Chapter 16 – Tom

"Privately?" he added.

"Sure thing, after what you did for me earlier, I owe you. Let make sure the boys are okay and we'll go to the study, okay?"

I went to T.J. and Mike's room where the boys were still sorting stuff. "Are you four doing okay? You got enough to keep yourselves busy a while longer?"

"Yeah, we're great, Max," Joey answered. "We're having a blast."

"We got a lot to dig though, too," added Alex.

"Good, Tom wants to talk to me about something so he and I are going to the study. If you need anything, come knock on the door."

"Will do, Max," answered T.J.

I headed back to the living room, "Let's go Tom." Tom followed me to the study and after we entered, I closed the door. "Okay, what's on your mind. You seemed pretty to be in pretty deep thought out there."

"Can I ask you a personal question, Max?"

"Well, you can sure ask, but that doesn't mean I'll answer it."

"Fair enough," Tom replied. "I was wondering, how did, I mean, when, uh... Oh, hell, I don't think I wanna do this now."

"Spit it out, Tom. Whatever it is, it can't be that bad."

"Okay, just know I'm not real comfortable with this. What I want to know is, I guess, is how long did it take you to get so comfortable with being who you are."

"What, the fame and fortune thing?"

"No, Max, the being gay thing?"

"Oh, that."

"Yeah, that."

"It wasn't easy, let me tell you. I've told you how I've lived out here 12 years, alone, writing my last three books. What I didn't tell you about is the amount of time I spent those 12 years self-analyzing. It wasn't until just recently that I came to understand myself to the point that I was finally willing to accept I'm homosexual."

"12 years? That long? Damn, how'd you do it?"

"Very slowly, obviously."

"Well, when did you first think you might be?"

"I was about seven or eight when I first realized I was different from most of the other boys I knew. When they started talking about girls and things, I was still thinking about my friend David's body and how I'd like to know that body much better than I did. I suppressed all those feelings for an awful long time and finally realized it was killing me. I mean, here I am successful author, nice house, money, whatever I could want except for what my heart wanted. I guess I've finally decided to let my heart have a say in how I live the rest of my life."

"Yeah, that sounds about right."

"What do you mean, Tom?"

"That's about when it happened with me, too. I guess I was ten or eleven, so a little later than you, but not by much."

"Wait, are you telling you're gay, too."

"I guess I am. I've hidden that side of myself, I thought pretty well. Until this afternoon."

"How so, Tom, what happened today that changed your mindset?"

"First, it was dealing with those sanctimonious, uptight assholes, the Mueller's. I mean, I knew you were gay because Carol told me when she called about being there today to help, but seeing the shit they put you through, for no reason except for you being who you are, it really pissed me off. And you stood up to them. You were way more polite than they deserved. And then, with what my sergeant said, I guess that kind of finished it off for me."

"Dylan? What'd he say?"

"He told me he knew I was gay from the moment he hired me. I guess I haven't been as successful at hiding it as I thought I was. Being a gay cop is tough, dealing with the bullshit from the other guys on the force if they knew, I just didn't want to deal with it, so I buried it. If they knew about it, they'd make my life a living hell."

"Well, Tom, you're secret's safe with me. It' not like I'm going to run around town telling everybody I see that Deputy Tom Wright of the Sangamon County Sherriff's department is a flaming fag."

"God, I hope not. I'd have to bury your body among all those trees out there." I had to laugh at that. "No, seriously Max, how should I handle this?"

"Just be who you are. If somebody asks, tell the truth. I haven't told many people about myself, but the ones I have don't seems to care, except, of course, the Mueller's, and I don't give a shit what they think. In the grand scheme of my life, they mean nothing."

"Just be myself. Yeah, right."

"I know, Tom, it's a whole lot easier saying it than doing it. But let me tell you, once you start living your life that way, there's no turning back the clock."

"I know, I guess that's why I keep hiding behind the uniform. It's easier to deny it."

"I wish I could have accepted it long ago, then I could have started on a family much earlier. Better late than never, I guess."

"Thanks, Max. I'm feeling better about things now."

"Is there anything else you wanted to talk about?"

"Yeah, but not yet."

"Oh, hell, Tom, you've already dropped a huge bomb, get it over with and move one."

"I guess I have, haven't I. Okay, here goes. You remember those not so subtle comments I made during the nickel tour about being able to getting used to living here, you adopting me, and so on?"

"Yeah, that was pretty funny."

"I hope the others thought so, too, but, deep down, I was kind of being serious."

"Wait a minute, Tom, what are you really saying."

"I guess I'm saying I'm attracted to you. And I think I'd like to get know you better, much better."

"Whoa, hold it right there," I started, but Tom interrupted.

"I knew it, damn it, I went too fucking far. Son-of-a-bitch. Okay, Max, I'll be going now."

"Sit your ass back down, Tom, you're not dropping a bomb like that and running away from it. Let me finish what I was going to say." He returned to his chair and I continued, "I know we just met this afternoon, under less than ideal circumstances, but when I said that I thought we could be great friends, I meant it, 100%."

"What, you really meant that?"

"I sure did. Obviously, I didn't know you were gay when I said it, but that doesn't change how I feel. I think we truly could be great friends, but we need to take it a day at a time and see how things go. I've got a lot of changes happening in my life right now and I need to really think hard about it before I add anything else to the mix right now."

"So, you're saying not now, but someday, maybe, right?"

"Exactly. I need to think about what's best for the boys first, before I try to add to that. At least for a while. I really would like to know you better, but you have to give me some time, Tom. Plus, you need to know what you'd be getting yourself into."

"What do you mean, Max?"

"You remember that comment from Frank this afternoon about getting any trace of `those little bastard pervert faggots' out of their home."

"Yeah, what about it?"

"Well, that comes from something the twins said last night at Steak `n Shake. The boys told the Mueller's that they weren't going with them and they were going with me because they're gay, too. In fact, they said it loud enough, they pretty much told everybody there. Then, last night, after they'd been here less than five hours, I caught them in their bedroom, giving each other a mutual blowjob. It was pretty obvious, even to me, it wasn't their first time. When I told them it was time to go sleep, you want to know what they said to me?"

"Probably not, but tell me anyway."

"They begged for a few more minutes as they were almost `there'. Then, they added I could either wait or join them."

"You're shittin' me!"

"Not a bit, Tom. And there's more you need to know."

"Now, I know you're shittin' me. What more could there possibly be?"

"Not at all, Tom. T.J., so I've been told, was caught at his school giving a blowjob to another boy in the bathroom and he was moved to a new foster home and school as a result." Tom's eyes grew wide with surprise. "Wait, there's more. Mike was removed from his parents because he was being severely abused. You wanna guess why?"

"Not really, but you're gonna' tell me anyway, aren't you?"

"He liked to play dress-up with his mom's things and his parents didn't like it so they tried to beat it out of him. How do think that would have turned out for Mike?"

"He'd probably end up dead with his parents rotting in jail for the rest of their lives."

"Exactly. Those four boys were placed with me because I'm gay and they all four have shown they are most likely gay, too, either through what they've said or done. Carol has been looking for a good home or homes for all four of them for quite a while and when I showed up at the agency's doorstep, it was like her prayers had been answered. She couldn't believe her luck when she found out who I was."

"Unbelievable. So, you've gone from a confused single guy to being a gay father of four possibly gay boys in the space of what, two, three months?"

"Precisely. Can you now see why I need to take things a little slower and see how life shakes out? I'm dead serious about getting to know you better, but I just need to take it slowly. And you need to know what you're getting yourself into. Are you willing to give me some time to sort things out?"

"Yeah, I guess. I'm not going anywhere."

"Thanks, Tom, I appreciate you're understanding." I stood up, walked to his chair and held my arms out. Tom slowly stood up and we wrapped our arms around each other in a warm embrace. At that moment, there was light tapping on the door and it popped open. I turned to see four pairs of eyes looking at the two of us and heard lots of giggling.

"See," Alex said, "I told you guys the cop was gay."

"And I told you he had the hots for Max," Joey added.

Tom and I guiltily broke our embrace. "Boys, come here. How long have you been listening at the door?"

"Um, the whole time," Alex mumbled.

"We're sorry, Max," added T.J. "We know we shouldn't have, but we couldn't help it. Please don't send us back," he cried.

"I'm not sending you anywhere. But you all need to understand what privacy is and you have to respect peoples' need for it. When a door is closed, you knock on it and wait for a response before you just come on in."

"Yes, sir," they all mumbled.

"Well, since it seems you've heard everything we had to say to each other, what do you have to say about it?"

"I think it's great, Max, you guys look good together," Joey said.

"Yeah, you deserve to have someone to love, like Joey and I do," added Alex.

"T.J., Mike?"

T.J. answered, "I like Tom. He seems like a nice guy, for a cop.".

"Nice to know I have your approval, T.J.," Tom chuckled. "And Mike?"

"I don't know. I guess if you two like each other, that's all that matters."

"Well, boys, it's not all that matters, but yeah, it's a big step in the right direction. It also matters how you guys feel about Tom and me getting to know each other better. You four have just moved in and I don't want to do anything you're not okay with. I have to think about what's best for you and not just myself."

"I think I can say for all us, Max, that we'd be good with it," Joey answered. "Tom proved he's a good guy when he stood up to those assholes we lived with."

"Yeah," added Alex, "we always wanted to do it, but knew if we did, they'd probably kick us out. Then, we'd probably end up getting separated and we weren't gonna' let that happen."

"Does anybody besides me need a snack or drink? I'm thirsty and we can continue this discussion in the kitchen."

"Yeah," chorused four boys and Tom added, "I could sure use a drink. A hard one if you've got any."

"The hardest thing I have is some Corona, but no limes."

"I'll take it," he said as we all headed to the kitchen.

I got the boys set with their milk and cookies and grabbed a Corona for Tom and me. The boys sat at the counter on the stools while Tom and I stood on the other side of the counter.

"Okay, guys, here's what we'll do. Tom and I will spend some time getting to know each other better while the five of us do the same. I'm sure Tom will be spending some of his spare time around here, are you cool with that?"

"Yeah, that's fine, Max."

"Okay with you, Tom?"

"You bet."

"Good. Now, if a door is closed, you will knock and wait for an answer before opening the door. If a door is open, we'll assume we're welcome to come in without knocking. Does that sound reasonable?"

"Yep, what's next?"

"If you ever want to talk about anything, and I mean anything, you come to me and ask. No subject is off-limits. If you want to talk alone, we'll talk alone, if you want a group chat, we'll do that. Anything else you want to know about right now?"

The boys looked at each other and broke into wide grins. Alex said, "We all want to know about one more thing, but they're too chicken to ask, so they told me I have to."

I had a feeling of what was coming, but it was too late to stop since I'd already said no subject was off-limits. "And what's that, Alex? It is Alex and not Joey, right? I'm not sure since you're both dressed." Tom raised his eyebrows and gave me an odd look.

"Of course, it is. Last night, you said that when we were out in this part of the house, we should be wearing something, even if it was just underwear, especially when other people were here. Is Tom `other people' or is he one of us now?"

Tom spewed Corona all over the counter when he heard the question. I just rolled my eyes, shrugged and answered, "I guess we should ask Tom and see what he says." I turned to him and asked, "So, Tom, are you `other people' or are you `one of us'?"

"I guess that all depends on what you're talking about, Max. You want to give me a few details before I answer?"

"Even the boys don't know this yet, but, for the last 12 years I've lived here, I have rarely worn clothes." Five sets of eyes opened wide at that statement. "I know, but I lived here alone, in the middle of nowhere for a reason. You can only see the house from the air. It's a great way to live. I thought I would have to change that with boys moving in, but after last night, I'm not so sure."

"Why, what happened last night?" Tom asked.

"Oh, it was a sight, for sure. I thought Carol was gonna' die."

"Quite stalling and tell me."

"Okay, we'd gone for a swim. After we were done, I told the boys to get showered, dress in their pajamas and come back to the kitchen for a snack before they went to bed. T.J. and Mike were first out and they showed up in regular jammies. They'd just started eatin' their cookies when here come Alex and Joey, struttin' down the hallway in their birthday suits, not a care in the world." Tom sputtered wildly as he processed that image and the boys all snickered. "I told them it was pajamas first, snack second, not the other way around. That's when Carol turned around and about fell off her stool. They told me, rather bluntly, that they were wearing their pajamas, that they'd slept naked for years. But that's not the best part."

"It gets better? How?"

"Well, T.J. said that if they could be naked, why couldn't he? When I told him and Mike they were free to join the twins if they wanted, T.J. got off his stool, stripped off his pajamas, then sat back down to finish his snack. The three of them just sat there, muchnin' their cookies like nothing weird was going on. So, that's the story and now they want to know, I guess, if they have to wear clothes around you or not. That is what you're asking, right?"

"Exactly, Max," Joey answered and looked at Tom for an answer to the question.

"Well," Tom started, "I've been known to lounge around my apartment in the raw. And I don't have any aversion to being seen nude or seeing others nude. I can't tell how many locker rooms I've been in and nobody seems to care. If they want to go naked around here, I sure won't say anything."

At that, all four boys hopped off their stools, stripped their clothes off and hopped back up to their stools. Then Alex looked at me and said, "Your turn, guys."

"Um, I don't think that's a good idea, Alex."

"Why not, if we're naked, you should be, too. You said you used to be like this all the time before we moved in," T.J. argued.

"That's true, but there weren't any kids around, either. I don't think the adoption agency would look too favorably on adults being naked around young kids."

"I won't tell `em," Joey said, "will you?" he asked, looking to the other boys.

"I ain't tellin' no one," came from Alex.

"My lips are sealed," added T.J.

"What you talkin' `bout?" asked Mike.

I looked to Tom and said, "When in Rome," and started to remove my shirt.
