Chapter 30 - A Few Surprises

By the time Brad and Pam got home from work on Valentine's Day, I was finishing dinner preparations, so they went to change and freshen up quickly before they headed out for the night.  When I saw her again just before they said goodbye, Pam seemed to be glowing and looked very lovely.

"I really appreciate this, and it's refreshing to know I won't be spending the evening worrying about what a teenage sitter is doing, or not doing, at the house."

"Just go and have a good time.  You look beautiful this evening and should have Brad's full attention, so enjoy yourself."

The kids told them to have a good time too, before joining me in the dining room to eat.  It was nothing special or fancy, but when they finished I gave each of them a couple of heart-shaped cookies I'd made for them earlier.  They seemed pleased by that simple acknowledgement of the day and thanked me, and then we went to the family room to see what was on TV.

I was surprised that even Ashley wanted to sit next to me, so Evan sat on my lap while the older pair plopped down on either side.  We watched 'Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown' first, and the other shows had a Valentine's Day theme as well.  We watched TV until it was time to get ready for bed, and after I sent Ashley upstairs, I agreed to shower with Evan and Reid, even though it was a school night.  When we finished, I tucked both Evan and Ashley in bed, and then Reid and I returned downstairs for a while.

Brad and Pam came home a little while after the younger kids were in bed, but that didn't surprise me.  They hadn't stayed out late because they had to work the next day, but they assured me they'd had a wonderful time.  Since it was getting late, I sent Reid to bed too, and when Brad and Pam got ready to turn in as well, I said goodnight and headed to my bedroom to join him.

We settled into our normal routine after that and nothing very exciting happened until the end of the month.  That's when Brad came home from work and informed me about something.

"My illustrator gave me the last of the storyboards today, so I made an appointment to pitch the screenplay to those in charge.  It's scheduled for Thursday, March 9th."

"That's great, but how do you think they'll react to it?"

"I have some credibility with them already, since my script was selected for the other movie, but I don't want to get too excited yet.  There's always a chance they might not be interested, but this is definitely a step in the right direction."

"I think so too, but I don't know as much about the industry as you do."

"Don't worry.  I'll do my best to convince them to do this."

I expected we'd both be holding our breath until the day of the meeting, which was only a couple of weeks away, but in the meantime something else distracted me from dwelling on this.  It had nothing to do with the possible film deal, though, and concerned something Reid mentioned instead.

He came home from school one afternoon and asked if he could speak with me alone.  Since Evan and Ashley were busy doing other things, I agreed to chat with him while I was fixing dinner.  I was curious to see what this might be about, because he appeared to be more anxious than normal, so I was looking forward to discovering what had him acting this way.

"So what's up?" I said to get the conversation started.

"Paul invited me to stay over at his house a couple of weekends from now."

"Great!  That sounds like it might be fun.  Do you know why he's doing this or who else is invited?"

"Yes, it's kinda for his birthday, but we're not calling it a birthday party because we don't want our parents to start having parties for us again.  He figured we could call it a St. Patrick's Day get together instead, since that Friday is St. Patrick's Day.  He's invited the rest of our group too, which means Simon, Jeremy, and Chad will be there as well."

"I don't know if you realize this, but that's the day after your dad's birthday, so I'll ask your mom to have a small party for him at the house on Thursday, after dinner.  I take it you're going to ask your parents if you can go?"

"Damn.  I forgot about Dad's birthday, so do you think I should still do this?"

"Yes!  We'll celebrate on his birthday Thursday night, so there's no reason why you shouldn't ask if you can spend Friday night at Paul's house."

"So you don't think this sounds childish, like when Ashley and Evan ask Rylee and Eric to spend the weekend?"

"Not at all.  I even remember staying at my friends' houses on the weekend as a teenager, but we never referred to them as sleepovers.  We just got together and hung out."

"So you wouldn't mind either, cuz it's when we do stuff with each other?"

"No, I wouldn't mind at all.  In fact, I think it would be a great chance for you to spend time with guys your own age.  It should be fun, and I've been trying to encourage you to do things like this since I moved here."

"Yeah, but we won't be doing the kind of stuff like I do with you."

"I didn't think you would, but it doesn't mean you can't have a good time with your buddies."

"Yeah, ok.  I guess I'll ask my mom and dad then."

"You don't sound like you're very excited about this?  Do you WANT to go?"

"Yeah, I do, but I don't really want to spend the weekend away from you."

"Just go and have a good time.  I'll be fine and we can do something when you get back, if that's what you're really worried about."

"Maybe a little, because I don't want to miss out on that either, but I just hope I can sleep without you cuddling with me."

"You'll be fine, so don't try to use that as an excuse."

"K.  I'll talk to Mom and Dad about this later then."

Brad and Pam told Reid they didn't have a problem if he wanted to do this, but they admitted they'd at least like to know where Paul lived.  He gave them the address, and they knew these boys all went to school together and I'd already met them, so it looked as if it was a go.  I was excited for Reid, even though he seemed more reserved about doing this than I would have expected.

Seeing that had been taken care of, I began to think about Brad's presentation again.  The time between his initial announcement about having a meeting with the studio heads and the actual meeting seemed to be dragging on forever.  That was probably due to the anticipation we were feeling about what it could mean to each of us, both financially and professionally.

On the day of the meeting, I sat at home and wondered if those in charge would give Brad an answer immediately, or if they'd have to spend some additional time considering the idea first.  That's why I was so surprised when my cell phone rang in the middle of the afternoon and I saw the call was from Brad.  I answered it while holding my breath.

"Quinn, I just got out of the meeting and the studio executives seemed impressed with the presentation, but they won't make a decision until they meet with you first.  Would you be willing to come to work with me on Monday so you can talk to them?"

"Uhhh... why do they want to meet with me?"

"It's probably about acquiring the rights to your story so they can turn it into a movie.  I think they'll probably want to make you an offer and will use the meeting to get an idea about how much you're expecting to be paid."

"I have no idea.  I've never done anything like this before and don't know what types of deals others have made."

"Didn't you have to negotiate on your book deals?"

"Yes, but my agent knew what I should ask for and helped me through the process."

"Ok, I'll do some research and find out as much as I can before the weekend, and then we'll talk about it in more detail."

"Sure, I don't have a problem doing that, but doesn't it mean I'll have to follow you into work on Monday?  I mean, the meeting won't last all day."

"No, it won't, but you can still ride in with Pam and me.  You can split your day between us and see what we do, both before and after your meeting, and we'll go to lunch together too.  We'll plan the entire day around you."

"Ok, if you say so and it won't be a problem."

"No problem at all.  I'll see what time they want to schedule the meeting for, and then we'll talk about this some more tonight.  Damn, I'm so excited!  This is just like high school, because we still make a great team."

"Yes, we do, but let's hold off celebrating until we get a firm commitment from them."

I was both pumped and nervous when the call ended.  I was excited because there was a possibility one of my books might become a movie, which would increase the chances that the other books might end up taking the same route.  On the other hand, I was apprehensive about what questions the studio big wigs might ask me, as well as concerned about negotiating a deal with people who did it for a living.  I hoped Brad could give me enough pointers to help me feel more comfortable going in.

When the kids returned home from school, Reid noticed that I was slightly distracted when he tried to talk to me, so he wanted to know what was wrong.

"Nothing's wrong, it's just that I'm nervous because I've got to go to the studio with your dad on Monday and talk to the studio executives."

"So they liked Dad's screenplay?"

"Yes, it seems they did, because the studio heads want to meet with me about purchasing the rights to my story so they can turn it into a movie."

"So it's going to get made into a movie?"

"That depends on how this meeting goes and whether they make a reasonable offer."

"I hope they do, because it would be great for you AND Dad."

"Yes, it certainly would."

"That reminds me, you never showed me your graphic novels like you said you would."

"Yes, I guess it slipped my mind with all that's been going on, but I'll tell you what I'll do.  Tomorrow I'll dig them out of storage and scan the pages into my computer.  Then, I'll copy the files to a flash drive so you can look at them too."

"K, that sounds good."

We talked for a while longer, and then Reid began helping me fix dinner.  He did whatever he could, such as retrieving various items, chopping vegetables, or keeping an eye on one item while I was working on another, just so we could be together.  He was still in the kitchen when his parents arrived home.

"I'm still impressed that Reid is willing to help you and he's learning how to fix a few things," Pam said before giving Reid a motherly kiss.

"Yes, he's become a valuable asset for me."  Reid was beaming proudly.

Shortly after Brad and Pam had changed out of their work clothes and into something more comfortable, I called everyone out to eat.  During the meal, Brad mentioned how his meeting went and the types of things that were discussed, hoping it would help to prepare me for my meeting.  Reid seemed to be listening to everything that was said, although the younger two brushed it aside and didn't pay much attention.  When the meal ended, Brad wanted to talk to me some more in private, so we went to the living room to chat.

Reid started to come with us, but Brad quickly told him that this didn't concern him and he should find something else to do until we finished.  Reid wasn't happy, but he left us alone, although not before telling me he'd be in his room doing homework and I could come get him when we were done.

"I was able to dig up some information about authors who made their first movie deal in the past twenty years.  That would include people like Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games), J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter), Stephenie Meyer (Twilight), Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code), and James Patterson (Kiss the Girls).  I think it should give you a fairly good idea about a range you can use, since this information is only about their first movie deals.  I felt that since you have two books in print and a third on the way that those would be good comparisons for you."

"Thank you, and this helps a lot.  Now, I need to know what other types of questions they might ask?"

For the next hour, we discussed a multitude of topics, including the relevant issues that might be covered in my meeting with the studio bosses on Monday.  Once we finished, I thanked Brad again and then went upstairs to see if Reid was done with his homework.  When I got to his room, he didn't look happy.

"What took you so long?"

"We had a lot to discuss concerning Monday's meeting."

"And I couldn't stay for that?"

"We covered a lot of very personal information about this deal as well, and that's why your dad didn't want you there."

"So I can't know the personal stuff?"

"Let me put it this way.  There's some personal information or issues that people don't want shared with others, no matter how close they are.  For example, I don't think either of us would want to have the things we do in the bedroom shared with your mom and dad.  Right?"

"Ok, I get the point, but I'm not exactly sure what it might have to do with what you and Dad were talking about."

"And you might never know, but at least now you understand."

Reid then spent the rest of the night with me, as we showered and slept together, but seeing it was a school night, there was no sex involved.  That was probably a good thing, though, since my mind was occupied with the things Brad had told me, as well as my upcoming meeting.  In fact, I laid awake long after Reid had fallen asleep, as I kept thinking about everything.

After the others left the house on Friday, I spent the first part of the day studying the facts and figures Brad had provided about the contracts the other authors had negotiated.  I noted the highest and lowest sums agreed to, but I also took an average.  If the studio bosses asked how much I wanted, I would have this information at my fingertips, so I couldn't be taken advantage of and would be able to make the best deal possible.

Later, as I was scanning my graphic novel pages into computer files, I was also mentally evaluating the various questions I might be asked and forming potential responses.  I was doing this so I could answer them confidently and not appear to be someone who didn't know what was going on.  Even though that might have been the case, I didn't want the men I was dealing with to get that impression about me.  I wanted to be perceived as prepared, knowledgeable, and someone they would be proud to be associated with, if they decided to do this.  I understood this meant it was going to be a very long weekend, because I was planning to talk to Brad about this in greater detail as I prepared for Monday.

I stopped what I was doing when the kids arrived home from school, after Evan and Ashley reminded me that Eric and Rylee were going to be spending the weekend.  I expected Amanda would be arriving with them shortly, so I put everything away, in case they wanted my attention too.  I knew Reid would, even if they didn't, so I established my priorities for the night and put the kids first.

After saying hello to me when they entered, Eric took off with Evan and Rylee disappeared with Ashley, so I chatted with Amanda briefly before she returned home.  Once she left, Reid wanted my attention.

"Don't forget that next Friday I'll be spending the night at Paul's house."

"Yes, I remember, but you'll only be gone for one night."

"And most of Saturday too.  Paul also said something about maybe staying there Saturday night too."

"You'll have to clear that with your parents first, since they've only agreed to let you do this on Friday night."

"I know."

"Ashley and Evan will be staying with the Van Pattens that weekend, so I told your parents they should go out on Friday or Saturday night."

"Then you'll be all alone, especially if I stay there Saturday night too."

"Yes, but it's not a problem.  In case you've forgotten, I was alone many nights before I moved here.  I lived by myself, so I'm not afraid of being the only one in the house, so don't let that influence what you do."

"K, I just wanted to make sure that you remembered.  So we're going to do something later, aren't we?"

"Don't we always do something on Friday and Saturday nights?"

"Yeah, but I wanted to make sure, in case we aren't able to do anything next weekend."

"Don't worry.  We'll do what we normally do after we shower with the younger pair later."

"Ok, but how about if I wash Eric and you wash Evan so we can finish quicker and you can put them in bed.  Then, you can come back and put me in bed."  He winked and giggled after saying this.

"Sounds like a great deal for me."

He giggled again and gave me a hug, pleased that everything was working out so well.  We were still chatting when his parents got home from work, so I stopped to chat with Pam for a while.

"Don't be surprised if Reid asks to spend both Friday and Saturday night at Paul's house.  He said something about Paul mentioning that earlier."

"I'm not sure about two nights."

"Think about it.  You've let Evan and Ashley spend two nights with the Van Pattens, and Eric and Rylee often spend two nights with us, so what's the difference?  I think you might have a fight on your hands if you don't let Reid do the same thing."

"Yes, I guess you're right.  We have let the younger kids do that, haven't we?  I suppose it would be ok then.  I'm glad you warned me about this before he asked, though."

"I just wanted to give you a 'heads up' before he mentioned it."

"It's a good thing you did."

I also helped her fix dinner, seeing it was her night to take care of things.  Reid eventually came in to help as well, after he gave us a reasonable amount of time to chat alone.  I thanked him for doing that, and Pam thanked him for helping, as the three of us did our best to avoid tripping over each other.

When we called the younger kids to the table, they suddenly had something they wanted to tell us.  "We didn't get to go out and play after lunch today," Evan announced.

"We started to go outside, but the teachers made us go back in the school cuz there was a dog on the playground," Eric added.

"We had to stay inside too," Rylee added, "but it wasn't a dog.  Our teacher told us there was a coyote outside."

"Really?  At the school?" Pam gasped.

"Yeah, our teacher said the principal called the wildlife men and had them shoot the coyote with a dart gun and put it to sleep.  Then they moved it somewhere safe."

"I didn't think about this before the kids brought it up," I began, "but there was an automated message from the school on the home phone earlier.  It merely stated a wild animal had been tranquilized on school property and relocated to a wildlife area, but the speaker insisted there was nothing to be concerned about."

"I'm surprised it was discovered in such a heavily populated area," Brad added.  "Maybe the drought, a lack of food, or the wildfires had caused it to leave its natural habitat, but it still could have escalated into a serious problem.  I'd hate to think about what might have happened if it had confronted a small child or someone's pet.  I hope this is only an isolated incident, though, and not an indicator of what's to come."

"I'm willing to bet that it's just an isolated thing," I offered.  "Wild animals generally don't like being close to people either, so I'm confident they'll keep their distance, as long as they have a choice."

"I suppose so," Pam agreed, "but hearing about it happening at the school has shaken my confidence slightly."

"I think we all noticed how you reacted, but you can calm down now, because the incident is done and over with," Brad stated, in an attempt to reassure his wife.

Once the discussion ended, we finished eating and the kids took off to do their thing.  As soon as they were gone, Brad looked at me and asked a question.  "Did the message from the school really slip your mind?"

"Actually, it did, because it didn't sound like a big deal.  It wasn't very specific, because it didn't give any details about the type of animal involved, so I doubt anyone listening to it would have become alarmed.  Besides, the person relaying the message didn't seem very excited about what happened either."

"Ok, I was just wondering if it was something like that, or if you just didn't want to bring it up in front of Pam and the kids."

"I really didn't want to do that either, because I wasn't sure if they knew about what had happened.  However, since the kids were the ones who brought it up, I felt I should tell you what I knew too."

I chatted with Brad and Pam a little longer, until Reid let me know he wanted to spend some time with me too.  I noticed his parents were smirking when he practically dragged me away from them, but when we got to the family room we discovered the other kids were watching the Disney channel.  Since he didn't want to do that, we went to watch the TV in my apartment instead.  We didn't usually do this, because my TV wasn't as large as the one in the family room, so we generally watched the shows there instead.  I basically only used it when I was alone, because I liked to have one of the news channels on while I was working on my story.  I did this for two reasons: the first was to drown out the other noises while I was writing, such as the neighbors working on their property, vehicular traffic, or the sounds of planes or helicopters flying by.  I also liked to keep an ear out for breaking news or to gain details about important news stories.  It was just something I've always done.

Anyway, Reid and I were now alone in my living room watching TV when I discovered he wanted to make out instead.  It started very subtly, as he would occasionally lean over to kiss my cheek or neck as we were watching the show.  When I didn't respond the way he wanted, he reached over, put his hand on my chin, and pulled my face toward him.  After he did that, he placed his lips over mine, as his tongue snaked out and made its intention known.  As soon as I realized what he wanted, the program was forgotten and we were soon making out.  When he attempted to remove my clothing, I had to remind him of something.

"Don't get carried away, because we'll be showering with the other two in a little while.  I think they might be suspicious if I was undressed already, but I also wouldn't be able to go get them either."

"Then we won't shower with them tonight."

"That would cause problems, because Evan and Eric both look forward to doing this on the weekend."

"I know, but I look forward to spending time with you so we can do other things on the weekend too."

"And we will, but only after we all shower together."

Reid wasn't happy, but he settled for just making out until I went to get the younger boys.  After we stripped down and took our shower, I followed Eric and Evan upstairs and tucked them in bed, before I returned to do what Reid wanted.  He quickly let me know what that was.

"I want you to use the new dildo again, so I get ready for you sooner, but you can use the vibrating one on me too.  I like how it feels in my butt."

"Ok, I'll start off with the newest dildo, but then I'll use the other one when I'm ready to suck you off.  I know you like it when I aim it at your prostate while it's vibrating."

"Yeah, I do."

Since that had been clarified, I retrieved both items and the lube from the nightstand, as Reid got comfortable on the bed.  Since we'd already made out in the living room earlier, we got to it right away, without any further preliminaries.  First, I inserted the dildo shaped like a penis into his rectum and worked it back and forth for a few minutes.  After that, I removed and reinserted the same dildo several times, until he was able to accommodate it without any signs of discomfort.  That's when we switched gears - and dildos.

Before I began to suck him off, I inserted the larger of the two vibrating dildos in his butt and began increasing it through the various speeds.  Once it was at the highest setting, I tilted it so it was hitting his prostate as I got ready to finish him off.  The dual stimulation caused him to ejaculate very quickly, and quite powerfully too, and I could see he'd thoroughly enjoyed it as well.

After he'd recuperated from that powerful release, he returned the favor and sucked me off next.  He didn't use either dildo on me, because his fingers did that job instead, as he massaged my prostate while sucking me off.  As soon as I busted a nut and had returned from my post orgasmic fog, we kissed some more before we cuddled together and fell asleep.
