He stopped just before reaching the front door but didn`t turn around. "Look at me." He slowly turned and I saw tears rolling down his cheeks. It didn't take but two seconds for me to reach him and pull him into my arms. His sobs became audible now, and his body shuddered. I wrapped him tighter in my arms, and felt his encircle me. Slowly they became tighter and tighter until I leaned down and kissed the top of his head. "Okay, okay. Just relax Donny. Shh, shh. It's okay. I got you." We stood there until the microwave dinged, signaling the stew was ready. I slowly led him toward the kitchen, not loosening my hold. He kept his tight grip also, making me wonder if my ribs would survive. "Let's get something in our bellies now, okay?" He slowly nodded, still sniffling, and eased the death grip he had on my waist. I slowly eased him into a chair at the table and turned him in, his arms sliding around me. "Can I get the food?" I asked softly. He nodded slightly, his face down. I could still hear the sniffles as I turned and grabbed a couple of bowls. I quickly served up the stew and poured two mugs of coffee, placing them on the table. He kept his face down as we ate in silence. Slowly the sobs that had wracked his body subsided. My head was spinning with the different possibilities that caused this reaction. Was he beaten at home? Is that why he was out on a night like this? Why did he choose my place to come? Wait, Bob said he was coming out in the morning. He should know better what to do. I relaxed a little, knowing that this would soon be out of my hands. "Let me fix you a place to sleep. If you want more then get it." I said as I rose from the table. I quickly fixed up a bed in one of the spare bedrooms and returned to the kitchen. Donny was still eating and I glanced at the stew pot, noting that it looked like it was down about two more bowls. That, at least, is one normal thing about this teenager. He finished what was in his bowl and sat, head still down. A mumbled thanks came from the table top. "Did you get enough? Want more?" I asked as I rinsed my own bowl in the sink. "No thanks. Mister Par...ah, Tom, can I ask you a question?" "Sure. I will try to answer any question you have." "Do I have to call home? I really don't need to." Donny asked in a pleading voice. Why didn't he need to call home? This is getting really strange. "Why don't we sleep on it and talk about it in the morning. That sound alright with you?" "Yeah, that would be better." "Donny, look at me. I don't know what is going on, but if there is anything you want to talk about then I am ready to listen any time. By the way, Doctor Davis is coming out in the morning to give you a quick check, just to make sure you didn't catch pneumonia or something. Okay?" "I guess. Can I go to bed now? I am really tired." "Okay, let's get you to bed then." I stood and held out my hand. He slowly took it and stood. I led him into the guestroom I had prepared and helped him into the bed. Pulling the covers up to his chin, I bent over and quickly pecked his forehead. He looked at me quizzically. "Why did you do that?" My heart jumped as I realized what I had done without thinking. Oh man, now he is going to think I am a pervert. But it was a habit I had picked up while baby sitting in my younger years. "It's an old habit of mine." I started. "Whenever I tuck someone in, I do that. It means that I want you to have sweet dreams, to sleep well because I will be here to protect you. I hope you don`t mind." He smiled slightly, "Nah, it's okay. Actually kinda neat. Nobody's ever done that to me before." "Good. Night, night then. Sleep tight, and, ah, don't let the bed bugs bite." Oops, another old habit, almost said love you. I got up to leave and realized he was holding my hand again. God, was this kid starved for affection or what? I gently worked my hand loose and shut off the light. I told him I would leave the bathroom light on and his door open in case he needed to get up during the night, then went to my room, hoping to finish the night with some sleep. I had just snuggled into my comforter when I heard the sobs. Sighing, I got up again and went to his room. "Is everything all right?" "I'm scared." Against my better judgement, "Would it make you feel better if you slept in with me?" "Can I?" "Come on. I need some sleep." Donny jumped out of the bed and grabbing my hand, dragged me into my room. We both climbed into the bed, and the next thing I knew the sun was shining in the window. I glanced at the clock and saw it was 6:30. Last night came back to me in a flash and I looked around at the extra lump under the comforter. Donny was still sound asleep, so I got up quietly. Better get busy because Bob will be here for breakfast soon. So I threw some clothes on and went to the kitchen to start the cooking. I decided to make it a big one, because of the demolition job last night. I got everything prepared, but didn't start cooking it, so to let Donny sleep as long as he wanted. At 7:30 I heard a car pull up to the front of the house and went to the door. Bob was right on time. "Morning, Bob." "Morning to you, Tom. How's Donny?" "Still asleep. We need to talk before you look in on him though." "I agree. You wouldn't believe what I learned last night after your call." "Oh? About Donny?" "Yeah. After you called, I called Buddy to see if he knew anything." This is interesting. Buddy Jacobs is the local Deputy Sheriff and if anything happens in this town he would know about it. "What did he have to say?" "Well, Tom, I don't know if you know this, but Donny's Mom died mysteriously about two years ago. When she died, I got called in to find out the cause of death. I'm not a pathologist, so her body was sent to San Antonio for an autopsy. I never heard what she died from until last night. Buddy said she had a birth defect that finally killed her, something that she got from her mother who, as a child, was exposed to radiation from the a-bomb that hit Hiroshima. But Buddy said it really tore up Joe, Danny's father. He's taken to drinking and fighting since." "So that's where Danny get his Oriental looks." "Yeah. Joe was stationed in Japan in the Air Force when he met Danny's mom. They got married there. Donny came along kinda late, though. I guess he was a surprise to them, because they had been married almost twenty years before he was born." During our conversation we had gone into the house and were sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee. Just then I heard the tell tale sign of movement from the water bad, so I told Bob it sounds like Donny is up. "But before you go see him, Bob, there's something I think you need to know. When I saw him in the bathtub last night he has some pretty bad bruises in the rib area. You might want to check them out." "Yeah, thanks. In the tub, huh. Should I be jealous?" Bob smirked. I looked at him sharply, "What?" "Tom, don't get all riled up now. You know I gave you that physical a while back. Some things are obvious." Oh shit! Is Bob gay? He is one good looking guy, and I hadn't heard anything about a wife. Possibilities? But why haven't I seen any signs from him before? "Look, I know that just because you're gay, it doesn't mean you're a child molester. I'm more educated than that." I took a deep breath. "Thanks, I think." I peered at Bob, trying to read his face. And Donny sleeping in my bed. I better move him quickly to the other bedroom. "I'll go see if he is ready to see you now. Be back in a sec." I rushed off to my room. Luckily the bedrooms doors were down a hall, not readily visible from the kitchen. When I entered my room, Donny was just coming out of the bathroom still in the sweats so I pointed at his room. "Doctor Williams is here. He wants to take a look at you, make sure you aren't sick from last night." Donny turned toward his room with "Yeah, okay." I went back to the kitchen and told Bob that Donny was ready. I pointed him down the hall to Donny's room, telling him I would either be in the kitchen or out back when he finished. I then set to cleaning up the mess from last night and setting a place for Donny's breakfast. It wasn't five minutes before Bob came back out and asked for the phone. I told him to use the one in the living room, as Donny would be having breakfast here. Donny came shuffling out a moment later and I set to fixing a huge stack of pancakes. Actually the stack didn't get very big, because ever time I added, Donny subtracted. For a skinny little kid, he sure could eat. And the sausage just flat disappeared. I considered asking Donny if he had seen links lying around, but decided maybe he wasn't ready for teasing yet. Bob came to the kitchen doorway and motioned for me. I followed him into the living room. I knew something was up, because he had a very pensive look. Bob looked at me, "How long can Donny stay here?" TBC...
