I stayed with my grandfather because I didn't want to be bored to death all day at the doctor's office. Plus, it was a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Chicago from our little farm town in Indiana. Besides, I always loved hanging out with my Gramps, mostly because when my parents and grandma weren't around, he would spoil me. That's just one of the many reasons that I really love him so much. They left in the van about 8 that morning. Dad fixed a pallet on the folded down back seat so Patrick could be comfortable. The doctor had given him some pills to help with his pain and he slept a lot on Saturday and Sunday. Gramps came to the house on his tractor to picked me up so we could go do some work around their pond. Gramps is a very big man, over 6 foot tall and he weighs over 200 pounds. He is a what my mom calls a manly man, very tough on the boys, but I had him wrapped around my little finger. He always takes my side when Patrick and I have a quarrel. Anyway, I helped him pull some dead trees away from the rim of the pond. The beavers had dragged the trees up there close to the water's edge so they could build a dam, but Gramps didn't want them to block off his creek. So, we had been working for about two hours before I had to pee, and I mean I had to pee bad. I asked Gramps if we could go back to the house so I could pee. It's just us out here princess, he said as he pointed to a tree nearby, go over there and pee, no one will see you. Here, he added, here is a tissue you can use to wipe off your wet little kitty after you are done. It felt so naughty when I pushed my jeans down so my naked bottom was showing. The warm air felt very good on my kitty, and it took a little while for my pee to start. I looked over my shoulder and could see Gramps looking toward me. I kind of changed my position so he could see my kitty when my pee started. I was peeing hard when I looked again, and Gramps was staring right at my kitty as I peed all over the tree. When I finished peeing, I wiped my kitty with the kleenex that Gramps gave me. What do I do with the kleenex Gramps? I asked after I pulled my jeans back up. Give it here, he said as he extended his hand. He to the wet Kleenex from me, then I saw him as he smelled it before he shoved it in his pocket and continued with his work. We were out there working until almost lunch time. Well, Gramps said, it's time to get some grub princess. Let's splurge and go into town to the Dairy Queen and get a good ol' cheeseburger and an ice cream cone. (I told you he spoiled me!) That sounds awesome! I squealed as I climbed the steps up onto the huge tractor. Gramps pushed me up the last little bit into the cab, his big hand felt good on my little butt, he always gave my butt a nice squeeze when he touches it. When we were in the tractor, I always sat on Gramps lap. I liked bouncing through the fields, sitting on his lap, "helping" him steer the big John Deere. While we were driving back to the house today, I felt something hard poking my butt. Gramps, I said. Do you have your knife or your gun or something hard in your pocket? No princess, he said, why do you ask? Nothing, I said, I just felt something hard poking me in my butt is all. He didn't say anything, but he did move around on the tractor seat a little bit until I wasn't getting poked any more. I figured out then it must have been his dick, and it was hard! When we turned the corner from the north field onto the trail leading to the back of the house, we saw a police car next to the house, all the cars' flashing lights were on and the sheriff was standing on the porch. Hi Sam, Gramps said as he turned the tractor off and climbed down. I jumped down into Gramps's arms then he turned to the sheriff. What could I do for you today? Howdy Edwin, the sheriff said, could we go inside and talk? I noticed that he had a very sad look on his face. Sure Sam, Gramps said, let me get Paige here situated. Paige, Gramps said, why don't you help grandma out by gathering the eggs from the hens. Make sure you shoo the rooster out, just so he doesn't try to flog you. Sure Gramps, I said cheerfully, I loved gathering the eggs. It took me about 20 minutes to get all the eggs, there were 34 altogether. I put them into the storage fridge, washed my hands and headed into the house. The sheriffs' car was gone so I called for Gramps. He didn't answer me, and I didn't hear anything going on in the house. I finally found him. He was in the den, sitting in his recliner, staring out the window with a sad and lonely look on his face as he slowly rocked in his chair. I could see tears on his cheek, I had never seen Gramps cry. I walked slowly to his side, before I touched his shoulder and asked, what's wrong Gramps? He looked down at me, his eyes were red, he had tears on his cheeks. He picked me up, cradled me to his chest pulling my chin onto his shoulder, holding me tight against him, slowly rocking the chair as he wept. He rocked me for a long time without talking at all. I remained quiet, scared, and unsure what I should even say, or do so I just hugged Gramps as we slowly rocked in his favorite chair. After a while he leaned his head down, as his chin touched my back and he whispered, Princess we got some very bad news, very bad news. I can't even believe it, but I need you to be strong Princess, be strong and keep holding me. What is it, what happened Gramps? I asked fearfully. On the way to the doctor's office in Chicago the van our family was in got hit by a big semi-truck, everyone inside the van was killed instantly, he cried as he told me. He grabbed me into a tight, loving hug and rocked us as we both cried and cried. A long time later, after it got dark, I guess Gramps must have taken me to bed. We didn't eat any lunch or dinner. I woke up the next morning in the bed my dad grew up sleeping in, my eyes were red, puffy, swollen. I was just wearing my panties; Gramps must have undressed me when he took me to bed. I know that I cried for a long time while I was thinking about mom and dad and Patrick all being gone. Grandma was gone too, what are we going to do without our family? Even in the morning light, I still couldn't believe they were all gone. I could hear gramps on the phone in the other room. He was being my Gramps, strong, taking care of every detail, always in control. I could hear other voices; people I wasn't sure if I knew them or not. I got up to use the bathroom, washed my face, then brushed my teeth before I went into the kitchen to face whoever was there. As soon as Mrs. Davis, the preacher's wife grabbed me up into her arms, I started crying again. She tried to console me for quite a while before Gramps came over and took me into his strong, manly arms, hugging me close to his body as everyone left the room. Princess, he said, we must be strong right now. Through the pain and hurt, the loneliness and emptiness, we have got to be so very strong for each other. I know how bad you are hurting, I know how deep the pain is too Princess, but we must be strong, to hold on for each other. I looked into his red eyes. I know that just yesterday he lost his wife of 52 years, his only son, his only grandson, and my mom too. I hugged him back, took a deep breath and slid from his arms. I was determined to be as strong as Gramps. I can do it for you Gramps, I said, I love you so much Gramps, I really do. I went and got some food to eat, tried to visit with as many people as I could but stayed close to Gramps when I could. He was talking to everyone, laughing sometimes, and shaking guys hands as they came and went. That was our life all week long. There were some kids that came around over the next few days, but I didn't feel like playing or talking to kids. My family died on Monday. On Friday the church held a funeral for everyone, all at once. Mommy's sister and my cousins were the only family that joined Gramps and me at the church. There were hundreds and hundreds of people there, singing and crying as my family laid in the front of the church in 4 shiny caskets. Patricks' whole football team was there in their game uniforms, they were all crying as much as me. At the end of the service, Gramps stopped at grandma's casket, knelt, placed his hands on the box and began to softly cry. I knelt next to him, put my arms around his shoulders and my face on his back and wept as well. After the service, we ate at the church with all the family and friends before Gramps and I headed back to the farm. We went into the den and collapsed on the sofa together. We cried a little more before Gramps said, let's get up and take a ride Princess. I got up and followed Gramps to the tack barn where he saddled 2 horses for our ride. He didn't say much as we led the horses down the path to the west pasture. The sun was going down, the sky was clear and the air crisp. Princess, Gramps started, this spot right here, right under this tree is where I asked your grandma to marry me 54 years ago, on the 4th of July. This spot right here is where she said yes. Then on the day that we got married we rode our horses right up here, right to this spot. We took off all our clothes and made love for the first time ever just as the sun went down. I didn't say a word as he told me his love story. He gently reined his horse to the right and began the slow ride back to the tack barn. He removed the saddles; then we curry combed our horses before turning them out to pasture. I slid under Gramps' arm as we walked back to the farmhouse. Princess, he said slowly, I guess we need to talk about where we want to live now. We could stay in this house; we could stay at your house or we could move elsewhere. Where would you prefer to stay Gramps? I asked. I think I would rather stay here for now anyway, unless you would be unhappy, he said. This place is where I have lived for all my life. It belonged to my mom and dad, before them my grandpa owned it. I'm not ready to turn this lifestyle loose unless it would make you happy. I had planned to spend the rest of my life making your grandma the happiest woman in the world. Now I am going to spend the rest of my life making my sweet princess happy. I hugged Gramps and said, let's stay here for now Gramps, it makes me happy when you are happy.
