Fritz ******************************************************************************** I Love Corey, Chapter Thirty-six When I woke up, I was still tired. Yesterday's game had worn me out. At least my voice had mostly recovered. Not being able to talk was something I wasn't sure I could survive. Corey looked very desirable sleeping beside me. I would have loved to just admire him for a while but nature called. My getting out of bed disturbed him and he joined me in the bathroom where we relieved ourselves. A quick shower and brushing of teeth prepared me to face the day. We must have both been somewhat tired as there was almost no playing around in the shower, just washing. When done, we wandered off towards the kitchen where I plugged the perk in and Corey whined about the lack of oranges. He found a can of frozen juice and prepared it while I got the paper. It wasn't long until Dianne showed up. She got a glass of juice and poured us both a cup of coffee. I was still trying to make sense out of the editorial section of the paper. A half of cup of coffee and the words started to make sense. The only problem was that I wasn't sure the writers of those words had any idea of what they were writing about. I finally gave up in disgust. At least my mind was now functioning well enough to carry on a conversation. Dianne and I discussed what she'd purchased at the sale yesterday. She'd managed to buy everything she wanted for thirty-eight hundred dollars. She was happy because that would get her and her family pretty well set up for housekeeping. She told me the furniture was old but would do. The same was true of the appliances and the best part was that she hoped to be in by next weekend. It sounded like a good deal to me. Plus, that would get her out of the house and I wouldn't have to worry about what Corey and I did being discovered. She'd be happy and so would I. About that time JJ and LT came straggling in. I asked them what they wanted for breakfast and finally managed to coax an answer out of JJ. He suggested Eggs Benedictine. I chuckled and told him it was Eggs Benedict and checked to make sure I had everything I needed to fix them. Soon I was busy making Hollandaise sauce and poaching eggs. I talked the boys into helping and it didn't take all that long before breakfast was ready. I watched them inhale what had to be at least a thousand calories and wondered how long that would last them. JJ was beaming because he thought I'd let him make a decision. You could just see it in his face. Maybe now he'd start feeling like he belonged here. Of course Corey didn't complain about the meal as it was his favorite breakfast. After the kitchen was cleaned up we managed to get the rest of the laundry washed before it was time for church. JJ and LT weren't happy but at least there was no whining. Dianne was going to go help with the rest of the estate sale and took her kids with her. That left the boys and me alone in attending church. Fr. George talked about loving your fellow man and included the poem "Abou Ben Adhem" by Leigh Hunt.* When the service was over and we headed home to change clothes, I got some interesting conversation from the boys about the poem. It made an impression on them, especially JJ. He was still talking about it when we were headed for the trap club. I let JJ and LT watch a couple of practice rounds before I rented one of the traps and started their lessons. It wasn't long until I had several of the club members helping and the lessons went fairly well. JJ and LT were about like most beginning shooters and didn't score very well. Some of the club members looked at that and immediately started trying to teach them to shoot. I remembered that was about the way it was when I started. There always seemed to be a bunch of the members in any of the clubs that were eager to help new shooters. By the time the lesson was about over they were doing a little better but that was about all you could say. Corey was still getting used to his new gun since this was the first time he'd used it. His scores started to pick up towards the end of the lesson and he seemed happy. A couple of hours of lessons was enough and I could see that their concentration level was going down, so we quit. Then I got talked into taking part in some of the club's fun shoots. It was one of those days when I hit almost everything I shot at. We shot a couple of Annie Oakley's, some bushwhackers and even a Custer. I won almost all of them. The amount of money wasn't much, but laughing and kidding around with the other shooters was a blast. The boys seemed to enjoy just listening to all the wisecracks being exchanged. Once in a while I'd have a day like this and shoot well. The rest of the time wasn't quite as good. No matter, I always enjoyed it. We left about four and stopped at Downie's. We were doing fine at filling the cart when JJ showed up with a package of macaroni and cheese mix. I let him put it in the cart but figured I would try to see if he liked what I normally made. I usually put some diced ham, some mushrooms sautéed in butter and four kinds of cheese in mine. So far no one had ever complained about it. I figured I'd just make both kinds and see which he liked the best. If he liked the mix, I could fix that for him and something else for the rest of us. All of the boys made sure I didn't forget the oranges. Downie's was having a sale on them so I grabbed two crates. Then it was off for home. The boys had eaten a hamburger and fries at the trap club so they could wait until dinner was ready. I'd decided to fix some hamburger patties to go with the macaroni and cheese. I was going to fix the patties with chopped onion and eggs to bind, smothered in a mushroom gravy. The green beans looked fresh and I decided on a green salad for the rest of the meal. There was too much green to look good but the meal should be okay. I knew Bob liked all of those things and he would be over tonight to give Corey a lesson. It looked like things were under control. On the way home I swung past Dianne's new house to see when she would be home. Of course we had to take the tour. It really was a pretty nice house and some of the furnishings were in excellent condition even if they were older. She was filling me in on all the changes she wanted to make and was really happy with the house and the way things were going. It was now the end of the sale so I left the JJ and LT to help and went home. I'd have left Corey but he had an art lesson scheduled. Dianne could bring them home in her minivan when they were done helping Vern and his boys help clean things up. About all they were going to do tonight was box up the stuff that didn't sell so it could be donated to some charities. They'd been talking and decided that as soon as everything was hauled off, Dianne could move in. Chuck O'Reilly, Vern's friend, would give her a break on the rent for doing the rest of the clean-up and painting. With a little luck she hoped to move in on Wednesday. There was an extra bedroom so they could rotate around while they painted. I even talked my boys into helping. They needed to learn how to do such things and I figured it would do them good to help someone. Dianne said it would be a couple of weeks before the painting because she wanted a little time to think about some of the colors. In the meantime they would scrub things in preparation for it. Bob arrived just before we finished cleaning the shotguns. We continued cleaning the shotguns while visiting. When we finished with the guns, he and Corey headed for Corey's room for the lesson. When they had left, I started dinner. The lesson was about half over and dinner about half done when Dianne and crew showed up. JJ and LT immediately went to Corey's room to watch the rest of the lesson. The thought went through my mind that I needed to ask them if they would like lessons in art. I still didn't know enough about them to have any ideas as to what they liked and disliked. I needed to do something about that as soon as possible. Things had been so fouled up I hadn't gotten around to getting to know them and their likes and dislikes yet. The table looked a little strange with two bowls of macaroni and cheese. I suggested to JJ that he might like to try a little of mine to see if he liked it. He took a big serving of the mix one and a very small one of mine. The rest of the crew seemed to think mine looked the best. I wanted to laugh when JJ had seconds. I managed to keep quiet when he piled a huge serving of my version on his plate. That made it pretty apparent that he liked mine the best and I wouldn't have to fix the mix type anymore. When he took thirds of it I finally couldn't help it and laughed out loud. He looked sort of embarrassed but that didn't seem to stop him from eating the whole serving. In fact, I couldn't believe he could hold all the food he did. He ate like he hadn't had anything for years. By the time he got to the last bite, he sat there for a while looking at it before he finally ate it. After that he sat there with a kind of goofy grin on his face. When we finally stood up his stomach looked like he'd suddenly become about five month's pregnant. I glanced at the rest of the boys and discovered they looked about the same. What was left of the meal didn't look like it could fill a small dog. About the only thing there was enough left of to make a decent sized serving was the mix version of the macaroni and cheese. Three and a half pounds of hamburger, to which I'd added a half pound of sausage, was down to two small patties. The beans were gone and so was almost all of the salad. While the boys did most of the damage, the adults had done their share. For some reason a rather simple meal had really hit the spot. All of us were stuffed. Bob and Corey finished Corey's lesson. The rest of us sat around trying to let our dinner settle. Most of the talk was about Dianne's new home and how things seemed to be going there. She was thrilled that she had managed to make a deal for most of the furnishings. She said about all she had to add was people and things would be about right. I took that to mean that such things as pots and pans and tableware were part of the things she'd bought. I already knew about the appliances and they included everything from a washer and dryer to a microwave. Most were older models and weren't worth much but still functioned and would be perfectly satisfactory for a while. It's amazing how little used furniture and appliances are actually worth. A washer and dryer set that may have cost a thousand dollars might only be worth a hundred dollars, yet would still function properly and sometimes last for many years. I was still using the washer and dryer set that had been in my house when I bought it. Until there was a problem with them, I saw no reason to replace them. I had remodeled the kitchen before I moved in because I wanted the big commercial style range. I'd been disappointed until Corey moved in because I didn't really need it when living by myself. It wasn't that it didn't do everything I thought it should; it was just kind of overkill. With the addition of JJ and LT I was now thrilled to have it. It was just so handy to have the grill and lots of burners. The only time I'd really ever needed it was a couple of years ago when Uncle Matt and his family came for Thanksgiving. Now I was starting to really appreciate it. Bob finished the lesson and left. I took the game tape of our next opponent and went to the living room and started reviewing it and making plans. The next thing I knew I had four boys watching with me and offering comments and suggestions. While they might not be John Madden, they really helped. One would notice something and bring it to everyone's attention and we'd discuss it. In a surprisingly short time we were done and I had a plan that I hoped would work. I could see why our opponent had been ranked number one. They had some places I thought we could exploit but they were big, fast, and solid. This was going to be a real challenge. I really hoped the weather would be dry. If not, it looked like we might be in for a long afternoon. Even with good weather we'd have to play an almost perfect game to win. A wet field would make that much more difficult. It was now way past bedtime. I thanked the boys for their help and chased them off to take their showers. By the time I'd finished putting things away and closing things down for the night Corey was done with his shower and it was my turn. He was asleep by the time I finished and just shifted to his favorite position when I got into bed. It was the start of a new week and I felt great when I woke up. I couldn't wait for Dianne and her children to move to their own place. She'd needed the help but it had sure fouled up my love life. Corey had whined about that several times. I'd whined right back. We both agreed that it probably wasn't a good idea to do much with Jimmy right across the hall and the chance that Dianne might come upstairs and hear us. I was resigned to having JJ and LT making smart remarks about us and we could do the same to them. I trusted them not to tell although I wasn't sure why. I just wasn't sure an outsider would understand and keep quiet. In fact I was pretty sure there would be no understanding and that would result in lots of problems. We'd been real careful and made a supreme effort to try to be quiet but that had really cut down on any games in bed. Corey was still sleeping and I really wanted to initiate something but gave up and started the normal morning routine. If she didn't move to her own house soon, we'd be down to jacking off in the shower. The day went well. Of course the students wouldn't or couldn't seem to pay any attention in class but that would change when the next game was over. We'd either be Northern California State Champions or we wouldn't, but at least it would be over. This was going to be a weird week because Friday was an in-service day and we wouldn't have a practice. Instead we would travel to Sacramento and stay overnight. The community had raised money for the trip with the understanding that, if we got beat before the championship game, the money would be given to a couple of charities. When you donated, you selected a charity and the two most popular ones would split the money. If there was any left, after the trip, it would be treated the same way. In less than a week the boosters club had raised more than enough and it looked like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross would get a few hundred dollars each. The boosters had made arrangements to charter several of the school buses to take fans to the game. The team would have one bus on Friday and there would be two buses full of fans accompanying us with two more buses leaving Saturday morning. There was also going to be a caravan of cars with both sets of buses. Any member of the team could travel with his parents as long as they would be traveling on Friday. I was going to take the Gator so I could haul JJ and LT. Fred and Mike would also ride with us and Vern was going to drive the team bus. Nancy would drive down in the evening because she wouldn't be done with work soon enough. Vern was a back-up bus driver and sometimes drove activity buses and once in a while had to drive a regular route. When he did, it made a long day for him but since it didn't happen that often he was happy with the situation and liked the extra money. The week seemed to fly by. I worked the team hard in practice and worried that I only had four days to prepare for the game. We were lucky in that we had managed to escape the last game with no real injuries. In fact the whole season had been that way. We'd had a few players miss a game or two but for the most part we'd escaped serious injury. We were as close to full strength as it was possible to be. Wednesday evening was fouled up what with helping Dianne and her kids move. It wasn't that there was much to move, but it still created some problems. They were hauling their clothes and the few things she'd gotten out of their old house before Terry stopped her. That meant that dinner was eaten in shifts. They were making a trip when it was done and we decided to eat rather than wait for them. We'd finished before they got back but they were happy about the move and it didn't hurt the spaghetti to sit. By the time she was moved and the boys did their homework it was late. In fact it was too late for anything but going to bed. The boys had all been yawning while they finished their homework. I couldn't wait for things to get back to normal, at least as normal as this place would ever be. I don't know why we bothered to have school Thursday. None of the kids would pay any attention in class. I was about ready to tear my hair out. At least the team paid attention. The only thing was, they were in a really weird mood. I couldn't read them. I wasn't sure if they were worried about losing or just totally spaced out from all the excitement. Most of the wisecracks were missing and they really concentrated on practice. They didn't seem nervous but the lack of joking worried me. I didn't know what to make of it. They'd never acted like this before. It was almost like they were on a mission. They didn't shout at each other. Instead there were quiet conversations and I could see hand gestures about how to do certain things. In fact the team members had been the only students that seemed to pay any attention in class. They were subdued and attentive. I just wasn't sure what to make of the whole thing. Thursday evening was a mess. I had to get all my grading caught up and we had to pack clothes. That involved washing some things the boys wanted to wear and everyone was running around the house getting ready while I was in the office finishing my work. My usual routine was to have most of it done the night before. Then I could do the rest on the in service day. This time I was leaving at noon so I had to finish things early. Normally that wouldn't have been a problem but having Dianne here and adding three boys to the house had interrupted my routine. It was no longer just me in the house and my having all the time to do whatever I wanted. Now there were three boys that needed to be fed and they always seemed to have questions that I needed to answer and homework to check. Things were a lot different from last year. I'd thought I was busy then but this was really busy. I finally sent them to bed and spent another hour getting all my work caught up. When I couldn't think of anything I had left to do, I went to bed. I don't know how he does it but Corey was soon in his usual position. He just seems to get there without doing anything. It was almost like he has homing radar that puts his head on my chest as soon as it's within range. I couldn't kiss anything but hair so instead I sniffed that hair. It had a shampoo and Corey smell. A couple of good sniffs helped relax me and I soon fell asleep. I was ready to wring their necks. From the second we woke up they were asking questions and jumping around and all I wanted to do was drink some coffee and get my mind in gear. Somehow I managed to fix breakfast and get ready. A quick review of the security camera's pictures and I was ready to leave for school. I told the boys to pack their things in the Gator and I'd drive the pickup. It was a relief to get away and head for school. It was nice and quiet in the pickup. We spent the morning reviewing students to see if any of them needed help with anything. This was one of the things I liked about our school. All of the teachers were supposed to watch and see if any of the students were showing any signs of having problems with their studies and any changes in attitude. At this meeting we shared anything we'd noticed. We also included what we heard on the grapevine. It was surprising what you learned that way. Most of us were active in the community and there was always gossip one could pick up and sometimes it explained things. Typically, family problems were accompanied by a drop in grades. We tried to keep an eye out so we could help. Of course the boys came up and I was happy to hear that there'd been no real drop in grades. Corey continued to improve and JJ and LT had been a little erratic but seemed back on track. While all of us had access to the grades of any student, it was at these meetings we got to discuss any changes we observed in our students. It gave us a much better over all picture. Sometimes there was something happening in their lives that would account for such changes and, if we didn't know of any such thing, we could start checking around. There'd been almost no observed hostility towards JJ and LT but everyone was still watching. What always amazed me was that we could get through so many students in such a short time. It helped that most of the kids were pretty decent and most of the homes in the area were stable. I shudder to think about how it must be in some schools. We had the advantage of a low student turnover. That gave us a better chance to get to know our students and their problems. By the time the morning was over we'd covered that part of the meeting and the afternoon would be short. All we had left to do was turn in our grade and assessment reports for the first part of the year. In one sense that was silly because the grades were already in the system but Jerry liked to have the paper record and the assessment sheets would be added to the files. The afternoon was usually spent finishing them but since I was leaving, I'd finished mine last night. I turned them in and headed for home. I knew I'd find three hyper kids there. I was wrong. I found four hyper kids. Dianne had dropped Jimmy off and left a note apologizing for forgetting to call me. It made perfectly good sense. She had made arrangements for Cindy for the day but didn't want to leave Jimmy alone with nothing to do. She'd called a few minutes after I'd left and since I'd left my cell phone home she couldn't get in touch with me. Corey had told her he thought it would be fine with me and to bring Jimmy on over. He seemed worried that I'd be mad at him but cheered right up when I got him aside and told him I was proud of him for taking the initiative and making a good decision. You could almost see him swell up with pride. I could only marvel at the changes in him since I'd first met him. Back then he'd never have dreamed of making such a decision. We were in my bedroom where no one could see us so I gave him a big kiss to go along with my praise. I fixed lunch and after it, checked to see if they had forgotten anything. When it appeared they hadn't, we headed for school to meet the team and get everything under way. I had four hyper boys and they were jabbering away like crazy. I was beginning to wonder if I'd survive the trip. Maybe I could knock them in the head and they'd be quiet for a while. I thought about putting them on the bus but decided that Vern had more than he could handle. It was pretty apparent that my four were just like the rest of the students. All the team members were there early and we debated about leaving early but waited to make sure all the boosters had arrived. It's a good thing we did because there were a few stragglers. Finally everyone was there that we knew about and we headed out. It was quite a caravan. Three busses accompanied by a bunch of cars. I snickered to myself when I thought about riding a school bus that far. Most of the fans hadn't ridden one since they were in school and probably didn't remember just how uncomfortable they were for such a long ride. We'd made arrangements for a stop in Orland for a break. Then it was on to Sacramento and our hotel. There would be plenty of adults so hopefully we could keep everyone under control. We'd no more than started when the arguments started over which radio station to listen too. I finally solved that by shutting the radio off and telling them it wouldn't be turned on until they could agree on what to listen to. I think they were starting to get the message because things calmed down and it didn't take them long to pick a station they would all accept. As the trip continued they seemed to relax and settle in. I guess the fact that we were finally on our way was responsible for that. Mike pulled out a book and started reading and the others were telling jokes and giggling. Why are jokes about bodily functions popular with that age group? I could hear snippets that seemed to be about passing gas followed by lots of laughter. Mike was happy reading his book and riding shotgun. About then I handed them a couple of DVDs. They hadn't noticed the overhead mounted player before. There'd always been so much going on when we had used the Gator that it just slipped past everyone. The other one hadn't been equipped with one. It wasn't long until they were happily engrossed in a movie. At Orland we had a break. Everyone managed to visit the restroom and get something to drink along with some snacks. We made it to the hotel about six-thirty. It was about seven when everyone was signed in and assigned rooms. Fortunately a lot of us had made reservations beforehand or it would have been a real mess. The kids were no problem as the boosters had circulated lists and had the rooms all assigned. It was the parents that created the problems. Some had gone through the booster club and others had called directly. Once we were all checked in it was time for dinner. The boosters had chosen the hotel because it had several restaurants close to it. They'd gotten menus with the prices and each member of the team was given money for his meal. Each student could have anything he wanted but could only spend twelve dollars of the booster's money. If he spent less, he got to keep what was left. If he spent more, he had to make up the difference. They'd also arranged for discounts at several of the restaurants and the prices on the menus reflected that discount. With a little discussion the kids separated into groups that wanted to go to specific restaurants. The parents soon split up to accompany them. My boys decided they wanted to go to the Olive Garden. I had fifteen other members of the team that decided to join us. Add in eleven parents and we made a good sized group. It was only a three block walk so no one worried about cars. A twenty-five per-cent discount made a lot of the meals very reasonable. Still, it would take most of the kid's money because you still had the sales tax. I made sure some of the parents with each group would bail out any student who accidentally overspent. Sometimes it was easy to forget the cost of drinks and sales tax. The adults were going to take care of the tips. We had to wait a while. We'd called and made reservations but to come up with room for thirty still took time. The kids were ready to eat anything by the time we were seated. The salads and bread sticks took a major hit. I should have worried that they might eat too much before their meal but I figured they'd find room when their dinner arrived. I wasn't disappointed. We adults managed to keep them somewhat under control and the management didn't seem upset with the group and I didn't notice any of the other customers scowling at us. It was after nine when we got back to our rooms. I couldn't believe it. All the kids seemed to have snacks with them and they started right in on them even though they'd just eaten. We finally got everyone in his own rooms about ten-thirty. They had orders to go to sleep but I wouldn't have bet they followed that order very quickly. Corey set the tone when he walked out of the shower with just a towel and then went to bed. I could see JJ's and LT's eyes about bug out but noticed they followed suit. By the time my turn rolled around I figured I might just as well do the same. When I turned the lights out Corey was in his usual position and I noticed LT was spooned against JJ's back. It didn't take long to fall asleep. I woke up first. Thank God for the in-room coffee maker. I'd even managed to get a paper before the boys stirred. When it seemed like the right time I started calling rooms. In most cases it took several rings before I was rewarded with the sound of sleepy voices. By eight the whole group was assembled to head for breakfast. There was a cafeteria style restaurant a couple of blocks away and we all walked over to it. A group of the kids and some of the adults had tried it last night and said it was pretty good. I could see the managers eyes light up when we showed up. I figured that would change by the time we left. He had an all you can eat special and everyone wanted it. His expression slowly changed from happiness to sorrow as the kids kept filling their plates. The cooks would no more than get one container filled and our mob would empty it. I doubt that he made much profit by the time the kids were done. The only thing that saved him from bankruptcy was the number of adults. After giving the team a little time for their breakfast to settle, we had a walk through of the game plan. There was a meeting room we used and we just went over things to make sure everyone remembered what he was supposed to do. After that was done we had a couple of hours to kill. There was a mall close by so everyone thought it would be a good idea to check it out. After laying out some ground rules, we all went shopping. By now about half of the team member's parents were here so we split into groups to see what was available. I had a few extra kids with me but we still managed to get a bunch of things JJ and LT needed. Today was mostly clothes. We still needed to do more shopping for them but at least it took some of the pressure off. We even found them each a blazer and some slacks. I knew we'd have to make another shopping trip as soon a football season was over. After lunch it was time to head over to the stadium. I'd wanted to check it out before the game but that hadn't been possible. Our game was at three and there was another game at seven-thirty in the next higher class. We'd have to almost double our school size to move up to that classification. Our opponent would have to play in that class next year. They'd grown just enough this year to put them in a higher class but since all the schedules were set up, they got to play one last year in our class. We had a few minutes to look things over before it was necessary to start getting ready. The kids were impressed with the size of the stadium. The grandstands would hold almost twenty thousand people and the field was in super shape. The only problem was it was starting to rain. There wasn't much wind but the rain was falling hard enough to make the field wet and it didn't look like it would let up. After we suited up we had some warm-up drills. Then it was time to play. The grandstand had several thousand people in it and more were pouring in. I sent our captains, Brad Conner and Jonathon Miller, out for the coin toss. We lost. The first half didn't go well. They were bigger and they managed to move the ball on the wet field. If it hadn't been for a couple of fumbles we'd have been blown out. As it was, they managed to score twenty points and if it hadn't been for a fumble recovery and the ensuing touchdown we'd have been held scoreless. We were only down by thirteen points but on a day like today, that looked big. Our running game wasn't working and so far neither was our passing. Brad kept over-throwing his receivers. He wasn't getting much time to throw so I couldn't really blame him. Half-time and I went over how they were beating us on the line. I showed a couple of the kids how to change their blocking assignments for pass protection. I'd tried to show them during the game but they were so excited they wouldn't listen. Now at least they listened to me. There wasn't much else I could do except offer them encouragement and point out that they weren't out of the game yet. Half-time seemed to fly by and soon it was time to finish the game. The second half started better. We quickly marched down the field and scored. The only problem was, so did our opponent. The second time we got the ball Brad faked a pass and bootlegged it around the right side for a touchdown. It was the longest play from scrimmage we'd had all year. He went eighty-one yards on the play. That seemed to rattle our opponent. Three plays later, they had to kick. We got the ball back just short of midfield and the quarter ended. Twelve minutes to go. The blocking changes allowed Brad more time to throw and he started really picking our opponent apart. It didn't take long before we scored again and when Mike kicked the point after we were ahead for the first time all day. I don't know what their coach said to them but they roared back on their next possession and scored again. We were once again down by six points and time was running out. Our next play from scrimmage and Jimmy sprained his ankle. That took any chance of a running game we had out of the picture. His back-up was just too small to be effective. Against smaller teams he'd done pretty well but he was just not strong enough or big enough to do much against a team this big and well coached. Then they made a mistake. They committed a defensive hold and that gave us another first down. We'd now made it to mid-field and there was less than sixty seconds left. Three plays later we had one yard to go for a first down and were out of time outs. I signaled in a play but Brad misread it and called a different one. When they lined up I could see it but could do nothing about it. His call was better than mine. He faded back and rolled right. Just before he got tackled he threw back across the field and Jimmy's replacement, Sean Johnson, caught the ball and streaked down the sideline for a score. It was now on Mike's foot. I knew Mike's parents were in the stands and their hearts had to be in their throats just like mine. When the kick was blocked I about died. However there was a flag on the play. Off sides gave us another chance. The team lined up and tried again. A muffed snap and I thought it was all over. We'd have to try overtime. However Brad grabbed the ball and started running. They grabbed his face mask and we got another shot at it. I was about ready to collapse. Talk about a cardiac finish. By now there was only two seconds left on the clock. Would you believe they jumped off sides again? Only this time they didn't manage to block the kick. It sailed through the center of the uprights. I was stunned. All I could do was stand there. About that time I got the ice water poured over me. That stopped the just standing there. Boy that stuff's cold. There was a bunch of ice cubes and bottles of Gatorade where I'd been standing. The kids were jumping up and down and I was still trying to understand that we'd done it. Of course the officials had to announce that we'd declined the penalty and the point was good. When he raised his arms signaling that, the team mobbed me. The next thing I knew that was a big pile of us rolling around on the ground and hugging each other. I about got crushed. There must have been half the team piled on top of me. It took a while to get things calmed down so the trophies could be presented. I was in a daze. I'd never dreamed the team would be this good. I haven't got a clue what I said. It must have been all right because there was a bunch of cheering and we finally headed for the locker room to shower. I couldn't see much for all the strobes that had gone off during the presentation ceremony. I was just sitting there trying to understand what had happened when the kids started getting dressed. The next thing I realized was that all of them were in their fancy briefs and lined up in front of me, giggling like crazy. They didn't need Champaign, they were drunk with happiness. I got up and gave each of them a hug and told them how proud I was of them. After that they finished dressing and we left. It had been quite a day. I was still soaked but I didn't mind. I had dry clothes at the hotel. Everyone insisted we eat together. That meant the same place we'd had breakfast. I could see the managers look of disappointment when we all came trouping in. I felt sorry for him. Two hits in one day was almost too much. He put on a shaky smile and greeted us. He did a little better because there were more adults. A bunch of the fans that had come to the game joined us. We filled the place up. They kept running out of things but the cooks kept cooking and the kids kept eating. Finally there was room for the last of us. The roast beef was gone but they'd substituted chicken fried steaks. In fact there were a couple of things they had to substitute. They just couldn't cook things like roasts quick enough. It really didn't make any difference to me. I was still too excited to even notice what I ate. It filled me up and that was all that was important. I was still in such a state of shock I could have probably eaten sawdust. Normally food seems to wind the kids up. Tonight it seemed to calm them down. Maybe it was just that they were running out of gas. It was a happy but tired group of kids that finally made it back to the hotel. I didn't even have to tell them to go to bed. Soon after we got back, they crashed. I wasn't far behind them. Breakfast was a leisurely meal. The busses were going to leave at ten so everyone had plenty of time for breakfast. There was an IHOP a few block away and the boys and I decided to eat there. We got done eating about eight-thirty and just goofed around until the busses left. Then we went shopping for some more things for JJ and LT. It was a lot more relaxed without the rest of the team to bother us. Fred and Mike rode home with Nancy and Jimmy rode with Dianne who'd driven down yesterday. It was just the four of us. We found some posters for their rooms and some other things they needed. Then it was off for home. We all had a good conversation on the trip home. Everybody was relaxed and in a good mood and I learned a lot about JJ and LT. We talked about feelings and love and what I expected of them. Other things were what they might like to study in college, how they felt about their parents and friends, and anything that popped into anyone's mind. Towards the end, I think the boys were becoming more comfortable with me and felt better about living with Corey and me. We laid out rules about having guests, how I expected them to handle their allowances, and how to handle disputes. All in all, it was a great conversation. I felt a lot better about having them live with me and hopefully they felt better about doing so. This was one of the first chances we'd had to talk where nothing could bother or interrupt us. There'd been so much going on that we hadn't had time to feel each other out except for a few things. It was just after six when we got to Downie's. I was too tired to cook so a couple of deli chickens and some other things and we went home. I should have the telephone taken out. Well, maybe just do away with the answering machine. The light was blinking and one look at it and I was almost afraid to check the cell phone which was in its charger where I'd forgotten it. While the kids were putting dinner on the table I started in on the messages. I was beginning to think everyone in California that had a phone had called. I returned a few and all they wanted to do was rehash the game and tell me what a great job the team had done. I wonder what made them think I didn't know that. We ate dinner and I went back to the phone. Thank God it had run out of recording space. Then there was voice mail on the cell phone. It took almost two hours to clear the whole mess up. I managed to keep the calls short by pleading I had others to return. The boys were watching the boob tube when I finished and that only left one call to make. I fixed myself a drink and called Uncle Matt and filled him in. That turned into a half-hour visit and by the time it was over I sent the boys to bed. It was our usual bed time. Corey was eager and so was I. I'd made sure to close JJ's door when I said good night to the two of them. Ours was closed and latched and I didn't really care if they heard anything. Since Dianne had showed up, this was the first time we'd had to really do anything without fear. We wound up kissing and rubbing against each other to start with. It was so nice to just be able to love each other. Surprisingly enough, neither of us was in any hurry. We just enjoyed ourselves with kisses, touches, and each other's scent. We weren't worried about noise or anyone catching us. We took turns sucking on each other's tongue. I always loved his flavor and to be able to just enjoy it was wonderful. No worries, just pleasure. For the first time in several weeks it was just the two of us to worry about and that made everything right. I could care less what JJ and LT were doing and if they were even thinking of us. Right now all my attention was on Corey. Nothing else existed. It wasn't long before the kissing gave way to licking and nibbling. When his teeth started teasing my ear lobes I soon quit thinking about any thing else. His tongue would make a few swipes after he nibbled some and every time he did that, shivers went through me. We kept rolling around and when he was on top he got to do the nibbling and, when I was on top, it was my turn. I loved it when he was lying on top of me. I could wrap my arms around him and hold him tight against me. He was so warm and alive in my arms. I could run my hands all over his back and butt. Just feeling him that way was a real turn on. The fact that he was enjoying it was a bonus. I could feel his vertebrae with my fingers. Each one seemed precious. Running my hands over his shoulder blades produced a feeling of wonder that someone so perfect was willing to share himself with me. I just had a hard time accepting that he loved me. There were so many boys his age he could have selected but he selected me. What made me so lucky? Why was I so blessed? We rolled again and I could feel his hands wandering over my back and sides. My tongue started at his ear and worked its way down to a nipple. It was already standing proud and firm. I gently scraped my teeth across it and I could feel a shudder go through him. It was accompanied by a gasp and a moan. As I continued licking and nibbling on that nipple, the moans continued and got louder. They were accompanied by twitches and jerks of his body. My next stop was an armpit. We hadn't showered since morning and it had a somewhat sour salty flavor. I started washing it with my tongue. Lots more shivers and shudders accompanied that action. The moans got louder and more insistent. When the flavor was gone I changed sides. He rolled enough to give me good access to that armpit and once again I could savor his flavor. In much too short a time the flavor was gone, licked clean by my tongue. By now he was panting. Suddenly he was on top. Now it was his turn to do to me what I had done to him. His slightly raspy tongue sent shivers and shudders through me as he swabbed my armpits. I could hear myself making noises but they didn't really register. They were just part of the background to what was happening. Enough firkytoodling. Foreplay was great but it was now time for the main event. He pivoted around and my goal was in sight. There was a drop of clear nectar on the tip and I couldn't wait to have it. My head moved forward and my tongue reached for that drop. It was something to savor. I moved my head back and rolled that drop around in my mouth. That way I could admire the source and enjoy the flavor at the same time. I watched that beautiful cock twitch with each of his heart beats. It sprouted from a small patch of light brownish hair. Of all the cocks I'd ever seen, it was as close to perfect as anything I'd ever seen. The proportions were ideal. It had a slight upward curve. It was everything I could ever want in a cock. Michelangelo could have used it for a model. The head was neither too big nor too small for the size of the shaft. It was almost as if it was the model for the most perfect cock in the world. It was mine to enjoy. I could lick it or suck it. I could even just admire it. A few more licks and it was time to enjoy the feel of it in my mouth. It was hot and hard and had a velvet like feel. The skin was soft and smooth and almost seemed to cover a rod of steel. It was just the right size to enjoy. There was room to run my tongue over and around it when it was in my mouth. I could feel his hot mouth engulf me as I savored the feel and taste of him in my mouth. I started gently nursing on that beautiful cock. I started slowly but as he sucked on mine, he seemed to drag me along with him. It wasn't long before I found myself really sucking. I wanted more of his flavor and the only way to get it was to suck. Soon he would have to give me some of his essence to enjoy. I had a problem and that problem was that I was losing control. Things were happening to me that were beyond my control. My body was doing things I couldn't stop if I'd wanted to and I liked the feelings that he was making run through me. Control was gone and all I could do was go with the feeling sweeping over me. There was a liquid squirting into my mouth in spurts and I was almost paralyzed as my body strained forward. I felt jolts of pleasure shooting through me. I just wanted to freeze time and enjoy the pleasure. Alas, that wasn't possible. Soon it was over and all that was left was to make sure I got all of his essence. As I gently sucked the last few drops of that wonderful nectar from him, I slowly relaxed. I felt exhilarated. Although I was still panting, my body felt like it was at peace with the world. What more could I ask? I felt like I had it all. He turned ends on the bed and I kissed him, sharing what we'd given each other. When the kiss was over, his head sought my chest and soon we were asleep. To be continued... * I've always liked the following poem since I was first exposed to it about forty-eight years ago. It was written by Leigh Hunt around 1834. In my opinion, if one lives by such a precept, one cannot go wrong. It succinctly sums up how we should treat our fellow men. One needn't be religious to follow such a precept. Abou Ben Adhem Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!) Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace, And saw, within the moonlight in his room, Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom, An angel writing in a book of gold:-- Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold, And to the presence in the room he said, "What writest thou?"--The vision raised its head, And with a look made of all sweet accord, Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord." "And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so," Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low, But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then, Write me as one that loves his fellow men." The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night It came again with a great wakening light, And showed the names whom love of God had blest, And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.
