He handed the note to Lucas. He read it. He actually chuckled. "You are right, fucking son of a bitch. OK, repeat after me, 'don't panic, sit, be calm and look at the actions that can be taken and chose the simplest to start with'." Robert started to laugh. "Lucas, you have changed over the last months. I enjoy you more every day." He looked around and gave him a kiss and a hug. "Let's go and have some supper and figure this one out." They did and they came to a decision very quickly. Their life would change but then Robert had commented that life was a constant change and they just hoped that they could guide the change a bit. But Robert did add to the delight of his partner. "Why the fuck did it have to happen now? Fucking son of a bitch, I would like to get my hands on this fucker." They left the restaurant laughing at Robert's outburst. It felt good. Present "Luckily we have our first meeting with Coach this afternoon. The agenda is going to change a bit. I hope he is OK with our plan." "Well if he isn't, there are only a couple of options left for us." "Right, we went over them fairly thoroughly last night. OK, we have a lot to do. I have to go over to the computer building and do some work on that new project. Meet you for lunch?" They named a place and Robert was off. They both got a lot done. In some moments that he freed his mind from computing projects, Robert had decided how he would handle the meeting with Coach. He didn't want to get into a discussion with Lucas about it so they just joked and had fun at lunch. He needed to go back and tie up some loose ends and so he took some other work with him for when he was finished. They agreed to meet Coach at his office at 3:30. Robert finished up around 3 and decided on a quiet walk. It was sunny but a crisp day but that didn't bother him. He was wrapped up with what he would say on Monday to the team. He knew that they should be honest but perhaps be a bit flippant about it. Coach's welcome was warm. They chatted about the weekend. Robert decided that it was time. He got out his file folder that he had for these meetings. In it was the note. "Coach before we start, I, we have something that we have to discuss first. It was my fault, not Lucas'. I am going to give you something that I found in my locker after our workout yesterday. The note is correct but I stress that it was my forgetfulness, bad judgement, call it what you will but we have to deal with it." He handed the note to Coach. He read it twice. "So you say that you found this after a workout and shower yesterday." They nodded yes. "Then they either followed you or they know your routine. It sounds like it could be someone on the team. You aren't that well know around campus." They shrugged their shoulders and muttered that coach was correct. Coach looked at them and smiled. "First, you did nothing wrong. You can dance where you want with whom you want. At eleven at night after a night together dancing, a kiss is the least of anyone's worries." He paused. "If I know you guys, you have a solution." "You may not like them." "Them? I won't know until I hear them." "We could resign as co-captains." "No ... way!" "Thanks Coach. We want to take the ammunition away from the guy who wrote the note." "Coach those aren't the words he used yesterday." Coach gave a look of tell him more. "The sender was a fucking, son of a bitch and I think I quote my partner." Coach broke out into laughter. "You two break me up." Robert was back on message. "We are going to out ourselves to the team tomorrow and tell them why we are doing it. Coach, I know it is no ones business about our private lives but I am not ashamed, neither is my partner. Damn it, this is the 21st century in Canada. How many years has gay marriage been legal? Well since 2004- 5. Go figure. It will mean that we won't have to watch our actions or things that we say any more. We can be normal people. If we don't come out, whoever did this will start rumours and that will just be worse. We shall try to make it light when we do it." Coach listened carefully and they had a discussion about a lot of options. It did come back to the one they suggested. They finally agreed on the course of action and got down to Coach's original agenda. They accomplished a lot and all three felt that it had been a good meeting. They did phone Paul and asked him and Brett over for a few minutes telling them that they had something they needed to hear. They all laughed when Brett's reaction was 'that son of a bitch'. When they all looked at him surprised, he told them that was just normal talk around his home. Yet another view into Brett's life and world. They let Paul know that they did not expect or want any other kind of support from him. Monday passed quickly and they were walking towards to the arena. Robert blew air out his mouth. "You ready for this?" "We both know that this going to change our lives but you were right. Whoever wrote this will just start rumours. Get it over with and get on with our lives. We'll find out who our friends are. Maybe very few in number." "Well my Dad went through this years ago. He was outed by a guy in the locker room. He eventually became team captain the next year and for the rest of the years at university. We should be so lucky to keep the position next year." They had decided to do it after the workout. They both decided to act no differently during the workout; they were the co-captains. They worked the guys hard and everyone was right with them. They were back in the locker room. He stood up. "Guys I have something to tell you. Something that I did, my stupidity. I am going to read you a note I found in my locker after a run and workout on Saturday afternoon." He pulled out the note and read it slowly. "So the captains of the hockey team like to dance together and then kiss outside the gay dance club." He paused looking at every guy in the room. "The first part of the note is correct. We had a night of dancing and I did kiss the other co-captain. The dancing was great but the kiss was, ah, so so." As they planned it, Lucas interrupted. "Hold it. The kiss was only so, so? That's not how I remember it. It was hot." Preening himself, "And so was I." "Phff, if you say so." Lucas gave a look of total surprise. "Your are in big trouble later." He looked at the guys and raised his eyebrows suggestively. By then, there were ripples of laughter in the locker room. They heard someone shout out that this was the Lucas and Robert comedy show. "Unfortunately there is more to the note which is a little more serious." He looked down at the note. "If you want this little dark secret kept that way, you will follow my instructions next time I leave a note. Hope you enjoyed your night. It is going to cost you." There were gasps and boos around the room. "Thanks guys. We have decided to do this today because we have no intention of living under a threat like this. Who ever wrote this, will only start rumours when we don't agree to the demands. Guys, I am not proud that I am gay and I am not ashamed that I am gay. I just am. It was only this fall that I met someone who is pretty terrific." He smiled. Lucas stepped out. "Guys, I have known that I was gay for all of high school. I was caught by my parents last year and have had some problems with my mother not accepting it. This guy has helped me through it and we are finally starting to get my family on side. I feel the same as Robert does. I am who I am." Someone yelled out. "Truth now. Is he a good kisser?" Robert turned and looked at his guy and smiled. "The best." There were more hoots and funny comments. "Guys that's it. That's all. We have a practice and game to win tomorrow. Let's get to it. Thanks for listening." Unlike his Dad, Jeremy's experience years ago (Unexpected Five Years On, 1), they both had a lot of pats on the back and encouraging comments. Robert had watched the team carefully as he had spoken and he had kept his peripheral vision on Hank and his friends. He was sure that he had seen a couple of very small looks between them. He was certain that he saw a look of dislike and frustration flash across Hank's face. He wondered if they were the ones. He also wondered if they would try something else now that Lucas and he had done what they had done. His mind went through a lot of possibilities: Lucas' car, vandalism that might cause bad press for them and the team. They knew where they lived. Easy access. He would have to think this through. Shit nothing was ever easy, he thought. The time on the ice was the usual. The coach had them practice all the game winning strategies that he drilled into them before every game. On the way home, Robert stopped in the pathway. "I have a gut feeling that this is not going to end easily. This may be part revenge and part hate crime. I am trying to figure out what their next move might be. I'll pay but I want you to park your car in a long term parking lot until we need it. Get it out of the residence lot. It is too easily a target there. I think that they will try something dramatic that will cause problems for us and maybe the team. I know I see the look in your eyes. Try to think of the most logical and basically easy thing they could do." They had to force themselves to work and luckily both were focused enough to do it. They were getting ready for bed, when Lucas stopped in his tracks, "Spray cans of paint, entrance to the residence or more likely our door and the wall outside our room. Easy to do get in and out quickly. A lot of traffic in the day so early morning or more likely late night. Good fodder for the local paper. Lots of bad publicity. Sit back and smirk." "Brilliant. I once had an English teacher explain the concept of stream of consciousness writing in a novel. You just did it and came up with brilliant insights." Robert too was thinking quickly. Robert turned on his computer and in seconds he had the names of stores in town that sold miniature surveillance cameras. They searched through a couple of pages of pictures and prices. "OK a list of what we need. Let's make a list of features." He opened the note app and they started the list which became longer and longer and probably more expensive: wireless, small, hard to see, battery operated, motion detection for on and off, easy to install quickly, good quality video pictures, easy to monitor, a large memory, colour to blend in with the background. They were excited. They would take an hour off Wednesday to buy and install it later in the day. In one respect, they hoped that the culprits were team members because they would be at the game with them on Tuesday so Wednesday would be soon enough. If not, then they would have to deal with it. They tied their game on Tuesday after a hard fought match and Coach was pleased with how they played. The guys made some notes in their file of teams and team members as his dad did. They had already made notes from memory of the teams that they had played since the beginning of the season. They actually had fun at the electronics store as they managed to have a very knowledgeable sales person. The cost was slightly more than they expected; Lucas insisted on paying half. They left his car in a parking garage close to the university. They were feeling better as nothing had happened while they were away for their game. They worked hard after practice on Wednesday. From what they could see, nothing on the team had changed. Everyone was acting as they always did. They worked really hard first on their assignments and then later in the evening when they took a break to figured out where and how to hide the device. They thanked the architect for the drop down ceiling with moveable sound tiles. They made the installation with no problems of residents interrupting their work. When they were finished, the camera was almost impossible to see unless you were really looking for one. It only activated when there was movement eight metres from the device and the device was silent and had no noticeable lights when it turned on. They went to bed feeling a bit better. They were prepared for the eventuality that nothing might happen in the residence and it might happen elsewhere in a different way. The device had an app which they downloaded onto their tablet. When they tested it with Robert walking down the corridor, the app opened, made a very quiet noise in their room to alert them and showed a very good image of Robert right until he stopped at the door. They could see him at the door and they had a view of the wall to the right and a bit of the wall to left of the door. They had placed the device on the left side figuring that would give a better image of someone at the door which had the handle on the left side. Lucas was in a frisky mood. Showing him the images from the test, "I wish all our enemies or friends were as handsome as this guy walking down the hall. Good enough to eat! I want to give him one of the best kisses that the team was told about. Look at the picture. Oh shit, you are one sexy hunk. Come here." One kiss led to another which led to naked guys. If truth be told, it would have been difficult to say who was the sexier one. Two big men, in incredible shape, sculpted from workouts and runs. The two lost themselves in each other. It was as if all the pent up worry and planing suddenly escaped from them and they could just lose themselves in each other completely. Robert pulled away and scanned his guy's body. "That was the best kiss. Look at your body. I want to lie on our bed, spread out and touch each other." With an evil grin, "Then I want it hard and nasty." That is exactly what they did. They finished breathless and covered in each others finish. They surveyed each other and then licked themselves clean. Thursday and Friday passed without incident. They had a pub night on Friday. Nothing seemed changed. No one was going out of the way to avoid them. They talked and laughed about courses and the females in the pub. They didn't bother dancing that night. I was the first time that they didn't feel the need to dance with a female. They did decide that dancing together was not the best idea. Paul and Brett had a lot of work that weekend and they had decided that dinner and dancing was out for this week. So they had a quick walk around campus after supper and came back to their room on Saturday evening. Later, they were lying close to each other in bed reading; it felt great. They were really liking the beds together. Just after 11:30, the tablet beside Lucas came alive. Someone was coming down the hall. It was not the first time that it had happened that night but it was getting late. This was the first movement down the hall in half an hour. Lucas took a look as he had done earlier. He quickly tapped Robert's shoulder and used his finger to indicate silence. The two figures had on caps. They were walking fairly quickly. They came to their door and the first guy looked up to check the room number. It was Hank Preston. They saw them pull out spray cans from their jackets. They watched mesmerized as they started to spray the wall and the door. They had rehearsed what they would do. The walked silently to the door and on a signal threw it open. As they leaped forward, they could smell the wet paint. Robert grabbed Hank. The other guy had been painting the wall with the word 'fags' and Lucas caught up to him halfway down the hall. They had made certain that they made a lot of noise. Doors started to open and neighbours were coming into the hall. Robert yelled "Vandalism, call the campus police." Neither wanted to move their captives as they had them pinned down with their bodies and Robert had Hank's arm up his back and he was putting pressure on it. At one point, he had whispered that he would break the fucking thing if so much as moved. Campus police arrived very quickly. They soon had plastic ties on Preston and his buddy Jason McMullen from the team. Both guys had small amounts of spray paint on their fingers. Robert took one of the officers into their room and showed him the footage. The officer was impressed. He told the story quickly, especially how they wondered if and what might happen after they told the team their orientation. He described what they did and added that they had bought some solvents just in case to dissolve anything if something happened. The officers took out a camera and took pictures including one that showed the room number. They said it was OK to take it off the door but they wanted it left on the wall which had a very low gloss finish and it would be difficult to erase it. The door was soon cleaned up totally. Their room smelled of solvent for hours even after they had disposed of everything in the garbage outside the residence. They didn't get a lot of sleep but they finally did sleep. They woke up the next morning and they started to phone. First Coach and they set a meeting time with him for 3 to look at what would happen. Then to their fathers. Finally they visited the office of the campus police. They asked to keep this as quiet as possible because if the word got around, it would totally disrupt their lives. They asked if city police had been notified and the campus police said that with cases like this, they didn't have to inform city police. Both guys left no doubt that they wanted it to stay with the campus force. Then they asked what the repercussions could be for the two guys. Robert became visibly upset at how severe the punishments could be. They almost ran to their room and Robert was on the phone instantly to his father. "Papa, we are just back from the campus police. I am so upset for the guys who did this. I had no idea how severe the university can be on situations like this. I don't want them expelled. I don't want them kicked off the team. I think that Hank's scholarship depends on playing hockey. I guess I didn't think this through; I just acted on instinct not with my brain. Is there anything that I can do?" "You just did it and you did the right thing. Your dad and I shall be there by supper time. You guys are invited to have dinner with us to ....?" "To sit calmly and not panic, look at the facts and come up with possible courses of action." He heard his father chuckling. "Robert, I know a couple of very highly placed peopled in the administration. Our firm has done some work for the university and I was the lead on a couple of the cases. I'll see if I can make some calls today. Do you think that this guy, what's his name, OK Hank Preston, would trust me to take his case before a board of review?" "Papa, we have a meeting with Coach this afternoon. We'll raise that question. I suspect Hank doesn't have a lot of family money. I am certain that he is on a hockey scholarship." "See you for dinner." "Call my cell. I don't know how long the meeting with Coach will go." Lucas gave him a hug and a kiss. "Now, we have a lot of work before 3. No more on this subject until we break for some lunch. On the way out, they knocked on all the doors of everyone on their floor asking them to not talk about the incident and everyone seemed sympathetic to their request and the reasons for it. They were a bit subdued and after lunch, they took their computers to the library and managed to put in a couple of hours of study. "Coach this is not how we wanted to continue meeting with you." "You certainly make my life interesting." Lucas with a smile, "Coach that is what this guy said to me a few weeks back." They explained how they felt about the consequences for the incident. The explained what they had done with the campus police and with people on their floor. "OK guys what do you want to see happening." "Coach right now it is what we don't want. We don't want them expelled and don't want them taken off the hockey team. I suspect that Hank doesn't have the money to continue if his scholarship is taken away. My father is making some enquiries today with some officials who he knows and both my parents are coming later today. As we talked about the situation, I wondered if Preston and McMullen can afford lawyers. My father is prepared to take them on once we have decided what to do." "Why would you do this?" "One, we are captains of the team. He is one of us. He did two damn, stupid things but Coach, this could ruin his entire academic life and perhaps his future. I don't think that is good for him. This is a place for learning and understanding. My father would like to meet him tomorrow and talk this over with him. He is a fair and just man." "Again, you guys impress me. OK let's get my agenda finished and then go and see if we can find Preston. I have his address." "You want us along?" "You have more to say than me. You know what you want to do and what you want me to do." After the meeting, they ended up in a very poor section of town. Lucas commented that they were right that he probably didn't have a lot of money. Coach rang the door bell. Coach introduced himself to the guy who answered the door who called for Hank to come to the door. They were surprised. He hadn't shaved. There were black circles under his eyes which were red. Hank only saw Coach to start with and told him how sorry he was. Then his eyes opened wide as he saw Lucas and Robert. Coach took over quickly. "The co-captains came with me. I can't believe it but hey want to talk and to help you and McMullen. Can we come in?" "There doesn't appear to be much to talk about. There will be a hearing and there isn't much that I can say." He looked as if he would start to cry. Robert stepped forward. "We would like to talk so let's get a couple of things out of the way. You did two damn, stupid things. I have talked to the campus police. There are a lot of things that the powers that be can do in a case like this. I want to help if I can. My father wants to help. I don't want you expelled from school and I don't want you thrown off the hockey team." "Why would you want to do that and how can your dad help me?" "Last question first. Can you afford a lawyer?" He shook his head. "Look at where I live. No I can't. So what?" "My dad is a senior partner in the best law firm in our city. He says that he will take your case pro bono and do everything he can to have you stay at the university and on the team. He has a really good record in court." "What is pro bono in English?" "He will do it for free." "Why?" "Coach can you answer that?" "I have met his father and he and Robert are very close. He will always help his son. If he says that he will help you because that is what his son wants, he will help you." Robert took over again. "He is coming into town in a couple of hours. He wants to see you tomorrow but first, he is going to see some of his contacts high up in the administration of the university. I am prepared to speak in your favour." "Why?" "One, I am a co-captain of the team and you are one of my teammates. It is my job. Two, I don't think that you should have your career hurt by these stupid actions. You didn't hurt anyone but you did do some damage to university property. There will be some penalties. My aim is to get it as simple as possible." "I made you out yourself to the whole team." Robert looked at Lucas. They had talked about this. Lucas nodded OK to Robert. "You know, we actually thank you for that. We can relax as we did at the pub on Friday because we don't have to pretend any more. By the way, my dad is an expert in same sex law and he has a really good record in court. Also as you may meet his other half, you should know that I have two dads. My other dad is coming with him. They have been married for 19 years. They still play football (soccer) in a league at home. My other dad runs and owns the accounting firm, The Accountants. He will support me as well." "I didn't know any of this and I don't know what to say." "I have a suggestion." Lucas interrupted him. "When he says those words, listen up." Robert rolled his eyes at Lucas. "Smart ass." That broke the tension and there was even a smile on Hank's face for the first time. "I am listening." "Meet my dad. I call him Papa and don't be surprised that we speak French to each other. I have been doing that since I was a kid. We aren't trying to say anything about you. Talk to him honestly and if you think that you want him to represent you, say thank you and let him get on with it." As they were going back to their room, the call came in. His dads were in town, signed in at the hotel and hungry. He gave them directions to the Vietnamese restaurant that they had enjoyed a couple of weeks before. They arrived first and stood up when the dads came in. Jeremy got to them first and Robert had a bone crushing hug. Timothy looked at his son with such love and whispered that he was so proud of him. Lucas got the same treatment. Just like his dads, nothing was said about why they were there. They ordered food and dug in. It was later that his dad started. "OK, tell me where we stand." "Did you contact anyone today." "Yes I got the head of the university on the phone and he is going to call the person who will take this case. I should have a call tonight. I have a strategy planned. Now what have you done. I can't imagine that you sat around and did not do anything." With a smile, Robert and Lucas filled them in on what they had done and said. There were a big smiles on Timothy's face and on Jeremy's. It was Jeremy who spoke. "Counsellor, I think that we have trained our son well." "I told him earlier that I am proud of him and will add that I am proud of his values." Lucas decided that he needed to say something. "Your son is amazing. He has thought everything through and has made logical jumps that are incredible." He lifted a hand and grabbed Robert's hand. The dads just smiled. They saw the looks that had passed between the two guys; they were the same looks as when Jeremy and Timothy were getting know each other. "Give me Hank's address and phone number. We had better look at the other guy McMullen too and put this together as a package. Let me deal with it. I am certain that you want to get back into a routine with your studies." "Thanks Papa, I have lectures and computer lab tomorrow that I cannot miss. Luckily the afternoon is free and I have some free time on Tuesday if I am needed." "Go get some sleep and we'll talk tomorrow." Breathing out heavily, "Sleep, I think that we have a couple of hours of work this evening before sleep." Hugs goodbye and they were soon walking down their hallway with 'fag' written on it. They closed their door and collapsed into each others arms. Lucas put his head back. "You have learned so much from your dads. I could see your Papa in you this afternoon when you took over." "You should see Dad when he gets going. They really are a pair. It is amazing how close they are, just like my grandparents. OK to work and then maybe some tension relief." A kiss from Lucas, "I like your priorities, especially the last one." A couple of hours later, Lucas heard a yawn, a book close and out of his peripheral vision, he saw a computer being turned off He saw Robert stand up and stretch his arms. Then Lucas felt hands on his shoulders and fingers begin to deeply message his shoulders. He closed his eyes and let his body relax. He heard the two words, 'tension relief'. He opened his eyes, stood up and turned around. He put his arms around Robert. "Thank for taking me into your life. I can't even imagine my life without you now." Robert leaned in and kissed him. No words just a loving look from Robert who started to take off Lucas' shirt. He loved the sight every time that he saw Lucas like this. When his own shirt was off, they pulled each other in and the kiss started. They both knew where their bed was and after a minute or more of the kiss, Robert bent his knees and let them slide back and fall on the bed. With their pants off, it was slow and very highly charged. It was as if, after the day that had had its ups and downs, they needed a sensual high to let the other know that they were there for each other, no matter what happened. They knew each others bodies so well. They were both so primed that by the time they came near the end, when they finally could hold back no longer, they started that final push to take them up the hill and over and what a incredible ride down the hill it was. They could feel the other finishing and they heard the words of passion. They woke the next morning still clinging to each other. Comments I have had some feedback from some readers who were trying to read some of my previous stories. If you go to Authors tab on Nifty and find my name, list alphabetically by first name, when you try to access Surprised Eric and Dave from my list of stories, it doesn't connect to anything. Surprised Graham and Robert is just not there in the list of stories. If you want to read them, use the date and category, Adult-Friends or Beginnings etc. and go the appropriate category and date and they are there and active. If you liked this story, you might want to read the others that I have published on Nifty. In particular, my first story, Unexpected Change which has had the most positive comments and one of my other favourites, What a Difference a Year Makes.
