The Perfect Couple: Kevin and Nick

Chapter 7

The shock of hearing it sends Nick into a panic. Before he even realizes what he's doing, he jumps up and bolts out of the house. Minutes later, his car is racing down the street at about eighty miles per hour, despite the twenty-five mile per hour residential speed limit. Nick's mind is in total chaos at the moment. Shortly, Nick arrives home, and quickly heads up to his apartment, and throws himself down onto his bed to think. He never thought in a million years that he would ever here the words, "I'm gay" coming from Kevin's mouth, but he did. Nick isn't exactly sure what happened, what caused him to react the way he did. All he knows is that when he heard those words, something in him snapped.

He was suddenly faced with the fact that what he had come to accept as being completely and utterly impossible, was actually just the opposite. He knows that it isn't going to look good to Kevin or to Brian, the way he just ran out of there like that. Both of them are probably thinking right now that Nick must hate them too, just like Howie. Of course nothing could be further from the truth.

"Oh my God, what have I done?" asks Nick, as tears begin to stream from his eyes, "I'm sure I just made Kevin think I hate him and ruined any chance that I might have had with him. Oh, God, I am such an idiot!"

When Kevin saw Nick get up and run out the door like that, it was like someone reached into his chest, ripped his heart from his body and then proceeded to jump up and down on it. His sobbing intensified to the point that he could hardly breathe, and his eyes were so blurred with tears that he couldn't see. AJ and Brian both tried to comfort him, but Kevin pulled away from them, and made his way up the stairs, stumbling a few times, and finally into his office where he locked himself in.

Both AJ and Brian watched Kevin as he went up the stairs, only one of them really understanding why Kevin was so torn up. After a moment, AJ looks over to Brian and replies, "Brian, do you have any idea what has gotten Kevin so upset?"

"Alex, I really don't think it's my place to say."

"Come on, Bri! Kevin is in pain, and I want to help him. But I can't if I don't know what's wrong. Now tell me damnit!"

"Okay, okay," replies Brian, "Well, you saw how Nick got up and left so abruptly without a word?"

"Yeah, of course I did," replies AJ, "But, that can't possibly be what caused Kevin to react to intensely. I mean you and Nick are best friends, and I would think you would be the one who would be taking his rejection badly."

"Yes, well, Alex there's something that you don't know."

"Well, then tell me, so that I will know and can understand what is going on here."

"To put it simply, Kevin is in love with Nick."

"What?"

"Kevin loves Nick."

"Oh my God, no wonder Kevin reacted so badly!" replies AJ, as he finally understands why his friend is so upset, "Oh man, this is a tough situation."

"Yes, it is. And I fear it will only get worse."

"What do you mean, Bri?"

"Alex, Kevin loves Nick with all of his heart and all of his soul. Obviously, Kristin doesn't know this, but on their wedding night, Kevin was thinking of Nick while making love to Kristin. He had to think of Nick in order to be able to get and keep a hard-on."

"Oh dear, I certainly hope that Kristin never finds out about that," replies AJ, "As if she probably isn't already mad enough at Kevin, but if she finds out that Kevin was thinking about Nick on their wedding night, I don't even want to imagine her reaction."

"I know, it's not possible that it'd be a good reaction," replies Brian, "Kevin is afraid that Kristin and Leighanne will go to the tabloids. And that it will be front page news in every tabloid magazine in the country by tomorrow morning that Kevin is gay, and I'm bi."

"Well, as bad as that would be," replies AJ, "We can't think about that right now. We need to find some way to help Kevin. He needs our support."

"Alex, I couldn't agree with you more," replies Brian, "But I really don't know what we can do to help him. I think the only thing that is going to help Kevin is for Nick to accept him, and from his actions today, I'm not sure that that's going to happen."

"Well, we have to try, Brian," replies AJ, "Come on."

"Where are we going?"

"To Nick's apartment," replies AJ, "To talk to him and see why he ran out the way he did."

"I don't understand why he ran out," replies Brian, "It was quite shocking to me."

"Why is that, Bri?"

"Well, I went over to his apartment the other day and relieved him of his best man duties, since I was calling off the wedding."

"And?"

"And I told him everything. I told him that I was bi, and that was I was in lo..." Brian stops himself, and looks at AJ, hoping that he didn't pick up on that last part.

"Who are you in love with, Bri?" asks AJ, as his eyebrows curve upward, "And don't try to act dumb, I know what you stopped saying mid-sentence."

"Okay, I told him that I'm in love with Lance."

"*NSYNC's Lance?"

"Yes, *NSYNC's Lance," replies Brian, "Sheesh, why does everyone I tell that to ask that? I mean how many Lances do we know for crying out loud? Anyway, Nick accepted the fact that I was bi, and in love with a man. Or if he didn't accept it, he certainly didn't make his feelings known to me."

"Okay, well, then there most be some reason for his reaction," replies AJ, "I think it's time we go over to Nick's house and talk with him."

"You go Alex," replies Brian, "I think I should stay here. Just in case Kevin needs anything."

"Okay, Bri," replies AJ, as he stands up, "Just remember, as long as you and Kevin are happy, I'm happy. And I'm sure that Howie will come around eventually, it'll just take some time."

"Well, I hope so."

"Bri, don't worry about it. That dickhead will come to accept it eventually, because there's nothing he can do to change it, and I highly doubt that he's going to try to breakup the band or something. It's probably one of, if not the, best thing that's ever happened to him. C-ya later, Bri."

"C-ya Alex."

Half an hour later, Nick is awoken by the sound of a knock on the door. He shakes his head for a moment, to try and get his bearings. He must have cried himself to sleep. Nick stands up, and quickly goes over to a full-length mirror, making sure he looks presentable. When he's satisfied that his appearance is as close to normal as it's going to get, he heads out of his bedroom and into the living room, where he opens the door to find AJ.

"Hey Alex," replies Nick, "What's up?"

"I was about to ask you the same question?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, could I come in? I'd really rather not discuss this with you while standing in the hallway."

"Sure," replies Nick, as he moves aside and lets AJ in, before closing the door.

Nick walks over to the sofa and collapses onto it, before saying, "Okay, Alex, now what did you want to talk to me about?"

"I wanted to know what the hell happened this afternoon, Nick."

"What do you mean?"

"What do you mean, 'what do you mean'? Nick, I'm talking about the way that you got up and ran out of Kevin's house without saying a single word. What the fuck is up with that?"

"I don't know why I did that."

"Neither do I. Brian told me that he told you yesterday that he was bi-sexual and your reaction seemed good. So, why did you not say anything after finding out that Kevin was gay? After what Howie said, you should have stayed behind and comforted Brian and Kevin like I did. Hearing those words from him really hurt him. But, you're running out without a single word seemed to hurt Kevin fifty times worse."

When Nick hears this, he sits up and asks, "What do you mean?"

"After you ran out, Kevin's sobbing and tears intensified to the point that he could hardly see or breath. He ran up the stairs, stumbling a few times, and locked himself in his office."

After several moments of silence, Nick finally breaks the silence and replies, "Do you have any idea why he reacted like that."

"No, I don't. Your guess is as good as mine," lies AJ, because it really isn't his place to tell Nick that Kevin is in love with him, and he's pretty sure that if he were to say, 'It's not my place to tell you, Nick," that he'd probably catch on that he knew the reason, and Nick would in turn do everything necessary to drag it out of him. No, Nick would just have to find out on his own about Kevin's feelings.

Nick lies back down on the sofa, and closes his eyes for a moment, as images of Kevin sobbing pass through his mind. Nick had thought that his actions today would certainly cause Kevin a lot of pain, but hearing from AJ that Kevin is in pain, and the extent of that pain, only makes Nick feel fifty times worse then he already did. Knowing that he will soon by onslaught by more tears, he quickly replies, "Um, AJ, if you don't mind, I'd like to be alone for awhile. I need time to think."

"Yeah, sure, Nick, whatever," replies AJ, as he heads over to the door and out of Nick's apartment, all the while thinking to himself, "Somehow I get the feeling that this group is going to be having another member coming out of the closet soon."

Nick curls up into a ball on the sofa, and quivers a bit, as his tears overtake him, and he begins to sob once again.

"Oh God, I've hurt Kevin, I never wanted to do that! Oh, I don't know what to do. I don't know why Kevin reacted so badly to my reaction today, but it couldn't possibly be because he likes me. Could it?" thinks Nick to himself, before a voice rings out in his head, answering him, "No, of  course not, Nick don't be stupid. You're not worthy of such a great and caring man like Kevin! He could never love you! Never!"
