Uncle Ray had made reservations for a half-day run down the Nantahala River. The rapids were Class II and Class III with a couple of Class IV drops along the way. Now, at this point I really had no idea what all this meant, but it sounded exciting and I was excited. I wasn't supposed to eat much for breakfast because there wouldn't be any bathrooms along the way. We did pack some extra snacks and drinks in a small cooler Uncle Ray picked up at the grocery on Thursday. A gym bag was packed with dry clothes to change into at the end of the trip. Uncle Ray packed a pair of jeans and shirt while I just packed the other pair of modified jogging shorts plus towels; I was hoping for a souvenir shirt from the trip so I didn't bother packing an extra. We both took sneakers since we planned on wearing water shoes on the trip. About the time we were ready to leave there was a knock on the door. I looked at Uncle Ray and he just smiled. "You wanted to know what was going on, open the door." When I opened the door there was Jesse and his dad. "Hey, Brad, guess what? Dad and I are going rafting with you and your uncle. How's that?" I looked at Uncle Ray and beamed "Cool and double cool. Let's go." Jesse and I left for the car. We exchanged a few words and I ran back to the room, telling Uncle Ray I forgot something, then was off to the car again. Turns out that while Jesse and I had been down in the river on Friday, Uncle Ray and Jesse's dad talked and thought it would be fun for all of us to go rafting together. The thumbs up sign I had seen was to let Uncle Ray know Jesse's dad was able to get the tickets on our same trip. "Ray, how long do you think it will take them to realize we're not behind them?" "Probably about the time they decide their hungry again. I think they just retreated to kids world and left us behind, Jack. Is Marge coming with us?" "No, she thought this might be better as a day for the guys. This way the boys don't have to worry too much about saying or doing the wrong thing in front of her. She did want me to ask you though about maybe doing a little cook out on the island for supper tonight. While we're gone she'll head to the store for the goods and start preparing the food. What do you say, you and Brad interested?" "With food, Brad's always interested. With good company, I'm always interested. However, you have to let me chip in for some of the goods, okay?" "Fair enough. Oh, do you drink beer, what brand?" "Any brand you choose, but I prefer a light beer; I'm getting to the age where it's too easy to start spreading out at the equator." "Good, I'll tell Marge on our way down. Speaking of which...." "Jack, there is one thing. We were out late last night and I know the boys will want to play in the river when we get back. Brad can get a little testy when he gets too tired so if we do a cookout tonight, I'd like for him to take a shot nap when we get back." "Jesse's the same way, though he won't admit it. That'll make it easier for me to get him down, too." Seems like we had to drive forever to reach the rafting place. I thought it would be on the river, but it was on the side of the mountain. As we pulled into the parking area there were at least a half dozen school buses lined up. Turns out the owners also ran the local school bus service for the county and used the same buses to transport us to the launch site. Once we checked in we were told the water would be cold and if we wanted a rubber suit, pick one out -- no way. The bus was full and the rafts transported in a separate truck. We passed an old narrow gauge steam engine pulling several cars with people. The train ran along the river and would stop at the same launch point. At the launch point the guides unloaded the rafts. The rafts looked similar to those you see commandos use in the movies except these were blue instead of camouflage. A guide was placed in every third raft; Uncle Ray had made arrangements for us to be in one of those. As it turned out our guide was the leader of the group. His name was Josh, a nineteen year old college student working for the summer. He was real nice and didn't seem to mind kids. Uncle Ray, me, Jesse and his dad were all going to be in Josh's raft -- this was cool. Jesse and I thought it was good when all the adults had to pick up the raft and carry it about one hundred feet to the launching area; we just followed and horsed around. The raft was designed to hold eight people plus the guide. You sat on the side of the raft and hooked your feet below the inflated cross-member in front of you. The idea was as the raft was tossed around in the water you used your leg strength to keep from falling out. The river wasn't deep, but it was cold. When we loaded up Josh put me and Jesse in the back. He sat in the middle with Jesse to his left and me to his right. Uncle Ray and Jesse's dad sat in front of us. We had these huge life jackets on, Josh said we would have to work at drowning. If we fell off just relax and the jacket would float us down to the end; yeah, through the rocks, rapids and whirlpools. This was really exciting and Jesse and I could hardly contain ourselves; we had seen Uncle Ray and Jesse's dad talking to Josh and knew they arranged for us to sit this way. Who would want to be up front where it was dull? We were the first raft to launch but the last to leave. Josh said he had to keep the other rafts in front so he could spot anyone that may fall out or help a raft that may get stuck. It didn't take long for Jesse and me to start getting into a little mischief; now Uncle Ray knew there was no way we would do something like this without stirring a little something up. The first couple of times I poured cold water down Uncle Ray's back he didn't say anything, but I could see him look over to Jesse's dad. Then the next time he turned around and held up one finger. I looked at the finger and then he made sure Jesse saw it. "Do you boys know what this means?" I had a pretty good idea since he had done this to me before, but poor Jesse just sat there looking dumbfounded. "Think of baseball, what happens after three strikes?" Jesse told him "You're out." "Close; this means three strikes and both of you boys are out." As he said this he made a motion with the pointed finger from us to outside the raft. Jesse looked at his dad like he expected his dad to say something. His dad just shrugged his shoulders, telling him he had been warned, and turned around. Now, the challenge was to make sure we got to the three strikes before we finished the trip. Uncle Ray said that when we got to three both of us were out, he didn't say the one that got us to three would be out and the other okay. Of course, if I had thought about it I would have realized there was no way we were gong to finish the trip without getting to three, Uncle Ray and Jesse's dad would make sure of that. Josh was really good to us. As we followed the other rafts, if one was stuck on a rock he would have us paddle real fast to get up speed and then ram them. This was better than bumpem cars at the fair. He made sure we took the exciting part of the drop on a rapid and not the smooth part. A couple of times he spotted a whirlpool and led us directly into it, directing the raft so we would spin around a couple of times before the current pulled us out. No one fell out of our raft, but they did on some of the others. Josh would call out instructions so they could get back in and we would move on. Shortly before we got to the end we made it to number three. I had already gotten number one, Jesse got number two, and I think Uncle Ray heard me whisper (?) a four letter word that earned number three, but then nothing happened. At nine, you don't pick up on the subtle adult communications. I remember Josh leaning forward and clearing his throat. Right after that Uncle Ray grabbed my right ankle and Jesse's dad grabbed his left ankle, Josh then grabbed the inside ankles and next thing Jesse and I knew we were upside down. Both of us screamed and laughed so hard they could probably hear us back at the launch site. I laughed so hard I actually peed in my pants. Then they let us go and we were in the water. Uncle Ray later explained the throat clearing was a signal to them that we were in deep enough water they could drop us without fear of hitting the bottom. We came up in shock, I don't know if it was from what they did or from how cold the water was; regardless, we loved it. We floated back to the raft and they hauled us in, that's when it really felt cold. We didn't go much further when we hit the last big rapid and then were landing the raft. As we got out we turned in our life vests and I started to shiver. Uncle Ray took my shirt and wrung out a lot of the water; Jesse's dad did the same for him. We got on the bus to make the trip back to the rafting base. I sat between Uncle Ray's legs with his arms wrapped around me. I just wanted to get back and find dry clothes. Even in August that water was unbelievable. Josh approached us on the bus. "Don't get upset with me guys. Your dads are the ones who arranged the whole dunking thing. Besides, you both were wanting it." I looked at him with a frown but couldn't hold it. I broke into a smile and hugged him, looking up, "Thanks for a great trip." When we got back Uncle Ray retrieved our bag of clothes. He and Jesse's dad just changed into dry clothes. There was only one shower stall open but they didn't care. Jesse and I were pushed into the one stall and Uncle Ray turned on the warm water. We were told to stay there until we got good and warm -- no colds needed. Of course, being boys, we horsed around getting a mouthful of water and spitting it at one another. Once we decided we were warm enough and before we thought someone would come looking for us we dried off and put on dry clothes. Funny, no one else was there, everybody had left; wonder how long we were really in there? You should have seen the look on their faces when Uncle Ray and Jesse's dad saw us come running out wearing the jogging shorts I had modified. I had the ones with no liner and Jesse had the others. That's all we were wearing, too, except I did have my raw ruby necklace. After the initial look of surprise I heard Uncle Ray ask Jesse's dad if they should claim the almost naked twins. We weren't naked, we each had on a pair of shorts, what else do boys need? When we headed to the car we discovered the mistake of not putting on shoes; those rocks hurt. Uncle Ray threw me over his shoulder giving me a love pop on the butt in the process. Jesse's dad did the same to him. I looked over at Jesse and laughed at how much of his bare butt was sticking out of the shorts. On the way back in the car he told me how much of my butt was exposed (oops!). On the way back we stopped at the Indian village, I knew it was for my choker. When we stopped I started to get out but Uncle Ray told me to stay put. That was not a good sign for when we got back, I could see trouble coming. He returned with the choker made for me and tied it on before we left. He made some comment about the choker might be a good idea. After leaving he and Jesse's dad started in about us getting a nap; an idea we both objected to. Uncle Ray tried persuading us it was the thing to do and then re-stated his position. "Brad, let me put it this way. When we get back you will, I repeat will, lie down for about an hour and at least rest. Then you may get up and you and Jesse can go play some more. I am not going to risk you getting overly tired before tonight and then me having to correct you for some dumb stunt and ruin everyone's evening." "Yes, sir." I wondered to myself what he meant by 'everyone's evening'. The words and tone said there was no chance of talking my way out of this one. Then Jesse's dad said the same thing to him and he also knew better than to argue. When we got back to the motel we headed straight to the room. I put my things down and didn't even try to play games with Uncle Ray. I just plopped down on the bed for a quick nap or 'rest' as he put it. What surprised him was when Jesse followed me in and plopped down with me. "Now, what makes you two think this is going to work? We said we wanted you to get some rest, remember, not play?" "Uncle Ray, we will, promise, we'll rest. Can't we just stay here? We won't play." I said this in the most pleading voice I knew and gave him the pleading expression that usually worked. Jesse gave the same look to his dad. The two men looked at one another and I knew we were going to win this one, sort of. Uncle Ray walked over and sat next to me and gently rubbed my back. "All right, we'll leave you like this for now, but the door stays open. Jack and I are going to go help Marge prepare for tonight's cookout ..." two boys got surprised looks on their faces, "..oh, did we forget to tell you? We're all doing a cook out on the island for supper. We'll be back in a few minutes to check on you. If we hear the slightest peep from either of you, you're going to be separated. Understand?" "Yes, sir." Regardless of how we giggled at first, I think we were both out of it in five minutes. After a little more than an hour I was aware of Uncle Ray's voice and someone else. I got off the bed in one of those asleep but not asleep modes and managed to stagger my way to him. Climbing up on his lap and I let my head fall against his shoulder. He reached down and cupped my butt to support me. He and Jesse's parents had been sitting out here drinking a couple of beers while we napped. Jesse came out right behind me and did the same to his dad. "Hey sleepyhead, you sure you're ready to get up?" "nooo..." as I shook my head. I turned my head in the other direction and could see Jesse, he could see me. "Ray, I don't think this one's any better off. Think we should put them back?" "noooo...' I repeated. "just rub me for a few minutes." "Jack, does Jesse demand as much attention as this one?" "More, sometimes." "Marge, you see the way they're dressed? We called them the almost naked twins as we left the rafting office. When we tossed them up on our shoulders to carry them to the car just about their whole rearends were out for everyone to admire." As Uncle Ray said this he lifted the back of my shorts to show Jesse's mom my bare butt. Jesse's dad did the same. "Heeyyyy, don't do that." "Why? The two of you were showing them to everyone else." "That's different." I could see Jesse smiling and he could see me. We knew the way the grownups were talking that we weren't in any trouble. Of course, Jesse had already told me he ran around his house and yard naked most of the time and figured the same out about me -- the lack of tan lines gave it away. Somehow, looking at one another Jesse and I were able to communicate the same thoughts. I saw a Frisbee on the table and using my eyes to get Jesse to look over, he saw it too. "When are we going over to the park?" "It's early for supper. Why go now?" "Jesse and I want to play in the river some, and besides, somebody got a Frisbee." I said this as I reached for the Frisbee. "Okay, guess we can make it over there. The two of you wait a minute and you can help carry stuff over. The two of you going to change into something else first?" "Why? You've already shown everybody our butts. What does it matter now?" It was a great late afternoon and evening. Uncle Ray, Jesse, his dad and me tossed the Frisbee around for quite a while. They cooked hamburgers with the normal trimmings and Jesse and I both ate till we were gonna pop. When somebody said it was time to go in Jesse and I didn't want to, we both knew his family was leaving tomorrow and we wanted more time. Jesse's dad said they worked it out so they would check out of the room, but not leave for home until mid-afternoon. When we got back to the room Uncle Ray took a quick shower. I just dropped the shorts and climbed into bed. I was tired but I wasn't at the same time. Uncle Ray said it was because I was too keyed up from a big day. He pulled me up close and gently rubbed my stomach and shoulders. Occasionally, he ran his fingers through my hair. I'm not sure when I fell asleep, but it didn't take long. He always knew how to make me relax and fall asleep. The next morning he let me sleep in some. I was upset because I wanted as much time as I could get with Jesse, but he slept in too. We did get time to go tubing in the river a couple of times, throw the frisbee some and play in the river. About mid- afternoon it was time for the goodbyes. It had really been a great weekend. When they were gone I reached up for Uncle Ray. He picked me up and made the little seat with his interlocking fingers. I gave him a big hug and thanked him for a great weekend, especially taking the time with me and Jesse to play. (The memory of this weekend has always been one of my favorite.) "Your welcome son, I'm glad you were able to find someone to play with. You spent enough time around adults this summer, you needed some kid time. Now what?" "Let's go inside for a while." When he got that look of 'what are you up to' on his face I reached around and gave him a raspberry on the side of his neck. "Horny toad." End chapter Eight.
