MERRY CHRISTMAS, everybody! This chapter is my present to you, along with lots of hugs. Donny - 21 Buddy climbed from his patrol car as we pulled up next to him. He looked serious, but when he saw us laughing and carrying on he broke into a grin. "Look's like ya'll been having some fun. Good day for it." "Sure is. As a matter of fact, it's a great day." Dad responded, and gave me a wink. I turned red and felt a little ashamed, considering how the day started. But yeah, it is turning out to be a great day. "Hi, Buddy. You don't need me for anything, do ya?" Doctor Bob spoke up. "Nah, nothing that I know of. Just came by to say hello." "Well then, hello." I was feeling so good that I ran over to Buddy and gave him a hug. He looked surprised for a moment, then gave me a great big one back. "Glad to see you are so happy, Donny." "Yeah. We just had a blast playing mini golf, and Dad and Deke tied." Buddy's eyebrows shot up. "Oh, well that's great. Deke, how you doing?" "Ah, fine." "Good, Deke. Glad you like it here. I think this is a great place to be, don't you." "Yeah, it's nice." Buddy started looking a little exasperated trying to get Deke to open up. So Dad broke the building tension. "Everybody come on in. I think we have some iced tea here somewhere." "Sounds good to me, Tom. But it will have to be a short one, I am on duty today." "But aren't you on duty every day, Buddy?" Dad asked with a grin. "Yeah, I guess you're right. No need to rush off, I guess." "Great. Come on in." We all went into the house and naturally stopped in the usual gathering spot, the kitchen. Dad went to the cupboard and got some glasses down. "Son, can you get the tea, and some ice out of the freezer?" "Sure, Dad. Coming right up." Buddy just started grinning. "Guess it was a good move after all." he muttered. "What was that, Buddy?" Doctor Bob asked. "Oh, nothing. Just admiring how close Tom and Donny have gotten is such a short time." Dad smiled and I blushed, again. Doctor Bob added to the syrup, "All it takes is love, Buddy, large doses of love." Buddy laughed, "And I suppose that was your prescription all along, huh?" "You got it." laughed Doctor Bob. "Dad, can Deke and I be excused. I'm sure you grownups have some things to talk about." "Sure. I'll let you know if we decide to do something interesting, though. Deke, what time so you have to be home?" Deke shot a quick glance at Buddy, then turned to Dad. "I guess around five. Mom didn't really say, but I do have some studying I need to do tonight after I get home." "Okay. I'll keep an eye on the time for you." Deke and I went back to my room. I really wanted to sneak back after we left to eavesdrop on the men's conversation, but I didn't think Deke would go along with it. So we fired up the PS2 and got down to some serious play. Tom's POV As some as I heard the door close to Donny's room, I turned to Buddy. "Okay. I know you have something, so spill it." Buddy grinned."I guess I was pretty transparent. But first, I want to say something to you, Tom. When I first decided to let Donny stay here I had my doubts about whether it was the right thing to do or not. But in just a week you and Donny have bonded so well, I hate to think what would happen if we had to separate you two." "Buddy, that is my greatest fear now, that Donny would have to leave for some reason. I have become very attached to him, and would have great difficulty if we were to part, for any reason." "Yeah, sure looks that way. I am glad I decided the way I did." Bob spoke up, "Hey, I had input to that decision too." Buddy turned to him, "Yeah, I know, Doc. And now we have to make another big one." "About Deke?" "Yup. Seems there's more going on at that house than any of us knew about. I'm worried about putting Deke back into the fire, so to speak." "Okay, Buddy, what have you found out?" "Well, I ain't no doctor, but I do think that both of Deke's parents have gone off the deep end. And it might not be safe for Deke over there." "How so?" "I got hold of Clint Sherwood, the guy who gave Deke a ride over yesterday. He is one of the hands at the Schiller place. And he said Old Man Schiller has been acting really strange lately. Yelling at everybody, losing his temper all the time. And he saw him almost hit Claire once." "Claire?" "Hans' wife, Deke's mother. Most of the boys over there don't hold with hitting a woman, so a couple stepped in and stopped him. Seems they're having the same trouble as most around here with the price of beef so low, and Hans is really getting pinched. Least ways, that's what Clint thinks. Couple of guys have quit over Hans' tantrums, and he hasn't hired any replacements. And Hans always did like to settle things with his fists. Had a couple complaints a few years back but nobody really wanted to cause trouble." Bob spoke, "Yeah, come to think of it, I have seen a rise in stress releated illnesses the last couple years. Didn't really tie it to the beef industry though." "Yeah, it's hitting a lot of people around here really hard. All that import beef is really cutting the market. But Clint said Hans is taking it real hard. Said he always was strict, but now it's much worse. And he's making bad decisions about the ranch now. Clint said the guys don't have any choice but to do it even though they know it is wrong, cause Hans just flies into a rage if anyone crosses him." I spoke, "Okay, that's Deke's father. But you said both of them." "Yeah, I did. Nothing I can put my finger on exactly, but Claire did report Deke as a runaway yesterday. Then when I went out to the ranch to get information for the report, I mentioned to her that Deke was here on a sleepover. She looked very vacant, and just said oh, must have forgot. How do you forget where your kid is? And then call the cops and report him as a runaway?" "Strange." "Very. Doc, did you examine Deke? What did you find." "Nothing conclusive, but I did see evidence of possible physical abuse. Very tiny scars on the back and buttocks that could have been caused by physical abuse. But no current trauma. I do want to take a bone scan though, just to see if there are any signs of old breaks or something." That confirms my suspicions from yesterday. I wonder if Donny got Deke to open up to him any. "Hey Donny," I called, "can you come here a minute?" A distant "Just a sec, Dad" came from his room. Buddy's eyebrows went up again. I could tell he was wondering what was on my mind. "They have been together almost constantly for two days now. Maybe Deke said something to Donny that we don't know about." Buddy just nodded and sat back. Donny came out a moment later. "What'cha need, Dad?" "Son, Bob, Buddy and I were just talking a little about Deke and his home life. Did he say anything to you about it?" "Not much. But one thing he said that I don't think is right." "What's that, son?" "Well, he said he gets a beating every Saturday night from his dad for anything he might have done the week before. Dad, you ain't supposed to beat someone if you don't catch them doing something wrong, are you?" "No, son. And I would never beat you anyway. I hope you know that. Did he say anything about his mother?" "Yeah. He said he never sees her very much, and when he does, she is always blaming him for something." "Okay, Donny. Thank you for being so honest. And don't think you're telling on Deke. We are just looking to see if he needs some help." "Okay Dad. Is he in trouble?" "No, son. Now why don't you go on back and do whatever you two were doing before we interupted." "Sure. Actually I'm glad you called. Deke was about to kick my ass on T-III." We all laughed. "Son, can't you find a less violent game to play?" "Aw, Dad." "Okay, son. Go back to your game." "Thanks." Donny gave me a quick buss on the cheek and a hug, then ran back to his room. Buddy shook his head, "I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. This just makes me so happy. One week and he is acting like a happy, healthy boy." "Yeah, isn't it great how those two have bonded?" Bob said. I could feel my face getting red. "He grows on you real quick. At least, he did on me." Buddy laughed. "Now that is an understatement." I thought back to this morning. "But we still have a long way to go before Donny is back to normal. It doesn't take much right now to set him off." Bob looked troubled. "Did something happen this morning?" I sighed and stared into my tea. "Yeah. Donny still has a lot of issues dealing with sex. When he saw you sitting here this morning he jumped to a conclusion and worked himself into a panic." The next words came out as a croak and my eyes teared. "He tried to kill himself." "Shit." from Buddy. Bob reached over and took my hand. "What happened?" "He tried to drown himself. I got to him just shortly after he went under. Only had about a teaspoon of water in him, so he came around pretty quick." "But why?" "Donny still thinks love and sex are the same thing. He assumed you and I had sex because you were in my robe this morning, and that made him think that I didn't love him anymore." "Oh, fuck. If I had known, I never would have stayed." "It's not your fault, Bob. Maybe I pushed things a little faster than I should have, I don't know. But it showed me that there is still a long way to go with Donny. That my actions can have a big impact on Donny's feelings." Buddy laid a big paw on my shoulder. "Judging from what I have seen today, I think you are doing the right things. That boy worships you, and you him. But it takes a lot of time to overcome what Donny has been through. So don't get down on yourself, and don't give up on Donny." "I will never give up on Donny. He has become too much a part of my life to turn my back." "Good. I have faith in you." "And I will second that." Bob added. "Now back to Deke. I guess that the weekly beatings explain the trace scarring I saw in my exam. Damn, how can someone do that?" I just shook my head, "I don't know." "Well, this information makes a decision even more important now." Buddy said. "What do we do about Deke? Doc, is there enough for a removal?" "In my opinion, yes. I don't think we can guarantee Deke's physical well being if he returns home right now." I knew where this was headed, especially when both Buddy and Bob turned and looked straight at me. "What?" Buddy grinned, "Well, he is already here. And look what has happened to Donny since he came here." Then Bob threw his two cents in, "Yeah, and Deke and Donny do get along real well." Fuck. What do I do now? TBC...
