JT Part 4 Less than 24 hours after being thrown through his front door by the force of his father's rage, Josh found himself laying in bed listening to crickets and frogs, breathing in the fresh night air. "Not so different from home," he thought, "except I feel safe here." Chapter 10 He awoke the next morning very sore and very annoyed. The doctor had told Tim that he would be sore for a few days, but the swelling should go down pretty quickly. He was annoyed because Tim was cutting grass! He thought the man could at least let him sleep in -- hadn't he been through enough? He made it to the bathroom and took care of his morning needs. Tim was sitting in the living room when he walked in. "Good afternoon sleepyhead. Have a nice nap?" Afternoon? It couldn't be afternoon. But when he looked at the clock it really was.. "Yeah I guess. What's that racket about?" "It's a lawnmower. Ever heard of one? You cut grass with them. Actually I was thinking that Tom might need some help. When you get to feeling better you might be able to make a few dollars helping him out." That didn't sound too bad to Josh. It sounded pretty good in fact. Tim was still talking. "You'll be driving soon, and making friends. You'll need some spending money." His head was spinning again. Two days ago his only concern was getting through another evening with the bratty twins, now he was going to be driving? "I don't have a car." "Nope. But I do. I think I can trust you to drive it, can't I?" Josh only nodded. Where would he be going anyway? They sat in lawnmower induced silence for a while, until Josh's stomach announced itself again. Shortly after an impromptu "breakfast" the awful racket finally stopped. Seconds later there was a knock on the door. "JT let Tom in, will ya? I have to pay him." Josh opened the door and was instantly struck mute. Chapter 11 I only wished I could see the look on his face, I thought as I walked up behind him, placing my hands upon his shoulders. I knew Tom always cut the grass with his shirt off and in this heat I knew the boy would be covered in sweat. If I had been in high school I would have been drooling over Tom myself. He had been studying martial arts for years and had been cutting lawns since last summer when he had first gotten his license. The boy was built, even by adult standards. Some trick of heredity had given him blue eyes. What I remembered of genetics said it shouldn't be possible, but his eyes were indeed a very dark blue. Josh seemed to be fixated on his chest, though. I didn't really think that he was looking at the silver cross Tom wore, even though it did stand out against his chocolate colored flesh. Apparently Tom liked what he saw in Josh as well. Only his eyes were focused several degrees lower. "Come on guys, I'm paying for this air conditioning, get your asses in here!" I got them inside and the door closed. "Tom, this is my cousin Josh. He is going to be staying with me now." I was being ignored, or perhaps the boys were captivated, their attentions drawn elsewhere and I should not feel slighted. I thought about leaving them sitting, staring at one another but was afraid I might come back to find clothes flying through the air, or rampant youth engaged in some fitfully carnal activity. "Boys!!! Stop drooling!" Embarrassed faces and dropped heads followed my outburst. I groaned to myself, "they may have the bodies of men but they are really still kids. I will have to remember that." "Sorry guys, I didn't mean to embarrass you. It seems I am forgetting what it's like to be a teenager. I will try to do better." Silence. Sigh. Perhaps a different tactic. "Tom, how are the classes going? What did you and Nanna decide about the gay youth class?" Tom looked a bit dejected and said, "We decided not to do it. We thought there were still enough rednecks around here to cause problems -- some of them still call us nigger you know." "Yes, I know. JT, in case you haven't noticed, Tom is ... black." I said the last in a stage whisper. "Really? I hadn't noticed." "Yeah sure," I thought, "you stared a hole in his chest with that look you gave him." "What kind of class do you have for gay youth? Or, were you going to have for gay youth? What's a gay youth?" I looked at Josh. Tom looked at me. There were too many secrets sitting on that couch. While I didn't think that it was normally a good idea to out someone without their prior written permission, signed in triplicate and properly notarized I justified myself by thinking that, after the looks those two had been giving each other, it would all work out. So I said, "Well, a gay youth would be all those teenagers out there who are ... gay. Like the two of you, for example." With that, and two open mouths following me, I went to the kitchen to get us all something cold to drink. Chapter 12 Handing the boys their water, I told Josh, "Maybe you should tell Tom your story, why you are staying with me. I think it would be a good idea if the two of you get to know each other a bit. You will be at the same school as Tom, the same grade, and you'll probably have some of the same classes." "But ..." Arching my eyebrows at Tom, I said, "How about you, kiddo? You could tell JT your story." "You sure, Tim?" `I really am. I think Josh would be better off if he heard it actually. The two of you might find you have something in common." Neither said anything for a few seconds. Josh broke the silence. "But what KIND of class was it supposed to Be?" "I have my own martial arts studio. I teach kung fu, Shaolin style kung fu. I wanted to start a class just for gay kids like us but Tim thought I should talk to Nanna first." "Nanna is his grandmother, Josh. She is also his best friend and business partner--she bankrolled the studio." "Why did you want to have a class for gay kids?" "Because there are still those rednecks around here, and they still cause trouble. Last year one of the kids got beat up in the locker room because he wouldn't give one of the JockBoys a blowjob." I knew it wasn't quite that simple but it seemed Tom was cleaning it up a bit for Josh. "I wanted to set up a self defense class so the gay guys could kick some ass if they needed to!" "I would have signed up for that! Maybe it would have kept me from getting my face busted up." Josh didn't even sound bitter when he said it. A bit wistful for that which might have been, maybe, but not bitter. I thought I would have still been pissed off in the extreme. It had only been two days since the sperm donor punched him through the front door. I wondered what he was really feeling. Tim said, "Man, I can teach you how to take care of yourself. You can come to class with Tim and I can teach you so that no one will ever do that to you again! The class is tonight, you can start then." "Yeah, I'd like that. Can I go? I mean can we go? I mean, will you take me?" Don't laugh Tim, whatever you do don't laugh, I cautioned myself. Neither of them could take that. "Guys, calm down. Yes you can take Tom's classes. But not tonight. We need to get you some clothes and stuff. You might as well have been a newborn because all you came to me with were the clothes on your back." "But..." "I'll take him." "What? No, Tom you have things you have to do. You have to get ready for your class and get the truck and equipment put away and take a shower! Mowing grass could make you smell ya know." "I have a change of clothes it the truck, if you will let me use your shower I can take Josh shopping and we can still make it back in time for class -- I can leave the trailer here can't I?" He was pleading. I wasn't sure why but he needed to do this. I could tell Josh wanted it too but in his eyes I also saw a case of nerves. "You sure guys?" "Yes!" in stereo. "Ok. But--" "Cool let me get my clothes!" He was halfway to the door. "Tom! Sit!" He sat back down, barely; he was bouncing on the edge of the seat. "There is a condition." I was glad to see that both boys deflated somewhat at that proclamation. At least they were listening. "Or two. First. Call Nanna and let her know what's going on. Second. You two have to talk." "About what?" "I can call her from my cell." "Josh, about anything important. Skip the trivia for today. You can talk about the music and the truck and the boys later, for this trip you have to talk about something important. And Tom, Do Not forget to call Nanna. You don't want her mad at you do you?" He shook his head. "Good! I know I don't want her mad at me!" The boys, having gotten their way, scurried off to do whatever it is boys do to make themselves presentable. Tom was in the bathroom and Josh in his new bedroom. Josh was anxiously waiting in the living room before Tom was finished with his shower. I caught Tom as he left the bathroom. "Here is your check for the week and here is my card. Take it and make sure he gets everything, ok? Ev-er-ry-thing. From a toothbrush to underwear to a razor to his favorite jo lube! That should give you something to talk about!" "Tim!" "And make him get some sort of utilitarian undies, man -- not just those skimpy bikinis you want to see him in!" "Dammit! You and Nanna ore the only ones who can make me blush!" As they were getting in the truck, I saw Josh hand Tom the cell and heard Tom ask, "What does the T stand for, dude?" "Thomas" "I knew I liked you." End of part four. Interested in hearing about the boy's shopping spree / first date? Let me know. Comments or suggestions to vealskye@yahoo.com
