Chapter 3 – Return Meeting

I headed for home and after getting comfortable, I started making list after list of things to do before any kid could move into this home. Bedroom furniture was first on the list. While the other three bedrooms were already fully furnished, they weren't exactly what you would call kid-friendly. That would have to change. And not just the furniture, but probably some paint and other decorating, also. Clothes were the next major item on a list, but those would have to wait until I knew what sizes would be needed. I would also have to acquire some things for entertainment purposes, but again, I would need to know what the child wanted before I went too far.

As the week passed, the lists and plans were worked on and organized as best as could be expected. When Friday finally arrived, I was wound tight in anticipation. I thought about calling James several times throughout the day but didn't want to appear that anxious. Finally, at 4:00, when I couldn't wait any longer, I headed to the study to call James. Just as I opened the study door, the phone started ringing. I sprinted to the desk with anticipation and answered on the third ring.

"Hello," I said while trying to catch my breath.

"Max, it's James. I have some news for you. Are you sitting down?"

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "Just spit it out."

"I just got off the phone with Anna and she believes she has some good candidates for consideration. She would like us to come to the agency Monday afternoon so you can meet them and see how things go. Are you available then?"

"Hell, yes. Shall we meet at your office again and go together?"

"That will probably be the easiest. Why don't you get here about 1:00? That will give us time to be there for our meeting at 2:00."

"That's perfect James. I'll be there with bells on."

"I'll be waiting for you, but you just might want to leave the bells at home," James laughed.

"Okay, I'll be there without the damn bells. Thanks for making this happen, James."

"No problems, Max. That's why I get paid the big bucks. Just remember, Max, this is just a meet and greet type of thing. That does not mean anything is going to happen. Have a good weekend and I'll see you Monday afternoon." I knew this was going to be the longest weekend of my life.

As the Monday dawn crawled into existence, I was getting ready for the most important meeting of my life. I left home at noon for the trip to James' office and after a quick lunch, arrived promptly at 1:00. After being led into James' office, James asked, "Are you ready this meeting, Max?"

"More ready than I have been for anything else in my life."

"Then let's not waste time sitting around here. Get your things and let's go."

We rode to the meeting at the agency's office in silence, both of us lost in their own thoughts. I was anxious to meet my possible son and James worried about my reaction if things fell through. We arrived at the agency with plenty of extra time and headed inside for our meeting. After a short wait, Anna came out of her office to greet us and then lead us back to her office.

Anna started the meeting with, "Welcome back you two. I want you to know that there have been some very lively discussions around the agency this past week about your request. While a few expressed concerns about allowing a gay man to adopt a boy, I think we are all finally of a mind that there is no reason why this can't be successful. We just have to be cautious and aware that every decision made from here on will face severe scrutiny by the public at large."

"I completely understand and I'll do whatever's needed to calm any concerns that anyone may have. I have waited way too long to reverse course now."

"I'm glad to hear that, Max. During our discussions this week, we were also creating a list of potential adoptees for you to meet today. We've narrowed the list down to four boys. They are Alexander and Joseph Allison, Thomas Bruce and Michael Broadhead. Alexander and Joseph are eight-year old twins in 3rd grade, Thomas is seven in 2nd grade and Michael is six and in 1st grade. All 4 boys attend the same school as all their foster parents live on the far West side of town. All of them are doing pretty well in the school and maintaining decent grades despite their circumstances. I also want to give you a bit of background on these boys before you meet them. All the boys, unfortunately, come from situations that no longer require the severing of parental rights, so you won't have to worry about that.

"Alexander and Joseph came to us after their parents were killed in car crash about 4 years ago, and are lived in the same foster those four years. They have adjusted as well as can be expected considering the circumstances. They miss their parents terribly, but due to their age, we have been unable to find an acceptable adoptive family to take both of them. I know you were expecting to adopt a single child, but I'll tell you right now that we have no intentions of allowing these boys to be split up. They rely on each other way too much to allow that to happen. They have just been in the system too long and they deserve a forever home and family.

"Thomas' mother has been incarcerated for some time now and his father is unknown. It is unlikely that his mother will ever be released from prison and that's why her rights have been severed. There is a slim possibility his biological father may show up at some point in the future, but without knowing who he is, it's nearly impossible to be certain of anything. He may not even know he has a son, which would be the best at this point in Thomas' life.

"Michael has had a rough six years in his short life. He was severely abused by his parents and removed from their home only seven weeks ago. Due to the severity of the abuse, his parent's rights have already been severed and there is no chance he will be going back to live with them. He will need some very special care in the near term, and possibly in the long term also. When he came under our care, he was malnourished and quite behind in his education. He is very withdrawn now, but we are hoping that the proper environment will help pull him out the protective shell he has created. Only time will tell.

"I think that's all for now. I'll let the boys provide any more information you may want. How does that sound, Max?"

"That sounds just fine, Anna. I'm glad I got that information from you as I hadn't considered the reasons you would have care of these kids. I'll make sure to tread lightly when we talk to them. It sounds like they all have some challenges in their futures, but I'm more than willing to help them in any way possible."

"Very well, are you ready to meet the boys?"

"Very ready, Anna."

"Do you want to meet them one at a time or all together?"

A crazy thought has been forming in my mind during our conversation, so I replied, "Why don't we meet all four at the same time. While I'm anxious to meet them, I'd also like to see how they interact with each other."

Anna reached for the phone on the end table, dialed her secretary's extension and asked, "Marcy, would you please bring the boys in? Thank you."
