"Because I wanted to talk and see if you were ok," he said, placing his hand on my shoulder.

I shrugged off his hand before turning to face him. "You don't give a rat's ass about me. You're his fucking friend. You're just here to see if I am still coming on the tour with you," I said, turning back to the elevator as the doors slid open.

"No, that's not the case," he said, stepping into the elevator with me. "Actually, I'm not exactly sure what happened. Jessica just told us that you were not in a good mood and that you wouldn't be coming to the concert," he said.

I looked at him, trying to see if he was lying, only to see confusion in his eyes. "I caught Jessica and Nick making out in the elevator," I said as we reached the lobby.

"You're shitting me?" He nearly yelled and I noticed a few heads turn in our direction.

"No, I am not," I said walking towards the front door of the hotel.

"I can't believe that fucking jerk did that. I am going to..." his voice trailed off as I looked up at him.

"Don't bother," I said, rolling my eyes at him before walking towards the front door of the hotel.

"Where are you going?" Jeff asked.

"Somewhere!" I yelled over my shoulder.

I walked up and down the streets of downtown San Diego, looking at all the people on the streets. I don't know how long I walked but I eventually I found myself down by the pier, watching the water as the waves rolled towards the shore.

I thought about all of the things that had happened to me since I came back to this, this being Nick and his life. Was I sure I was ready for this? Did I even want this? I looked over the water and smelled the scent of the ocean. I took a deep breath and another smell assaulted my senses.

"How long have you and she been together?" I asked Nick.

"How did you know it was me?" He asked.

"I bought you that aftershave, now answer the question," I said, turning to look at him, he didn't look as distraught as I hoped he would.

"What are you talking about?" He said tugging at his hat.

I looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "Bullshit!" I yelled as I made eye contact with him. "How long?"

"It happened a couple weeks after you left. She moved up here and the label introduced us. They were talking about finding her a hotel until she found a place of her own and I told them that it wasn't necessary as I had extra rooms in the house.  Well, one night we got a lil too hammered and one thing led to another," he said, looking at his hands. "If you hadn't left this never would have happened. I was alone and hurt..." I cut him off.

I got in his face and in a tone that freeze blood I yelled, "Don't you dare! Don't you dare blame me!" I stepped back and ran my fingers through my hair. "I don't belong here Nick. I never did. This is your thing and it's your life. I don't need to be a part of it," I said softly before walking away.

"So what happens now?" He asked.

I turned and looked at him. "It would seem that you already have an answer for that," I said as I turned and headed towards the street. "Tell the guys I said bye," I called over my shoulder.

I hailed a cab and watched as it pulled up to the curb. I climbed inside of the cab and told him where to. As I sat in the back of the cab I heard Madonna on the radio.

"Could you turn that up sir?" I said to the driver.

"Sure thing" he said.

`There's nothing left to try/ There's no more places to hide/There's no greater power than the power of goodbye/There's nothing left to lose/There's no more heart to bruise/There's no greater than the power of goodbye.'

"Who are you telling?" I said under my breath.

I stepped off the elevator and if I had been a 13-year-old girl and not a tired, angry, 21 year old, I would have screamed. Just the sight of 3 of the 4 members of 98 degrees made me want to snap.

"Go away," I snapped, walking past them and into my room.

"We heard about what happened," Drew said.

I pulled my duffel bag out from under the bed. "You mean to tell me that you guys knew nothing about this?" I asked in disbelief, walking over to the dresser and pulling out my clothes.

"Knew about what?" Justin said.

"Nick and Jessica. I put two and two together while I was sitting here. It's had to have been going on for a while now. You expect me to believe that you, the group members, had no idea about it? Somehow I find that hard to believe," I said as I packed my bag.

"But..." Jeff started to say before I cut him off.

"It's ok. I was played so you guys could keep your careers. That's fine." I said in a voice with no emotion as I walked past them and into the bathroom to grab my things.

"Caleb!" Jeff said as he grabbed ahold of my arms and made me look at him. "I can swear to you that the three of us didn't know anything about it."

"Um... that's not true," Drew said.

Jeff turned and looked at him, "What's not true?"

Drew sighed. "I knew about Nick and Jessica!" He blurted out.

"You what?!" Justin and Jeff said.

Jeff walked over Drew until they were face to face. "So you knew that Nick and Jessica were together and you didn't think that it was important enough to tell the rest of us while we were back in Minnesota?" Jeff nearly growled at him.

"Nick swore me to secrecy; besides, I didn't think Caleb would actually come on tour with us," Drew said, making a poor attempt at defending himself.

"Well I came and now I feel like an ass," I said, zipping my bag and slinging it over my shoulder. "Now if you don't mind, I have a flight I need to catch," I said walking past them.

"Wait! Caleb!" Jeff said, chasing me as I walked to the elevator.

"What Jeff?" I asked as I pushed the down button.

"Are you sure you want to do this. I mean, leave like this?" He asked me.

The elevator doors opened and I walked in and looked at him as I pushed the button for the lobby.  "Yes," I said as the doors slid shut.
