Chapter 5

Kevin had actually heard Kristin pounding on the door, even with the room being soundproofed. There's a small microphone hidden in the door frame of the door, so that Kevin can hear what's going on outside of his office, if he so chooses. After he had come into his office, and closed and locked the door, he sat down at his desk, and flipped the switch to turn on the microphone. At first Kevin heard nothing, but then the distinct sound of hands pounding on the door came through loud and clear, as well as Kristin's pleas for him to change his mind.

Kevin isn't a heartless person, and to say that Kristin's pleas and sobbing didn't effect him, would be very much so untrue. He too started to cry when he heard the desperation in Kristin's voice. Kevin honestly did not want to hurt Kristin, though he knew that this would hurt her. But, it was also better then continuing to lead her on. The longer Kevin waited to tell Kristin that he wasn't in love with her, and wanted a divorce, the harder it would become. Kevin is however, beginning to think that perhaps he might have been just a little too insensitive to Kristin. Of course considering what Kevin's original plan of having Kristin find out about the divorce was, he quickly pushes the thought out of his mind.

Originally Kevin had thought about leaving the house for a few days on some sort of business trip that came up at the last minute. Then, while he was gone, the process server would undoubtedly show up to serve Kristin with the divorce papers, and then Kevin wouldn't have to see the look on Kristin's face. But, Kevin, being the kind person that he is, realized that this would probably be just as heartless and cruel as Brian's earlier idea of packing up all of Leighanne's belongings, placing them on the front steps, and having the locks changed. So, Kevin decided that telling Kristin face to face was the best idea, instead of letting her find out when a process server suddenly shows up to serve her with the divorce papers.

Kevin once again unlocks the secret compartment in the floor under his desk, and removes the picture of him and Nick in the heart-shaped frame, as he runs his fingers over it.

"Oh God, Nick, I love you so much," replies Kevin, "But I can't risk loosing you. I just can't tell you about how I feel. I'll get out of this sham of a marriage, but only Brian will know the real reason that I divorced Kristin. As hard as it will be to lie to you Nick, not to mention Howie and AJ, I have to. I'd rather die a lonely old man all alone in some nursing home then to see you hate me. And I know that you'll hate me if you know the truth. Oh God, Nick, I wish that we could be together, but it's just never going to happen. It can't happen. In a perfect world maybe, but the world is far from perfect."

----

Brian looks around the house, as he finishes up the last of his preparations. He decided that he'd give Leighanne a nice dinner, before breaking the news to her. He knows that no matter what he does or how he does it, Leighanne will most definitely have an adverse reaction to him calling off the wedding. The last thing Brian really wants to do is hurt Leighanne, but marrying her when he's in love with someone else would do just that in the long run, and that would most likely be ten times worse then the hurt caused by calling of the wedding.

Brian does one more scan of the room, making sure everything looks good, before going out into the living room just as Leighanne walks through the front door.

"Brian, honey, there you are," replies Leighanne, "I was looking for you."

"You were?"

"Yes, when I came back from my errands earlier you were no where to be found, and I got a bit worried. I went over to Kevin's house, and Kristin told me that you were there but left, as had Kevin, about twenty minutes before I got there."

"I'm sorry, I just had to go talk to Kevin about some things, and then had a few errands of my own to run."

"Well, it's no problem. You know, I have to wonder if something is going on over at your cousin's house tonight."

"Why do you say that, Leigh?"

"Well, Kevin came home with a bouquet of flowers, told Kristin in a very serious tone that they needed to talk, and practically threw me out of the house. I hope everything is okay."

"I'm sure everything is just fine," replies Brian, "How about we go into the dining room and eat dinner before it gets cold?"

Leighanne just smiles, as she follows Brian into the dining room of the house. The house is in Brian's name, but Leighanne insisted that Brian let her pay the down payment on it. So, Brian also knew right away, even before he had said it to Kevin, that his idea of changing the locks and putting all of Leighanne's belongings on the front steps wouldn't work very well. That's why he has decided to transfer ownership of the house to Leighanne. Brian figures that it's the least he can do, since he's about to rip Leighanne's heart right out of her chest, and then stomp on it. Not literally of course, but that's beside the point.

Anyway, after a nice dinner, Leighanne and Brian adjourn to the living room. Leighanne sits down on the sofa, as Brian sits down on the arm of a nearby chair. He's been running over in his mind what exactly he would say to Leighanne for hours now, but now that the time has come to say it, he's not sure if he's satisfied with what he decided to tell her. Just as Brian was about to open his mouth to start his much dreaded speech, the doorbell rings. Leighanne gives Brian a quick smile, and gets up to answer the door. She is met with Kristin, tears streaming down her face, and all of her luggage packed, sitting with her on the doorstep, as a cab drives off into the night.

"Kristin, what's wrong?"

"It's over."

"What's over?"

"My marriage. My marriage is over."

"What? Kristin, you're scaring me, now what's wrong? You're not making any sense."

"My marriage is over, Leigh! Kevin filed for divorce this afternoon. Oh God in Heaven, Kevin is divorcing me!!" screams out Kristin, before even more tears begin to pour out of her eyes.

----

'What was with that dream?' thinks Nick to himself as the dream replays in his head. He honestly doesn't understand what could have possibly triggered him to dream of his best friend raping him. Then to have his best friend replaced by the man he loves, saying that this is a one time deal, and calling Nick a faggot.

"That's likely what Kevin would call me if he knew though," replies Nick, "His religion speaks so vehemently against homosexuality, that I'm sure that Kevin would hate me with every fiber of his being if he knew I was gay. He could never return my feelings of love and adoration, that's for sure. Oh God, why? Why is it so easy for some people to go through life and find the happiness that they deserve, but so hard for others? Why have I been thrown in with all of those people who are cursed to remain miserable and unhappy for the rest of their lives, yet have to act like they're on top of the world? Maybe I should just try to find happiness with a girl, and forget about Kevin..."

----

"What? Why on earth would Kevin file for divorce?" asks Leighanne, totally shocked as she leads Kristin into the living room, where Brian is sitting.

"He says that he never loved me," replies Kristin, as she continues to cry, "He says that he only married me to try and continue to deny to himself that he was gay! He says he can't do it anymore, and that he's sorry if he's hurt me, but he has to right this wrong."

"Oh my, Kristin, I'm so sorry," replies Leighanne, as she pulls Kristin into a hug, "God, Brian I never knew how big of a jerk your cousin is."

"Shutup Leighanne, shutup! You should know by now that I won't stand for anyone insulting my family. Not for any reason!"

"Brian don't tell me that you're condoning what Kevin did. He married Kristin under false pretenses. He lead her on for months, proposed to her, made her think that he loved her, when in reality he'd rather go crawl into bed with another man. Brian he's a faggot!"

"Shutup, God damnit!" screams Brian at the top of his lungs, with a rage in his eyes that Leighanne has never seen.

Leighanne may not be a genius, but she is smart enough to know that she has succeeded in getting Brian very angry, considering that he just took the Lord's name in vain. Brian is a very religious person, and he only takes the Lord's name in vain when he is exceedingly angry, and it takes quite a lot of pushing to get him to that point. Leighanne has actually never heard Brian take the Lord's name in vain, but she knows from talking with the others that he has done it on occasion, but only after he got very, very angry.

"Leighanne, I will not sit here and listen to you call my cousin that horrid name in my house!" yells Brian, "And before you say anything, Leighanne, this is my house. True enough that you paid for the down-payment, but the house is in my name, and my name only. So while I am Lord and Master of this house you will never again call my cousin or anyone else in my family a faggot. Or God help me you will regret it!"

"Brian, I'm sorry. But how can you take Kevin's side in this? He was down right terrible to Kristin."

"I am taking Kevin's side because he is my cousin, and I love him dearly," replies Brian, having calmed down a bit, "And because there's something that you don't know Leighanne."

"And what pray tell is that?"

"I'm bi-sexual," screams Brian, as he says this Leighanne's face drains of all color, and her face becomes expressionless, "That's right Leighanne, I'm bi-sexual. So in a way, I'm like my cousin. You're marrying a faggot. Wait, I take that back, you're not marrying a faggot."

Leighanne looks very confused, until that is Brian replies, "You're not marrying anyone! At least you're not marrying me. The wedding is off Leighanne."

Upon saying this Brian runs upstairs and grabs his already packed luggage. The house is indeed in Brian's name, but all of the furniture, with the exception of a few small pieces that Brian has already loaded into his car, belongs to Leighanne. Within a matter of minutes, Brian is back in the living room, his packed bags in his hands.

"I'm leaving now Leighanne," replies Brian, "Don't try to stop me, because you won't succeed. Don't try to come after me, or convince me to marry you, because again, you won't succeed. I'll sign the house over to you in the morning, as I will be living with Kevin for the foreseeable future. Goodbye Leighanne, goodbye forever. If I never see you again, it will be too soon."

To be continued...

Well, here is Chapter 5 of The Perfect Couple. I hope that it was worth the wait. The next chapter should be out sometime in January, though when exactly, I'm not sure. Please let me know what you thought of this chapter, as I'd like to know what the readers are thinking about the direction this story is going. Also, if you have any suggestions, I'll gladly take them under consideration. I might not find a place to use them in this series, but that doesn't mean that I can't find some use for them at some point in the future in another story.
