Alienist, thanks for keeping me sane, or at least part way, so I can write this. DONNY Chapter 3 I think you could have knocked me over with a feather. Did I hear Bob right? Was he suggesting that Donny stay here? My mind reeled and the confusion must have shown on my face because Bob repeated his question, staring straight into my eyes. "How long can Donny stay here, Tom?" "What? Why? I don't...Ah, I guess so." "Tom, shut your mouth a minute and think. Can Donny stay here for a while? Maybe a long while." "What are you saying, Bob?" "We should wait for Buddy. He is on his way. But something happened last night and Donny needs a place to stay for a while. Are you willing?" What should I say? Me, a gay man, a boy lover, should I set myself up for trouble like this? Damn, he is a cute kid, and what I have seen of his body is....No! I have to be strong. He can stay but he is strictly hands off for sex. I have never touched a minor (except in my dreams) and I am not about to start now. I do like him. He seems so vulnerable. And starved for affection. I can give him affection without going any further. Can't I? Yes, I can. Plus, he is sooo cute! So open mouth and here goes. "Donny can stay as long as necessary." "Good, because, as I said, Buddy is on his way out here. And he is bringing some clothes for Donny, and a temporary order giving you custody." "What? Temporary custody! What the hell is this all about?" "Just wait for Buddy. He will explain it all to you." But Bob looked relieved. I suddenly realized that the subject of our conversation was still out in the kitchen demolishing a stack of pancakes and sausage. What would he think? Does he even want to stay here? What do I say to him? As if he was reading my mind Bob said, "Buddy will want to talk to Donny when he gets here. Do you want him to ask Donny if he wants to stay?" "No, it's my house. I'll ask once we find out what is going on." "Okay. Let's grab some more coffee. Buddy shouldn't be long." We went back to the kitchen, and Donny was just sitting, staring at his syrup drenched plate. I quickly put a smile on my face and looked around the kitchen, "I thought I cooked some pancakes and put `em on a plate around here. Did you see them?" Donny looked up and grinned. "Sure did, and they were good too. You sure are a good cook, just like my Mom." With that, his face fell again, and tears appeared in the corners of his eyes. I held out my arms, and Donny jumped up and into them. Bob smiled and cleared his throat, "I guess you two get along okay, huh?" I held Donny a minute longer, then pulled his arms from around me. I bent over to look into his eyes and said, "There an extra toothbrush under the sink. Your clothes are dry from last night, and it is time to get dressed. We have more company coming." It was strange how I just slipped into the mindset that we now lived together as I gave him a little push towards his room. "Okay, Tom. Excuse me, Doctor Davis." Donny went to the bathroom to brush his teeth, and I got his clothes out of the dryer and laid them on his bed. I came back into the kitchen and put a fresh pot of coffee on to brew. A minute later Donny came out dressed in his shorts and tee and said, "Well, thank you, Tom, for the food and letting me spend the night. I guess I better get home now." But he had a scared look on his face, and hope in his eyes. Bob and I looked at each other, and I said, "Hold on. We are going to have some more company coming so why don't you just stick around for a while, okay?" Donny grinned and his relief was almost palpable. "Sure. Can I have some more orange juice?" "You know where it is. Help yourself." We all looked to the front of the house as the crunch of a car pulling in was heard. "Buddy's here." stated Bob. "Ah, maybe I better leave." Donny got up and started edging toward the mud porch. "Donny, let me turn on my computer for you. Maybe you can find some games to play while Buddy, Bob and I talk, okay?" "Yeah, that would be great." said Donny and he immediately took off for my office. I followed and hit the button on the CPU to start booting. "Please don't surf the net, Donny. Just look in the games directory and you should find something. I promise we won't take long, but I do have some important stuff to discuss with Buddy and Bob." "Okay. You guys gonna talk about me?" I opened my arms and took Donny to my chest. "You don't mind, do you? I promise I'll only say nice things." Donny wrapped around me and squeezed. "It's okay. Tom?" "Yes, Donny." He buried his face into my shirt, but I heard the muffled "I love you." I had to blink several times to keep the tears from starting, and held him tight. "Thank you, Donny." I pried his arms from around my waist, and holding him at arms length, bent over so our faces were level. Looking into his eyes I said "I love you too." What was I saying? A kid I have only known for one day, and I am spouting off like that? But the warmth that was washing all over my body was telling me that it was true. My throat tightened and I pulled him in again. I kissed the top of his head as the emotions swirled through my body. And I am sure that if Donny were any stronger, he would have crushed at least my backbone, if not a rib or two. We stood in each others arms for a full minute, not speaking, barely breathing. I heard Bob opening the front door and inviting Buddy into the kitchen, but I didn't want to let go. It just felt so right. I kissed the top of Donny's head again, and loosened my arms. "I better go talk to them. Okay? You okay?" Donny slowly let go, not looking up, and nodding his head. He snuffled and wiped his finger under his nose, "Yeah, okay." "I'll be back as soon as I can." I didn't want to let go of him, but I was starting to think again, and watched him as he sat down at the computer. I patted his shoulder and in my worst Arnold voice "I'll be back." A giggle was my response, so I turned and went to the kitchen. Both men turned as I walked into the room. Buddy smiled and said "Nice to see you again, Tom. I had hoped it would be under better circumstances, but..." I nodded and refilled my mug, "So what the hell is going on?" "Sit and I'll fill you in. First, can Donny stay here?" "I already told Bob yes." "That's what he told me, but I wanted to hear you say it. It seems that Donny has had it really rough the past few months, and I need to know he will be taken care of." "I don't know what is going on, but if you think I will let Donny go somewhere where he might get hurt, you're wrong." "Good. My instincts were right. Okay, here's what I know, or can guess. Donny's dad Russ didn't take the death of his wife too well. He has been drinking and getting into fights pretty regular since she passed. I hauled him in a couple of times, but didn't push it cause I knew he had Donny at home. Well, what I didn't know was what he was doing to Donny. Also there have been some rumors going that Donny isn't growing into the man his old man wants." "What do you mean, Buddy?" "Oh, word is Donny likes boys more than girls, if you know what I mean." The grin on his face belied his words, so I shot him a dirty look. That just made him grin even harder. "Anyway, seems old Russ took to beatin' on the boy, and pretty badly from what the Doc tells me. Obviously something really set Russ off yesterday, because when I went by the house this morning, it was pretty torn up. Especially Donny's room. All his swimming trophies were busted up, and the furniture broken apart. Russ must have been in a real rage, cause the only clothes that were still in one piece I brought with me. And I can't find him. Have an alert out but no word yet. So Donny can't go home, and I don't want to put him in the system." With that Buddy unfolded an official looking paper and pushed it at me. "I talked to the judge, and he agreed to give you temporary custody." "How'd you do that? He doesn't know me at all." "It was on my recommendation, and he is my brother-in-law. So that was easy. We just had to know what you thought of all this. And there is a little money from the county." "Like I told Bob, Donny can stay here as long as is needed. And stuff your money. You know I don't need it." Buddy sat back and grinned again. "Okay. Just checkin'. His bag is in the living room. I gotta go and see if there is any word on his old man." "Hold on Buddy. Don't you think we should talk to the principle party here, and see if he wants to stay?" "From what Doc told me, I don't think that will be a problem. You let me know if you need anything." With that Buddy got up and walked out. I looked at Bob. "Well, what a revolting development this is." Bob grinned and stood. "I better be going too. Office is closed today, but still have patients. Don;t forget, Spring Break is over Tuesday and school is back in. Have Donny stand at the end of the road in around six forty five and the bus will stop. Good luck." Bob started for the door, then stopped. "Donny's real hurt I can't fix, but you can. Just give him lots of love. The bruises will clear in a couple of days. Take good care of him, Tom." Then he turned again and went out the door. I sat there staring into my mug of coffee, wondering what I had gotten myself into. Too many thoughts going every which way to really be called thinking, so I shook my head, and got up to head for the office. As I approached the door into the office I could hear the beeps and whistles of a pin ball game coming from the speakers, so I knew Donny was occupied for the moment. I stopped in the threshold and looked at blacked haired boy staring intently at the screen, body moving with the pinball, and little grunts and yeahs softly floating. The beauty of this boy was so breathtaking, how could anyone even think of harming a hair on his head? He finally finished the game, so I cleared my throat. He jumped and banged against the computer desk. "sorry, Donny. I didn't mean to startle you." "That's okay. Where's Doctor Davis and Buddy?" "They left. Can I ask you a question, a very important question?" He cocked his head to the side and frowned, just a little. "Sure. What?" "Let me sit down first." I sat on the leather sofa opposite the computer desk. Donny walked over and sat beside me. "Donny, would ou like to stay here for a while?" He grinned and said "Sure. I don't have to be home for a while." "That's not what I mean. I mean, do you want to stay, no, to live here?" Donny stared at me, questions running accross his face. "Are you sure? Do you want me to stay?" "Yes, Donny, I want you to stay." TBC...
