TO BE A BROTHER by Macout Mann Chapter XVI A Newer and Bigger Hotel The following June 1, Jim joined the staff of the hotel. In the process of convincing Brownlee to come out of retirement, he had had to be told about the controversy. He had said that the Brothers activity was what he had suspected. But he was the kind of hotel man who didn't care what was going on, so long as there was no mayhem. He was pleasantly surprised to find Jim to be competent, personable, and willing to learn. They bonded immediately. Brownlee pointed out that it was traditional in such circumstances that the assistant manager or some member of management reside at the hotel in order to deal with crises that might arise at all hours. He nominated Jim, whose official title was Manager of Guest Relations. His room and board would become part of his compensation. Jim enthusiastically accepted the arrangement, and chose Room 1201 as his permanent abode. By the date of the Libra Convocation, several guest room floors had been renovated. There were four types: rooms with two double beds, rooms with two queen beds, rooms with one queen bed, and rooms with a single king. All the rooms featured furniture styles "of the period," and all the occasional chairs were now upholstered. The drapes were of the same quality as those in the lobby. And the rack rate was at least twice what the same room had gone for before renovation. The main entrance was surmounted by an elegant new marquee with the name, Olympia Plaza, in stylish sans-serif lettering. To the delight of all the Stockholder/Brothers, the remake was proving extremely popular with the public. Both the guest rooms and the new dining room were very profitable. It seemed that the Pirie loan would be repaid in record time. When Steve arrived at the convocation, he announced that his parents were divorcing. His mother had discovered that his dad was shacking up with a gal he worked with. "Praise god," Steve told everyone, "I can get out of this holier-than-thou fucking prison that calls itself a school." Reg was there, and he couldn't wait to get with Steve first off. Peter had told Steve about Reg, so Steve was more than anxious to be taken to Room 1219. "You're pretty hot for an old dude," Steve teased. "You're only as old as you feel," Reg said, "and I plan to feel like a teenager forever." Steve reached for Reg's dick. "This feels like a teenager's. How about I suck it for you." A majority, however, seemed to think that it would be better to let the fact be known through word of mouth. After all, the Brothers had never used the term "gay" in referring to themselves. Many of them were bi. And although straights generally didn't seek out "gay friendly" lists, there was no reason to risk controversy by having the hotel come to be known that way. The group did unanimously agree to favor employing workers who were of "the liberal persuasion." A year later, the Brothers were confronted with a completely renovated penthouse. The dining room featured a deep blue ceiling lit to resemble a starry sky. The lounge reflected the French influence of the rest of the hotel's décor, but it had a very masculine tone. It was perfect. And the area was proving to be a very popular venue. It had been booked solid since the work was completed. Spencer King had become a brother back when Malcolm was Elder. He had been a supporter from the time the Brothers had become the underwriters of the group and was a stockholder in the hotel, but he had never attended a convocation. He also headed a well-known venture capital firm and was one of the wealthier sustainers. He checked in to the hotel a day before the 2021 Libra Convocation convened, and sought an appointment with Jim. Jim's mezzanine office was not the most opulent. But he welcomed his guest and told him that the hotel was delighted to have him as a guest, especially since he was a Brother and a sustainer. "I'm glad to be back," Spencer said. "You know, I married my wife when I was still an active brother. From my thirties, I devoted myself to her. Only recently have I had the desire to be with....well again to be with somebody like you. Could I?" "Unless there's a management problem, I should be in my room by 5:30. Give me a ring at 1201. If I'm there you're welcome to come up." "There's some business I want to talk about, too, but that can wait," Spencer added. It was 5:35 when Jim's phone rang. At 5:40 he welcomed Spencer into his room. It had a well- stocked bar, so the cocktail hour was soon begun. Spencer was still a handsome man. Jim thought his greying temples made him more so. "I hadn't fucked or been fucked by a man in twenty years," Spencer admitted. "But I suppose it's like they say. If you're `that way,' as you get older, men appeal to you more and more. I had a chance encounter last Spring. I need your dick, Jim." Both men were fully dressed, Jim less so than Spencer, since he always went commando. But Jim stood and embraced the older man and removed his tie first. "Let's get more comfortable then," he said. In minutes propriety was resolved into licentiousness. Since you renovated the Olympia Plaza, it has been very successful, but it has only 240 rooms. It has no grand ballroom, actually no meeting space for more than a hundred people. We believe that if you more than double the number of rooms and add more amenities, the Olympia Plaza, like the Waldorf in New York, could become one of the nation's most elegant convention hotels as well as one of the country's most fashionable places for the affluent to stay." "All well and good to dream about," Jim interjected, "but you must know that 100% of the hotel's profits are committed to retiring our debt to the Piries. We have no equity to invest or to pledge." "Quite so," Spencer replied, "but being clever venture capitalists we have overcome that problem. "We propose to become joint owners. Olympia Plaza, Inc. would authorize a Class B stock. We don't often talk about par value these days, but I'm sure you studied about it at McCormick." "Yes...like we studied that the purpose of a corporation was to create the greatest profit over the longest period of time. But we don't talk about that these days either. Everybody's only interested in the current quarter's performance." "Well, if you're interested in the long term, that's the genius of our plan. Initially, there would be an equal number of Class A and Class B shares. The Class B shares would be assigned a par value equal to the cost of the new construction divided by the number of Class B shares. "Our analysis indicates that you should pay off your current debt in nine years. Once the expansion is completed--we figure in twenty to twenty-four months--the debt should be paid off in less than half the time. Once that is done, the corporation can be free to buy up the Class B shares. The purchase price will be par value plus the amount that corporate equity has increased since the creation of Class B stock, divided by the number of Class B shares still outstanding." "But that's not fair to the Class A stockholders," Jim interrupted. "Class B stockholders will get twice their share of the profits." "Quite so," Spencer said. "Our venture capital company will own all of the Class B stock, and so we'll get our return on our investment in building your hotel, when you buy back our stock. Hardly an excessive gain, I might add." "Well, when you put it that way...." Jim laughed. "In the meantime," Spencer continued, "any decisions made at annual meetings would have to be agreed to by a majority of both Classes of stockholders, and Class B stockholders would be given seats on the board in proportion to their ownership." "That sounds reasonable," Jim said. "But this is mighty complicated. Why don't you just offer to buy the hotel from us?" "You can't think of a reason you wouldn't sell?" Spencer asked. Jim thought for a few seconds. "Of course. As venture capitalists you would likely sell it as soon as you could make a profit, and that would leave the Brothers where they were before we bought it in the first place." "Quite so." Jim hadn't realized it, but he had been tested. Not only for his recognition of the Brothers' abiding interest in always maintaining a controlling interest in the hotel, but for his ability to recognize the important issues when faced with a business proposal. He had passed both tests. Jim agreed to talk about the proposal privately to each of the directors the next day. He also suggested that since Spencer liked them young and tender, he seek out Peter Farrar for sex at the convocation. Two days later, at the meeting of stockholders, Spencer King's proposal was accepted, and Jim Sessions was elected Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Olympia Plaza, Inc. Pretty good for a twenty-five year old. It also made him both the employer and an employee of Preston Brownlee, which was not as odd as it might seem, since it was Brownlee's idea. He felt that Jim was almost ready to assume control. For the three days of the convocation, however, it was Jim's dick that was in control.
