Haiku are a very short form of Japanese poetry. They are typically characterised by three qualities:
1. Traditional haiku consist of 17 words or syllables, in three phrases of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively,
2. The essence of haiku is "cutting". This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a kireji ("cutting word") between them.
3. A kigo (seasonal or natural reference).
Modern Japanese haiku are increasingly unlikely to follow the tradition of 17 syllables or to take nature as their subject, but the use of juxtaposition continues to be honoured in both traditional and modern haiku. There is a common perception that the images juxtaposed must be directly observed everyday objects or occurrences. In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed in a single vertical line while haiku in English often appear in three lines to parallel the three phrases of Japanese haiku. In this collection of short poems, I use the traditional haiku form to explore aspects of the youthful male. The themes include desire, lust, intimacy, sex and love. The shortness of the verse means that the reader is free to interpret and imagine what the words convey to you personally. Each reader's perception will be different. I have added a selection of photo images to further stimulate your imagination!
you pass on the street
my
eyes devour your beauty
feed
the night-time lust
cute angelic face
slender ripe peach-skinned physique
a bud bursting forth
smooth innocent boy
brief moments of puberty
reveals potent male
my eyes follow him
the others quite unaware
teenage perfection
from behind, a wand,
slim rounded graceful litheness
draws the mind onwards
climbing from the pool
speedo outline on display
always wanting more
stretch navy spandex
reveals outline and bulges
holds my attention
flesh growing daily
brief moment of transition
all newly excited
no longer a boy
fleeting moments to savour
not yet mature male
diver stands on high
my eyes admire his physique
assessing every curve
diver down below
muscles releasing effort
tension past for now
diver climbs ashore
adjusting front and rear
checking all intact
