Morning broke as sunlight began filtering through the cabin windows. My arms were around Justin so cute and soundly sleeping. I looked at Kori sleeping as he held Kyle and they were so peaceful I really didn't want to wake them. I just watched and decided to close my eyes and rest another hour. I'm not sure how much time passed but I felt a finger tracing around my forehead and down my nose. My eyes opened just as Justin flicked my nose with his finger and he had the cutest little grin; then the words . . . "I gotta pee". The word pee must have had some magical power because now Kyle was awake and he exclaimed . . . "me too". The boys wiggled from the clutches of Kori and me and were off to their cabin to pee. I looked at Kori and we knew we had maybe 45 seconds. We scooted together for a good morning kiss, a slight grope, and were attacked by two little munchkins who were ready to explore the city. Kori and I laughed as we have realized that with the boys private time is little and far between. It was my turn to make breakfast and I asked Kori and the boys what they wanted for breakfast. Kori didn't stand a chance to answer as the twins exclaimed . . . "pancakes with strawberries" in stereo. The twins many, many times will answer or ask a question at exactly the same time. It's most fun to hear them when they are on opposite sides of a room or here in the salon. I looked at Kori as he replied . . . "Jake I think I'll have pancakes with strawberries if you don't mind" well the boys giggled and said . . . you-nam-mum-us. So while I was making the Pancakes, tea, coffee, OJ, and milk Kori was getting the boys to wash and get out some clean clothes. With breakfast finished we grabbed a sweater and headed for the city. We hopped on a bus to Times Square and the boys were so excited with all the people, sounds, and lights everywhere. Kyle and Justin were pointing at this and that and this person and that person. Kori and I had to suggest to the boys that the way they were pointing at people may not be quite so polite. We decided to visit the Empire State Building first and well for Kori it was remembering the past and for Justin and Kyle it was an exciting adventure as they explored and touched everything they could. We were in the lobby when I first noticed Kori, the way he was standing and how his expression was strained. I was standing slightly to his right when Kyle took his free hand and tugged on Kori's arm and said . . . "Kori you're hurting my hand". Kori let go of Kyle's hand but put his arm around Kyle and pulled him close and I heard him say . . . "Sorry Kyle but stay very close to me". I realized Kori was uncomfortable with the large number of people all jammed together he's always been like that. In the past months I have seen Kori become very protective of Justin and Kyle and will sometimes mention Karen the case worker in a very negative way. I reached up and lightly rubbed Kori's back just to remind him I was there. I asked Justin to change to my left side and he said . . . . "Great my hand was getting all sweaty" then I saw Justin as he took Kyle's hand so we were all connected. We were in the elevator and soon on the observation deck and Kori relaxed and the boys were having a great time looking through those viewers. Kori looked at me and said . . . "Jake I think these viewers are the same ones from 20 years ago". Looking at them they could have been but the price has changed, a lot. Soon we had finished the tour of the great building and back on the street and guess what Kori and I heard? . . . . "We're hungry and gotta pee". Yes in stereo. Well the timing was good and we made our way to this huge McDonalds. Burgers, fries, drinks for four of us $62.00, I'm not complaining it was worth it just to have a place to pee. We were back on the street and purchased tour bus tickets for a jump on/off bus tour and that was great we had the rest of the day to jump on and jump off at any stop we wanted. We jumped off down at Washington Square Park lower Manhattan just to see what everyone we had talked to about interesting places were really talking about. It was interesting! ! ! The park is almost 10 acres in what is call Greenwich Village and that rang a bell for me as my dad had called a place for hippies. Well it sure looked nice to me and Kori and the boys were having a blast with the Frisbee and had me and Kori involved much of the time and the exercise felt good. We had been told that the park was a meeting place for all kinds of people and a center for cultural activity; we didn't see much of anything happening. We reached the Arch, the northern gateway to the park a place of tradition in celebrating nonconformity. Ok we noticed some nonconformity. First let me explain, Kori and I and the boys have neat short haircuts as well as conservative preppy clothes; we were the only ones here that looked like that. Kyle and Justin noticed this young guy with matted hair to his shoulders. Little big mouth in a rather large voice and looking directly at the young man said . . . "How disgusting, is he a bum"? Kori was embarrassed and I could tell by how red his face was. Fortunately the young man with dreads had ear buds in and was either singing or talking to himself. I have to admit his dreads were gnarly giving the appearance of a bum. A legend and in our guide book it says that the large elm at the northwest corner of the park is called the Hangman's Elm and was an old hanging tree. Of course that excited the boys and they just had to see it. Now just to set the record straight there are many stories about just which tree was the hanging tree. We continued to walk around this beautiful park. We all began to hear music but it was the boys who spotted the street performers first. Kori was reading the guide that was saying that the presence of street performers has been one of the defining characteristics of the park. When we reached the area of the music it became so much more; there was something of interest for everyone. Kyle and Justin wanted to see and visit with all the artists. There were the musicians and they were amazing mostly college kids but some old-timers as well. Classical, Jazz, Blues you name it and someone was there performing it. Then there were the artists painting on canvas and some potters. We continued walking as it seemed it would never end. We reached the east side and it sounded like a band playing and Kori spotted it first followed by Kyle and Justin. We arrived just in time for a parade; Oh it was a gay parade. We had front row standing room as the first members arrived. The boys were excited to point out these most elaborate costumes worn by young very slim men or teen boys. They were all quite tall and the gowns were huge and beautiful. Kyle and Justin would point to one and then ask . . . "Kori are you sure that is a boy?" The boys were thrilled as some of the performers would wave to Justin and Kyle and then the boys would wave back. The float was decorated in rainbow colors and had a number of men young and old in different stages of dress throwing candy to the crowd. The next group changed the spirit of the parade and the boys. The group was rowdy tough looking and nearly naked. They approached the crowd close to us and beckoned Kyle and Justin to join them. I'm sure they were teasing but the boys grabbed tight to Kori and me and pulled us back. I heard Kyle when he said to Kori . . . "Let's go, I wanna go" Justin had already turned away and was pulling me away from the street. Kori was holding Kyle's hand but this time it was Kyle who was squeezing Kori's hand about as tight as he could. We reached the bus stop and in 3 minutes were on the bus. Kori asked the boys where they want to get off next and both boys said . . . . "The Boat" . . . Kori and I tried to lighten the mood and said lets go for an early dinner but that was a no go. The day had been long and it was obvious the boys were exhausted and needed some quiet time and a rest. We made our way uptown where we could catch a regular bus back to 79th Street and the Boat Basin. On the ride back Justin and Kyle never let go of Kori or me. We arrived at the docks and spoke with the dock master for a few minutes before going to the boat and we arranged to have the boat cleaned tomorrow while we were in the city. We unlocked the boat washed the grime of the city from our hands and faces and got some cold drinks. It was beautiful and we sat in the cockpit and just rested. It was so nice, so quiet and the boys immediately snuggled up to Kori and me. After a short rest it was my turn to make dinner and Kori sat with the boys. Tonight it was pork chops, mashed potatoes, peas and cookies. Dinner was ready and we talked about the day and the Empire State building was the best and they liked the music and art at the park. Kyle was very quiet and hardly touched his dinner but just said he was tired. Justin helped me clean up after dinner while Kori went over plans for tomorrow and looked at the charts for returning home to Mystic. Kyle watched TV for a little bit then without saying anything got up and went to the boy's cabin and shut the door. Kori looked at me but said nothing; we have learned that it is better to let things just go for awhile. Justin, Kori and I watched a stupid movie till 9 when Kori went to talk to Kyle. When Kori returned he said . . . "Kyle said he's ok and just tired from the day and he's going to take a quick shower and go to bed." Now Kori and I know something is really wrong but it will come out when Kyle is ready. Justin hugged me and Kori and went to his cabin, it was not more than 10 minutes when he came back and said goodnight but he looked sad. Kori said . . . "Jake you know something is bothering Kyle you think maybe you should try to talk to him?" I said . . . Kori you and I know Kyle doesn't like to be pushed and in the past it just takes time for him to work it out a little then he will be asking us to help solve the problem." "Guess your right Jake I just don't like seeing him like this." We both knew we would fix the problem in the morning. I smiled as I looked at Kori and said . . . "Kori I don't know about you but I'm as tired as the boys think I will shower and get some sleep." Kori looked at me and there was that look. ...... Oh come on you all know what "look" I'm talking about. The master cabin has a nice shower but small and I have no idea how Kori and I managed to get in together never mind the fun we had. After the shower it was time for a good sleep and this time the boys were in their cabin so Kori and I were asleep in seconds. I was dreaming about sailing and pulling into this little cove with crystal clear water when there was knocking at the cabin door. Kyle and Justin rushed in and were on the bed in seconds and wearing underwear, they never wear underwear. Kyle was breathing hard, appeared very anxious and almost ready to cry; then looking directly at Kori he just blurted out . . . "you and Jake are gay aren't you? ....... Have you ever ........ . . .
