"That was such a good movie wasn't it Randy?" Cindy asked. Cindy was Randy's girlfriend. They were closer than any other couple that their friends knew. They knew they were meant for each other. They had been together for years now and were excited about both going to college somewhere close to each other and getting their lives together. Randy knew he was adopted and wanted nothing more than to settle down with a normal family of his own and care for them. "Yeah it was but I wish we could have stayed in there. It was a lot warmer. Why does it always have to get so cold in Connecticut?" Randy said as he pulled Cindy in close to him. "Yeah but it just means that we get to stay close together for warmth" Cindy said as she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. "Yeah I love that part but I wish I had come from California or something where it's warm all the time." Randy said ironically. "It's ok baby maybe someday we'll move out there." Cindy said as she looked up into Randy's blue eyes. He looked at his girlfriend with such love and knew that they'd be together forever. The couple walked into Randy's house and were greeted by two somber parents sitting at a table holding hands. "Hey Mom, Dad, what's wrong" Randy said as Cindy came over and sat down. "Hey guys...we have some bad news." Randy's parents said. Randy and Cindy sat down at the table. "What is it?" Randy said concerned "Your dad and I have cancer." The mom said somberly. "Both of you?" Randy asked incredulously. "Yes, I have breast cancer and your father has lung cancer from smoking." The mother said with a tear in her eyes. This was very hard on her. "I don't believe it." Randy said "Well both of us have been meaning to get to the doctors...we've both been so busy with work that I guess it's been longer than expected. We both must have contracted it sometime this past year." The father said grasping his wife's hand a little harder. "How much longer do they expect?" Cindy asked seeing as Randy seemed a little out of it. "Both cases could have been caught earlier." The mom said. "What are you saying Mom?" Randy asked "It doesn't look good." His mom answered Randy shot up from the table and ran for his room. The mother got up and ran after him. "That's great two sets of parents have abandoned me now." Randy said through tears. His mother ran after him but stopped when a door slammed in her face and locked. She put her head against the door and cried. She sobbed uncontrollably. "I'm sorry." She whispered. -July 7, 1999 Randy knelt down next to two twin tombstones and put his head down. "Our father who art in heaven..." Randy began to pray. One minute his world was fine and it seemed like with the blink of an eyelid his world shattered and his parents were dead. They were the greatest people he knew. They were so incredibly compassionate and never made him feel like he wasn't one of their own kids. They couldn't have kids so they adopted Randy. They never really knew much about before the adoption agency, just that some woman named Julie dropped him off. He felt as if a part of him was gone and wasn't sure how he was gonna take care of himself. His parents didn't have that much money. They both worked to get by. Those college plans seemed a bit out of the question now. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and saw Cindy's dad. Randy got up and took his hand. "Mr. Townsend" Randy said. "Hey Randy how are you feeling?" Mr. Townsend said. "I've been better" Randy said as he looked down at the tombstones. "I want you to come live with us Randy. Actually you don't have much choice in the matter. I mean, you turn 18 in less than a month but at least give it a shot. I would honestly love to accept you into our family." Mr. Townsend said. Randy wasn't sure what to do. It had been an incredible emotional few months and he was ready to feel loved again. He just fell into his arms and started to sob. -August 1, 1999 "Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday dear Randy Happy birthday to you" "Make a wish." Cindy said as she put the cake down in front of her boyfriend. Randy was quiet for a second. He ran his hands through his short brown hair and then blew out the candles. "What'd you wish for?" Cindy asked him. "Couldn't tell you...it won't come true." Randy said as he leaned in and kissed her. The party went on without a glitch, Randy receiving presents from Cindy's parents and from her. He also got a few long distance presents from his adoption parents' relative. He and Cindy were downstairs just watching TV on the couch when Cindy shut off the set. "Something wrong?" Randy asked "I have to tell you something." Cindy said. "Ok." Randy said, not sure if he could take any more news these days. "I wanted to tell you earlier but everything with your parents went down and I never really got the chance." Cindy said Randy just looked into her eyes waiting for the news. "I'm pregnant" Cindy said. -November 22, 1999 "I need some water in here!" the doctor screamed out the words that rang through Randy's head. He felt as if he'd heard those words somewhere before but just shook it off. They were going to keep the baby and start a life together, he and Cindy. Randy needed stability in his life and thought that this might be it. He had secured a job and was already looking at apartments for his new family. It wasn't going to be easy but he knew he could do it. With his girl he felt that he could accomplish anything. "I'm here for you baby." Randy said holding Cindy's hand. "Randy I'm having second thoughts about this." Cindy said through breaths. "Baby...look into my eyes. We can do this together." Randy said comforting her. "Ok Cindy I need you to push." The nurse said. With one final push and scream the doctor pulled a baby boy out and held him up. Randy looked at his son and thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in the world. -April 3, 2000 Randy was laying in bed with his son holding a necklace above his head. The baby cooed and reached for the necklace. That smile and laugh was enough to keep Randy in heaven. The phone rang. "Who do you think that is Johnny?" Randy cooed to his baby boy. He got up off the bed and answered the phone. "Hello?" Randy asked "Hey baby it's me" Cindy said. "Hey Cin...how was shopping with your parents?" Randy asked. "It was good. I just wanted to tell you we're on our way home now." Cindy said "Sounds good. Can't wait to see you." Randy said. "How's Johnny?" Cindy asked "Beautiful." Randy said looking at his baby on the bed. "I think I'm gonna have to compete with him for your love." Cindy said with a laugh. "Never...hey baby...when you get home I need to ask you something." Randy said as he pulled a box out of his pocket. It contained a ring. "Ok, be home in like 20 minutes. Love you. Bye." Cindy said as she hung up. "Bye babe." Randy hung up the phone and went to lay down next to his sleeping son. Before long, both of them were out. The phone woke him up however as it rang again. Randy looked at the clock and saw that it had been about an hour. He didn't hear any noise in the house though. "Hello?" Randy said into the phone. "Is this Randy Parker?" a deep voice asked "Yes, who is this?" Randy asked. "This is Sergeant O'Connell from police headquarters downtown. We need you to come down as soon as you can." He said. "Is there something wrong?" Randy asked "We just need you to come down." He said. "Please officer is there something wrong." Randy said louder "Son, I regret to inform you that Cindy Townsend and her parents were killed earlier in a car crash." He said. Randy froze. -June 24, 2000 "Fuck, what time is it?" Randy said as he woke up. He looked over at a man sleeping next to him that he had no idea who it was. He got up out of bed and clutched his head with a serious hangover. "Fuck I got a doctor's appointment in 10 minutes." Randy said out loud to no one. His one night lover was out anyway. He got up and almost puked. "I hope that's from the alcohol." Randy said as he closed the door. He walked into the free clinic and sat down. He had come in a few weeks ago to get a stomach virus checked out and the doctor had asked him how he was doing. He answered with his usual "I've been better". The doctor then asked him about all these sexual questions. He convinced him that it wouldn't hurt to take the tests. The doctor obviously recognized the depression mode he was in and wanted to make sure he wasn't just throwing his life away. It turned out to be amazing insight. "I'm sorry Randy. You have AIDS." The doctor said. "Hello?" Donna answered the phone with Johnny in her hands. "Hey Donna it's Randy. How's my boy?" Randy said with tears in his eyes trying to hide them. Donna was an old friend who looked after Johnny from time to time. "Hey Randy...he's good. What's up?" Donna asked "We gotta talk." Randy said. TO BE CONTINUED... <<<< Not bad huh?
