I was looking directly into Kyle's eyes, tears now streaming down his face as he was about to ask ........ Kyle let go of his brother's hand and sprang forward wrapping his arms around me and all I heard was . . . "Kori I love you." Justin was already under the covers with Jake as I lifted the covers and Kyle slid in. I wrapped my arms tightly around him and he was asleep in seconds. I looked over at Jake, a smile on his face, his arms wrapped lovingly around Justin just as he held me so many nights when I was a boy. Still in my mind was the accusing tone and the unanswered question Kyle was about to ask. It seemed like torturous hours before I fell asleep. Morning came with the light so soft as it was filtered through the cabin ports. Unexpectedly Kyle turned and kissed me then pulled tight to me and was asleep again. I lie not moving just watching Kyle as he slept. I looked at Jake as he pretended to sleep but I had never seen anyone sleep with one eye open. It was apparent that Jake was doing the same thing as I, and was watching Justin as he slept. Neither of us wanted to move. I think Jake and I would have spent the day happily watching our boys sleep and not bothered to think of anything else. Suddenly it was over. How is it that both boys could open their eyes at the same time and exclaim . . . "French toast" in stereo! There was a mad dash for the head and as Justin and Kyle slid from beneath the covers they were naked. ..... Wait ..... they both turned tucked their heads under the covers and snatched their little boxers and were gone. Jake looked at me and I looked at him with puzzled looks on our faces but we both just let it go. My turn for breakfast and French toast it was. Like Liam, Justin was breaking eggs and Kyle was pouring OJ and setting the table. We had just finished breakfast when there was a knock on the side of the boat. It was two very handsome young men about 19 or 20. I can only describe them as a soft light chocolate color and so fit you would think they were Olympians. They said . . . "Morning sir we will have Jabbering shine as you never seen her before." Their smile said it all. We took another 30 minutes to be ready and were off to see the American Museum of Natural History located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. Now how lucky could we be one of the major programs we will see is "Swimming With Giants" https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/unseen-oceans We arrived at the museum and Jake and I had been thinking would the boys really enjoy this, well the expression on their faces said Yes! Jake asked Kyle and Justin are you guys ready to swim with some of the giants of the deep ocean and dive into and explore the world underwater and sample some of the wonders that we have seen on our trip? You know we are going to see whales, giant squid and probably a shark or two. There is no way to explain how excited Justin and Kyle were as we explored the swimming adventure. We had lunch and then it was on to "Dinosaurs" OMG the boys and Jake were thrilled, Ok me too. The dinosaur section is housed in a completely renovated space. The new gallery features installations of world-class dinosaur exhibits from the American Museum of Natural History including a full-size cast skeleton of the massive Tyrannosaurus rex, a stunning 60-foot-long metallic model of the long-necked Apatosaurus, and more, more and much more. Jake and I had to literally drag Kyle and Justin to the exit but not before stopping at the gift shop. The best thing at the gift shop was everything we bought were programs for the computer. On the way back to the boat we stopped at Casabianca Pizzeria for dinner and enjoy an Italian feast. We were stuffed when we arrived back at Jabbering. The boat looked as if it had just hit the water for the first time. Everything shined like it had never shined before. We were so pleased at what these two boys had done and would recommend them to any boaters staying here a day or two. Jake and I fixed a drink and sat in the cockpit while Kyle and Justin loaded programs in the computer. It was very quiet and Jake had really not said much all day, well come to think of it with the two boys jabbering constantly neither of us said much all day. I looked over at Jake and saw his head nod and gave a little jab to his side. He woke with a smile and said . . . "Kori, New York was a little much for me I'll be happy to be home." I winked at Jake and said . . . "Me too". Jake and I went to join the boys in the salon to see what exciting things they had on the computer. Oh well it's not just Jake and me that were tired as we found Justin and Kyle fast asleep. We pulled the boys up and got them washed and ready for bed opened their cabin door and they curled up on their bunks. We took one final look at the charts for tomorrow and the final leg of our trip from Ft. Lauderdale to Mystic and home. It was time to call it a night. Jake and I were so happy to close the cabin door and get some sleep. There was a chill and it felt good to pull the covers up tight. Jake had wrapped his arms around me and I felt all warm as my eyes closed. Of course there was the knock at the door. "Come in" . . . I said and they did. . . . Naked. . . . Shriving with little smiles as they in stereo asked . . . "can we get in with you, please?" Jake spoke before I had the chance . . . "Ok under the covers and make it quick". With Kyle wrapped in my arms and Justin wrapped in Jake's arms the two boys were now sandwiched between us and the chill had disappeared. All I can remember was going to sleep with a smile on my face. Morning came all too fast and there was no time for lying about. I shook Kyle and he grumbled; Jake tapped Justin on the nose and all 4 of us were up starting to get breakfast. Quick breakfast over we dressed in warm clothes and made ready the boat. It was just 7:30am when we released the dock lines and began to motor south on the Hudson River. The idea was to run down and circle around the Statue of Liberty and turn east and head for the East River. We would have to pass under a number of bridges and pass by Governors Island, Brooklyn, the famous Rikers Island and finally under Throgs Neck Bridge before reaching Long Island Sound. If the weather would hold and we get some wind we would make it to Port Jefferson on Long Island for our last night before pulling into Mystic. The weather was perfect with clear blue sky but only a slight breeze. The boys had their laptops and were telling us all about the Statue of Liberty. Kyle and Justin took turns telling the story and we had to listen. So please listen to the boys they worked hard to discover all this. Justin started . . . . "As Bartholdi envisioned it in 1874, the flame of the Statue's torch was not to be lighted but was to be made of solid copper sheet and gilded to shine brightly in daylight. But during its century of use, the torch underwent numerous modifications and when the Statue was dedicated in 1886, two rows of portholes had been cut from the copper at the bottom of the torch to illuminate it from inside, which permitted light to escape horizontally." Kyle took over the narration . . . "Six years later, a belt of glass, 18 inches high, replaced the upper row of portholes, and an octagonal, pyramidal skylight with red, white and yellow glass was installed on top of the flame. In 1916, copper was removed in about 250 places and was replaced by amber-colored cathedral glass, but the octagonal skylight was left intact." We had passed by the great lady and thank goodness a large school of fish appeared all around the boat and suddenly Kyle and Justin were glued to the event. We made our way to the East River and began our trip under the bridges and up past Rikers Island and that brought more description of the happenings there. Jake was just at the brink of laughter as he was watching my expressions. I think he must have been thinking of when I was 11 and 12 telling him all about this and that as we were on trips to Mystic, Newport, New Bedford. Now it was my turn to listen and sure enough Kyle started in with . . . "Hey Kori did you know?" and then my education of Rikers began .......... "Rikers Island is about 400 acres in the east river and it's between Queens and the Bronx. Whoa its home to New York City's main jail complex, `Hey' there it is and it's close to the runways of LaGuardia Airport. The island is home to one of the world's largest correctional institutions and mental institutions and has been described as New York's most famous jail." My turn Kyle as Justin jumped in . . . "Rikers has a reputation for abuse and neglect of inmates, attracting increased media and judicial scrutiny that has resulted in numerous rulings against the New York City government. ..... Jake are you listening? It is also notorious for numerous assaults by inmates on uniformed and civilian staff, resulting in often serious injuries." Wow Jake and I have learned quite a lot today and it's only noon. Jake took the boys to help with lunch as we had just passed under the Throgs Neck Bridge and entered the western most part of Long Island Sound. With just enough wind the sails were set and we were off for Port Jefferson for our final night on the boat. It was a great day with the boys and weather perfect. We made Port Jefferson at 5pm and were lucky to have a great spot to tie up. We changed quickly and ran to PJ's Lobster house for dinner. It was simple Jake and I had lobster and the boys had fish and chips and tonight Jake said Ok for the boys to have soda, now that is a real treat. Liam and I were not allowed soda but for very special occasions. Port Jefferson is a hidden treasure and Jake, me and the boys will be back several times during our summer adventures. Port Jefferson Harbor is one of the north shore's top destinations for boaters in the northeast and one of Long Island's two ports for access from Connecticut. The calm waters of the harbor along with a deep draft, provides transient boaters with easy access to many unique shops, specialty restaurants and year-round cultural activities, all within a short walk from the marina docks. We were tired from the day of motoring and sailing and wanted a good night sleep for our day trip into Mystic tomorrow. It was early to bed and early to rise maybe. We did get to bed early and the boys never bothered to open their cabin door so as you may have already guessed they were all cuddled up with Jake and me; cuddled up yes but in a very playful mood. There were hugs and tickles and a few little pecks on the cheek and nose and both Kyle and Justin were in the mood to tell Jake and me just how much they loved us. I think Kyle was over whatever was bothering him and I removed or moved his hand several times. With the amount of movement over there with Jake I think it was the same. The boys started giggling at just the same time. I asked Kyle . . . "Hey what are you two giggling about?" Kyle didn't have a chance to answer my question when Justin chimed in with . . . "Kyle said you got a stiffie but Jakes got one too so we all got stiffies." That was the end as hands got slapped and soon morning arrived. We released all lines and motored out to the sound and set sail for Mystic. We were sailing before breakfast and the boys went below and made cereal and toast and brought it topside for Jake and me. It was the most beautiful day and in just 8 hours we sailed up the Mystic River to our slip near the Charles W. Morgan. We were met by to happy and friendly friends Timmy and Chris who quickly had their hands full with Justin and Kyle. The boat was washed down and secured in no time and with our entire luggage loaded it was on the road for home. Jake and I would have to wait to tell Chris and Tim all about our trip that is what Kyle and Justin had forgot to tell. Jabbering by the "Twins" never stopped and Jake and I were so proud of the boys and their interest of everything we had seen and done. Storms, flat calm seas, dolphins, right whales, sand sharks off South Carolina, and almost eaten by a Great White. It was truly an adventure that we would never forget.
