As usual the night had been cold and the wind here in New Haven was howling. It was Sunday and Jake and I had the day to just relax. Well the problem was that my mind was on yesterday and I didn't get much sleep as I just tossed and turned all night thinking of the boat. Jake and I had decided to take the summer off this year and not do the lecture circuit and instead spend time enjoying ourselves Liam, Abby and the boys. With the house and student loans all paid and what we had saved this could be a full summer of just enjoying life. Jake was at the stove making a good old fashioned New England Sunday breakfast, Jonah would laugh at that. Six eggs, 8 strips of bacon, fried potatoes, 4 slices of toast, his with peanut butter mine with strawberry jam, I drink tea and Jake has coffee. As you can see breakfast has not changed much in 21 years. Oh well except I'm 33 and Jake is getting on in years at 46. I hope he can't read my mind. Just a note . . . Jake's better in bed than ever . . . . . . ........... "Hey Jake after breakfast do me a favor and watch a video with me." . . . "Kori what video? .... No porn we had our fun last night and I want to get some house work done today." . . . . "Jake this breakfast is awesome; did you put some garlic on the eggs? And no it's not porn." ...... "Ok stud-muffin then you have my full attention and I think I know what the video is about anyway." Jake and I sat enjoying breakfast and reviewing the last two speakers at the conference this past Thursday and Friday. They were giving details regarding global warming and the melting of the polar icecap. Hmmm ... That is just another good reason for Jake to watch the video with me. We finished breakfast cleaned the kitchen and piled on the couch. I had Jakes undivided attention ................... I was just about to turn on the video when Jake said . . . "Kori maybe we should think about getting a sailboat." ..... Damn! Jake already knew what I was going to show him and his sly, devious smile gave him away. So I said . . . "Jake you know I was thinking of maybe a small camp out west in Montana ..........." . . . . "Kori don't even try that you've been looking at the boat magazine for a month and that page is all crumpled up. Ok so I looked at it too so let's see the video." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuNW3O1nwdU The video started and we both sat and watched it 4 times. For me I think I've watched it 12 times and could watch it more. Jake surprised me when he said . . . "Kori you think we could fly down to Ft. Lauderdale next week end and take a look at her?" Wow . . . I must have looked like a kid with new trains. I checked to see if we could get a direct flight and sure enough Providence, RI direct to Ft. Lauderdale. I called the Yacht Broker and made the arrangements and we were all set. "Hey Jake I booked us on a flight to Ft. Lauderdale and we don't have to rent a car Jordan Yacht will pick us up and they are making hotel reservations as well." .......... "Kori they must really want to sell that boat. Maybe you can get a good deal." Jake had a thought . . . "Kori you know we haven't heard anything from the foster parent program do you think we should let them know we will be out of town for a few days?" . . . "Jake that may be a good idea because we told them anytime for placement would be good and with the way things go for us we'll be on the plane and they'll call." We had been assigned a caseworker in the beginning in the event there was an emergency. It was just after noon and we decided to call Karen at "Foster Parents" and let her know we would be away for 4 or 5 days. Jake was just about to make the call when he stopped .................. "Kori you've brought up another question. What if we buy a boat and then get a foster child?" Jake has a real good point . . . . . "Jake I think it would be fine that's why this boat is perfect. It has plenty of room with two cabins we can always have the larger cabin and our boy can have his cabin and still have room for his friend to come along." . . . . . "Kori I guess your right there is plenty of room and with all the sailing you have done with the Mystic Seaport group I know you can handle this boat." Jake nearly had his hand on the phone when it rang. I saw Jake's face drop. Then knew why as I heard him say . . . . "Oh Hi Karen I was just about to call you, ...... Oh I see well yes we will be here; about what time do you think you will be here? Should we have something ready for them to eat? Would pizza be alright? Ok Karen we will see you in about an hour. Yes I am sure Kori will be both happy and excited. Thank you." Jake looked at me and I already knew . . . . "Kori I don't know what to say but Karen is on the way with an emergency placement of twins, nine year old twins; more precise nine year old Asian twins. They speak some English she said. I know this may change our plans and I know you will be disappointed." I was somewhat shocked that it happened right as we were to call and say we would be out of town. How do things happen like this? I thought I best call and cancel everything for next weekend ...... then I thought maybe I better just give this some time. I looked at Jake and said . . . "Jake this is exciting we've been talking about kids, things will work out. Just think a boat and kids. What a great summer it's going to be" It was just 2pm ............. "The Knock." I looked at Jake and I think we were both excited and scared at the same time. Jake opened the door and there stood Karen with 2 of the cutest little Asian boys. I looked at Jake and Jake looked at me and we both said it at the same time "Ning" Karen stepped in with the boys in tow but slightly behind her. . . . "Jake and Kori I want you to meet Ji-ho and Ji-hu they may want to stay with you for a little while." I went to shake hands with the boys but they backed up a little and bowed. Second thought I raised my hand like high five . . . . . . ahhhhh yes! Great result they slapped it quick and I got a smile. Jake did the same and showed the boys the pizza and drinks and that was the beginning of a New Love Story. The shy boys turned into all consuming Tasmanian devils with never ending smiles and continuous chatter that we didn't understand. Karen tried to apologize for their behavior and say they have never acted like this. Jake and I just smiled and said "their home". Jake and I took turns sitting with Karen at the table with the boys going over all the paperwork and signing our names in about 50 places. We were given their passports and new American ID's and what clothes they had and that was not very much. I immediately thought back to when Jake took me to buy all new clothes. Karen saw a tear as it slowly descended my cheek. Jake knew right away and said he would explain later. We told Karen about the plans we had made for next weekend and asked if it were possible for the boys to go or should we cancel the plans. Karen said that everything for us was being handled by the University and she thought that the boys would love a trip like that and it would be good for them. In the meantime they would try to find the only living relative. A grandmother but now living in China and going by her Chinese name. It was just 3:30 when Karen said goodbye to the boys and we now had two rug-rats to make happy. I called the boys . . . . "Hey Ji-ho and Ji-hu come on we need to go shopping and get some new clothes." The boys came running and then asked . . . "Were staying with you?" and I said . . . "Yes your staying with me -- Kori and him -- Jake ,,, Ok?" The boys grinned and looked at me and Jake and said . . . "We speak English pretty good and we want American names, Ok, you - Kori and you - Jake?" Jake started to laugh and so before shopping we started with American boy names. We opened the list of 100 popular names and said each one to the boys. Ji-ho is now Kyle and Ji-hu is now Justin, hmmm not bad Kyle and Justin and it hit me right away. Jake looked at me and said . . . "Kevin and the boys." Yep Jake was right and it brought back so many memories. OMG Speedo swim suits and Yes these rug-rats will have the same. The boys now happy and full of pizza were ready to go shopping. Out the door and almost to the car / suv when Justin,- I think, they are identical twins, said . . . "I gotta go pee." One look from Jake and it's like we're thinking the same thing "Liam" so it was back in the house and Justin did have to pee and pee and pee. We hit Wal-Mart, the shoe store, our favorite swimsuit place and 3 new pair of Speedos for the boys, dang they are cute in those little suits. We learned something about the twins real fast. These two boys are not shy, they are the best little actors Jake and I have ever seen. Now get this, they actually try to get the attention of people especially young women and then put on an act. It was slow going trying to get out of the stores as they are getting little hugs and compliments about how "cute" ... oh and they know it. We were finished shopping and then made a big mistake. We drove over to Yale dining room. Fist it took the boys forever to pick out what they wanted, rice about 4 different kinds, and oh 3 deserts and Jake put his foot down, No Soda! Sooooo......... Kyle started to get tears . . . . Geeeeez Please we had about 20 students saying "Hey their kids let them have a soda tonight it won't hurt them for tonight and you can be mean tomorrow." Then to make matters worse, if that was possible, Jake and I were recognized by a number of students and it was . . . . "Where did you get the little muffins? You been holding back on us Professor? Oh they are so cute." Now with all the students falling all over Justin and Kyle the boys began to put on a show. Next thing Jake and I know is the students have the boys up on shoulders and dancing all around the dining hall. We have completely lost control and Kyle and Justin are having a blast. Someone put on some K-pop music and now the boys are dancing like ..... a Korean pop star. The dining room was alive and I wanted to go home, am I getting old? It was almost 7 and Jake finally got hold of Kyle, I think, and I grabbed the other one and with lots of cheers and waves we were out the door. The boys are 9, I need to remind myself the boys are 9. Ahhhhh another one of those moments ... I remember Liam on occasion and Jake has that look of ...... Ha, Kori remember what you ask for. . . ...................... I had to think of what Jake went through to keep us happy and never really get mad, oh he pretended at times but ........ Well you already know what Jake was like. We arrived home and the boys were all excited about their new clothes and we all helped put the clothes away. After everything was straightened out we went to the living room and explained that the boys would go to the on campus elementary school and told them about the trip to Ft. Lauderdale next weekend and the boat. While we were talking Kyle or Justin had this t-shirt that looked kinda grubby and Jake asked what it was and why he was squeezing it and smelling it. It was instant that both boys sat quietly; gently tears began to fall from their eyes. Jake and I held the boys as they sobbed softly. Kyle and Justin held on to each other and the t-shirt and the boys fell asleep while we held them tightly. Jake was able to get up while I hugged the boys and he called Karen. When Jake explained what had happened Karen realized that she had neglected to tell us that the t-shirt was what Ji-ho had on when his mom died and he was holding on to her at the accident. She said he goes to bed with it and the boys sleep together with the shirt. Karen also said that if Ji-ho sees a car accident he curls up in a fetal position and sucks his thumb. Jake returned and we were able to put the boys to bed. We both called our grad student TA's for tomorrow. I think I was feeling much of what Jake must have felt when he would hold me or Liam when we cried. I don't know if I am as strong as Jake because right now I just want him to hold me. I still miss my mother she deserved so much more than life gave her. Mom I love you. Jake and I went to bed tired no more like exhausted emotionally. It felt so good to have his arms once again around me holding me and keeping me safe. I was nearly asleep and I felt strange. It was almost as if I was being watched. I turned and there were four little eyes looking at me and Jake. I lifted the covers and the rug-rats crawled in and snuggled up. Morning, oh it was morning and I realized that there were little rug-rats in bed with me and Jake. Ok so what you say. . . . . . well you see Jake and I are naked. Jake didn't even know Kyle and Justin were in our bed. I poked Jake a few times and he turned over and just as I was about to get my morning kiss ............ Akkk ......... Jake spotted the boys. Jake looked at me and I could read his lips . . . . "Kori ! When did this happen?" I just whispered . . . . "Jake please go get boxers for me, and you put some on too." Thank goodness the boys kept sleeping and Jake didn't wake them as he helped me get my boxers on. Jake and I got to the kitchen to make coffee and tea and trying to figure out the days routine. We were sitting at the table when two cute little munchkins appeared ..... naked. "Hey where are your PJ's and were you in bed with me and Jake kike that?" The boys started giggling and Justin, I think, said . . . "we don't wear PJ's or anything we never did, but neither do you." What? I thought me and Jake ........... Oh never mind somehow they found out Jake and me sleep naked too. I told the boys to go get something on then I wanted to talk to them. Jake was making pancakes when the boys returned. I looked at them carefully and asked . . . . "Ok so how do we quickly know who is Justin and who is Kyle?" ahhhhh is there a difference ...... one of the boys said . . . "Look at my eyes they are dark brown, I'm Kyle look at Justin and his is much lighter and Karen called them honey eyes. There is one more difference but it's all covered up now." Hmmm I think I know what he may be talking about but will let that go for now. The boys sat down for breakfast and when they sit they sit together, they sit close together. They have been looking at Jake and me all during breakfast. Kyle seems to be the more forward of the two and finally looked right at me and asked . . . "Kori are you and Jake ..... um well do you and Jake, . . . . are you and Jake Gay?" ................. Wow the boys are 9 and that was pretty blunt. Jake looked at me and I looked at Kyle and now Justin is looking directly in my eyes and I said ....... "hmmm Kyle that was a very big question and I guess you are curious and it is better for Jake and I to always be honest with you and Justin. Yes Jake and I are gay. Does it make a difference to you and Justin and would you rather Karen find another foster family?" Justin was already at my side as Kyle ran and hugged me I could feel the tears as they were soaking my shirt. He hugged me hard and kept saying he was sorry and that he and Justin wanted to stay with me and Jake. He just wanted to ask the question. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what the boys are saying because of the accent but this wasn't one of those times. When we were all smiling again I got brave and asked why Kyle had asked the question. He said . . . "we talked about it in school before we came to America, lots of boys in Korea are gay but sometimes we get called names here because in Korea boys walk to school holding hands but they aren't gay we just are best friends; I'm sorry I asked Kori." "Hey you two rug-rats ask anything you want it is the only way you can learn. Everyone is a little different even you two. Imagine if everyone in the world looked like Justin, talked like Justin, ate like Justin, peed like Justin" ........ everyone was laughing and we had to get the boys over to campus and registered for school and they needed to have a bath. Jake looked at me and said . . . . "Kori I had years of showers and baths with you and Liam it's your turn." I looked at the boys and asked . . . "Bath or shower?" the reply . . . . "Do we have to?" Ok shower . . . . "Go Now!" It was two cute little butts stepping into the shower and now I knew the other way to tell the difference between the boys. Soon we were off to the campus and registered the boys for on-campus school. I am so happy Jake and I teach at Yale. While Kyle and Justin are with Jake and me they will be afforded the very finest education here at our faculty family school and day care center. There was just one problem the school will only recognize their Korean names for school records but they can use their new American names for class and friends. The week passed quickly and Jake and I learned to be very careful of what we said so not to remind the boys of the accident. I had made flight changes but didn't inform Jordan Yacht that we had the boys. Friday morning and we were on the way and the boys were excited about the flight. Yep they were excited we were in the air about 40 minutes when both boys decided to show everyone what they had for breakfast. We were so lucky to have extra shirts in the carryon luggage and the flight attendant was the very best. After new shirts and a little air spray the boys were asleep till landing. We were met by our agent and driven to our hotel to freshen up. Perfect two queen size beds and a great view of where the boat was. Now the boys were fine and in just a little over an hour we were at the boat. One look at the boat and I knew Jake and I were in love with her. This boat was just what I had dreamed of for years and years. I thought back to the first time Jake took me to Mystic everything came back in a flash and here I am standing on what I hope was to be my dream come true. The boys had already gone below and found their cabin, well that may change as I think Jake and I will have the larger of the two cabins. The salon (living/dining area) was huge and would allow Neil and Peter to join us or they could have the cabin and the boys could sleep in the salon. The main cabin has both head and shower and the second cabin has a remarkable head. I looked at Jake and his smile said it all and there was nothing left for us to do but take a day cruise tomorrow and I think that will seal the deal. The morning came with bright sun and clear skies and we were at the boat at 9. The boys were in their new Speedos and Jake and I were in new brightly colored shorts/swim suits. We motored out from Ft. Lauderdale and the water was sparkling and the most beautiful blue. The morning was spent being schooled on this that and everything you could imagine. The boys were so good and paid attention to every detail. After lunch we each got the chance to take the helm. For me it was natural after years attending the Mystic sea school and club. This boat was just slightly smaller than one I had sailed for two summers. The boat handled like a dream and was fast to respond to the smallest change of the wheel and wind. My dream was in my hands. Jake had already said yes but to make it official we had to ask the boys. I'm sure that their squeals of joy said it all. We pulled into the intracoastal north of Ft. Lauderdale dropped anchor and enjoyed an hour of swimming and snacks. Soon it was up anchor and return to the Ft. Lauderdale and tie the boat. The boys were fast asleep as Jake and I sat and went over the papers. Asking price $93,000 I smiled when we signed the papers for $84,000 and that included a complete detailing and updated navigation software system. We were taken back to our hotel and provided with a car for tomorrow so we could go on an adventure with the boys. We decided to go hog wild tonight with Kyle and Justin and take in a show at one of the close by resorts. It was a Hawaiian show and feast. Jake and I were really enjoying the evening when I turned to ask the boys if they were having fun ........ The little brats were gone .......... I looked around then Jake looked over by the pool ............ my heart began to race and I felt sick ........ . . . . . . To Be Continued . . . . . .
