I spent the day with Gerald and Tony learning to do farm work all over again. I found some muscles that I forgot that I had. Gary was between jobs and I gave him a job helping me farm. He moved into a little employee cabin that we had for a single employee. Gerald and Tony were in the other two houses. They were both married and Tony had a little boy of two. Both Gary and I weren't strangers to farm work and neither of us were afraid of hard work. Joel was walking around with his head in the clouds. He was like a new kid entirely. To top it all off, he and Gavin were both on the baseball team and were starters. Gary, Gerald, Tony and families and I always had front row seats. Sid and Lois sat directly behind us. So our Saturdays were spent watching the boys play ball. I got Joel a car for his birthday. I let him pick one out and he chose a Volkswagen Beetle. I thought for sure that he would take a big pickup truck with a loud boom box and noisy tail pipes. He said every one had one of those and that he wanted a Beetle. I guess if I want a big truck, I will just have to buy it for myself. School came to an end and both boys got a job as lifeguard at the local swimming pool. I offered them a job on the farm. They said they wanted to work at the pool so they could watch the girls in their tiny little bikinis. I think they just wanted to watch the boys in their tight Speedos. Gary and I became a couple and he moved into the farmhouse with me. Joel wanted to move into Gary's cottage. There was to much to remind him of his mother and father in the house. He was still having a hard time dealing with all of this. He thought that without all the constant reminders, that he would evidently be able to cope. This was satisfactory with me. If fact, his counselor had suggested the same thing.*****Church services were just getting over and the congregation started leaving. Much to their surprise, there was a large group of protesters blocking the drive way. All carrying signs and chanting "Repent Fags or Burn in hell!" "Dave, call 911 and have them send several police cars to clear the drive way. I have a way to disperse this crowd, only it will involve you and Joel.. It will mean coming out of the closet for the two of us." "Gary, I am not ashamed of what we are doing. I love you and will stand by you no matter what. I hope you know what you're doing! I say "Go for it!" Gary move toward the crowd. He grabbed one of the bullhorns from one of the protesters. "May I have your attention, Please?" "Look you, Queer! We don't have to listen to your non-sense. We all know that your are a sinner and will go to hell for your actions," shouted Rev. Charles. "People, what I have to say, involves the Reverend here. Please listen to me?""Don't listen to him. He is just going to tell a bunch of lies." The crowd suddenly became very quite. Gary went on speaking." "People, I know that you know about my past. I was a male prostitute. I know that many of you townspeople were some of my paying customers. I am not here to name names. Your secrets are safe with me. I only want you to know about one person and you will be surprised who it is!" "Don't listen to him. He is just trying to cover up for what he is . A No Good, Queer and should be arrested." "Yes, people, It is none other than Rev. Charles Brown! He was a regular customer of mine. I know that he was using church money that you paid him to be your minister." "Lies, nothing but lies!" shouted Rev. Charles. "I bet that after an investigation, you'll find that he had sex with several young boys from his congregation. I know he kept telling me that I was not as good as some of the boys that he was using." A hush fell over crowd. "I did not such thing!" countered the Reverend." "Yes, you did! You're are guilty! You did the same thing to me!" said another boy about 14. He was joined by 3 other boys, all agreeing with the first two. "Officer, arrest the Reverend. I will sign a complaint against him." said the father of the first boy. All the other fathers agreed. "Reverend, you are not longer our minister. We will have all your stuff removed from the parsonage and put in storage. You can decide what is to be done with it and you will receive a bill for the storage fee!" said one of Church trustees. The Reverend was handcuffed and put in a police car. The crown was very silent and stared leaving. One woman walked up to our minister and told him she was leaving her church and would like to join ours. Several others told the minister the same thing. "Our doors are open for everyone. Everyone is welcomed regardless of race, creed, gender or sexual orientation. We believe in the Golden Rule." People came up to Gary and told him that they were glad that he spoke up and put an end to Reverend Brown's rule and they were afraid to cross him. They considered him to be very vindictive and was afraid of what he might do.*****Four more boys came forward and Reverend Brown was charged with 7 cases of sexual assault on minors. He was found guilty on all accounts and was given a very long prison sentence. His church was not able to find a minister to take his place. The trustees called a special meeting of all the members of the church. The members voted to close the church and to give the church building to CSD to be used as a safe haven for abused children. The community had not been prepared for something of this magnitude and started the healing process. Everyone realized that the whole community had to work together if they wanted to achieve the goal of unity. Gary had been the one who stepped forward to stop Rev. Brown and all the hatred that he had stirred up. The community leaders came to him and asked him for his help in bring the community back together. He gladly accepted the challenge. To be continued
