CHAPTER 8 Kevin knew he had a few phone calls to make so he left the gang in the room discussing what to do next while he went to call his partner, the real director of CPS, to see what he could find out about this woman and what was up. "I know Carl is behind this and so is Ellen," Marilyn told them. "He will do anything to get his hands on Davey right now and I'll be damned if he will." "Mom, I assure you he'll not get anywhere near Davey. Some of us will be with him at all times. Jim and I will stay tonight with him and Mikey so you and Sister Baylor can get some rest. We have the guard on the door and hospital security is on alert now," Gary assured her. "That man has really gotten under my skin now and I will do everything in my power to see him behind bars that I can," he finished. You could see he was visibly shaken by the visit from the so called CPS worker. "She has no right whatsoever to remove Davey from our custody or yours," Jim added. "Kevin will get Lee behind this and find out what is going on, but to be on safe side I want to call a friend of mine, a lawyer. Scott will know how to handle this and can advise us what to do. For all we know that woman doesn't even work for CPS," he finished. About that time Davey was starting to wake up asking for Mikey and his mother. "Mom, are you there?" he managed to squeak out as Marilyn moved over to the bed to embrace her son in her arms. "Mom's here, baby, everything is gonna be okay. They will bring Mikey down here soon from recovery and you will be able to see him," she told him, trying to calm him down. "Now, you may not be able to talk to him for a while because he will still be sedated and sleeping, but at least you will be in the room with him. Jim and Gary are staying with you guys tonight while Sister Baylor and I go get some rest. So, I want you to be on your best behavior for them. Okay? Mom loves you." "I love you too, Mom," he whispered as his throat was still sore, hugging his Mom and giving her a kiss as Sister Baylor also moved to give him a hug and kiss. "I love you, too, Sister Baylor." "And I love you, too, my sweet boy. You and Mike just worry about getting better, okay, and we will take good care of you," Sister Baylor told him as she hugged and kissed him. "Your Mom and I are leaving to some rest, but we will be back first thing in the morning. You just try and rest tonight, okay baby? "I will Mamaw, I promise," Davey answered her. "I know you will, baby, you've never lied to me before," Sister laughed giving him another big hug before releasing him to leave. "Mom will see you first thing in the morning, too, sweetie," Marilyn told him, giving him a last hug and kiss before she, too, left with the good reverend. As the two ladies left the room Davey told Gary," I have to go pee." "Okay, come on, stud, let's get you in the bathroom before we all have to swim there," he laughed, helping Davey off the bed and into the bathroom. He sat him on the toilet, and then left him with orders to call him when he was finished. After he helped Davey back to bed, Gary sat down in a chair beside the bed and just held on to his brother's hand. There was a knock on the door and a nurse entered and asked everyone to clear the room while they got Mike situated in bed, then they could come back in. Gary told her plainly, "The guard stays in the room, regardless. He is here to protect both boys so he stays. Jim and I will walk outside. The nurse had no problem with the guard staying as she was one of the nurses allowed on the list. "We will have him settled in just a few minutes then you guys can come back in," the nurse told them as they wheeled Mikey in the room. "It will only take us a few minutes to get him transferred to the other bed." While the men were standing outside the room they never noticed a figure lurking near by, watching their every move. Carl, with the help of his sister, had managed to get a hospital uniform and had dyed his hair and shaved his beard so he could sneak into the hospital and try to snatch Davey away. He needed the kid to make money. Many men were willing to pay good money to screw that little faggot and no one was gonna get in the way of his gravy train if he had to kill them all. All he had to do was wait for the right moment, walk in, snatch the kid and disappear within just a few minutes, thanks to his sister, Ellen, who had shown him shortcuts through the hospital that the cops would never think to search. His only problem now was he had not counted on the guard being on the door or that other damn faggot being placed in the room with him. Plus, now he had these two faggots staying there with the guys, so how was he gonna get past them? Looked like he was gonna need help now ! with all these people guarding those two good for nothing faggots. He knew there was nothing he could do tonight so he might as well go back to his hide out before he got caught and was recognized. He knew the cops were gonna be hot on his tail now. He really needed to find a new hideout, also. He was gonna need a place to keep the boy isolated once he got his hands on him. All he needed was time to get him and get him out of town before he was caught. As he snuck back thru the hospital and made his way out to the car he had borrowed to drive around `til he could get the heat off his car, Carl was trying to think of a way to get to Davey with out getting caught my the guard or any others that were around him. He needed to think who he could call for help. Any of his family would be too well known and would be recognized before they got anywhere near the room, much less to get to Davey. The more he thought of Davey the more angry he got; that little fag had now cost him his j o! b, his house and now his wife. He would make sure he paid dearly. When he got through with him he would be lucky if he was able to walk, much less sit on his butt. Meanwhile at the hospital the guys still had no clue they had been watched. All they thought of was Davey and Mike and getting them on the road to healing, the better to get out of here and get someplace safe, if there was such a place. Maybe since school was out for the summer they could all take a vacation that was somewhere safe. `Lord knows he and Jim could afford it,' Gary thought to himself, `and they were due for a vacation anyway,' Gary thought to himself. He would talk this over with Jim just as soon as the boys were able to travel. Maybe they could make a trip down to the beach in Florida where they had the condo they'd bought a few yrs back and hardly ever used anymore. After waiting outside the room for a few minutes the guys were allowed back in, the first thing they saw was Davey standing over Mikey's bed hugging him. "Hey buddy, be careful there, don't hurt Mikey. He just had surgery, sweetie," Gary said, speaking softly. "I am being careful, bro, but I just had to give him a hug," Davey replied blushing at being caught hugging and kissing his boyfriend. "It's okay, Baby, you didn't hurt me," Mikey replied hoarsely, still dry and groggy from the meds he had been given. "Could someone get me some water, please, my mouth is so parched," he plead." "I'll check with your nurse, stud, hang on," Jim told him as he went out to talk with the nurse. "How you feeling there, Mikey?" Gary asked as he walked up and gave the guy a light hug. "Feel like I been hit by a Mack truck is what I feel like, but at least my Davey is okay." He tried to laugh but the pain was too much. "Man, my head hurts like a bitch," he complained. "Do you need me to call the nurse to get you something for pain?" asked Gary. "Naw bro, she already gave me a shot just now; it just hasn't had time to kick in yet," Mikey replied as his eyes started getting heavy with sleep. "Ok, partner, you get back in your bed now and let Mikey rest and sleep; you can talk to him later when he wakes up, okay?" Gary said to Davey as he turned him around toward his own bed and patted his butt. "Now, get over there and get some rest, young man." "Okay, okay, I am going," Davey giggled then muttered under his breath, "Slave driver." "I heard that, young man," Gary laughed. "Yeah, yeah, whatever," Davie laughed as he crawled back in his bed. Gary then joined his own partner over in the recliner that was in the room and snuggled with him for a few minutes as they talked softly. "I am worried, hon, that woman from CPS could cause trouble for the boys as well as all of us," Gary whispered as he hugged Jim close to him. "I am just wondering who the hell she is and where she came from so fast." "Well, we do know one thing she isn't the director of CPS in Lee County. Allen is the director, so either she is an imposter or she is trying to take Allen's job from him," Jim stated. "My vote says she is an imposter and the papers she had are forged. I would think maybe she is working for Carl." "I have to agree, love, my guess is she is working for Carl, trying to get her hands on Dave for him. That is never gonna happen if I have anything to do with it," Gary whispered back as the two snuggled together. "You get some sleep, babe, and I will take first watch over the boys. I am gonna run down and get some coffee first. Is there anything you want?" Gary asked his lover. "Not now, babe. I will sleep for a while then I will get some coffee while I am watching," Jim answered as Gary stood, leaning over and kissing him. "Love you, babe," he said as he watched Gary leave the room silently. Gary made his way quietly to the coffee shop, got his coffee and decided to take it outside to drink it while having a cigarette, something he hardly ever did anymore. Tonight though, he felt like he needed a smoke to help calm his nerves. He found a bench and sat down, drinking his coffee and lighting up a smoke. He let his thoughts drift back to earlier today when he almost lost a brother he had just found and how close they had come to losing the one his brother loved. Gary knew that if it ever got out that he and Jim were partners, they stood the risk of losing their jobs even though some of the staff they worked with knew about them, but not all. He knew, too, that with all their investments and money they both had inherited from family they didn't have to work. Gary knew they could live quite comfortably for the rest of their lives and not even leave home if necessary, but he had always wanted to be a teacher and so had Jim. They loved their work and loved their stud e! nts. He had also dreamed of having his own working horse ranch, and with the land he and Jimmy owned as well as that Davey now owned and controlled, with he himself being trustee, that they could have a very nice ranch and maybe even raise some cattle. Gary continued to think as he sat there enjoying his coffee and cigarette. This was something he would talk over with Jim. They always made decisions together and never separately. Why worry about something that had not happened yet. They would just cross that path when they came to it. Gary had more to worry about right now; he had the two boys upstairs to worry about right now and getting them well and keeping Davey safe. Finishing his smoke and coffee, Gary decided to return to the room and check on the boys and Jim. Walking back inside and toward the elevator Gary saw Kevin approaching him. Stopping, he waited for the doctor to catch up with him. "Hey," Kevin greeted him. "I was just on my way back up to check on you guys and let you know what I found about the visitor we had earlier," he finished "So. What's the scoop on Ms CPS worker?" Gary laughed nervously, hoping this would turn out to be nothing serious. "Why don't we wait `til we get back to the room?" Kevin answered. "I don't want prying ears to hear any of this as it is under investigation," he continued as he and Gary walked into the waiting elevator. As the two rode in silence Gary was deep in thought. This didn't sound good to him but then again it might not be anything. But why was Kevin being so secretive about it? He pondered all this over in his mind. Arriving at their destination the two men exited the elevator only to hear a shouting match coming from the direction of the boys room. Rushing out, they both all but ran to the room. Outside the door was the guard arguing with a stout built nurse whom they both recognized as Ellen, Carl's sister, who was a nurse in the hospital. "I told you, lady, you are not going in that room unless your name is on the list and your name is definitely on the `do not enter' list!" the guard stated as he blocked the entrance to the room. "I am the head RN on this ward and I have to get in there and give the patients their medications," she stormed back. "Now get out of my way before I call security!" she continued as she tried once again to push past the guard who stood steady and did not budge. "What in blazes is going on here?" Kevin asked as they approached the two. "This guard will not let me in there to do my job, doctor," Ellen started being ever so innocent acting. "Doctor Smith, she is on the list of people who are not to enter this room and I cannot let her in," the guard told him. "Nurse, what medications are ordered that you are giving?" Kevin asked, knowing full well what meds he had ordered. "They are both due for their pain medications and sleeping meds," she stated. "I see, and what medication would that be?" he asked again knowing Davey was not to receive any more medication unless absolutely necessary as he was just under security watch. "Both patients are getting Dimerol and Vistaril as ordered by their doctor," Ellen answered. "And who might their doctor be?" Kevin asked, almost laughing inside while seething also with anger. "I am sorry, doctor, I never paid attention to the doctor's name on the chart," she came back quickly thinking she could get by this one. "Well, it just so happens I know who their doctor is." Kevin told her without giving away too much. "Go back to the desk and wait there while I have a talk with the guard then we can see about getting the patients their meds," he continued calmly. As Ellen returned down the hall to the nurses station, Kevin turned to the guard and told him, "Under no circumstances is she to be allowed in that room. I don't know how she got on this floor to work or even if she is actually working on this floor. I want you to call hospital security. I want to see exactly what she had planned to give the boys as they have no more meds ordered tonight unless absolutely needed for pain or anxiety in Dave's case," he finished as Gary walked into the room and Kevin walked toward the nurse's station. Security was approaching the desk from the opposite direction at the same time. "Nurse, may I see the medication you were about to give the patient's in room 365, please?" Kevin asked politely while a stunned security guard looked on. "I don't need to show you their medication as it has already been ordered by their physician," Ellen answered sharply, getting annoyed by this doctor who was obviously getting in her way. "As I said, I would like to see the medication," he stated, not so politely this time as the Ellen began to fidget. "Officer, if she does comply, I want her searched," he turned to the guard and told him sharply and to the point. "Now listen here," Ellen started as the guard began to approach her. "I don't know who you think you are but you are not going to interfere with my job." she spoke hastily, trying to buy time. "I'll tell you who I am," Kevin stated abruptly. "I am the boy's doctor, that is who I am, and I had no more meds ordered tonight for either patient unless they were absolutely necessary and called for by the patient or one of his guardians." He continued speaking as the guard moved to stand beside Ellen. "Now, if you will be so kind as to hand over the medication you had prepared I am sure we can clear this matter up!" he spoke gruffly and angrily. "I don't have to show you anything," Ellen started to say as the guard took her by the arm and pulled her hands behind her back. "Unhand me, you idiot," she screamed as the pain shot through her shoulders. Handcuffing the screaming woman, the guard began to search the pockets of her uniform for the drugs she was hiding. He found the vials that she had already drawn into the needles. The guard donned a pair of gloves and gently removed the drugs from her pocket. Kevin also donned a pair of gloves so that he could examine the me d! ications without messing up any fingerprints that might be needed later. Seeing what he was looking at, Kevin began to fume with anger. "I want this woman arrested!" he almost yelled at the guard. "I will have to call the police for that, sir," the security guard told him. "No need to do that. We have one on guard on the boy's door; I am sure he can place her under arrest and detain her `til another officer can arrive to transport her," Kevin told him. "Just make sure she doesn't go anywhere until I return with him," he said to the guard while looking straight into Ellen's face before he turned to go summon the police officer guarding the boys room. Returning just moments later, the officer took charge of the situation and placed Ellen under arrest. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in court," the officer began reading her rights as she steadily screamed profanities at him and Kevin. "You son of a bitch, you'll pay for this!" she screamed at Kevin. "Let me go, you fucking asshole! My family will see you rot in hell, you don't know who the fuck you are dealing with!" she spat out at the young officer who was still calmly reading her rights, never once being fazed by her screaming. "You all think you can protect those faggots, well I have news for you! My brother and my family will see to it they go to jail for trying to falsely accuse him!" Her screaming was getting louder. "Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you?" the officer asked as he finished reading her rights to her and had her sit down in a chair to wait for a transport he had called. "I think we really need to get her in a room and close the door so the patients and other workers are not disturbed by her screaming," Kevin told the officer as he pointed to a closed door which led to the nurses lounge. "I agree, this can't be good for the patients who are trying to rest and heal," the officer said, nodding his head and helping Ellen to her feet and half leading, half dragging her to the room and closing the door. "You have nothing to charge me with. You can't prove anything!" Ellen yelled once they were alone in the room. "How about attempted murder; from what I saw there were enough drugs in those needles to kill either patient, and neither medication was ordered for either of my patients so how do you explain that?" Kevin asked matter-of-factly. "I don't have to say anything to you, you fucking faggot!" She hissed as she tried to spit in Kevin's face. "You're right, you don't have to say anything to me but you will have to answer to a judge, and from where I am standing now you will never be a nurse again, anywhere. I am reporting you to the board and your license will be pulled!" Kevin laughed at her, "You will be lucky if you can get a job emptying bedpans for the rest of your life after you get out of jail. I'll see to it!" he said as he looked her straight in the face. "Watch her and don't let her out of your sight," Kevin told the security guard and the police officer. "I'll go check on the boys and stand guard until our prisoner here is picked up." Kevin left a screaming woman as he walked out of the room and down the hall to the boy's room. Upon entering the room he found a very excited Gary as well as an equally excited Jim wanting to know what was happening. "What the hell is going on out there? It sounded like World War Three was about to happen?" Gary asked without even stopping to breathe. "Who was that nurse?" he continued without giving Kevin a chance to answer his first question. "Hey, take it easy, slow down," Kevin told him, trying to soothe him and get him to calm down. That was Davey's Aunt Ellen and right now she is under arrest for attempted murder," he told the guys. "Seems she was going to inject them with a large amount of an anesthetic that is used to put people to sleep for surgery; but, the amount she was going to give would have stopped their hearts in a few seconds," he explained. "Thank God, the guard on the door stopped her from getting into the room. I don't know how she got to work on this floor as she is assigned to fifth floor, but I can assure you I will find out and heads will roll." "I am glad the boys are sleeping and didn't have to witness this," Jim breathed a sigh of relief. "They have had enough stress already without this added on to it," he added further. "Well, she is on her way to jail now so all we have to do now is catch Carl and maybe we can get this mess behind us once and for all," Kevin said. "Now about the visit from our CPS worker earlier; it seems she is not even employed in this county but in Monroe County. She has no legal recourse here in this county, whatsoever. Allen is having a full investigation started into how she got the papers to come here and try to claim jurisdiction to take Davey into custody, but he did assure me it will never happen since Monroe County is two counties over and not even near Lee County," Kevin explained. "I don't understand how this can be happening," Jim said as he cuddled his lover close to his side. "It seems Carl has connections in a lot of places but this is one war he is not winning," Kevin replied, really not knowing what to say other than what he had been told. "It seems as though Carl's family was well connected and stood behind him although he was the black sheep of the family. This man is not getting anywhere near these boys while they are here. I plan to select certain staff on all shifts and only they will be allowed in the boy's room while they are in the hospital," he continued "Well, I know when we get them back home I plan to hire some off-duty police to help secure our home until this mess is over," Gary stated. "My little brother is going to be safe one way or another if I have to take him out of state until Carl is captured." He let out a sigh and lay his head on Jim's shoulder. "Well guys, it is late and I need to get home to Allen. I will see you both in the morning; I am going to have a cot sent in for you two to try and get some rest," Kevin told them as he prepared to leave for the night. "I will see you guys first thing in the morning." Ok, no cliff hanger this time. Hopefully chapter nine will be out soon. Readers feedback is welcome and appreciated. Flames will be ignored
