Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2016 06:52:24 +0100 From: Rick Masters Subject: Juvenile Detention 17 JUVENILE DETENTION Chapter 17 – The Revelation The email that had got Steven's attention simply stated that the author, Officer Daniel, had been given the responsibility of assigning work duties in the vegetable gardens on the day of the incident, and part of it read: "I was tasked with allotting duties to all the inmates working in the vegetable gardens on the day in question. Before I started it, one of the inmates from Charlie Block, Mr. Clive Phelps, approached me and asked me to put the new guy from Bravo Block with him as he wanted to see what he was like. I understand that it was Phelps (who is the cell block leader) who sent Mr. Tolmers to fetch a bucket of manure." "Wow! That certainly is significant. I am glad we have this bit of information before we interview Phelps. It clearly lends support to the idea that there might have been some planning to this attack," Gladys said. "Yes, it certainly does, but I don't think we should play that card too early in our investigation. Let us rather give them an opportunity to hang each other by telling us lies first, and then we will begin to bring in the evidence we have and see how they change their stories. Maybe we will only bring that evidence in after their initial disciplinary hearings. Although I might share it with Makepeace, provided he is willing to keep mum on it too." Steven returned to looking through the emails he had received from the other officers and was pleased to note that nearly all of them had replied already. Although Succum would know that Steven would see through his statement to the real reason, he claimed that he had tasked Andy and Chris with looking after Josh because he could see that without any of the criminal element savvy Josh was very vulnerable, and he had feared that someone might try to take some sort of advantage of that. Steven replied to the email, copying Gladys on the reply, asking Succum to email Makepeace and tell him that, as it would strengthen the case for the four inmates from Bravo. Of course giving virtually the same reason as Steven had also given would help to strengthen Steven's case if anything more was to come out of it. The emails from the officers who were on duty in the vegetable garden helped to build the picture of events following the attack while emails from the officers who had some connection with Josh helped to confirm what Steven and officers Stuart and Succum had said. The email from Officer Sheila piqued Steven's curiosity, because it suggested that they might also want to interview the two inmate leaders of Alpha Cell Block, but she did not say anything more about it as she did not want to lead the questioning in any specific direction. When Gladys read it she was also a bit surprised and curious about why her line manager should suggest that. Gladys was aware of the two girls but also did not know what it was they could help with as the girls were not working in the gardens on that day. "We will have to interview them now simply because there has been a suggestion made. So let's interview our five Charlie inmates that are enjoying the luxury of Solitary this morning and we will interview Miss Shepherd and Miss Cameron straight after lunch," Steven suggested, making a slight change to their original plan. A half hour later the two investigators entered the Solitary Block once more. After a bit of discussion with the officer on duty in the block they entered the interrogation room and got themselves organised and comfortable. Steven then asked the officer to bring in the first one. Purposely leaving the two cell block leaders to the last, they had Gerald Cobb brought in. Like the rest he was totally naked and shaved, he had ankle shackles on linked by a chain which was fixed to a hook on the floor and his hands were cuffed behind him. Steven had carefully positioned Gladys and now stood in front of her so that although Gerald could see there was a second person in the room, he could not see who it was or that she was female. Steven wanted to use this as a surprise tactic to try and un-nerve the interviewees a bit. "Your name is Gerald Cobb, is it not?" Steven asked, looking at the notes that he had made from looking at Cobb's personal file. "Yes, officer," Gerald responded. "And you are currently assigned to Cell Block Charlie?" "Yes, officer." "You have been with us for four months of a two-year sentence and this is your fifth time in solitary?" "If you say so, officer." "Be careful how you speak to an officer of the Academy, boy! I will not allow any disrespect. Do you understand?" "Yes, officer, sorry." "I am Officer Steven and my assistant behind me is Officer Gladys." Steven said stepping aside so that Gerald could see Gladys for the first time. The horny fifteen year old did not stand a chance, and in seconds his cock had risen to full hardness and his face, neck and top half of his chest had turned crimson. Pretending to ignore this, Steven continued. "No doubt you have already worked out that we are here to investigate the incident you were a party to which occurred two days ago in the vegetable gardens. Now to start with I want you to tell us in your own words what happened. But before you begin, I must caution you that anything you say might be used in a court of law if this case goes to prosecution. Now talk." "He wasn't supposed to get injured, just frightened. There had been a lot of talk with him getting his overalls so quick and some wanted to show him that even if he was sucking up to officers he still was not protected. So we knew he would be coming to get manure and waited there for him. The fork going in him was an accident. It was not meant to be like that. We were just going to make him sore so that he knew he was not safe, but then the others attacked us and next thing we were in solitary." "By `him' we understand that you are meaning Mr. Joshua Tolmers; is that correct?" "Yes, Officer Steven." "And who are the `we' you referred to?" "Just some of us from Charlie." "Give me their names." "I can't. I aint no grass, Officer Steven." "You do realise that refusing to give us the names of those you have referred to is the same as withholding evidence and is a punishable offence? Do you want to rethink on those names, Mr. Cobb?" "Please, Officer Stephen! If I snitch on them they will find out, and then I will be in a worse shape than Tolmers." "The only way they are going to find out that you mentioned a name is if they read the transcript of this interview or if you tell them. Now will you confirm to me the names of all who were involved in this incident?" "I can't, Officer Steven; I am dead meat if I do." Gerald Cobb looked like he was close to tears, or worse, in danger of pissing himself from fear. "Officer Gladys, please record that this witness is tending to be difficult and is withholding evidence. Mr. Cobb, your failure to cooperate will be noted and that will count against you in your disciplinary hearing on this matter and could also count against you in court should this matter go beyond this Academy. Do you understand that?" "Yes, Officer Steven, I do. But at least I will still be alive." "Or you hope you will still be alive, because the others might still think you talked about them anyway. We will get to the bottom of this one way or another." "Mr. Cobb, if I were you I would tell Officer Steven the names, because the chances are they already think you have snitched on them and will definitely think so once they hear what evidence we have on them. There were a lot of people out in the vegetable allotments who saw a great deal of what happened. Now is your chance to cooperate and give us the information we are asking from you, and maybe you will get a lighter sentence because of it." Gladys tried to reason with Gerald as well. "I will not grass on the other guys," Gerald stated firmly. "Very well then. From the reports I understand that you are the one who wielded the fork that went through Mr. Tolmers' arm. Is that correct?" "I told you already it was an accident. It was not meant to happen like that." "Please answer my question. Did you or did you not put that fork through Mr. Tolmers' arm? Yes or no!" Steven said a lot more firmly. "Yes, but it was an accident. The prongs were meant to go on either side of his arm to pin it to the ground so that he couldn't escape when his balls were crushed." "So the plan was to commit grievous bodily harm by standing on his testicles and destroying them? Is that correct?" "Yes ... I mean no! We were just going to hurt him a bit to show him that he could suck up to the officers as much as he wanted but it still would not guarantee him protection." "But you have just told us the plan was to hold him still while one of you crushed his balls. In my understanding of English that means more than just hurting someone. Officer Gladys, would you agree?" "Definitely. In self-defense training we are taught to knee or punch a male assailant in the testicles, but they never use the word crush; crush is to destroy beyond use." "Well, Mr. Cobb? What exactly was the plan? Because this is looking more and more like it was aimed at causing grievous bodily harm, for which I believe you lot will find you receive sentences that keep you locked up until well after you are able to go out and enjoy life. And for those who are not willing to be helpful it will almost certainly be longer still." Steven paused to give Gerald a chance to respond. "Does your silence mean that you have nothing more to say, or that you are too weak to stand up and be a man. Perhaps we should get some nappies in for you in case you can't control yourself anymore when you sleep." "I have nothing more to say," Gerald said with a quivering voice. Clearly he was both afraid and embarrassed at showing his fear. "Very well. This interview is terminated now, but be advised that we might still come back and have other questions to ask as we get further into the investigation." Steven moved to the door of the interview room and called for the officer on watch to take Cobb away and bring in the next one.
