Yelled TC in the middle of Starbuck's, it turned a few heads, but you know New Yorkers, they're oblivious to everything. Before I even start going into what TC is yelling about in the first place I need to explain him. I met TC at school, we went to elementary school together, he was a grade below me and we lived near each other. We were never really close until high school, which is when we both got into theatre. My first show with my community theatre was with him, and after that we kind of became connected at the hip. Do you remember how I came out to my friends over a game of Truth or Dare? Well he was the one who asked the question, and when he came out I was one of the first people he told; we have never dated or kissed. Our relationship is somewhat weird, every year in high school, until he was a freshman in college, we had a fight on or around New Years that lasted until the anniversary of me coming out to him, which is in February. We shared everything with each other, I got the sick details of his sex life with both girls and guys, and he got to hear of my crush on Kyle. He pushed it for a while, then it was kind of dropped after Kyle graduated. I can't say that I care much about the sex life of my best friend, but maybe that's because I can't really stand the thought of having sex with a girl. TC has always thought of himself as short, he's just over 5'3'' swimmers build, brown hair and green eyes. Also sitting with us is Brooks; he's our third wheel I guess you could say. He's not an actor like TC and I, although he did do some shows with us in high school. His first show was my senior show during which I basically taught him how to sing in 12 weeks. He decided that music was the greatest thing in the world went on to major in vocal performance and now he coaches me. Yeah, strange isn't it; I taught my own vocal coach once upon a time, but the great thing about being long-time friends with him; FREE LESSONS. Brooks is tall, like 6' 5'', black hair and brown eyes, he's larger than the two of us in size, not huge either. "What can I say?" I replied to TC's shout, "I sort of got caught up in the moment. The crush of almost my entire high school career shows up at my stage door on Broadway, professes his love for me, then offers to walk me home. Besides the fact that I was dead tired and hardly coherent in the first place, I of course said `yes'. So, he walked me home and filled me in about his years during college and the military. When we got to my apartment I felt odd not inviting him in, but after we finished talking I felt odd asking him to leave. I just asked him to stay the night instead of going all the way back to his hotel at 3 in the morning. So, he said yes..." "Of course he's going to say yes, he wants in your pants! Why else did he drive 12 hours and see a show 5 times that you were in, just to become friends. I really don't think so." TC interrupted "Will you shut up and let him finish, Scott at least has some class when it comes to guys" Brooks said shutting up TC "Fine," I continued "He offered to take the couch and let me take my bed, but I told him that since we have slightly known each other for a while I said we should be alright to stay in the same bed." "O-M-G you have less class then I thought you did, you had sex with him the first night, I can't believe that you would do such a thing" TC yelled in his normal voice "I did not have sex with him! Technically, we did sleep together, but I told him there were two requirements to get into my pants: first he had to buy my dinner and make it a proper first date and second, he had to show me that I wasn't just an experiment, I am looking for a relationship, not just a casual hook-up, so if he was wanting anything he had to show he's serious about me first." TC replied "...and see, you use to be so easy to get into the sack" "'Used to', being the key word. Like Brooks said, I have some class. Oh hang on, I'm vibrating" I said pulling out my phone "Hold on guys, I'll be back in a second". Walking away I answer my phone; "Hello... yes... yes we are... beside the park by my apartment ... OK I'll see you in a second." Going back to the table I but my phone back into my pocket and took my seat again. The two of them are talking about what show we should see tonight. "What's the new one that's still in previews? I saw the add for it the other day, it was something pink" Brooks said "Oh that helps, what show on Broadway doesn't have something pink in it? Um, let's think... nothing! Besides, the only reason you remembered `something pink' is because it's the vast majority of your wardrobe" stated TC bluntly. "I don't think I'm going to join you both tonight, I think I have other plans" I interrupted. "What do you mean; tonight is our first night off on the same day in over two months! We've been planning on spending it together for the past two weeks. You can't back out for any reason" cried TC. You see, unlike me, TC has never really been that great at auditions so instead of getting an acting job, he just started working at a restaurant in the Village. We used always to be able to spend one day a week together, but due to people quitting at work recently, he's kind of had to take a few extra shifts. Brooks and I usually go to see him one of those nights, but we don't get to have the conversations and what not that we like. So, needless to say, today was planned for a while and we all really needed the time together. I was having withdrawals from my long-time best friend. "Well, I know we need the time together, but Kyle said that he was only going to be in town `til Wednesday, so I want to spend at least the time until then with him. I don't know if he'll want to go see another show tonight or, I'm sorry to say," I take a deep breath and reluctantly say "even to be around you two. I don't know that he's ready to face you guys" "Please, I'm not ready for him! You make him almost sound like a god, he's not that great is he?" Brooks asked "Well maybe not, no, but I can let you take me for a spin later and you can find out" said a voice so perfect even angels would stop and listen. With no more introduction than that, Kyle pulled up a chair and sat beside me. He looked perfect wearing a pair of pinstripe pants with a white button-up that clung to his chest. TC and Brooks looked like they had died. "Kyle, glad you decided to join us. You maybe remember TC, he's been my best friend since high school? ...and this is Brooks, he's my vocal coach and second best friend. Guys this is Kyle." I said "Well, Kyle what are your plans tonight?" said TC recovering his poise "We were talking about going to a new show, but Scott wasn't sure you'd be up for it. He seems to think that seeing him so many times on stage will make you feel weird watching a show that doesn't involve him dancing shirtless, or in hot-pants." "Oh shut up, I do not. I was just thinking that maybe you had seen enough of them." I interrupted "No, it sounds fine, besides I owe him dinner anyways." Kyle continued "By the way, I called someone on the way here that I haven't talked to since I graduated, asked her opinion on where to take you. She suggested somewhere off Christopher Street, a little Italian place called Via Della Pace. Have you ever heard of it?" "Aww, I haven't been there in years. I remember the first time I went too, it was so much fun, they had jazz music downstairs. I went with Amy on Thanksgiving our freshman year of college; her parents didn't want to send her home so I came up to see her. She got so drunk on the wine too. Wait, who did you call that told you to go there?" I asked. "Well, you're not the only one who knows people. I called Amy; she's in LA this month visiting her aunt and uncle. I called her brother and got her number; I told her what I was doing and she told me the entire story about how you had to sneek her past the guard at the front door of her building. Then you baked her cookies, and took her to a bar." Kyle said slyly. "How do you know Amy? ...and how is she? I haven't talked to her since she was home over Christmas." "Amy and I had Spanish together in high school; she was my partner in our final projects for the class. She's good, busy but good. Told me to tell you `Hi' and that she misses and loves you. Does that mean I have some competition?" "Not unless she has grown a penis, but then she would really be a he" smirked TC, causing me to give him a look of pain. "Well listen, the plan seems to be that you are going to join us at the show tonight after your dinner together and I had better go home and inform the press of what's happening, so they can show up to take your pictures." "Shut-up" I laughed "Brooks have you figured out what show it is yet?" "Yep, it's `All Shook Up' that new show based on Elvis's music." "Great, in which case you get to meet Matt, he's been telling me about the show. I think you'll all like it. Although I can't remember what his character's name is" I said. "Do I even want to know who Matt is?" asked Kyle. "He's a friend, we took an acting class together a while back and just know each other from that. We don't hang out that much and maybe talk to each other, like, once in a blue moon." "Ok, I was about to get a little scared" Kyle said "No, I never dated him, I think you'll like him, he's a funny guy to be around... and the show's even better. Brooks are you taking care of the tickets?" "I can if you want me to, same seats as usual right?" "If we can please, it may be too late to get them so if you have a problem, give me a call on the cell I can try making a few calls myself, ok?" "Don't you just love how they take care of everything" said TC, "I think it sends them on a power trip sometimes." Kyle laughed, "I think it's sexy, a man who knows what he wants, and just how to get it". "No, it's more like I hate sitting behind someone where I can't see the show. That's what bothers me" I said "Right, well babe, I'm going home for a bit to get ready and call Sean" said TC. "He's gone home to see his mom this week and I want to know how badly they're beating each other up! I'll see you all before the show." "Ok, see ya later tonight. Tell Sean I said hey" I called to TC as he walked out the door. "I'm going too, you both have fun" Brooks said, "Kyle, it was nice meeting you. Scott, be careful!" Giving me a stern look as he too headed for the exit. "I will," I called "you just take care of the reservations and call me if there's a problem, ok?" Waiting till the door to shut before speaking, Kyle faced me. "Well, that was a little interesting; I wasn't expecting to see so many people I went to school with all in one sitting. You want to walk me to my hotel so I can change? Then we could go back to yours and let you get ready too." "Sounds good, but I was thinking, if you're booked at your hotel till Wednesday," glancing at my watch "it's still early enough that you could check out now. Stay with me again tonight, it will save you from having to pay for the room one night at least." "Um, are you comfortable with that? I don't want to intrude." He said "If its ok, I will." He quickly added. "Perhaps you could pack for me while I get ready, if you don't mind?" "Fine, I can do that, did you want a coffee before we leave?" "No I'm ok; I'm not really that much of a coffee person" So, out the door we went, heading for the subway to get a train to his hotel. Too many things were going through my head to even attempt a conversation right then. We had been on the subway a few minutes when he looked at me and asked, "Is everything alright? You haven't said a word since we left the coffee shop." "I'm fine, just thinking about stuff. I do that sometimes, mostly when something good happens, trying to stay grounded and not get carried away. I was thinking about home. It may be 12 hours and some years away, but I still miss the little things of home; I miss going to the high school and talking to teachers; seeing a show at the theatre downtown; going out to eat at three in the morning! I miss going to the bar on Saturday nights with TC and Brooks. This city has things that fill the void, but it's not the same. I was thinking that I need to go back. I haven't been home since Christmas, and even then it was only for three days, so what with the festivities I hardly got to do anything." "You have your life here; I guess you can't just drop it, even for a short while. I'd so love to take you home with me, but it wouldn't be right, you need to be here, you belong here. If anyone from our town deserved to get out of there, it was you." "Here's something I bet you don't know... I went to see you in three shows back home. The first was in my junior year, although at that time I didn't even know you, but I knew someone else in the cast and went to see them. You stood out a mile from the rest of the cast – in a good way!" Kyle's eye's sparkled at me as he continued "I remember thinking to myself then that you wouldn't be stopping around there for long. The second time was because of your friend, you remember the one that came into the guidance office that day?" I nodded that I did "Well, she started talking to me, telling me about a show she was in with some friends, she invited me along, but I kind of put her off. Then walking to my car that afternoon, I saw you and her walking together to yours, which was parked directly in front of mine, AGAIN! I noticed a poster for the show in your rear window and decided then that I would go along after all, but before the show finished, I snuck out, so you wouldn't know I'd been there." I shook my head in quiet amazement as Kyle went on. "The third was your senior show. I came home especially from school that weekend. I'd spoken with my brother on the `phone on the Friday and he mentioned he'd seen the show at school that day. I asked if there were any other times to see it and he said there was one more the next day so, I came home to see it. Once again, I couldn't get over how good you were! That was the first time I'd heard you sing, I was blown away. If I had not figured it out by then, that would of made it clear; you really didn't deserve to be in that small town, it could never hold you. That's why you are here, and don't need to go back there" I was speechless, never before had I heard someone tell me something so meaningful; I just sat there looking at him the entire time he spoke. When he finished, I sat there for a few moments, then grabbed his hand and leaned my head on his shoulder. It was the right moment, I needed him near me, and it was all I could do to thank him for making me feel better. The train began to slow down and Kyle stood up. Turning, he looked down at me, held his hand out toward me, smiled his beautiful smile and asked "...are you coming?" We walked out of the subway doors making our way to Times Square. As we strolled through the bustling street I looked at him and at that moment I realized; he was the first person I had ever held hands with in New York. I'd not been with a single guy since moving up here and Kyle was the only man I had kissed in months. The realization halted me in my tracks, and still holding his hand, Kyle was jerked back when I stopped moving. I pulled him close and said, "I want to thank you for coming up here and telling me how you feel. You've made me realize that my feelings for you are as strong as the last day that I saw you. You've made me happier today than I've been since I don't know when, and for that alone I can't thank you enough, but maybe this will help..." At that moment, I pulled him even closer and kissed him. Lightly and tenderly but still the most passionate kiss I had ever given. It felt like one of those movie moments, where time freezes, all is silent, the camera pans around you and the room begins to spin. An infinity later the people around you start to move again, but you could not be happier. When we broke from our kiss, I had to smile, just a bit; he looked at me and smiled back then asked what I was smiling about. I swear it was by far the funniest moment I have ever experienced. A group of tourist was standing there taking a picture of us kissing. At first, I was a little freaked out, Kyle smiled even bigger asked them to take one of us again, told me to smile and a flash went off, then he gave them his e-mail address so they could send him a copy of the pictures. "Now I can at least have a memory of this trip," he said, as we walked away toward his hotel, still holding hands. He wasn't kidding when he said it was kind of shitty with paint pealing off the walls and a filthy floor and that was just the lobby. I walked over to the front desk and told them he would be checking out early, we were going to collect his things and then be gone, so we were going to need to close out his bill. The lady did so, and we went to his room to pack. Kyle wanted to take a shower before we left for dinner, but looking around the room it was quite a simple answer for me ,"No way, you can shower at my place; I think the bugs will be ok with it." He just smiled and we finished packing him up. When we got to my apartment I checked my machine, there were two messages. One was from a friend back home telling me that I needed to call her, it was important. The other was from the theatre, we were having a cast change this week and everyone was to report at noon the next day for new pictures and video for our advertisements. I sat down at my desk and started going through my address book, looking for the number to call my friend back home. I told Kyle that if he wanted to could go ahead and take a shower; I had a few things to take care of first. He seemed down about that, but still headed over towards the bathroom. I picked up my cell phone and dialed the number; it rang twice before anyone picked up. "Hello" said the voice on the other end. "Hey, this is Scott, I'm looking for Katelyn, she called me earlier and left me a message, I was wondering if I could speak with her?" I said "Yeah hang on a second, I'll get her. KATELYN, SCOTT'S ON THE PHONE FOR YOU!" the voice yelled. That's one of my pet peeves when you call someone and they deafen you shouting for the person you want to talk to. "Hey Scott, glad you called me back listen I got two things to say to you, before I say either of them, I need you to be sitting down." Katelyn said so fast I could hardly understand her. "OK, well I'm already sitting down, so what's up" "First, the good news, I heard from a friend that someone finally came out of the closet, and I thought that you should know." "I'm twelve hours away from home and you want to tell me about someone coming out of the closet, wow. Um, ok who?" not that I don't so think I know where this was going. "Kyle Mason. His brother is like best friends with my brother Ken, and Kyle's brother told him yesterday, but now Kyle seams to have disappeared from everyone, I mean his entire family doesn't know where he went, he just told them he was going away for a while to think about some stuff, but he told his brother he was gay, and was going to find someone to tell them." "I know he's gay, in fact he's kind of taking a shower in my bathroom at the moment, so I'll tell him you heard this and then I'll have him call his family. Ok what is the second thing?" "Well, my dad said he went to the hospital yesterday to visit your dad, it seems he had a heart attack Friday night. Dad told me to call and tell you, just to make sure that you knew, I'm guessing that you've heard, but wasn't sure." "No, I haven't heard from my family in around 3 weeks, my cousin usually calls me and keeps me up to date on that stuff, but so far I haven't heard from her yet. I'll call her and see what's going on, Thanks Kate. I appreciate it." "No prob. Hey, be careful and be smart you never know what Kyle might have gotten into. And I want to hear all the juicy details sometime, if you come down we'd better hang out. Ok" "Ok, hey thanks for keeping me posted, tell your dad I said thanks and tell your brother Happy Birthday, I know its coming up in about a week." "Wait a minute how did you remember that, you're like the worst person on remembering dates like that." "Kate, he and I have the same birthday, only he's two years younger than me, that's how." "Right, ok, I'll tell him then." "Thanks, I have to go now, Kyle is just getting out of the shower and we're going to dinner here in a bit. Call me sometime soon and we can catch up, or if you want you can call and we can set up a time for you and your brother to visit, maybe on our birthday, then you could come and see the show too. Ok, I'll talk to you later." Just as I hung up the phone Kyle walked into the room. I have to say, I really think that the time I never got to see him for the past 10 years made him hotter. He stood there with a towel hanging on his waist as he walked over to his bag, his hair still wet and with a slight curl. His chest and abs glistened in the light from the traces of water left over on his skin from the shower. Maybe it was just a wrinkle in the towel, but it looked like he was packing even more than I thought for all those years. He turned around to open his bag, which was sitting on the chair in the living room, the towel clinging across his backside really left nothing to the imagination his butt looked so perfect. I stood up and walked over to him, sliding my arms around his waist and taking him by surprise into my arms. "Thank-you for being here, and at least telling me how you feel, it gives me some comfort that I know I can love you now, and have you love me in return" I said. "That's all I need, just to know that you love me" he said turning around to face me, "I used to lay in bed at night when I was in college or in the military, and wonder just what you were doing, mostly I would wonder if you were safe, but sometimes I would wonder if you ever thought about me like I did you." His blue eyes locked into mine, staring back at me. Holding him closer too me I said "Actually, when you first left I often did. Then as time past, I slowly realized that you were not going to talk to me, I kept your screen name for many years just in case I ever wanted to try and tell you something, mostly it was just to see what you were doing. As the years went by I got over that, it did take some time, but I stopped checking your profile all together. I finally had realized that we were two different people that were maybe never meant for each other. Seeing you now brings back so many feelings and memories, I have to do something." "Oh, really and just what might that be?" he asked I slowly moved closer to him, leaning in to kiss him. When I was barely an inch away from his lips all I said was "this." Stopping there I saw a look in his eyes not of fear but of trust. As our lips met for the second time that day, I felt complete. Everything in my life was where I wanted it to be, I had the job of my dreams, I was living near my two best friends in New York City, and now I seemed to be dating the man of my dreams from so many years ago. We broke from our kiss, and I looked back into his loving, trusting, blue eyes. "Oh, before I forget, Katelyn said your brother told her brother that you were gay, and that your entire family was worried about you because you haven't talked to them in nearly a week. I told her I would have you call them. So would you, please? I am going to have to be at the theatre tomorrow and ask for the rest of the week off, I think I'm going home with you till Saturday. Then I will come back and finish out the weekend." "Any special reason, or do you just want to spend that much more time with me?" he asked. "As much as I'd like to discuss this whole story now, I think I need to get ready `cause its four thirty and the show starts at 8, and if you want me to look decent I need to get ready, we can talk about it over dinner, that much you owe me." "Well then, get going `cause decent isn't going to impress me tonight, and we also have to make a good impression on the other two for the evening." Kyle said, smiling all the while. I turned and began walking towards the bathroom, turning around at the door I see that he has turned his back to me again, and taken the towel off, and was getting ready to put on his underwear (they were boxer-briefs if you must know), I had a cheap shot and I knew I had to take it. "Hey Kyle, has anyone ever told you that you had a cute butt? Not that I care, but are you a top or a bottom?" "Can you just get ready so we can leave, I am trying to take you out to dinner and all you want to do is flirt with me, Go!" ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ When I first started writing this chapter I wanted it to end later than it did, but after I got to a certain length I had to start a new one.
