Our Christmas Eve turned into a hair-raising event when we brought Joe and Miriam, who was about to give birth, home with us from being out in the cold. Jonah's flat now occupied by 9 was a continued flurry of activity. The kitchen remained the center for all directions and keeping Kori, Simon, Peter, and Liam busy. Jonah, Joe and I were attending to Miriam and new baby Jacob. Things finally settled down and all was quiet. I was sitting quietly on the couch and noticed Kori looking at me. I almost thought he was about to cry. Jonah and Joe were upstairs with Miriam and the other boys were off playing with something. This was the first time Kori and I had a chance to be alone for a few minutes. He came over and cuddled next to me and as I hugged him he began to cry softly. I lifted his chin and asked . . . "Stud muffin what's going with the tears?" Kori hugged me so tight as he said . . . "I miss my mom" It was Christmas and the first Christmas without his mom. Despite what Kori may not have had he knew that his Mother loved him. The pain that emotional hurt he could not explain was ripping and tearing him apart like tigers in the night. As I held Kori I could only imagine how he must be suffering. Liam walked in and immediately came to hug his brother. Liam so sweetly and gently kissed Kori and Kori turned and wrapped his arm around Liam and they just loving held each other and cried. What pain must a 12 year old feel? As tough as Kori appears at times the simple truth is ..... He is only a boy. We were sharply brought back to reality when my phone began collecting one text after another. First form Ian, then Peter, Neil, Garret, Professor, Yori, Riku, Morgan and Helen. It was all Happy news and Merry Christmas from home and a ton of questions some I could not answer under the present circumstances. "Prying Eyes" The best news was the hot water is fixed and the horses are all fine. Ian informed us that they have been out almost every day with the sleigh and Eric and Dusty get excited when they see the harness. Neil said they have begun to train Finley to harness and putting it on and off is not a problem. Ian and Neil will hitch Finley to the front sleigh next week and just walk with him as he pulls it. Garret, without going into details, said that nights have been cold outside and very warm inside. Ha! I could bet that nights inside have been Hot! I sent a text back to Garret . . . "Hey you two better be doing laundry!" In return I got a smiley face. Then came the text from Peter; "Hi guys just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas and say I miss you. I been staying a lot over at Ito's with Riku cause Garret's been with Ian. Riku is teaching me to play piano and some "other things" I'll show Kori when he gets home. Neil and I are thinking of another "Project" Jake." Professor was wishing us a Merry Christmas and had received a nice letter from Jonah just after we arrived. Jonah mentioned how much he Likes Jacob and the boys. Helen and Morgan and Yori had included in their text messages that it has been quite cold and a good amount of snow. They have all been on sleigh rides and that is looks like winter will have much more snow than last year. It was nice to hear from everyone and I had to smile as Kori paid no attention to Helen's text. It wasn't that he showed no interested it was more like she didn't exist. I think Kori would like to draw a line to which Helen can't cross. The boys were much better and had laughed at some of the text messages. Kori was back to being Kori and wanted to make some tea. He smiled at me and said . . . "Jake tell Jonah I can show him how to make tea if he wants." Kori got caught in his comment and Jonah was hot on Kori's heels and when he snatched Kori by the collar all I could hear was giggling and laughing. Liam and Peter weren't to be left out and now there was a wrestling match on the floor. Simon stood watching just shaking his head and I heard him say . . . "Hmm some adults never grow up!" I added . . . "Damn there will be hell to pay if you wake the baby!" I got a big smile from Simon. Liam and now Peter crawled up were hugging me when I heard Peter . . . "Uncle Jake tell us a story please" I thought and it struck me about this morning and the frost on the windows. I remember this story about the "Frost" I think it's by someone named Hanna Gould.. Ok but Simon and Kori have to sit and if you can get Jonah away from his new baby visitor upstairs he could make tea and show Kori how it's done. "Geeez Kori I'm just kidding" any way you rug rats it goes like this . . . The Frost looked forth, one still, clear night, And he said, "Now I shall be out of sight; So through the valley and over the height in silence I'll take my way. I will not go like that blustering train, the wind and the snow, the hail and the rain, who make so much bustle and noise in vain, But I'll be as busy as they!" Then he went to the mountain, and powdered its crest, He climbed up the trees, and their boughs he dressed with diamonds and pearls, and over the breast. He went to the windows of those who slept, and over each pane like a fairy he crept: wherever he breathed, wherever he stepped, By the light of the moon were seen most beautiful things. There were flowers and trees, there were bevies of birds and swarms of bees, There were cities, thrones, temples, and towers, and these all pictured in silver sheen! ....... Jonah was exhausted by all the events of the day and we were all facing Christmas in the morn. I dared not wake our sleeping host. Simon looked at me and without hesitation he smiled and tapped Jonah on the shoulder and said . . . "Jonah wake up your snoring is loud enough to wake the baby. Jonah woke with a start and said . . . "I was just resting my eyes" That brought quiet laughs from all of us. Kori came and for the first time here he sat in my lap. Everyone was busy cleaning up in the kitchen and I heard Kori whisper in my ear . . . "I love you" I knew Kori was tired and suggested he head to bed. Kori started his way to the bedroom and . . . behold . . . there went Peter and Liam right behind. For some reason the song Christmas Waltz came to mind some of the first words are . . . " Frosted window panes, candles gleaming inside, Painted candy canes on the tree, Santa's on his way, he's filled his sleigh .........." We are having an amazing Christmas here with Jonah, Simon, and Peter and I'm thinking of home too. The lights went dark and there was the soft glow of street lamps as they entered through the frosty window panes. Now the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in the hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; We were all nestled all snug in our bed and visions of sugar-plums danced in our heads. When all of a sudden Peter exclaimed . . . "I heard Santa!" to which Liam replied . . . "Peter go back to sleep" ........... To Be Continued ...............
