"Damn Kori start the engine" I turned the key and the diesel engine woke with a roar. I engaged the lever forward and set the throttle to full speed ahead. We could see the Great White now about a football field in length off our starboard beam as it made a turn toward us again. In the dead calm water Jabbering was now making good speed and we could see the dorsal fin of the Great White as it slipped beneath the water. Jake had armed the signal pistol if needed. We waited. Jake and I took the boys and sat with them in the cockpit as we motored north. Carefully Jake explained our encounter with the Great White. I listened to Jake and thought of how he would explain dangerous things to me and Liam when we were just 9 and 11. Always the point was to understand the danger but not to terrify especially when Ning was around. Kyle, and Justin listened to every word Jake said there was a mood of caution but not terror. Kyle and Justin understood the danger but now seemed more interested in learning everything they could about sharks and the Great White in particular. As we continued to motor north toward New York the weather changed and the wind freshened and we set almost all sail. I remained at the helm most of the day and Jake continued to work with Justin and Kyle with reading, math and whale and shark research. Jake and the boys relieved me and I went below to make dinner and a break from the helm. We were now making good time and fortunately other things have remained quiet. As dinner was getting ready I sat at our navigation station and re-plotted our course making only a minor change. I had showed Kyle and Justin how to engage the auto pilot and had the boys join me as and went over it one more time. No need they were right on and I let them turn on the auto pilot and check it twice. Time for dinner. Jake was now at the stove with the boys helping and it was Spaghetti with meat sauce and meatballs, parmesan cheese and of course garlic bread. Jake saw me smiling and knew I was thinking of Peter. Oh how Peter loved garlic bread now that I think of it so did Ning. I was watching the boys with Jake and thought of the time Jonah and his crew came to visit while Jonah worked on his project with that company in Boston. Well there was a house full, seriously, there was Jonah, Simon, Peter, (we called Pete), Luke and Sammy now add me, Liam, Jake, Neil, Peter, Professor, Ian, Ning, Garret, Riku, Christopher .... Holy mackerel can you imagine how much spaghetti Jake, Neil and I cooked? Now you imagined the spaghetti well think about the Garlic bread, Liam made the garlic bread and lots of it, most of it made its way to the table when we could get it by Peter. Jabbering was right on course as I checked her just before Jake set my plate of spaghetti and 3 pieces of garlic bread. I was telling the boys if the wind remains in our favor we will be in New York in just over 2 days. I looked over at Jake and asked for a little more tea and when I turned back there was only 1 piece of garlic bread on my plate but two kids with impish smiles. Justin and Kyle were sitting between me and Jake. Kyle tapped me on the shoulder and as I bent to let him whisper in my ear I saw this hand slyly trying to get my last and only piece of garlic bread. In a flash I reached up and smacked his hand the result was not really what I intended. Jake was in a fit of laughter as Justin was covered in spaghetti and sauce from hand to elbow and little red dots all over his face. Jake and I could have been angry at the mess and we did have some cleaning that needed to be done, but I have learned to love and enjoy the never ending surprises of these two little Asian boys. I know I have a lot to learn but Jake is always there to help point me in the right direction. Perhaps it was Jakes immediate laughter at my unintended result that showed me that two mistakes had happened. One Justin trying procure my garlic bread and two my reaction. I guess I could have just growled at Justin and made my point. For the next 50 hours Jake and I took turns with 3 hour watches. I think it was the best part of our adventure. During the daylight hours we worked with Justin and Kyle reading searching about things on the computer or working out math problems. At night both Jake and I would take turns snuggling up to the boys for 3 hours at a time. Now I am not sure I should say this but cuddling up to 9 year old Asian boys can be an adventure in itself. I said that all wrong because at one point Jake reminded me of my little adventures when we were on that trip to New Haven and Yale. My hand wandered at times as he politely reminded me, but with Justin and Kyle it's not one hand it's four hands. At only 9 these two are curious, tough at times and damn persistent but also so loveable too. Go figure. The weather had turned cold and the wind was with us but chilling. Jake and I were quiet and said nothing and were waiting for the boys to notice what was beginning to appear on the horizon. It was just about 3pm when Justin and Kyle became excited and told Jake and I that there was land ahead. We had indeed begun to see New York and minute by minute the skyline of New York City came into view. The boys were so excited; no that's not true we were all excited. We made our way up the Hudson River to the 79th Street and the 79th Street Boat Basin. We had made reservations and were very lucky to have an end spot that just made it so convenient for us. The boys had spent the day making a list of places to see, well we will see as much as we can but their list was good for about two weeks. One thing for sure was the bus tour, the Statue of Liberty, Empire State building, New York pizza well I guess that's more than one thing. We were now all tied up and shore power was on and Kyle and Justin wanted to get on the dock. Jake said Ok but to be careful not to fall. In return we heard Justin and Kyle . . . "yeah, yeah we're not babies." Jake and I stood right there as Kyle and Justin stepped on the dock. It was a funny sight to watch those two boys as they tried to walk a straight line. They both looked very drunk. Now the boys' having been on the boat for several days and being a sailboat even worse; as Jabbering for the last 50 hours has been leaning quite a bit. Well your balance is off and you're used to the boats movement and now you're standing on a non-moving object. Jake and I watched as both boys were leaning and couldn't walk a straight line. Finally Justin sat down and Kyle went to help him up but ended up falling down laughing. It took a few minutes before the boys were on their feet again but the laughing continued for minutes more. When we were all vertically stable we secured the boat locked the cabin and headed for the city. We found the best place for a real dinner, that would be pizza, and in we went to Saba's Pizza and close to 79th Street Boat basin. We had our fill and started with antipasti and then a pepperoni pizza that was very good and spumoni to end. Having been on the boat for all this time we decided to walk back to Jabbering. It was quick showers and bed. The boys were in their cabin and Jake and I had just settled down for a good night sleep and perhaps, well you know. Kyle knocked on our cabin door to say Justin was sick. Jake thought it was a combination of pizza and having been on the boat for several days. Our first night at the dock Jake was curled up to Justin and me with Kyle. Honestly it was just about the most perfect night you could ask for. I thought of 20 years past as I moved, then moved again, and removed Kyle's hand. I'm not sure he was even conscious but I do know he likes my belly button and sometimes will say . . . "Kori if I push on this what will pop up?" I can see the devil in him. We are all looking forward to tomorrow and New York City .......... . . . Next . . . .
