The 7-year-old kicked the soccer ball to his left. "Now Mikey, pass to Timmy." The 6-year-old Mikey kicked the ball and it went scooting along the ground to Timmy, his best friend who was also 6 years old. "Great! Now Timmy, pass back to Jimmy for a shot on goal." Jimmy timed his kick well, struck the ball and sent it sailing toward the makeshift goal that had been set up in the back yard. Dave lunged for the ball with his arms spread wide making sure it went into the goal. He landed with a 'thud' completely stretched out on the ground in front of the goal. All three boys pounced on him as the laughter and giggling of young boys filled the back yard and the pile rolled around on the ground. After a few minutes Dave said the unwelcome words, "Game over. Time to go in and get cleaned up." "Oh no. Do we have to?" said Jimmy and Timmy in unison. "Yes. If you want me to read you a story before bedtime you had better get moving. Mikey, I'm glad you could join us. Look forward to seeing you next time." "Thanks, Uncle Dave. It sure was fun." Mikey lived next door and spent so much time with Jimmy and Timmy that people often mistook him for a third brother. It just seemed natural for him to call Dave "Uncle." The two brothers ran into the house, headed straight to the bathroom pulling clothes off as they went. As soon as Dave got the water temperature in the safe zone he nodded and the boys jumped in sending water everywhere. For Dave, bathing J and T was a waterlogging experience. Before long the boys were in their beds and Dave was reading the story they selected. After lights-out, Dave went back to the bathroom, cleaned up the mess that was always left behind, and picked up the boy's clothes. He wondered if they behaved like that with their parents or just with him. Dave spent the rest of the evening studying for a Math exam then watched ESPN for a while. Dave is 28 years old. He wanted to go to college after High School but his father died when he was 11 and his single mother barely earned enough to keep the two of them fed and clothed. Dave went into the Army and became a Ranger. A few years ago he left the Army and restarted his life in his old hometown. He found work in a lumberyard and enrolled in the local junior college. With the discipline he learned in the Army and the courses he was taking at JC, Dave quickly demonstrated a capacity to do much more and his boss moved him into the office handling special orders for contractors. The pay was good and soon he was able to buy his own house. Jack was Dave's best friend. They met when they were in Middle School and they had been close friends ever since. After high school Jack went to college. His father owned three grocery stores and there seemed to be plenty of money. When he was 20, Jack married Beth. Jimmy was born eight months later and Timmy was born just 11 months after that. Jack's father died just over a year ago, leaving him the grocery stores to manage. When Dave returned from the Army, he and Jack picked up their friendship right where it left off as though no time had passed. Dave developed a real attachment to Jimmy and Timmy and wound up as the permanent Friday night sitter. This story begins on Friday evening with Dave waiting for Jack and Beth to return from a night out. About 11:30 PM, Dave heard the garage door open and watched the car disappear into the garage. Moments later, Beth walked briskly into the house and headed toward the bedroom without saying one word. A few moments later, Jack entered. Dave could sense something was not right. Jack's face had a fake smile as he said, "Thanks for staying with the boys, Dave. We really appreciate it." "My pleasure. Really! You know how I love the those kids; just like they were mine." "Yeah, I know. You ought to get married and have some of your own. You're a natural." "Too busy for that married stuff. Oh, by the way, see you in the morning?" "Right. 7:00 am, as usual." "Sleep tight." Dave said as he walked out the door. He just knew something was going on but also knew to leave it alone. If Jack wanted to talk about it he would, in his own time. That is the way their friendship worked. Saturday morning the doorbell rang at 7:00 am, sharp. "Let's get going." Jack said impatiently. "I need this run." Just about every Saturday morning the two men ran three miles. It is something they used to do in high school and they got back into it when Dave moved back to town and found Jack in rotten shape. At the start, Jack was practically sprinting and Dave struggled to keep up. While they usually carried on a non-stop conversation, this morning Jack was very quiet. Dave wasn't about to ask him to slow down. He just knew something was eating at him. After about a mile, Jack began to slow to normal speed but remained silent until they reached Dave's house. "Wow, that was one hell of a run! You must be trying to kill me!" Dave managed to get out between gasps. "Come on in. I got a beer in the fridge." "OK." Jack said, sounding as though his mind was somewhere else and he followed Dave into the house. Short replies were a clear signal that Jack was not in a talking mood. Dave got the beers and they went to the back porch and sat down. As they sat there cooling down, Jack started to open up. "How long have we known each other?" "Well," Dave began, "We met when we were 12 and we're now 28, so that makes it 16 years. "Uhh, ... we've been through a lot together, right?" "Yeah." Dave replied more as a question than a statement. "You were the star quarterback and I was your star receiver. And we ran track together. We were, no, are a great team!" "Well... I have a problem I don't know how to handle. I used to talk to dad about things like this but he is gone and you are the only person I trust. It's is about Beth and me. Are you comfortable talking about such a subject?' "I'm not a marriage counselor but any time you need to talk, I'm with you." Dave replied. He thought he knew them both well enough to help talk through a problem. At this point, Jack leaned forward, placed his elbows on his knees, lowered his head, placed his hands on top of his head and stared at the floor. "Now, ... (sigh). Where, how do I start?" (Sigh) Both men sat silently for a couple of minutes. "Beth and I are having problems. Maybe you noticed. (Sigh) We still love each other very much. (Sigh) The problem is.... (Sigh) To be specific.... Dave, I don't have a very high comfort level discussing this so if you don't want to listen to this just say so. (Sigh)" "Go on, you decide, I'm with you." He could see Jack was in pain and he wanted to help. "Oh, Hell! I'll just say it! Beth says she doesn't want to have sex any more." Dead silence. Dave was a little stunned. He sure didn't know how to handle this. He wasn't exactly Dr. Ruth or Dr. Laura and he sure as hell hadn't seen this coming so he kept silent. "I believe she still loves me (sigh)." Jack continued. "At least she says she does. But, she says she just can't deal with the sex." Both men sat in silence for a few more moments. No way was Dave going to interject on this conversation. "(Sigh) She says it hurts too much. This is going to sound crazy; it's a problem a lot of men dream of; it turns out to be a curse. She says I'm too big, Dave. There! I've finally told someone. Are you still OK with this?" "Go on!" Dave said softly with sincere compassion in his voice as he watched his friend sitting there with his head still buried in his hands. He knew Jack was big. He had seen him plenty of times in the showers after football and track. He guessed Jack's cock was at least 6 1/2 inches soft, maybe more. However, he had never seen Jack hard. For years he had watched Jack walk around the locker room with his cock flopping and wobbling around like an extra thick piece of cooked spaghetti. He always wanted to get much better acquainted with it but he had too much respect for Jack and was not willing to risk their friendship. "Well... I hardly know where to go with this. I'm not ready to give up sex. I've been getting reacquainted with my palm but it's not enough. I love Beth too much to do it with some other woman. I love my family! I haven't had sex for over three weeks and I need to find a solution to this." Dave looked down at the floor and thought, 'Well, if it's love you want with your sex, you can always come over here and let me love you.' Out of the corner of his eye he saw Jack rise out of the chair and walk toward him. When he looked up Jack was staring at him with a puzzled look on his face. "What did you say!?" Instantly Dave realized he had done more than just think his solution. He had spoken it! 'Oh shit!' Dave thought. One thing Dave learned in Ranger training was to remain calm in the face of danger. He sat there looking up at Jack, waiting for him to make the next move. There was an elephant in the middle of the room and neither man wanted to talk about it. This conversation was suddenly over. Finally, Jack blinked first, "We need to talk. And, I have to go. How about we meet at Harvey's Wednesday after work?" Jack asked. Dave thought for a second then answered, "OK. Sounds good. I'll be there." Harvey's was a local tavern where they frequently met to relax and talk about all kinds of things that were happening in their lives. "See you then!" Jack said before closing the door behind him. ******* Jack closed the car door and started the engine. He was in shock. As he headed down the street his mind was not on driving. 'What the fuck? Did Dave just tell me he is gay? Did he just make a pass at me? It can't be. The way we used to double date, me banging my pussy-du-jure in the back seat and him banging his pussy-du-jure in the front seat? He doesn't look or act gay. I've never seen any indication he was interested in guys. He's a Ranger! None of this makes sense. The boys! Oh God. What if he is? And he takes care of the boys! How could he? How could I?' At that moment Jack was startled by a loud horn blaring in his ear. He had stopped for a red light, which was now green, and the driver of the car behind him was laying on his horn. Jack pulled through the intersection and stopped next to the curb. 'Just back up a minute. Dave is the best friend I have. He has stuck with me when others ran. I'm not making any conclusions without hearing his explanation. There must be a reasonable explanation. There MUST! I owe him big time. But now I have to drive a car. I'll think about this later.' ******* Dave sat on the porch, his head buried in his hands. 'Ooooh, Matts, I need you. I really need you.' "Wait. Be patient." Those words drifted through his mind. ******* This is the first of at least 15 chapters about the lives of Dave and Jack. I don't yet know the ending; the story just keeps on living.
