Chapter 2

It's cold. I thought to myself. Who's voice is that?

"I'm not really sure. I heard the gunshot from inside the restaurant. I immediately ran outside. I saw 3 hooded men running out of the alley. Rather then chase them, I figured it would be a good idea to check the alley first. That's when I found him...." a man said.

Who is he talking about?

"We are so grateful sir. If you hadn't have found Jeff....well. I don't even want to think about that." a woman's voice cracked.

Mom? Why are they talking about me like that?

"Jeff will wake up soon. We'll give you a call when he does. I'm sure he'll want to thank you." Jennifer was now heard.

Want to thank him for what? What's going on? Then I remembered. The alley. The gun. The painting. The steel. The man. Who was he? I needed to know. I don't know why, but I couldn't stop thinking about him. I tried so hard to open my eyes. I wanted to see him. I wanted to talk to him before he leaves.

"Yes Jennifer, I would very much appreciate that. Good night." the man said.

No. NO! He can't leave yet.

"Good night Kevin." Jeff's mother, sister and father replied in unison.

Kevin. Kevin. Don't leave yet Kevin. I want to talk to you. I felt a hand on mine. I have no idea who's hand it is. I can hear my mother sobbing ever so delicately. I wonder how bad this is.

Everything is dark. I can no longer hear anything. I can't even think anymore.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure how much time passes. I seemed to be coming in and out of consciousness.

I need to wake up. I need to see my family. Let them know I'm ok. I need to see Kevin.

Jennifer must have just walked in, "Hey mom. Any change?"

"None." I heard my mother sigh deeply.

I'M HERE! I'm here. I'm conscious. I'm here mom.

"Ok mom. Why don't you go home and get some sleep. I'll stay here. Dad's waiting outside for you." Jennifer suggested.

"Ok dear. But call me the second anything happens." my mother sniffled.

Don't cry mom. I'm ok.

I heard her leave the room. I could hear Jennifer fiddling with her cell phone. That quickly faded and I lost consciousness again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I came to this time, I heard something unexpected.

"I figured I'd stop in for a visit." Kevin.

He's here. Again. Why?

"There really hasn't been any change. The doctor says it could be another week before he wakes up." Jennifer said.

Kevin was closer to me now, "I'm glad the surgery was successful. I hope you don't mind my dropping by."

"Not at all." Jennifer replied, "But I do have a question."

"Sure." Kevin responded.

There was a brief moment of uncomfortable silence.

"Well. I'm just....a little curious. Why you come to visit every night. I mean...not that we're ungrateful. But a person like you...I'm sure...has more important things to do." Jennifer managed to spit out.

Person like you? What does she mean? Kevin's been here every night? How long have I been like this?

"Well...I'm not really sure. I know it sounds weird but, I need to see him." Kevin's voice cracked ever so slightly. I could hear the sadness in his voice.

He needs to see me?

"I see." Jen said.

"I hope I didn't make you feel uncomfortable. I didn't mean to creep you out. It's not like that." Kevin stated.

Jennifer chuckled a bit, "I know. I understand. Sorta. Or at least I think I do. Either way...stay as long as you like. You can visit anytime as well. I was just curious that's all."

He needs to see me?

"I'm just going to go grab some coffee. Would you like some?" Jen asked Kevin. They appeared to be the only ones in the room.

"I'd love some, thanks." Kevin said.

"Ok I'll be back in a few minutes." I heard the door close.

I seemed to be conscious a lot longer this time. I didn't hear anything for a short while, then I felt a hand on mine.

Kevin? Is he...holding my hand?

"Please wake up." Kevin said, "I don't want to lose the opportunity to get to know you."

You won't. I will wake up soon. I will. I want to get to know you too.

"I don't kno.....I'm not sure if...." it was evident that his emotions were getting the best of him, "I'm hoping that the look we shared wasn't just my imagination."

It wasn't. It wasn't your imagination. I felt it too.

"I will be here every night until you wake up Jeff." Kevin whispered, "I promise."

Kevin....

I felt a tear form. I felt a tear form, and it slide down the side of my face. I wonder if he see's it. Come on Kevin.

The door opened, "Ok...I picked you up a sandwich as well. I hope you like roast beef."

Kevin stood and I felt my hand slide out of his. No! Kevin! Look at me!

"Roast beef is fine. Thank you." Kevin said.

I heard him unwrapping the sandwich. I felt someone sit on the edge of the bed. I assumed it was Jennifer.

"Oh my god!" Jennifer screamed scaring the crap out of me. If I was awake, I would have jumped about 8 feet, "Kevin...look."

"What is it?" he sounded shaken himself.

"There's a tear!" I could feel them breathing close to my face.

"What??" Kevin sounded shocked, "I'm going to go get the doctor."

"Oh my god! This is fantastic!" Jen started dialing her cell phone, "Mom? He may be waking up. Don't rush though. Take your time. The doctor hasn't checked on him yet."

"The doctor is on his way." Kevin said a little out of breath, "Did he open his eyes?"

"No. Not yet." Jen sounded excited.

"Jeff. Wake up Jeff." I felt Kevin's hands on my face and could feel his breath as he spoke close to my face, "C'mon Jeff. Wake up."

"What did you say to him?" Jennifer finally clicked in.

"Huh?" Kevin sounded confused.

"What were you saying to him? The tear...what were you saying?" she was becoming more excited.

"Oh...it..well..." he was having trouble telling her.

"Kevin. It's ok. I've already figured it out. I was asking so that you could continue. It was obviously working. So keep going!" Jen almost screamed.

"Right..." Kevin lowered his voice to near whisper, "Jeff. It's time to wake up. I'm waiting here for you. Wake up."

I felt my eyes move. I want to move Kevin. I'm trying to wake up.

"His eye's are moving. Where's the doctor?" Kevin was now becoming excited as well.

"I'm not sure, I'll go look. Keep talking to him!" Jen ran out of the room.

Kevin leaned into my ear, "Jeff, I know you can hear me. Please wake up now."

I'm trying. Where was I shot? What could have caused this much damage? Why can't I wake up? I WANT TO WAKE UP!

"His eyes are opening!" Kevin shouted.

"Excuse me sir, I need to get by." a strange man's voice entered the room.

Everything was extremely blurry. I couldn't make out anyone. A figure in white came close and started to examine me. I figured this was the doctor. My mind was a blur and I was trying to talk.

"Wh...what's..." I tired to speak.

"Don't speak. Just lay back and relax please. I need to give you a look over." the doctor checked my eyes. The light was sharp and painful.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I took a sip from my apple juice I looked around the room. My mother was sitting beside me, my father was standing behind her, my sister was on the other side of the bed beside me, and behind my sister was a strange man.

"So..." I slowly broke the silence, "What..happened?"

"We were hoping you could tell us." Jennifer chuckled.

"I...have no idea. I don't remember a thing." I tried to remember what had happened, "Where's Rick?"

Jennifer gave me an odd look.

"What?" I asked.

"N-nothing. He went home to rest. He'll be back in a short while." Jennifer said nervously, "I'll be right back. Kevin, follow me."

Jennifer and the tall strange guy left the room.

"What's going on mom? Who was that guy?" I ask confused.

"It's nothing dear. Just finish your apple juice. Your father and I are going to go speak to the doctor.

"Ok." I sipped on my apple juice. But something didn't feel right. Something was horribly wrong, and I knew it. I just couldn't put my finger on it.

**Out in the hallway*

"I'm really sorry. It appears he has amnesia." the doctor explained to Jennifer, her parents, and Kevin.

"Amnesia?" Jeff's mother sobbed.

"How bad is it?" his father asked.

"Well. It depends. How far back is he remembering?" the doctor asked.

"Not sure, but he asked about Rick." Jennifer exclaimed.

"And who's Rick?" Kevin asked.

Jennifer looked at Kevin and begrudgingly answered, "His ex."

"When did they break up?" the doctor asked.

"Around 3 months ago." Jennifer winced.

"Hmm...that's not too bad. It should only be a short time before his memory returns. He's only 3 months behind. It'll be a matter of weeks." the doctor assured everyone.

"Ok...I'm going to have to call Rick. I don't even think he knows anything has happened. Kevin, can I talk to you first though please, privately." Jennifer pulled Kevin away from everyone.

Jennifer looked at Kevin, "Look. I'm pretty sure I know why you're here. I think you have feelings for my brother. However strange it is, I can see that."

Kevin nodded, obviously embarrassed.

"That's totally fine Kevin. You seem like a nice guy. But I need your help." Jennifer continued.

"Anything." Kevin smiled.

"My brother still thinks he's with his ex. His ex left him 3 months ago. He announced one day that he was moving out of the house, and into his new lovers house. Jeff was devastated. He's going to remember these things. When he does remember, he's going to remember you too. If you're not planning to stick around long enough for that to happen, I need to know now." Jennifer looked Kevin dead straight in the eyes.

"Jennifer, I don't know what the future is going to hold. I really don't. I do know that something happened between your brother and I when we bumped into each other. It was...as if the entire world stopped. I'm will definitely be sticking around long enough for him and I to talk. I mean, when he remembers. Beyond that, I can't promise anything." Kevin responded sincerely.

"That's good enough for me. Now I need to call the bastard." Jennifer pulled out her cell phone and dialed a number. "Rick? It's Jen."

"Hi." Rick responded, "Uh..what's up?"

"Well, there's been an incident." Jennifer started, "Last week Jeff was shot in the shoulder."

"What?! Why are you calling me NOW?" Rick shouted.

"Calm down. That's the least of our concern right now." Jennifer snapped.

"What do you mean?" Rick became worried. "He's not..."

"NO!" Jennifer shouted in irritation, "He's lost some of his memory Rick. At least 3 months of it."

"You're..kidding...right?" Rick wasn't enthused, "He conveniently forgot about our breakup? You have got to be kidding me."

"This isn't about you Rick. The doctor says this is completely normal. Jeff hit his head really hard on the concrete. He's developed a small case of amnesia. He said it'll last for a few weeks before his memory starts to return to normal." Jennifer explained.

"Unbelievable. What is it exactly that you want from me?" Rick asked already knowing the answer.

"Rick, as far as Jeff is concerned, you never left him. You need to come here. Alone. You need to act as of nothing has happened in the last 3 months. He knows he's lost some of his memory, we just can't tell him what he's forgotten. We run the risk of cause severe brain damage and losing those memories for good if he goes into shock. Do you understand Rick?" Jennifer was pleading at this point.

Rick sighed deeply into the phone, "I get it. I understand. I'll be there shortly."

"Rick...alone." Jennifer reminded him.

"Understood." Rick hung up.

Jennifer looked up at Kevin, "I don't know what we're going to do. Rick's not going to handle this well. I'm afraid he's going to screw up."

"Don't worry. We'll get through it. Jeff will be fine." Kevin gave Jennifer a hug.

**Back in Jeff's room*

"Mom?" Jeff looked over at his mother.

"Yes honey?" his mother responded.

"Who was that guy with Jennifer?" Jeff asked curiously.

"Uh...well..." Jeff's mother stumbled to find an answer.

"He's my friend." Jennifer came in and answered for her mother, "His name is.."

"Brian." Kevin smiled.

"Yes...Brian." Jennifer grinned.

"Hi Brian. Nice to meet you." Jeff extended his hand.

"Jeff! Thank god you're alright!" Rick stormed into the room.

"Baby!" Jeff tried to get up, "OW. Ow..."

"Don't try to get up!" Jeff's mother scolded him.

Rick gave Jeff a kiss. Jennifer didn't find it very convincing.

"What's wrong Rick?" Jeff looked very concerned.

"Uh..nothing. I was just worried. I'm glad you're ok." He gave Jeff a more convincing kiss this time, "I'm so glad."

Rick winked at Jennifer as he hugged Jeff.

She was worried they weren't going to pull it off. Kevin excused himself into the hall. Jennifer followed.

"Are you ok Kevin?" Jennifer asked.

"I'm fine. Just trying to let things settle in my head right now. I didn't want to tell him my name cause I was afraid I might trigger something." Kevin half-smiled.

Jennifer smiled, "I understand. Brian" she winked.
