Chapter 36 . . . The morning was slow to start. The boys were tired and I thought they needed sugar to pump a little energy into their bodies. With Kori's help I made pancakes loaded with banana, and topped with a combination of maple syrup and melted strawberry jam. A sugar rush for sure. I had coffee and the boys had OJ. As the boys started to wake up the conversation became livelier and turned to mountain biking for today. I did promise we could go back and take the most difficult trail. That was the plan for this morning. Ayden had to return to help his granddad with the boat rentals and said he would see us later. With our showers over and in our bike clothes we again loaded the bikes and headed for Mount Pisgah. There was no question which trail for today. The boys were looking for a challenge and so it was the most advanced. I simply reminded the boys of the end of yesterdays ride . . . then it was decided . . . The Advance Trail! The trail started with a single track and we faced an immediate climb. Our granny gears were not so good to us, and in a very short time were pushing the bikes. At about a football length further the trail leveled off and we rode about half a mile with a slow steady uphill climb. Everyone was Ok but we knew this was not for wimps. We had not been riding 20 minutes and I was hurting. We eventually reached the top. We were all exhausted. We rested for a full 30 minutes without much talking. Liam was in my lap Peter and Garret were leaning back to back and Kori was against my side. I was amazed when they asked to take the same route down as yesterday and not the advanced. If anything it was a relief to me. If the uphill was that demanding what would the downhill be? At least now we knew what was ahead of us. We reached the bottom and were very thankful we were all in one piece and had not destroyed any of the bikes. We loaded the bikes on the truck and started for home. We passed a Domino's Pizza and decide to stop and bring back two pizzas. We arrived at our campsite worn out and hungry. We changed quickly and the boys had drinks ready and we tore into the pizza. As we were all talking about the rigorous ride my phone was vibrating, it was Neil. I answered with a cheerful hello expecting some wisecrack in return. Then I heard a female voice identifying herself as the ER nurse at our hospital. She informed me that Neil had fallen from his barn roof and has a transverse fracture of the tibia. He can't take the phone at this minute but wanted you to know the horses are out and he could use some help. I said . . . We will pack and should be there in 2 ½ hours. I will keep my phone on and have Neil call as soon as he can. I sat with the boys and said . . . "Hey guys I have a little bad news and I'm afraid our camping is interrupted." Of course they were not happy that the camping will be interrupted until I told them . . . "The call was from the hospital Neil fell from the barn roof and as a slight fracture of his lower leg." The boys were very upset and wanted to go right away. I said . . . "Here is the plan; Peter and Garret please make sure the bikes are locked in place, then start packing all the food and chairs. Kori and Liam you guys have helped setup and taken down the tent so you help me get that done, rolled in the tent bag. Oh we can all go in and pack our sleeping bags first and put Ayden's in the back seat of the truck for now. The boys did everything quickly and in 20 minutes everything was cleaned up and loaded. We stopped at the boat rental and told Ayden what has happened and gave him his sleeping pad and bag. We all thanked his granddad for everything and said we would be back later this summer. It was just 2 ¼ hours and we were at Baystate Franklin Medical Center and Neil was sitting waiting for us. He had a smile, a short cast and crutches. Liam ran to him and hugged him and the rest of us were afraid to hurt him. I asked him how it happened and it was he lost his balance getting off the ladder. Then he said he had to do something to get us back he missed us that much. The boys laughed and big mouth Peter said . . . "Well that was really stupid Neil." I open the passenger door of the truck and Kori hopped in first to the middle and Garret and Peter helped Neil in. We started home and I said . . . "Good thing I have the guest bedroom." But Neil insisted he wanted to go home and that he was fine on crutches. We went directly to his house and helped him in and to the living room. As we turned to go we had a little surprise. Peter announced he was staying with Neil; then Kori said he was staying too. I explained to Kori that we really needed him at home to help with unpacking and Eric needed to be worked. There was almost an argument from Kori, and then Neil said I think both Eric and Dusty need work. Perhaps Kori was not happy but he did understand what we needed to get done. We called Peter's mother and let her know that Peter was at Neil's house and what had happened. She said she would make dinner for Neil and pick Peter up in a little while. We drove in and all the way back to the barn. Kori, Liam and Garret unloaded the truck while I brought the horses in. I told Kori to go change to his old clothes and asked Garret and Liam to sort out the laundry. Kori had changed and was out at the barn and I had a chance to catch him alone. I looked at Kori and then hugged him and told him how much I loved him. I saw the look in his eyes and I felt the hug he returned and we both knew the love we shared. It was completely different than anything that had happened while camping. Garret and Liam came out to the barn and I saddled Dusty and Eric and asked Liam and Kori to exercise the two geldings. The boys rode through the upper pasture and down through the lower pasture gate. With Liam and Kori out riding it gave me the time to talk with Garret. I said . . . "Gee I'm sorry Neil got hurt and we had to cut short the camping, but did you have a good time and what was the most fun? When Garret answered it was not what I thought it would be. Garret looked at me with a funny expression and said . . . "I think it was the canoeing and mountain biking." Then maybe I shouldn't have pushed but I did and asked . . . well how about the skinny dipping and the sleepover with Ayden? Garret got flushed and then said . . . "Jake can I tell you things . . . you know private things and you won't get mad? I looked at Garret and said . . . "as long as you live here you can always be open and talk to me about anything you want." Garret continued . . . "Jake you know I had sex with Ayden right?" I said . . . "yes" . . . and he continued "but I didn't want to, I just wanted to fool around a little, then Ayden went down on me then I felt I had to do it to him. When we mountain biking today and then came home I was glad we were leaving." All of a sudden I felt so bad. I hugged Garret and said . . . "Garret I am so sorry. I didn't know, you never have to let someone do something to you if you don't agree. Then Garret said . . . "We were just touching and then he started kissing my chest and kept going further down then it happened." Garret had tears in his eyes and there was nothing I could do but hug him. So the aggressor was Ayden. Then Garret asked . . . "Jake if we go camping again are there other places maybe we could go?" And that took care of that as I answered . . . "There are many more places we can go Garret." I thought it was time to change the subject so I told Garret to get his bike we were going to trail ride in the pasture with Kori and Liam. We took off at a good pace and Garret soon had a big smile. We met Liam and Kori and they wanted to know if we wanted to race. I think not, the mountain bikes are good but this grass has us slowed down. I told Kori and Liam that I think we have enough time to groom the horses and go see Neil. Back at the barn Kori and Liam groomed Eric and Dusty and Garret and I groomed Finley. Every chance I had I looked at Kori, I think he grew a little in the last five weeks. Liam has put on weight and looks really good with a nice tan. We put the horses in their stalls and went to the house to change. I was on the porch and watching the boys as they came up the steps. All three boys are extremely good looking. We changed our clothes and headed for Neil's place and Kori made no excuse for sitting next to me. Garret and Liam were in back and Liam was right next to Garret. Over and over the thing that strikes me is how loving these boys are. We pulled in Neil's driveway and Peter and his mom and Neil were on the porch. I think they had just finished dinner. They laughed as we walked up the steps and told us to bad all gone. They had a nice pot-roast and I could still smell it. I knew the boys want something soon. Neil looked good and said he was fine and it was just a hairline fracture. The cast was one of those new ones and quite small. Peter and his mom picked up the dishes and told Neil if there was anything he needed to please give them a call. Peter said thanks to me for the great camping and winked at Kori. He would get his bike tomorrow and he and his mom left. We sat with Neil and talked and helped with a few things he needed. He said he was tried and was just going to watch TV for the night. I still think there is something he is not telling me. Neil and I had been friends for a long time; he will tell me when he is ready. Before we left we asked Neil one last time if he needed anything but he said he was fine for the night and would call if there was a problem. We went home and put a Stouffer's Lasagna with meat sauce in the oven and of course garlic bread. While it was cooking Garret and Liam played "Build a city" and Kori and I watched TV. I had missed the cuddling with Kori and it felt so good. His body was warm and he was so relaxed. I asked him if he enjoyed his ride with Liam but didn't get an answer he was asleep. Maybe I didn't need to take them camping. Maybe what they need is right here. They are just boys and what they all need is love. The oven bell went off and I had to wake Kori. He looked so lost. Then he smiled and said . . . . "Dinner" and ran to get Liam and Garret. We sat down and slowly enjoyed our dinner and each other. We mostly talked about the mountain biking. The boys were so relaxed. We finished dinner and I told the boys to go have fun and I cleaned the kitchen and put things away. It was unanimous we would all watch TV. They wanted to watch Zootopia a Disney movie and so it was. Garret stretched out at one end of the couch and I sat at the other with Kori leaning against me in his usual position and Liam with a pillow in Kori's lap playing footsie with Garret. We were home and it felt damn good! About a third away through the movie I went to the kitchen to make popcorn and a minute later Garret joined me. The corn was popping and Garret said . . . "Jake can I ask you something?" I looked at him and I knew something was not right . . . I said let me take this to Liam and Kori and I'll be right back. I gave the popcorn to Kori and Liam and went back to Garret. I looked at Garret and said . . . "I know something is bothering you so let's talk." Garret took a deep breath and teary-eyed asked . . ."Jake why does my dad hate me and why did my mom leave me with you? Wowww How do I even begin to answer those questions? I looked at Garret and said . . . "Garret I can't answer your first question, I don't even think there is an answer. I think your dad has a real problem and that problem is not you it's him. What you need to know is that your dad is missing the opportunity to love you and to be loved by you and I just have no other answer." "Your question and about your mom is that you gave her no choice. You refused to go with her and she needed to make arrangements for the divorce. She thought it was better for you to be happy here than miserable with her in China." Garret looked at me and said . . . "Jake she asked me one time, just once if I wanted to go, then she said fine stay with Jake and that's why I was crying when she left. She doesn't want me anymore than my dad." I realized at that point that Garret had been taken advantage of. Things may be simpler when you have lots of money. I have it easy compared to other teachers because of investments from my grandparents. But Garrets mother's parents own a big factory in China and money is no object so she just buys what she wants, things or people regardless of the hurt she is causing Garret. I said . . . "Garret I don't know what will happen in the future no one does. What I know now is that you have a home and a family here. I love you and so do Kori and Liam." We had not realized that Kori and Liam were at the kitchen door and had heard most of the conversation. They came in and hugged Garret, took his hand and said lets go finish the movie. I just sat in the kitchen and the boys we all stretched out on the couch. I told the boys to enjoy the movie I was going to go and take care of the horses and finish chores. I dropped a flake of hay for each of the horses, a quart of oats and topped off the water. Back in the house the movie was just ending. I told the boys' time for showers. Kori and Liam went to their room and Garret just stood there waiting for me to say something. I looked at him and said you my shower; he turned and went to the master bath. I heard the shower running and went to the door and asked if he needed anything, he answered that he was ok. I went to check on Kori and Liam and they were finished and were drying. Kori asked where Garret was and I said he was in my shower. I finished drying Liam and he wanted to cuddle and have a story so we went to my bedroom and climbed on the big bed. I heard Kori and Garret talking and then Kori asked for another towel. I went to the linen closet and took a large bath towel to Kori and found he was in the shower with Garret. Kori pulled the curtain back and asked for the apple shampoo. I gave it to him and noticed neither boy had erections. Kori started to lather Garrets hair, I closed the curtain and left. I was back on the bed with Liam and we started the story. I just started "The wolf and the Crane" when Kori and Garret came in and hopped up on the bed with Liam and me. Then they wanted the story of the "Old Man and the Sea" I asked if they were going to their bedroom or staying here, they said after the story they were going to their bedroom. I started the story and we were all cuddled up the central air was on and it was getting a little cool. We all were under the covers and soon Liam was asleep. I must be a good story teller because Kori was asleep next. With that Garret reached over and turned out the light. Kori had his arms around Liam, I hugged up to Kori and Garret had his arm around me. We were home and it felt so good.
