Thank you jacoblion@tutanota.com . . . A Neglected Boy, "The Twins" XV . . . . Morning had arrived and for me it was that wonderful aroma of freshly brewed coffee that was pulling me from a warm and cozy bed. I heard the sounds of giggling so I knew the boys and Liam were up. Having learned my lesson years ago I pulled on my boxers and slowly opened the cabin door. Yep I was right almost. I was greeted by Liam, 2 boys with black hair and 1 boy with blond hair and blue eyes. The boy with blond hair and blue eyes had not one but 2 little rug-rats hanging on him as he smiled and said . . . "Good morning Jake I brought some blueberries for breakfast where's Kori?" . . . I smiled at this blond blue eyed boy and almost chuckled at how he said good morning, blueberries, where's Kori in one breath. I said . . . "Good morning Ethan; .... the blueberries look delicious, .... Kori is still in bed why don't you go wake him up I'm sure he will love it". Ethan had this very excited smile and as he started toward the cabin door with the boys right with him. I quickly snatched Kyle and Justin and said . . . "boys let's make a special breakfast for Kori and let Ethan wake him up this morning." Thank goodness Justin and Kyle agreed without an argument. The cabin door open and closed quietly, Liam just watched and smiled as Kyle, Justin and I made a special breakfast for Kori and Ethan. Ten or twelve minutes passed before the cabin door opened and a smiling Ethan and Kori appeared. I looked at their smiling faces and said . . . "Hey so nice to see smiling faces in the morning. Look at the special breakfast Justin and Kyle made for you guys." Ethan and Kori slid around behind the large salon table with Kyle and Justin on either side of Ethan, I almost thought the boys were going to spoon feed him. I thought maybe Ethan had today off and so I asked . . . "Ethan do you have today off and want to spend it with us we're going to hike part of the Island?" . . . . Ethan said . . . . "That sounds great but I have to work. I just wanted to say thanks for yesterday so I picked a basket of blueberries for you this morning, but I have tomorrow off if you'll still be here." Before I had the opportunity to answer the rug-rats jumped right in and in unison Said . . . . "Kori said we will be here two or three more days". Kori laughed and agreed. I have no idea how "The Twins" do that. It happens all the time if you ask then a question both Kyle and Justin answer in stereo. Ethan was all smiles finished his breakfast thanked us then headed back to Dead Eye Dick's. We all took those fast showers and changed to our hiking clothes and by 10am were off to explore parts of Block Island. http://www.blockislandchamber.com/ Our first job was to get ashore. Then once we were ashore we decided to rent a golf cart for the day and it was off for the first hike Mohegan bluffs. We arrived in only minutes and found we needed to keep a close eye on Justin and Kyle and sometimes Liam. This place is beautiful but somewhat dangerous for our livewire rug-rats. These breathtaking cliffs rise 200 feet above the ocean and distinctly mark almost 5 miles of Block Island's coastline. The boys were so excited and were thrilled to stand close to the edge facing into the mighty wind and listening to the relentless battering of waves rolling in off the ocean. We read that according to geologists Mohegan Bluffs are eroding at about five feet each year. Liam found a trail down to the shore but it was so steep that we had to hold tight to Kyle and Justin who were not about to let us leave till they had the opportunity to throw stones in the ocean. Now we had made the trek to the beach and now it was return to the top and explore the Southeast Lighthouse that was built in 1874. This time it was more like Kyle and Justin pulling Kori and me back to the top. The boys were all over the lighthouse with their endless energy. Their jabbering was continuous but very informative as we found out the historic lighthouse can be seen by ships 35 miles away. Then I found out as Kori informed me he already knew that. Next it was on to Clay Head Trail. We had no idea what we were in for and trying to keep up with the boys was a workout all on its own. We arrived at the northeast part of the island to what is actually a privately owned preserve. Immediately the scenery was spectacular and both Kyle and Justin were snapping photo after photo. Liam read that this preserve is protected by conservation easements. Then we learned it is one of the most amazing places to observe migratory songbirds. Now how did Kori, Liam and I find this out you ask . . . . Well it seems we have our own two tour guides and with their constant jabbering about this and that you really can't help not to learn a lot. We passed by a swamp with the Littlefield Farm in the background spotted the beach, oh yes the beach, and that is where we headed right after Justin and Kyle watered a few bushes. Once at the beach it was time to throw stones then Kori, Liam and I were led back up the trail and now were above the clay bluffs the area was named for. Now a major problem ........... we were on this trail heading away from the ocean and all of a sudden we were standing at like the trail head of a number of trails. Justin and Kyle were having a great time exploring but out of site. Liam found the sign that said "The Maze" OMG and I know your thinking just what I am about to say ........... They had disappeared in a heartbeat into the "Maze". These intertwining trails are unmarked and are perfect for hours of wandering. Well to be honest it wasn't hours but it was 90 minutes of twisting and turning and calling and reaching a dead end and back tracking and Kori was beginning to show signs of being alarmed. We heard the boys and then Liam in his most authoritive voice commanded Justin and Kyle to sit! .......... And not move another inch! It was only about another 5 minutes and we located the trouble twosome. We were now all frazzled and worn-out and famished. It was a 15 minute walk to the golf cart and on our way for a late lunch. We assured the boys they were Ok safe and not in any trouble but did ask that in the future maybe stay with us when in a strange place. We made our way to the Beachhead Restaurant and spent most of the afternoon eating appetizers and with Justin and Kyle playing games in the game room. Honestly we were all tuckered out. It was about 4 when the boys, rug-rats that is, challenged Kori, Liam and I to this pinball game called the wizard. Now Liam and Kori were in their element when it comes to games. The bet was on the boys get to have any dessert they want if they win and if Kori and Liam win the boys will do dishes for the remainder of the trip. Yep that was the bet. I was to watch for cheating. The game started ding, ding, wizzzzzz, boink poW and the score for rug-rats = 25,478. Liam and Kori started ........ ding, ding, ding wizzzzz dropped ball, score for big boys = 14,345 .......... Well you know what direction this is going. Final score rug-rats 1,456,984 ........ Big Boys Final score = 987,678 .......... We, that would be Liam, Kori and I, will never hear the end of this and rug-rats danced the dance of champions. We called for the Yacht Club launch to pick us up where we had rented the golf cart. It was only about 15 minutes and here is our blond, blue eye Ethan running the boat. He was all smiles as he returned us to Jabbering and as he shoved off he waved and said . . . "I'm off tomorrow I'll see you for breakfast." . . . The rug-rats were all smiles well I guess we all were. Tonight we were so tired that it was an early dinner and early bed too. I made a large fruit salad while Kori and Liam played monopoly with Kyle and Justin. After dinner we sat around the table and talked about our adventurous day. The boys liked standing on the cliff and lighthouse best. Soon eyes were getting heavy and it was off to bed. Liam had the bed to himself tonight as Justin and Kyle wanted to be with Kori and me. It was so nice to just crawl under the covers and snuggle with the boys. The day was so exhausting that I don't even remember saying goodnight to Kori or the boys. It was about 5am and Kori gently shook me. He pointed to the deck and made signs with his fingers telling me someone was onboard. I listened . ................. Sure enough someone was on deck. I slipped into shorts carefully and so very quietly stepped to the salon opened our security cabinet and reached for the 9mm pistol. There was no moon and the night was black and it was 4 steps up to the cockpit my heart pounding every step. I knew that it was on nights like this that people with large boats were robbed of expensive instruments. I slowly slid the hatch back and could just make out the outline of the intruder lying on the bench behind the wheel. My fear immediately vanished when I realized it was Ethan. I know I startled him when I said . . . "Ethan what are doing here in the middle of the night?" Ethan looked at me he was shivering dampened by the fog that had set in and said . . . "I just wanted to be with you and Kori and not alone. I'm sorry I woke you." I put my arm around him, he was freezing. . . . . . "Ethan let's get you below in dry clothes and warmed up." Kori was already in the salon and the boys were still sleeping. Kori looked as if this was some kind of dream then realized what was going on and got a set of jogging clothes for Ethan. A cup of hot tea and a blanket did the trick and Ethan had regained some color. Kori and I sat and listen to Ethan as he told us this was the most miserable summer he has ever had. Summers before he has had friends but this summer he was alone and had not been able to make any friends his age. To make matters worse he had to listen to the owner of Dead Eye Dick's talk about the fag waiters. It was hard for Kori and me to hear this because we knew exactly how Ethan felt. We pulled out extra blankets and two pillows and made the large couch in the salon into a bed so Ethan would be warm and comfortable for the rest of the night. He was exhausted and was fast asleep in seconds. Kori and I quietly slipped back into our cabin with Kyle and Justin who were somewhere in Neverland with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell. I think at this point Kori and I were emotionally tired and sleep came quick and so did the excitement of the boys in the morning when they discovered Ethan in the salon fast asleep. Justin and Kyle came back in our cabin and in excited whispers told Kori and me that Ethan was sleeping on the big couch. Kori that devil told the boys to be very quiet and go snuggle up to Ethan but don't wake him. Smiling ear to ear "The Twins" tiptoed and snuggled in with sleeping Ethan. Kori and I had maybe a few minutes to cuddle. Everything was quiet and for some reason there was this feeling of extreme excitement. It was almost an electric feeling as Kori and I were wrapped tightly around each other. I could feel Kori's hand slowly making its way from my chest slowly downward just as he had tried so many times when he was a kid. I stopped his advance and slid beneath the covers, in only a minute Kori tensed up arched back and it was over. We were again holding tight arms wrapped around each other and I was almost to the point of no return when a soft knock on the cabin door stopped anything further. We relaxed and I said . . . "Hello" . . . it was Liam, as I thought "great timing Liam" ...... Liam opened the cabin door slightly and said . . . "Good morning just thought you might want to take a peek at your crew?" Kori and I pulled on some fresh boxers and quietly stepped into the salon to see Justin and Kyle all cuddled up to Ethan and all 3 fast asleep. We took a few cute photos as Liam put the coffee on and started tea for Kori. It was just enough sound to wake our young crew. What we heard next was the same thing we used to hear from Liam. .... "I gotta pee" . . . and Kyle and Justin were off to the forward head. Ethan was sitting up and looking around like he was looking for something specific or how he was going to be next to go pee. We all realized there was just a slight problem and it wasn't about to go away until after he had the chance to pee. Kori pointed to our cabin and I opened the door and said . . . "Ethan it's much closer than the forward head and threw his now dry clothes to him. He smiled and holding his shorts and shirt in front of him quickly entered our cabin and I closed the door. A few minutes later Ethan reappeared and joined us for breakfast. He was dressed in his cargo shorts and a bright island t shirt and said he had folded the jogging suit we gave him last night and left it on the bed. Today it was Liam and Kori who made the breakfast and it was toast and cereal not the usual Kori breakfast like yesterday. You may think that is a light breakfast . . . well 10 slices of toast almost half a jar of peanut butter 5 bananas, OJ and almost half gallon of milk, not to mention the cereal. We had planned to hike more of the Island but today was perfect for sailing. Looking at our chart we decided to sail the 14 miles to Pt. Judith, Rhode Island visit the light house and Coast Guard station. Then on to find a good place for lunch then sail and fish on the way back to the Block. The plans delighted everyone and with all hands helping it was a fast 20 minutes till we released Jabbering from the mooring and motored out to Block Island Sound. Once Kori had us out in Block Island Sound everyone took turns at the helm. Obviously Kori, Liam and I had much time to visit and relax as Ethan kept Justin and Kyle occupied, I said that backwards, Justin and Kyle kept Ethan occupied. We really didn't need to set a course or engage the auto pilot as we could clearly see the Point Judith Lighthouse. It was amazing to watch all three boys handle the boat but Liam couldn't get over how Kyle and Justin could feel the wind and bring Jabbering to heel to either port or starboard till the sea water was running right to the gunwale. It was so obvious that the rug-rats had learned well on our voyage from Ft. Lauderdale to Mystic. Kyle had the helm and Justin and Ethan were watching dolphins play alongside https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOin_BBobp0 when Kyle hollered ........ "Jake -- Kori tighten the sheet" . . . wow . . . little bit of a captain there barking out orders. The wind had fallen off slightly and Kyle wasn't about to let the boat slow. It was Justin's turn and he simply slipped in front of Kyle and had the wheel. You know how sometimes "less is more" not today Justin is every bit as competitive at sailing as his twin brother. Kori and I felt the boat ease slightly more to the wind at just the right angel then we heard .......... "Liam and Ethan move I can't see, Kori two turns on the sheet" the boys had learned on the trip from Ft. Lauderdale that sometimes you just bark out the orders. There was a surprised look on his brother's face as we gained almost 2 knots more. Ethan was now over with Liam, Kori and I and wanted to know how Kyle and Justin learned to sail like this. Kori laughed and told Ethan the story of the adventure bringing Jabbering home from Florida. Soon we were at the point that Kori had to take the boat and bring us into the dock at Point Judith and this area can be very, very dangerous. The boat was docked and we were off for a hike and to investigate the lighthouse. Now you know like Kori, Justin and Kyle are history and science experts. So here we go. The boys, all 3, read every word and memorized as they read and now Kori, Liam and I get the benefit of lectures. We were soon to find out that Point Judith protrudes over a mile into the Atlantic Ocean. Heavy seas and dense fog, like last night, frequent the point and the nearby dangerous shoals. We reached the lighthouse and as the boys explored we did get a break from the constant chatter and asking if we were listening. But then we had to learn all about the lighthouse. To be honest the boys were very good and we did learn a thing or two. It seems that the lighthouse which is an octagonal brick building and built in 1816 was maintained during the Revolution after the original wooden lighthouse, built in 1806, was blown down in the Great Gale of September 1815. Now here is the most interesting thing that really got the boys excited ..... the last German U-Boat sunk in World War II was just two miles off the light. What was the next thing we heard ....... Well ... "I'm hungry ....... We all were and it was off to Aunt Carrie's clam shack for one of the best and may I say huge lunches we have ever had. Next . . . .
