Silent_Ninja@comcast.net From the previous chapter: After we ate Shawn said, "Matt, I'm hurting can I have one of my pain pills?" I got him one and he took it with some water, then I told him to go get his shower and get ready for bed because we had a long day ahead of us tomorrow. "The towels are in your bathroom closet, and I'll be up in a few minutes to tuck you into bed." I said to him. Tank followed Shawn up the stairs and I locked up the house. I heard the shower cut off and I gave him a couple of minutes to get into bed and then I went in to tuck him into bed. I sat down on the side of his bed and said, "I am so glad you decided to come to live with tank and I, our lives were empty and you made them full again." I finished by saying, "I love you Shawn, if you need anything throughout the night, you come get me." Then I bent over and kissed him on the cheek and gave him a hug. I went into my room, took my shower, and got into bed. Sometime during the night Shawn came and got into bed with me, because when I woke up to go pee, he was snuggled up to me. I went and took care of business and went back to bed, I laid back down, put my arms around Shawn, and said a small prayer. "Please God, work it out so he can stay with me, I'll take care of him, and I would love to be his dad." Then I drifted back off to sleep holding my little boy. Chapter 3 I woke up before my alarm clock started buzzing, and I immediately smelled the wonderful aroma of fresh brewed coffee and breakfast being prepared down in the kitchen. I slipped on my robe, took care of urgent business in the bathroom, and Tank and I went downstairs to speak with Mrs. Gonzalez about having an extra guess for breakfast. I walked into the kitchen, fixed myself a cup of coffee, and then I filled Mrs. Gonzalez in on what happened over the weekend. Mrs. Gonzalez said, Oh my, thank God you saw what was going on and was able to help him." Then she proceeded to tell me that breakfast would be ready in about 25 minutes. As I started upstairs to wake Shawn Up, I let tank out for his morning business, then I went up into the master bedroom and woke Shawn saying, "Good morning Sunshine, time to get up." Shawn smiled at me and said with a yawn, "Good morning Matt, something sure smells good." I answered him saying, "Mrs. Gonzalez is preparing breakfast, so go get dress, because we have allot to do today." I hurried and got ready myself, and I met Shawn in the hallway and we went downstairs together. I introduced Shawn to Mrs. Gonzalez, and she gave him a big hug and said, "Welcome to the family Shawn." She continued by saying, "My name is Mrs. Gonzalez, and I do most of the cooking around here during the week, so I need to know what you like and don't like, if you can make me up a list." Shawn said, "Yes mam, I'll make you up a list tonight." We sat down and had a breakfast fit for a king, it included: pancakes, sausage, bacon, and fruit. Shawn did ask for seconds and thirds, making Mrs. Gonzalez very happy. After breakfast Shawn got up and cleared the table, without being asked, winning more brownie points with Mrs. Gonzalez. She thanked him and I sent him to brush his teeth, and to grab his hat and sunglasses. While he was gone Mrs. Gonzalez said, "Matt, he is a special young man, but you can see so much pain and suffering in his eyes." "I know. I'm going to do my best to help change that for him, I want to try to restore his trust in people." I said to her. I continued and said, "This kid has really got to me, I want to try to adopt him." She smiled at me and said, "Oh Matt, that would be great for both of you, because he already loves you with all his heart, you can see it in his face every time he looks at you." "Oh I almost forgot, Friday is his birthday and I want everything special for him that day, can you handle the food, cake, and decorating the house for me?" I asked before Shawn came back into the room. Mrs. Gonzalez said as Shawn walked back into the room, "I'll take care of everything boss, don't worry about anything, you can count on me." "Mrs. Gonzalez looked at us and asked, "Now, Where are you guys off to today?" I answered her by saying, "I'm taking Shawn to get several things for his room, more clothes, a computer, and computer desk." Mrs. Gonzalez said, "Oh my, Sounds like you guys have a full day of fun planned, and more than likely will be eating lunch out somewhere else, so I'll get busy making a special dinner for you hansom guys." ThenI looked at Shawn and asked, "Hey Kidoe, are you ready to go?" He nodded his head and said, Yep I'm all ready." We headed for the garage, and a shopping experience Shawn would never forget. Once in the garage Shawn saw my Mustang, my Ford Expedition, and my Cadillac El Dorado and said, Oh WOW! Witch one are we taking?" I said, "We are taking the Expedition, because it has more room in it." I unlocked the doors of the SUV, helped Shawn up in it and got him all buckled up. I backed the Expedition out of the garage and then we were off to do some major shopping. About 25 minutes later we were pulling into the mall's large parking lot. We lucked up and found a parking place in front of the main entrance. We locked up the SUV and started into the mall. We took the mall by storm that day, starting with Sears, The Gap, and The Sports Authority for everything from pance, shorts, underwear, socks, and shirts of all colors and designs. He picked out everything from dress clothes down to the speeddos he picked for swimming. Then it was off to the Foot Locker where he got a couple of pairs of dress shoes, a pair of sandles, and another pair of Nikes. After getting shoes, we headed for the electronics store, where we quickly picked him out a 27 inch TV, a DVD VCR combo, a X-Box and a PS 2, games for each system, several movies, a stereo, and lots of CD's. I paid for everything, and even made arrangements through the manager to have everything delivered to the house. He told us just let him know what stores we would be shopping in, he would take care of the rest. I made him a list and we were off again. Next we went into the Verizon Wireless store and I told Shawn to pick him out a phone. He found a phone he liked and I had it added to my account, and we were off to Computer World, where I immediately asked for Dave the stor manager. When Dave came out and saw me he shook my hand and said, "Well hello Matt, What can I do for you today?" I answered him saying, "Hello Dave, I am looking for a computer system for Shawn, and I want all the bells and whistles thrown in with it including: A 3 in 1 printer, fax, and copier, your best digital camera, and all the programs he may need for school." Dave led us over to one and said, "This is our fastest and most popular model, it will do anything anyone wants it to do but cook biskets." I looked at Shawn and he was smiling from ear to ear, and he finally said, "Oh Matt, this is too much, I don't deserve all of this." I pulled him into a hug and said, "Yes Shawn you do, you deserve this and lots more." I kissed him on his forehead and said, "You are a special young man and you deserve the best." Then I sent Shawn off to find him some games for his new computer He was back shortly and then we looked at computer desks until he found one he really liked, then we paid Dave for everything and were off to the western store. I got Shawn totally outfitted, everything from three cowboy hats, jeans, western shirts, belts and belt buckles, and cowboy boots. Our last stop was the Kimono Dragons Martial Art Center. I told Shawn to look around while I talked to the manager. Tom walked out of his office about then and said, "Hello Sir, what can we do for you today?" I answered him and said, "Hi Tom, I have a young man with me and I want him to be totally outfitted with, sparring gear, Kimono Dragon gym bag, six Gi's, two black, two white, two for tournaments, a complete set of patches for each Gi's, T-shirts, a complete set of belts, and anything else he fines he likes." I continued by saying, "He is going to be one of my students and I want him to have the best." Tom helped Shawn pick out everything he needed. I paid for everything and we were ready to get some lunch. We got back into the Expedition and I asked him, "Okay kidoe, where would you like to go for lunch?" He looked up at me and said, "Can we go to The Pizza Palace?" I answered him saying, "Sure we can." We pulled into The Pizza Palace's parking lot, parked the Expedition, and went inside. I paid for two buffets, and I was totally amazed at how much pizza Shawn put away. We left Pizza Hut and I had one more surprise for Shawn before going home. I pulled up in front of The Kimono Dragon Fittness Center about 10 minutes later. Shawn's mouth fell open and his eyes got as big as basketballs, before he said, " OH WOW!, This place has the same name as that karate stor in the mall, where you got me all the karate stuff." I answered him saying, "Yes it does, they both are owned by the same person." He excitingly asked, "Do you teach karate here?" I said, "I sure do, and I have several other instructors that teach for me." I let what I said sink in for a minute and he looked at me and asked, "You mean? You own this building and the karate stor?" I smiled at him and said, "Yes I do, now lets go get you signed up for lessons and get you a locker." We went inside And up to the counter, where Shawn saw a large painting of a Kimono Dragon and under it was the Ledgon of the Kimono Dragon. In Asia, the mighty dragon is a mythical beast long celebrated for its benevolence, intelligence, and good will. The dragon has been a common symbol of identity for East Asian cultures. In fact, Chinese people all over the world are affectionately known as lung de chuan ren, or the "descendants of the dragon." Known in Chinese as lung, the Asian dragon was believed to have originated in China. After I filled out all the paperwork for Shawn to be a student, I gave him the grand tour of the facility and then we headed for home. Once we were in the Expedition Shawn was a ball of energy, and he was talking a mile a minute. I chuckled at his excitement, and pointed toward the truck in front of us. Shawn looked at it and then realized that it was the truck from the mall delivering his stuff. I told Shawn to call the house and ask Mrs. Gonzalez To open the gate, He made the call and as we were pulling up to the gate, it swung open wide and allowed us through. I parked the Expedition in the garage, and went to show the guys where the stuff goes, and by the time I got around to the truck Tank had already made his presents known by not letting the delivery men out of their truck. I gave Tank the relax hand signal, and he came over and sat beside Shawn. The driver of the truck looked at me and asked, "Hey man is it safe to get out of the truck?"I answered him and said, "It is now, he won't bother you unless I give him the signal." The driver got down from his truck and said, "That is one massive dog, and I sure wouldn't want to tangle with him." I said to him, "Yes he is and he is a force to be reckon with when he is mad." He said, "Well lets get this stuff unloaded and go home for the day." I offered to help and we got everything unloaded in just a few minutes. After I made sure everything was there I sign their paperwork and they left. Mrs. Gonzalez came up and volunteered to help Shawn hang up all of his new clothes. I thanked her and went to get me a soda. I came back into Shawn's room and said, "Okay kidoe, get washed up for dinner and then we will put everything else together." We went down for dinner and as usual it was fantastic. While we ate Shawn excitedly filled Mrs. Gonzalez in on our day, and everything he got. After we ate Shawn cleared the table, gave Mrs. Gonzalez a big hug, and thanked her for helping him hang his clothes up and for the wonderful dinner she prepared. I saw a tear in her eye as she bent down and kissed him on his forehead, and told him she would see him in the morning. I told him to run upstairs and wait until I got up there before opening any of the boxes. I looked at Mrs. Gonzalez and said, "I have had more fun today than I have in a long time." I continued and said, "What good is money if you can't spend it and make someone happy." She smiled at me and said, "You both look real happy, and that makes me happy Matt." I gave her a big hug and she left for the day. I quietly walked upstairs, stood in his doorway, and just watched him for a few moments, when I saw and heard something that really broke my heart. Shawn hugged Tank and started crying, and through his tears and sobs I heard him say, "Oh Tank, I'm so happy, I wish I could stay here forever. I would love to have Matt as my daddy." With tears streaming down my cheeks, I walked over to him, picked him up and said to him, "Oh Shawn, I love you so much, I was so happy today watching you smile, I want you to stay here with me as long as you want, and I'm honored you want to call me daddy." I continued and said, "I'm going to try my best to adopt you, if that is what you really want?" He cried harder and said, "Yes, yes, yes that is what I want." I hugged him harder dryed his eyes with my hanky and said, "Now, lets get your computer desk put together, and everything hooked up. He jumped up and said, "Okay Daddy, what can I do to help?" I sent him into my bedroom to bring me my small tool box out of my closet. He was back in a flash, with toolbox in hand. We had the computer desk put together in no time, and then we started setting up his computer. Once the computer was set up, I booted it up and made sure he could get online through my wierless router. Once that was done I got his TV, X-Box, and His PS 2 all set up. I told him to play his games for a little while, and I went to make a few phone calls. My first phone call was to my lawyer Josh Williams, he answered his phone and I said, "Hey Josh Matt Jones here, how are you? " He answered me saying, "I'm good Matt, what can I do for you today?" I took a deep breath and said, "I recently became foster dad to an 11 year old boy named Shawn, and I want to make it permanent by adopting him." He chuckled and said, "I was wondering when one would get to you enough to make you want to adopt them." I answered him and said, "This one really has got to me, he has already asked me if he could call me daddy." He answered me saying, "Who is in charge of Shawn's case?" I said, "Tim Blackman, the director of CPS is in charge of his case." Then I gave him the information on the case so far as I know it. He assured me he would get started on this immediately. Then we hung up and I called Tim Blackman and explained to him what I was trying to do. He said, "Matt that is great news, I'll do everything in my power to make it happen for you and Shawn." My next call was to the Mastiff kennal I bought Tank from, to see if they had any puppies. When Amy answered the phone I asked them the million dollar question, "Hey Amy, Matt here, Do you have any puppies ready for a great home?" She laughed and said, "Hi Matt is Tank lonely?" I chuckled and said, "No I have a foster son now, and his 12th birthday is Friday and I want to get him a puppy. Amy answered and said, "Oh Matt, you are a big softy, we have lots of puppies ready for a great home." I asked her to pick one out for Shawn, and deliver it Friday at 5:00 P. M. if possible. She promised she would be here with a large puppy on Friday, and we said our good-bys and hung up. Then I placed a call to the horse farm I buy my horses from and when they answered I asked, "Hi Daniel, Matt Jones here, I was wondering if you had any flashy colored horses, for sale right now?" He asked me saying, "Who is this horse for?" I explained about Shawn, and he replied saying, "I have one that would be perfect for him, she is a three year old Pinto quarter horse mare, about 15.2 hands high, very gentle but has lots of spunk if you need it." We discussed price and arranged to have her delivered to the barn Thursday night. My last call was to the Honda motor cycle shop where I bought my Honda Gold Wing and my four wheeler. When Phillip answered his phone I said, "Hi Phil, Matt Jones here, I need a favor if possible." Phillip answered me saying, "What can I do for you today Matt?" I filled him in on what I wanted and he said, "I have three of the 250's, what color would you want?" I quickly told him Shawn's favorite colors were orange and blue, and we agreed on an orange four wheeler with blue trim work. He told me he could have it done by Thursday, and I told him I would be by there sometime early Friday morning to pick it up. Oh yeah, one more phone call, I called a retired Child Psychologist friend of mine and asked him if he could take my patients for about two weeks. He said he could, and we agreed he would start tomorrow. I went upstairs and told Shawn it was time to take his shower and get into bed. He got his shower, and he climbed into bed. I tucked him in and kissed him on his cheek, telling him I loved him and would see him in the morning. I just got to sleep when I felt Tank nudging me with his big head. I was instantly awake wondering what was wrong. Tank kept pacing back and forth from my room to Shawn's room. I got up and went into Shawn's room and he was in the middle of a nightmare, he was jurking about, and he was crying out no, no, no over and over. I sat down on the side of his bed, and gently woke him up saying, "Its ok Shawn, I won't let anyone hurt you anymore, your safe now." When he woke up enough to realized it was me, he began to cry harder, and I just sat there holding and comforting him. He asked through his tears, "Can I please sleep with you?" I didn't say a word, I just picked him up, and carried him to my bed. I laid him down, snuggled up beside him, put my arms around him, and we fell asleep. I woke up smelling the aroma of fresh brewed coffee, and gravey and biskets, cooking in the kitchen. I gently got up, put on my robe and went down for a cup of coffee. I filled Mrs. Gonzalez in on what happened last night, and told her I was going to start Shawn into counseling today. She agreed that would be good for him, and then she sent me off to get Shawn up for breakfast. I went into my bedroom, walked over to my bed, bent down and kissed him on the tip of his cute little nose and said, "Rise and shine, little buddy., it is almost time for breakfast." He opened his eyes and said through a big yawn, "Good Morning Daddy, I smell gravey and biskets." I smiled and said, "Yes you do, Mrs. Gonzalez has everything ready for us, now go get ready for breakfast." He ran off to his room and was ready in a couple of minutes, and we went down for breakfast together. Once again he ate more than I would have ever Imagine. When he was done he cleared the dishes, hugged Mrs. Gonzalez, and thanked her for the wonderful breakfast. Then he asked Mrs. Gonzalez to come upstairs to see his computer and desk, TV, and everything else she didn't get to see yesterday. She went upstairs with him, and made a big fuss over everything. A little while later I went up and said to Shawn, "Hey buddy, we got to go you have an appointment with Dr. Whitehead in an hour." He looked at me and said, "Who is Dr. Whitehead?" I answered him and said, "She is a Child Psychologist friend of mine, and she is going to help you deal with your bad dreams, and what happened to you." We said good by to Mrs. Gonzalez and Tank, Jumped into the Mustang and were off to town. Shawn and I walked into Dr. Whitehead's office, signed in, and sat down to wait. In just a few minutes Dr. Susan Whitehead came out, saw me, and walked over to us and said to Shawn, "Hello Shawn, I'm Dr. Whitehead or Dr. Susan witch ever one you prefer, you and Matt come on back and we'll get started." It didn't take Dr. Susan long to get Shawn talking, and his first session went great. She wanted to see Shawn once a week for right now, so we made our next appointment and went home. When we got home I looked at Shawn and asked, "Hey kidoe would you like to go swimming with me before lunch?" He smiled that award winning smile I love so much and said, Yes! I would love to go swimming with you!" I sent him off to get his speedos on, and I went to get my swimming trunks on also. When Shawn walked out of his room in nothing but his speedos, I stood there totally mesmerized by his beauty, and all I could do was stand there with my mouth open just staring at him. With a confused expression on his face Shawn asked, "Matt is there something wrong?" I smiled at him and said, "Oh no Shawn, There is nothing wrong, you are so beautiful, I can't keep myself from staring at you." He came over and gave me a big hug and said, "I love you so much Matt, I hope I get to stay here forever." I answered him and said, "I hope you do too kidoe, now lets go swimming." I picked him up, laid him across my shoulders, and headed for the swimmingpool. Shawn was giggling and squirming when we went through the kitchen, and Mrs. Gonzalez chuckled and said, "You boys have fun and be careful." I walked over to the edge of the pool with Shawn still giggling and squirming in my arms and just stepped off into the deep end of the pool. Shawn came up and splashed me, and that started an all out splashing war. We played for about an hour and Mrs. Gonzalez called us in for lunch. I sent him off to his room to get some dry clothes and I headed off for mine. After lunch Shawn cleared the table, hugged and thanked Mrs. Gonzalez, and I told him to get his karate gear ready to go in a few minutes. He gave me that smile, that I love so much, and ran off to his room to get his stuff together. He was back in a minute and asked, "What color Gi should I wear for tonight?" I told him to wear the white one tonight and he was off in a flash. He was back in about ten minutes later and we left for the fitness center. Once there I began to call all my instructors to see if they could come about an hour early to discuss an idea I want to try to get started. Once they were all there I began to speak saying, "You all know about the growing problem of homeless youth in our city, well, I want to do something about it." "I per pose we launch Operation Karate Force, this will allow us to put into action the three parts of our dragon's legend: benevolence, intelligence, and good will." I continued by saying, " This project will give homeless kids hope, self assurance, a safe place to sleep, and it will give them a reason to give back to the community." I also said, "I'm starting this project off by donating two 21-floor hotel buildings that will house 1000 homeless kids each after they are remodeled." I continued and said, "I'm also donating a very large wearhouse that will be able to feed about 300 homeless people three meals aday, once it is totally remodeled." I finished up by saying; "I'll be giving free karate lessons to anyone that participates or is in the project." I added saying, "We are the movers and shakers of Philadelphia and I would like for you guys to be my board members of Project Karate Force, because I need each and everyone of you to help me make this work." I had several come by before class and volunteer to help with different things needing to be done for the project , even the remodeling jobs. During class I worked with Shawn on basic moves, but not to much because he was still healing from his surgery. He picked up on everything reall quick, and before we realized, it was time to go home. On the way home I stopped and got us a hamburger and fries from Burger King and we ate on the way. Once we got home I sent Shawn up to get his shower and get into bed. I told him I would be up to tuck him in, and to say good night in a few minutes. I checked my messages on my answering machine and there was a call from Josh Williams my lawyer asking me to call as soon as I got home. I called him right away and said when he answered, "Hey Josh, What's up?" He chuckled and said, "You owe Tim and I big time for this one Matt, you and Shawn have a custody hearing date Friday morning at 9:00 A. M. in Judge Roy Chambers's office." He also said to me, "I have papers signed by his mom and dad terminating their perrental rights, and it is just up to a judge to make it legal now." I said, "I'll see you Friday morning then, thanks Josh, thanks so much." We hung up and I went up to tuck Shawn into bed. I kissed him on the cheek and told him good night, and I left his door open so I could hear him just in case he had another nightmare. I also went to bed, with all kinds of thoughts running through my head. I woke up with my usual little visitor wrapped around me, and smells of coffee and breakfast being cooked downstairs, so I got up, took care of business in the bathroom, and went down to get a cup of coffee. I quickly told Mrs. Gonzalez about our court date, and she was as excited as I am. I asked her if she could come with us on Friday and after court watch Shawn a little while at the mall so I could pick up one of his presents. She quickly said, "I was planning to be at court with you both, and I'll be glad to watch Shawn at the mall for a while." With that she sent me to get Shawn up for breakfast. On the way upstairs I let Tank out for his morning duties, and I went into my bedroom and woke Shawn up, and told him to go get ready for breakfast. He gave me a big hug and said, "Good Morning Daddy, I love you." We both went downstairs together for breakfast, and Shawn gave Mrs. Gonzalez a big hug before sitting down for breakfast. During breakfast Shawn filled Mrs. Gonzalez in on his first karate lesson, and I also added that he really was going to pick it up really fast. We finished up, Shawn cleared the table, and he went off to his room. I went into my office to get some work done on Project Karate Force, and before I knew it, Mrs. Gonzalez was calling us for lunch. After lunch I asked Shawn if he would like to go horse back riding with me. He quickly agreed and we went to the barn and saddled up my horse and one of the mares and I showed him around my entire property. He took to riding like a fish to water. We rode for about an hour, and then we headed back to the barn. Well the rest of the day went by quickly, and I decided to tell Shawn about our court day after dinner. He was full of questions, and was so excited I almost didn't get him to go to bed that night. The next day was very busy with phone calls, getting a construction crew started on the wearhouse, and karate class that evening. That night he was so excited he didn't even start out in his own bed, he right away asked me if he could sleep with me. I agreed, and he finally settled down enough to fall asleep. When I got up to go to the bathroom, and downstairs to get my first cup of coffee, Shawn woke up and said, "Good morning Daddy, I love you." I answered him saying, "Good morning birthday boy, do you feel any older?" He looked at me funny and said, "I forgot all about my birthday, I've been so happy." We both took care of business and went downstairs together. Mrs. Gonzalez was surprised to see Shawn with me and she said to him, "Good Morning Sweetie, happy birthday, breakfast will be ready in about 10 minutes." I got me a cup of coffee and Shawn got himself a glass of OJ. Shawn asked Mrs. Gonzalez was she going to go to court with us. She told him she was and that afterwards she wanted him to go to the mall for a little while with her. We ate and when Shawn got up to clear the dishes I said, "Not today boy, it is your birthday, and you ain't going to work on your birthday." I sent him to his room to get his suit on for court, and he was back in a little while needing some help tieing his neck tie. I got ready and we went and got into the Expedition and we were off to court. When we arrived at the courthouse Josh met us as soon as we entered the building and began to tell Shawn what was going to happen. Right at 9:00 court was called to order, and we stood as Judge Chambers came into the courtroom. Judge Chambers said, "You may be seated." He started talking right away saying, "Who is here for the plaintiff?" My lawyer stood up and said, "Josh Williams your honor." He asked, "Who is here for Child Protective Services?" Tim Blackman stood up and said, Tim Blackman for CPS your honor." Judge Chambers continued by saying, "I have read everything and wish to talk with young Shawn in my chambers before making my judgment, so court is in recess until we return." Shawn got up and followed Judge Chambers into his chambers and was gone for about thirdy minutes before coming back into the courtroom. Judge Chambers asked Tim Blackman, "Does CPS object to this adoption?" Tim stood and said, "No your honor, we are totally in favor of this adoption." Judge Chambers started speaking again and he said, "I just spent some time talking with a very polite young man, that deserves to be loved and a chance at life, and I am ready to make my decision." He took a deep breath and said, "While talking to Shawn I found out that today is his birthday, and I asked him if he could have anything he wanted what would he want? He said that was easy he wanted Matt to be his new daddy. At this he called Shawn up to him and whispered something in his ear, and when Shawn turned around I knew by the smile on his face even before he ran over and jumped into my arms. Judge Chambers said, The adoption of Shawn Thomas Clark is granted. Shawn Thomas Clark will from this day on be known as Shawn Thomas Jones. I don't think there was a dry eye in the courtroom including Judge Chambers. We left the courthouse, and I dropped Mrs. Gonzalez and Shawn off at the mall, and I headed for the Honda shop. I got his fourwheeler, helmet, and gloves and I took them home before going back after Shawn and Mrs. Gonzalez. When they got back into the Expedition he began to tell me all about the games Mrs. Gonzalez got him for his birthday. When we got home I told him to go try his new games out for a little while, and he took off to his room. I made several phone calls and before I knew it, Mrs. Gonzalez was calling us for lunch. After lunch I asked Shawn to ride down to the barn with me to help feed the horses. We loaded up in the golf cart and headed for the barn. Once at the barn I told him to check the stalls and make sure they all had fresh water, and when he got to the new horse he said, "Hey Matt, there is a new horse in here." I answered him and said, "Really? A new horse?" I walked down to where he was at and I put my arms around him and said, "Happy birthday Shawn, this is your very own horse, your new saddle and other stuff is in the tack room." He began to cry and said, Oh Daddy, she is so pretty, I love her, and I love you too." Then he excitingly asked, "Can we ride?" I saddled my horse and then I helped Shawn get his horse saddled up, and he asked, "Can we ride up to the house to show Mrs. Gonzalez my new horse?" I said, "Sure we can." Once we got to the house I told Tank to speak, and he began to bark and Mrs. Gonzalez came out to see what Tank was barking at. When she came out Shawn said, Mrs. Gonzalez how do you like my new horse?" She told him how pretty she was, and how good he looked riding her. I looked at my watch and then I said to Mrs. Gonzalez, "We are going to ride for about an hour or two to give you time to get dinner done without us underfoot. She told us to have fun and we were off on a father son ride around the property. After riding for an hour and a half we unsaddled the horses and headed for the house. When Shawn and I came through the door everyone shouted happy birthday Shawn, and he just stood there with his mouth hanging open. Dr. Shane was there with his son, Nurse Mary and Nurse Julie brought their kids, and several from karate class were there. About that time the door bell rang and I told Shawn to get the door, and when he opened the door he saw a lady there with an excited puppy on a leash. Amy said to Shawn, "You must be Shawn, happy birthday." Then she handed him the leash. The other kids came over to see the puppy, and while the other kids played with the puppy Shawn came over and gave me a big hug and said, I love you daddy, thank you so much." I hugged him back and said, Your welcome Son, I love you too." Then everyone started singing happy birthday when Mrs. Gonzalez brought in the birthday cake with 12 burning candles on it, I didn't have to make a wish because I already had everything I wanted. After we ate a wonderful dinner, cake and ice cream Shawn opened all his other presents, and he told everyone what I got him so far. I spoke up before everyone started to go home and said, "I have one more present for you Shawn, if everyone would please follow me out to the garage I'll give it to you. Once in the garage I opened a storage room and showed him his fourwheeler, his helmet and gloves. After he ran over to it, he turned back to me and jumped into my arms and started crying. He said through his tears, "Oh Daddy, I love you so much, this is the best day of my life." To Be Continued Reader Acknowledgments: Thanks guys for your emails and encouraging words.
