Chapter 38 . . . It was the middle of the night, I was having a bad dream of the wicked witch in Howl's Moving Castle. It must have been I was dreaming of Garret's mother and squeezing Kori so tightly I woke him. I just rubbed his side and said . . . "sorry I was dreaming, go back to sleep." I looked over at Garret and Liam and they were sleeping soundly. We slept late into the morning sun. It was almost 9am when we were finally up and starting the day. Garret and Kori made breakfast, toast and cereal today with OJ and coffee. I thought it would be good to get chores done, horses out and then take a ride to see Neil. If everything was good with Neil we could go fishing, a hike or bike ride. With everything finished it was 10:30 about an hour later than our usual day. So we decided to run over and check on Neil and see if he needed anything. When we arrived Neil and Peter were just finishing breakfast. Neil said he slept well and that Peter had been a great help. Peter and the boys were just talking and kicking a ball around. I had to pee and as I walked by Neil's bedroom I noticed the bed was unmade and Peters sleeping bag was open and on the bed. On the way back to the kitchen I passed the guest bedroom, the door was open and the bed was just as Neil always has it, very neat with tight covers. I thought this is interesting, maybe Garret is right. This would be a very interesting week. I sat with Neil and we talked about things in our town and how it never seems to change. I asked if he would like me to bring Dusty back or keep him until the break had healed. Neil thought it would be good to keep Dusty at my place till the cast was off; and then asked with all the boys here could they help to clean the barn completely and sweep the woodworking shop. I thought that was a great idea. I called the boys over and asked them to spend some time helping Neil by cleaning the barn and sweeping the woodworking shop. Then after that we could get the grill going and have burgers and dogs for lunch. We could spend the afternoon mountain biking on the old orchard trails down by Smith Brook. Riding next to the water should be fun. With everything finished I dug into Neil's freezer and brought a bunch of readymade burgers Neil wanted the seasoned ones. I started Neil's grill and as things were heating up the boys set the table. The burgers were done and much better than what we had camping. We finished lunch and cleaned everything up and the boys had decided they want to ride down at Smith Brook. We loaded the bikes and told Neil we would stop and check on him when we were on the way home. I would rather have gone fishing but it was 4 to 1 bike ride. I know they were all having fun and a stop to throw stones became a challenge. Then they looked for skinny flat rocks to skip across the water. The remainder of the week was about the same but we did go fishing twice and the boys had fun when Liam caught a good size trout. The only catch of the day and Liam was so excited. We took photos of all the boys together and Liam holding his prize trout. Sunday arrived and I was dreading it. I had no idea when she would call or if she would just show up. I thought about what the boys should be doing, how they should be dressed and then I stopped fretting and told them we were going for a bike ride. To hell with her! We loaded the bikes and drove past Neil's to the Crow Hill trail. We unloaded the bikes and started on the trail. We had been riding about 30 minutes when my phone was buzzing. We all stopped and the boys messing with sticks. It was her. I answered the phone politely and Garrets mother started . . . "Hello Jake, we will be at your house in one hour please see that Garret is clean and in good clothes to greet his grandparents; I want them to see how handsome he is and not in some horse clothes.". . . . . . . I replied . . . "Excuse me, we are on a bike ride and it is at least 40 minutes back to my truck, then drive back to my house. Perhaps you could have given me an idea what time you would arrive. I have taken good care of your son and made sure that he has been happy, but I am not your servant. We will be back when we get back. With that I hung up. I told the boys that I did want to have Eric and Dusty ridden and that Finley needed to be worked. (just an excuse) We all knew we needed to check on Neil as well. We loaded the bikes and I drove back rather slowly. I turned in the drive and a car, I assumed to be a rental, was parked near the front porch. I pulled all the way back by the barn and told the boys to unload the bikes. I wanted to speak with her first. She as well as the grandparents stepped out of the car. I approached her and extended my hand. It was a rather rude handshake and she asked where Garret was. I said . . . "The boys are taking their bikes from the truck and I am sure they will be finished in a minute." . . . She and the grandparents walked by me as if I didn't exist and about then Garret spotted her. I turned and caught up to her right as she was face to face with Garret. She went to hug Garret and he stepped back. His face was white and surprised and then looked angry. She started to speak to him in both Chinese and English and tried to embrace him at which point he pushed her away. The grandparents as well as Kori, Liam and Peter stood watching. Then there came the raised voices. We could understand most of it and when she told Garret he would be returning to China with her and would go to school there Garret lost it! Garret screamed at his mother. He said . . . "My father hates me and you never wanted me either you just dumped me here. What you don't know is this is my home now and you and those people behind you can leave." With that his mother slapped his face hard and screamed "Have respect!" Garret turned, ran and jumped on his bike and took off. She looked at me and said . . . "Don't just stand there go get him!" . . . . . . I looked at her and said . . . "I think it best for you to calm down and let him calm down as well. I tried to explain to you that this would be a shock to him and he may get upset; but it was your choice to spring it on him. Now you will have to deal with it on Garrets terms not yours. You never thought of Garret; just yourself." This woman stood before me showing no emotion, except anger. I thought of her as a spoiled child. I turned looked at the boys and walked in the house. I told Kori to fix drinks and make a snack. I walked back outside and told her when Garret returned I would call her, but she need to think hard how to re-approach the situation. I could not hold my mouth any longer . . . I looked at her and said . . . "Try being a mother and not a bitch!" There was no response. As Garrets mother opened the door to the car she said . . . "I better hear from you by tonight or I will call the police." I didn't answer and just thought go ahead. My concern was for Garret and the boys. Kori, Liam and Peter were in the kitchen. All three were upset and wanted to know what I was going to do. Kori wanted to know why I had not told them what was going on before she got here. The situation was very difficult to explain. I said . . . "boys right now we need to think of Garret. I think he is on his way to Neil's house" I thought maybe to just go right to Neil's then decided to call him and let him know what is going on . . . "Hi Neil I wanted to let you know that Garrets mother was here and they had a big fight. She ended up slapping Garret in front of the boys and his grandparents and Garret took his bike and I don't know where he is. I think he may be on his way to your house. Please call my cell if he shows up there." Neil understood and would sit on the porch and watch for Garret. I asked the boys to be good and just wait at the house. I went to the den desk and picked up all the papers she gave me including the Visa Card and attorney's information. As I left I told the boys please watch for Garret I will be right back. I decide to run to the sheriff's department and file a report. I arrived at the substation and fortunately the on-duty officer was a friend. We sat for a few minutes and I explained the entire situation. He made a copy of the legal papers she had made giving me custody of Garret and he thought it was good that I made the report before she called. About 7:30 she called and I had the pleasure of telling I had already filed a report of Garret running away and what the circumstances were. And that pretty much shut her up. I said . . . "As soon as I know where Garret is and he is back here on my property I will call you. You will be welcome in my house to sit and calmly talk to Garret in the presence of a Deputy Sheriff." She replied . . . fine have it your way but he will be returning with me to China. I had no sooner hung up than Neil called and Garret was with him. I thanked Neil and said I was on my way and told him I had filed a police report. I then called Deputy Sheriff Morgan and told him I would have Garret at my house at 8:30 pm. I immediately called Garret's mother and told her Garret would be here at 9pm. I ran to Neil's house and told Neil and Garret what I had done and explained to Garret the she would have to talk to him in the presence of Deputy Morgan. Garret had been crying and was very upset but understood that we had to do this. We drove in my drive and to the back porch. Peter's mother was there and Peter was going home right after he said hello to Garret and wished him well. Deputy Morgan pulled in within 5 minutes and we went to the living room. I asked Kori and Liam to go and play X-box while this was being discussed. Although Garret was very upset he sat and explained everything to the Deputy. Just before 9 Garret's mother drove in and I met her at the front door; I introduced her to Deputy Morgan and we sat. She immediately went on the attack and Morgan had to ask her to please speak slower and be polite. She simply said . . . "I don't know who you are but I am telling you this is my son and he is going with me and he will be returning to China for school." With that Morgan said . . ."I understand Garret is your son and that overrides the papers you gave Mr. Roberts for custody for the summer. However your son has repeatedly said he is scared to go with you. Furthermore you assaulted your son in front of several witnesses. We can look at this several ways, assault, assault with the intent to do bodily harm, or child abuse. In any event with the fact that Garret is saying that he is scared of you we have two choices. As Garrets mother you may choose to either allow Garret to remain here with Mr. Roberts, as you signed custody papers to him, or I can call Child Protective Services and have Garret placed in a group home until we have a court appointed mediator. Please think carefully of your child's best interest. You may want to think as a mother not a dictator. Garrets mother had a look that could kill. She reluctantly agreed to let Garret stay, but added . . . "I hope you all understand that this changes nothing. In the end Garret will return to China with me and there will be nothing you or he can do about it!" We said goodnight to Garret's mother and she left. Morgan shook hands with Garret and told him . . . "Garret you hang in there kid, I think things may change. You certainly have a good home here. Just give it some time. Deputy walked out with me and gave me a copy of the report. As I read the report he had underlined the demeanor of Garret's mother's speech and her wording and overall hostility toward Garret. The boys all went to the boys room and settled down. On the back porch Morgan told me something not to be repeated. . . . "Jake if this looks like it's going in the wrong direction, it would be bad if Garret was to continue to be a runaway, it may end in a juvenile court hearing in September or October. Right now we so are backed up I don't think we could get him scheduled before then. That is of course if the situation looked in her favor. Morgan left and then it was just Garret, Kori and Liam, and me to try to get them in a better mood. I called the boys and said "You guys all go take showers and go to bed I need a few minutes to just sit." The boys did as I asked and I made a drink and just sat on the back porch. At eleven I walked through my bedroom and to the master bath. The boys had not asked but were already in bed and covered. I stepped in the shower and the warm water felt so good. I heard Garret say . . . "Thanks Jake, I was so scared." He just went back to bed. It was a restless night for all.
