Ratzlaff Subject: Adult Friends, Independence Day, chapter 10 revised Chapter 10 Doreen's room is filled with her anxiety over the impending visit with Paul. She sits on her bed waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Glancing at the clock on the wall, 11:10. She screams under her breath, "He better have a damn good reason for being late!" A knock on the door, "Come in" Dor says filled with anticipation for hopefully being Paul and maybe Tom's arrival. Dor slumps back in bed as she see's the door open and it being Anita. "What," Anita speaks, "they are not here yet?" Anita's voice filled with surprised questioning. "NO!" Doreen screams, "And they better have a damn good reason for being late!" "Settle down Doreen!" Anita demands. "You have no right to be dominating in this incident, we know not the reason for them being late, a number of things could have come up that are causing them to be delayed." "I'm sorry." Dor slumps back in bed realizing that her doctor is a powerful woman not to be made upset. "Do you have the test results?" "Yes I do," Anita answers her, "do you want the results now or later when Tom can hear the truth?" "Now please," Doreen speaks like as of a little girl awaiting her punishment for misbehaving. "O.K.," Anita starts opening the envelope, "lets get this all out in the open." * * * * * * Toml has slumped to the floor and is holding Bill, with Paul kneeling besides them, caressing Tom's back, all men are crying for joy. Bill is still repeating thank you's and crying as Tom notices the clock in the hall and looks at his watch. Breaking the clutches of Bill, looks over to Paul and motions to the clock. Paul realizes what time it is and motions to Tom he will go alone, it's alright, they know that each of them have equally important places to be at the same time, and neither of the responsibilities should be ignored. Paul leans over and gives Tom a kiss on the forehead, standing and heading to the elevator. The door to Ike's room opens and Dr. Marshall steps through. Paul hears Dr. Marshall tell Bill that he can see him now, but don't tire him out. Bill asks the Dr if Ike's son can go in too? The Dr. agrees and opens the door for the men to enter. Tom motions to the Dr. and Bill to wait a second, and runs down the hall and grabs Paul in full embrace. The elevator arrives and Tom looks deep into Paul's eye's. "Go ahead and offer to be the donor," Paul says with tears flowing down his cheeks, "I understand, and stand behind you in anything you want to do." Tom looks at Paul with tears rolling down his face, kisses him and runs back to where Dr. Marshall and Bill are waiting. Tom boards the elevator as he hears Tom call out, "I LOVE YOU PAUL!" the elevator doors shut and he is on his way to Doreen's room. * * * * * * Doreen, sitting on her bed, a look of total relief covering her face as Anita puts the envelope on the table beside the bed. The truth be known, the answers are plain and no more questions are unanswered. The silence in the room is nerve racking but... almost peaceful, for now, all that is needed is to have Tom and Paul arrive so Doreen can open up the flood gates and wash away the lies and hurt that she perpetrated against so many. "Well..." Anita breaks the silence, "do you feel better now my silly girl?" "Yes, I do." Doreen looks over to Anita. What did she say, `my silly girl', `my', could she be, is it possible, did she ever refer to her like that before, no, did she? Never. Was it possible, could she be? Is she? Dor's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of someone knocking on the door. "Come in." Doreen calls out as Tom comes through the door, eyes puffy and quite noticeable that he had been crying. "Hi Paul, glad you could make it. This is my doctor, Dr. Anita Yuri, where's Tom," Dor asks as Paul comes up to the bed, Dor notices Paul's face and exclaims, "What's wrong!" Dor is in shock over Paul's appearance. "Are you O.K.?" Paul collapses into the chair. "I'm fine Dor, been in I.C.U. all night with Tom's father." "His FATHER!" Dor exclaims. "I thought his father was dead?" Dor doesn't know what to make of the statement that Paul made, but willingly she would except any plausible answer. "It's a long story Doreen," Paul says, "Tom and I will tell you all about it later, how are you doing?" Doreen feels Paul's genuine concern over her wellbeing and is happy that he still can show even the smallest modicum of sympathy towards her. "Much better now. I know you must be in a bit of a hurry to get back to Tom so I will give you the option of hearing the long version or the short version of the story I need to tell you." Paul looks on at Doreen, realizing that he needed to hear everything that she had to say, and that he could tell Tom all about it when they get together later. "My time is here with you now, I will take the time to hear anything and everything you have to say." "Well," Doreen takes a deep breath as if she was about to dive into a bottomless pool, knowing she wasn't going to be able to get another breath for a long time. "It all started after the last major fight we had when you didn't call me for a few days. I was so worried that I had lost you, I was willing to do anything to ensure your return. I got all dolled up and went looking for a good time. I had just had my period, and you know me, after I have my period, I'm horny as hell." Paul and Dor giggle at Doreen's frankness, especially in front of Anita. "I found this guy standing outside of a bar in a very seedy part of town. Oh, damn Tom, he was fine! He had a pair of jeans on that had to be at least 2 full sizes too small for his small frame. You know me Paul, the clothes get me started, and if they are dressed in any way that can be described as being sexy, I get hornier, `if that's possible?' They both giggle again. "This guy was built and ripped in every muscular way imaginable. I pulled the car up to the curb and he comes over to where I stopped the Jag." Paul is surprised that this story is giving him an erection. "Well, I ended up taking him home, I wish I never had seen him. My God Tom, he stunk. I knew if I was going to make it with this guy, and keep myself from getting ill from his body odor, I knew we would have to take a shower together. I got him into the shower and noticed all the scars covering his body, scars from knives and maybe even gunshot wounds...." Paul's attention drifts off to another very different shower scene, one with him and Tom. His erection is getting more uncomfortable. "After the sex was done," Doreen rambles on, "he must of seen your picture of me on the dresser. I told him it was only a one night stand, he said he understood, but I guess I should have realized that he couldn't be trusted. The other day, I was laying out by the pool when the telephone rang, it was Carlos. I told him to never call me again and I hung up on him. He called back and I could tell he was drunk by the slur in his voice. He said he was coming over and to be ready for him. I tried to convince him that I was going out, but he said to be waiting for him if I knew what was good for me, and he also said something that made me go crazy, he said what would the gringo Tom say if he knew about us." With Paul's left eyebrow raised and right brow crunched down, barely made the audible sound of, "hum". I tried to call you, but there was no answer, I was frantic, I didn't know what to do, I thought of running, but I was in my publicly illegal bathing suit," that statement got Anita's attention, "and besides, there wasn't enough time. Right after I got off the phone from trying you, he rang the bell. I opened the door, he was so drunk he could barely walk. I thought that the best way to get this situation under control was to get him to drink some more and maybe pass out, then I'd call the cops and have him arrested as an intruder. I leaned over the open cabinet door to the bar to find that bottle of tequila, when he came up from behind me and slammed me against the bar." Doreen stops for a moment and tries desperately not to cry. Anita reaches over to her patient and holds her hand in comfort and support. Paul looks over to Anita, there is a sense of love and serious compassion in her attentiveness towards Doreen, he no longer worries about her being left alone, he knows Anita will be around to help her deal with anything that may come up in the future. "He grabs my string bikini shorts and rips them off of me and starts to penetrate my ass with his monster meat. No lube, no preparing me for it, just grabs me and slams that beast in me." Doreen's tone of voice changes and starts to show of the violation that she experienced and the hatred for the complete event. "I don't really know what happened then, I remember him saying something to the effect that I had missed him... I'm not sure, the only concrete memory that I have, was that of me on the phone to the police, Carlos lying in a pool of his own blood, and me with the gun in my hand." Looking up to Paul, Doreen stares directly at him and states. "The children were Carlos's, not your's. I am sorry for lying to you and I hope someday you will be able to forgive me for what I have done to you." A tear trails down Doreen's face. "I hope you realize I am being sincere." Paul stands and takes Dor's hand in his. "I do realize and I do forgive you, we all do things that we later regret, especially when we realize they were dumb mistakes." Dor takes his hand to her face and weeps quietly, "oh, thank you Paul." "Dor," Paul pulls his hand away from her face. "I want you to know that this doesn't change anything about you and me. I just can't be with you anymore, but I'm not totally cutting you out of my life, it's just that there is no chance of marriage now or in the future." "I really didn't think that there would be," Doreen states, "I'd be a fool to think that I could win you back." Paul looks over to Anita, she has a glow of pride while she is looking at Doreen. "What are you going to do about the baby?" Paul inquires. "I haven't decided yet, why?" Dor asks. "Oh, just don't make any rash decisions just yet, concentrate on getting over the injuries, and feeling better." Paul looks over to Anita and looks back at Dor. "And listen to your Dr., I think she really has your best interest at heart." "beep beep beep" "Oh dear," Anita begrudgingly announces, "duty calls. I'll be back in as soon as I can." Anita tenderly caresses the right side of Dor's face with her hand, "stay in bed now and don't worry about anything. O.K.?" "You're the Dr.!" Dor states with submission to Anita. As she leaves the room, Dor looks over to Paul, "Will you be honest with me?" "Of course Dor, you know I always have." Paul answers. "Well," Dor sheepishly says, "would you think less of me if I told you I think I might be... Bi?" Dor's face filled with a mix of anticipation and fear of Paul's reaction to the question. "Well," Paul shuffles around in his mind how to answer the question with out being unbelievable, "would you think any less of me if I told you that I was Gay?" Doreen sits back in bed not realizing what Paul had just said. Then suddenly putting the words together in a coherent form, she looks up at Paul who is wearing the grin of `just eating the canary,' opening her mouth, trying desperately to find the right words, but can only say, "Whaaaaaaat!" With a look of surprise and a bit of glee in her expression. * * * * * * Sitting by his bed, Tom holds his fathers hand as Ike sleeps. Bill is on the other side of the bed still sniffling from the tears and oh so happy. Tom's mind is overwhelmed with happiness, and thoughts of wonder if he could be a donor, or will there even be enough time for Ike to receive the kidney and would it even work for him. It's 1:30 in the afternoon and Paul hasn't come back yet. `What's taking him so long?' Tom asks himself. Could her company be that good, that Paul would rather be with her than with me? Looking back at his watch, 1:31. He motions to Bill and they step away from the bed. "Where can I find Ike's Dr?" Tom whispers to Bill as they stand by the two way mirror. "He should be here around 6:00 pm, why?" Bill asks. Tom looks at Bill, with tears welling up in his eye's, "I want to donate my kidney to my Father." Bill starts to cry again and grabs Tom in an embrace. Very quietly, almost inaudible, a voice comes from behind them. "Oh, I see, I'm not even dead yet, and my lover is making a play for my Son." Ike jokes to the two men. Bill gasps, "Ikey, your awake!!!" He rushes to the side of the bed and throws himself tenderly over his lover laying in the bed and sobs. Tom walks over to the bed and tenderly takes his fathers hand, looking into his fathers eye's. "Hi Dad, you know... you really didn't have to go through all this to get me to call you dad." Ike giggles a bit with Bill in between tears, looking at each other Bill and Ike agree, "Yup, he's my Son!" Ike clenches his son's hand as Paul sits down in the other chair next to the bed. "Dad, damn that sounds good," Tom says, "would you except my kidney if we are compatible?" "Before I say anything else," Ike begins, "I want you to know that I didn't contact you to try and get anything from you except the opportunity to tell you the truth." "I know," Tom say's, "so, how do you like your kidney, rare, medium, or well done?" "How about just being compatible you smart ass!" Ike says looking up at his son with love and happiness. "Deal!" Tom exclaims, as he leans over to kiss his father's forehead. * * * * * * 4:00 am, Paul stirs and wakes with Tom still asleep in his arms. Thinking back on the last 24 hours and all the changes that have come about. The miraculous waking of Ike from the coma, Doreen's confession as to the father of the children, not to mention the fantastic sex when they got home. Paul knew that he didn't have anything to really go by for comparing the sexual encounter, but... with being sexual with Tom for so short of time, he can't imagine the feeling of such ecstasy and happiness from the other few times that they have consummated there love for each other, and that includes there first time. Paul wonders though, what will happen tomorrow with the appointment with Dr. Marshall, for the testing of compatibility for Ike to receive Tom's kidney, if Doreen will be able to carry the baby to term, and if him and Tom should even think of adopting the child, or would Doreen change her mind and want to raise the child with Anita. "Anita," Paul whispers to himself then thinks on, now there's a strange twist, never in my mind did I ever think that Dor would consider the idea that she even might be bi, or gay for that matter. (Tom stirs) God, I love you Tom. What would I do if something went wrong and I'd lose you after just finding the real you. (Paul starts getting hard again as his member nudges Tom's leg.) Tom yawns, then rolls onto his back. "Hey," Tom whispers not to be to loud and waken Bill who is asleep on the sofa, "what are you doing awake, are you o.k.?" "Of course my love," Paul answers, "just thinking how lucky I am." "Lucky?" Tom asks "Yeh," Paul replies, "it's not every day that one gets the opportunity to have everything go right in there life as we have had today. We both are very lucky." "I guess you are right," Tom agrees, "especially considering how Ike woke up. What the.... are you hard again? You can't still be horny?" Paul gets this evil grin on his face, "Still...? Always with you!" They kiss. They giggle. A smile crosses Bill's face in the living room, while cuddling Ike's Coat.
