Chapter 39 . . . The night seemed to go on forever for everyone, we tossed and turned and were up several times. When morning finally came Kori and Liam were sleeping soundly. Like me, Garret was awake and needed to get up. He had not slept well and was feeling sick to his stomach. I told Garret to just go to the living room and stretch out on the couch and I would make him a hot tea with honey. I made the tea and when I went to give it to him he was sleeping. It was 8am and Liam was still asleep. Kori was in the kitchen with me and we went to the back porch to talk so not to disturb Liam or Garret. Kori wanted to know what would happen to Garret. I had to tell Kori the truth . . . "Kori I am almost positive that Garrets mother will have her way and Garret will most likely be made to go with her back to Beijing. What I don't know is how long it will take his mother, she is very controlling." Kori was upset and I understand why even if he could not explain his feelings. Things in the house had begun to be a regular routine as a family. The boys were acting more and more like brothers and the individual personalities were very apparent. Garret knows he is gay but no one would ever know it, unless he told them. He is a regular young 15 year old who looks even younger. He enjoys bike riding, fishing, soccer, baseball, and being rowdy but good-natured. He enjoys wrestling and teasing me. Kori is a cute eleven / almost twelve year old who is very typical for that age; he is sexually curious and becomes aroused easily. He enjoys all the same things as Garret plus horseback riding. The boys all act like real brothers almost all of the time; that means there are some differences from time to time but they work it out. I sit here on the porch thinking of the boys and about Liam, well Liam is all Boy! At this point sexual curiosity has not appeared, although for some reason he likes to run around naked. Liam goes from being a tiger and roughhousing to sitting in your lap sweet, gentle and loving. I don't know how I will handle the situation if Garret has to leave; more importantly is what affect will have on Liam and Kori. I don't want our family torn apart. Kori called me the boys were all awake and hungry, now that is a good sign. Breakfast . . . so I think it is a good idea to put them to work. French toast and they have to make it. This time I want Liam to break the eggs, he has been practicing. I taught Garret to make the coffee, but he doesn't like to drink it so it is just for me. Liam did great and only one piece of shell and Kori took it out. Bacon and French toast and we all sat and ate together. I told the boys I would call Neil while they did chores. With breakfast finished the boys went to the barn took the horses out and started chores. I called Neil to see how he was and to fill him in on everything. I told Neil the boys were doing chores and we would be over about 11 am. Then I asked if he needed anything but he said he was Ok. Neil and I were very close when my grandparents owned this house; I would spend part of the summer off and on here. Neil and I kind of grew up together and even had some "boy" fun when we were eleven and twelve so I kinda know what Kori is going through. Every once in awhile Neil will say . . . "Hey Jake you remember the day we were in the shed?" And I said . . . "Shut up Neil we were just kids." Things don't really change with boys. It is still "boys will be boys" and that refers to many things. The boys were done with chores and I wanted us to all shower and have clean clothes when we went over to Neil's. Kori and Liam went to their bathroom to shower and I looked and Garret and winked . . . and he and I went to the master bathroom. We set the shower to wide gentle and Garret stepped in first and I stepped in behind him. Sometimes we showered alone, sometimes like today together, sometimes fast and sometimes slow, today for Garret it will be a little slow and relaxing and perhaps a little fun. I asked Garret . . . "Strawberry or apple?" He wanted apple. I poured a good amount on his head and began to lather, unlike Liam he didn't start singing, but he was humming and it obviously felt good to him. I could start to feel his body relax and that was good. I can only imagine that he is terrified of meeting with his mother again. I washed down his back all the way to his feet then stood and turned him around to face me. This young Asian boy is so beautifully proportioned. His body is very slim and his features stand out. I began at his neck and slowly washed down to his belly button, he giggled a few times when I hit those ticklish spots. I started again at his neck and right down to just past his belly button . . . he grabbed my hand and brought it to his erection . . . my hand slowly and gently wrapped around it. I just held his erection not moving I may have squeezed it slightly. With our shower finished we dressed and called to Liam and Kori to hurry up and let's get over to Neil's house. With the horses out and chores done and all clean we jumped in the truck and drove to Neil's house. Peter was there and we talked for a bit then the boys headed out for a bike ride down toward Crow Hill Rd. Neil and I sat and talked about what may happen. Both Neil and I thought the only way that Garret would have a chance to stay here was if his father were to become involved. It didn't seem likely that would happen with what Garret's father had said. Neither Neil nor I could understand how a father could be this mean and hateful toward his son. Perhaps we don't understand the Asian culture and "saving face" old customs or religions but this is 2018. One thing we had not taken into consideration is that Garret's parents were not born here and only his dad was a citizen with dual citizenship. Neil and I decided it was worth contacting the father and at least letting him know what was happening. We immediately called his business and set up a meeting for this afternoon at 1pm. We were in hopes that Garrets mother would not call before then. I am sure she is working on a way to remove Garret today. We called Peter's mother and asked her to join us here at Neil's house. Peter's mother arrived at noon and we explained everything to her. We went to the kitchen and made lunch for the boys. Chicken salad and ham and cheese sandwiches were the boys' favorites along with chips. We had everything wrapped and Neil changed his clothes. As we were getting in the truck we could see the boys riding up the road and we quickly left. It was better not to tell Garret at this time. We arrived at Garret's fathers business five minutes early. We walked in and explained Neil being on crutches which made the conversation a little easier as he was smiling. We explained that Garrets mother was back from China. Garrets father was aware as she had him move out of the house so she and the grandparents would be there. We asked him if he knew that she was planning to take Garret at the end of the week to Beijing. He said he didn't know that. We explained everything including the altercation with her last night. I looked at him and said . . . "I don't know you sir but I do know your son and he is an exceptional boy very gifted and talented. Are you really ready to give up your son forever? To discard him as if he were something material like an old table or TV. Do you know that he told me he loves you and doesn't know why you hate him . . . do you know that?" Garrets father with tears in his eyes looked at Neil and I and began . . . "I don't hate my son, I love my son. What Garret heard was the words of me and his mother in a heated quarrel and things were said that were not meant. I would like it if he was normal, (apparently meaning not gay) but I have had time to think and I want to know him better. I am always at work and I don't spend any time with him and I know I should. If I could I would try to change. Do you boys think there may be a chance for me?" Yes! This is just what Neil and I had hoped to hear. I explained to Garrets father that at sometime this afternoon she would call and I thought she would most likely take Garret at that time. I said I will call you and you can arrive just before she arrives at my house. We will sit with you and Garret so I can keep him calm while you speak with him. Then I asked if that would be good for him. He said yes and seemed to be very happy. Neil and I left and returned to Neil's house. We sat and talked to Garret and the boys so they would all know what would happen. I said to Kori . . . "Kori this is very important and I don't know what will be said I think it is better if you, Liam and Peter stay here with Neil and Peter's mom while this is happening. The boys all understood. Neil thought it best if he were to go with Garret and me back to my house just so there was a witness on Garrets side when she was there. We were just about to get in the truck when she called and said . . . "Mr. Roberts would it be convenient if I were to pick up Garret at 3:30 this afternoon. I will have my attorney with me and papers for you to sign ending your summer custody of Garret. I hope you will understand that as his mother I have the legal right." I replied . . . "I have had the time to talk to Garret and I understand completely. Your time of 3:30 is fine I will see you then." I explained everything to Garret and Neil sat in the back and told Garret all about our meeting with his dad. I immediately called his dad and said . . . We are on our way to my house. Garrets mother is planning to pick him up at 3:30 could you please come over directly? Garrets dad said he was on his way. We arrived and pulled to the back and Garrets dad arrived at 2:30. We had an hour to sit and talk. We were not expecting what happened. Garrets dad walked up to him and hugged him and kissed his head and said . . . "Garret I don't hate you I love you, you're my son." With that Garret hugged his dad and both had tears. I thought quickly and called Deputy Morgan and explained what is happening and asked him if he could come over. He said he will be at my house in 10 minutes. Garret and his dad and Neil sat and talked and for the first time in hours I saw Garret smile and he looked relaxed. Promptly at 3:30 Garrets mother arrived with her attorney and I assume a notary. She asked why Morgan was there and I explained just as a precaution and to make sure that Garret understood everything. We had moved Garret's father's car out of sight. Neil remained in the guest bedroom with Garret's father. We sat down in the presence of the notary and Deputy Morgan. Her lawyer explained everything and asked if there were any questions. With that Garrets father walked in from the guest bedroom and said . . . "Yes there are many questions." . . . . . . . . Garret's mother became very agitated and was asked to please remain calm and polite. Garret's father explained how he and his mother verbally fought all the time. Things were said by both of them that were hurtful, mean and at many times aimed at Garret as well. He then looked at everyone and said . . . I don't hate my son; I love Garret I just need to know how to show it; and you his mother are not taking my son to China!" With this the lawyer asked everyone to please not talk. He then said that this has changed everything. He asked Morgan to step outside with him and they both excused themselves. Garret was asked to go to his room for awhile. After about 10 minutes Morgan and the lawyer returned. They asked to see Garret and sat with him in the kitchen. Garret was asked if he wanted to go with his mother. His answer was "No". He was then asked if he wanted to go with his father. Garret said not right now and then asked could I just stay here for now? . . . . . . . . . . The lawyer / attorney for his mother said how about you sit on the porch while we talk to your mother and father. Garret went to the porch but looked at me with a very sad face. The lawyer and Morgan returned and sat. It was like an explosion was about to happen. Quietly he began to explain. Looking directly at Garrets mother he said . . . "With what has happened today and the fact the Garrets father wants to be a part of Garrets life and will contest you taking Garret out of the country we have to require more time to resolve the issue. To further complicate the issue is that it appears you hit your son and there were witnesses and you had not made me aware of that. . . . He continued . . . "Deputy Morgan and I asked Garret if he would like to go with you today and he emphatically said "NO!" that he is scared of you. Don't become agitated. We also asked Garret if he would like to go with his father and he said "Not at this time" which indicates that he would go with his father in the future." . . . . . He continued . . . . . "You both are his parents and you now must make a decision Garret may remain here with Mr. Roberts in a safe and loving home or you may ask Deputy Morgan to call CPS and have Garret placed in a group home. As Garrets mother, and knowing that his father is willing to get a court order prohibiting you from taking him out of the country you must decide." He continued . . . . "Garrets father is willing to allow you to remain in the house with the grandparents until this is worked out in the best interest of Garret. With the help of attorneys for both of you visitation can be worked so that you both have equal time. Should you decide to have Garret remain here you both will be presented with an itemized bill of expenses for Garret." The lawyer looked at Garrets mother again and said . . . "Think carefully. I recommend you leave Garret here and take appropriate action to solve the matter without hurting Garret any more than he has been." Garrets mother looked at her attorney and said . . . "I expected more of you." She looked at me and said . . . "I would like to speak with Garret" . . . I said . . . "Of course I will have him meet you in the kitchen." I walked out on the porch and explained everything to him and what his mother's attorney had recommended. Garret seemed somewhat relieved and went to talk with his mother; I don't know what she said, but perhaps she saw the harm all of this was doing to Garret. In a few minutes Garret and his mother came to the living room. He looked so much better and spoke to all of us and said he thinks things will work out. He hugged his father and then said he was going to have dinner with his grandparents and would be back later tonight. I was happy for everyone. His mother had calmed down and was smiling and I think his father was really ready to have a good relationship with him. Best of all he would get to know his grandparents and that is important. Garret changed his clothes to his very best for meeting his grandparents and dinner. His mother and father looked so proud; he is a very handsome boy. The notary and the attorney left and Garret and his mother drove off with Garret waving. I think everything will be fine. Sometimes it just takes a little wakeup call. Officer Morgan, Neil and I spoke with Garrets father for a bit and assured him that we would look out for Garrets best interest. I said we would help make it so he was able to get to know Garret better. Garret's father and Deputy Morgan left and Neil and I returned to Neil's house. We arrived at Neil's and told the boys and Peter's mother everything and we were all feeling much better. Peter and his mom headed home and I needed to get Liam and Kori home and get chores done. I asked Neil if he wanted to have dinner with us but he said he was a little tired and wanted to just crash. Liam, Kori and I talked on the way home and the boys were happy that it looked like things would be good and that Garret would get to spend time with his dad. We were hungry, very hungry. We were home and the boys changed and went to do chores so we could have the night off till Garret got home. I went to the kitchen and started to make shepherd's pie, oh yes my favorite too. Ground beef with a mashed potato crust and I like corn between and gravy. Chores done the boys set the table, it felt funny without Garret, and we enjoyed dinner with laughs and stories about when we were camping. We started to plan more camping and the trip to Yale and to see Professor. After dinner Kori picked a good movie and we sacked out on the couch munching on chips and dip. Liam was Liam with his pillow in Kori's lap and stretched out like he was the king. We waited for Garret and wanted to hear all about his dinner and grandparents.
