I couldn't believe it. It was two rooms really. In one there was a huge bed with wooden posts, a desk and sitting chairs. The other room was like my own private living room; complete with a sofa and loveseat; coffee table; television; and a fireplace! A freaking fireplace! I even had my own bathroom. The walls had a dark wood going half way up. But best of all was the view from the windows; they were six feet high and there was a French door that led out to my own balcony overlooking the garden and woods beyond. "You hungry?" Antonio asked breaking me from my stunned silence. "We ate before we got here," I replied. "OK," he said, "But if you need anything just push this switch." He pointed to a button on the end table. "There another one on the night stand next to your bed. William will get you anything you want." He flashed a prefect smile at me before continuing, "Come on I'll take you down and show you the library. We have tons of movies. Of course you can watch cable too, if you want." I followed him back down the stairs and through the archway toward the west of the house. He showed me where to find the videos and we spent some time talking about what kind of movies he liked; and what kind I liked. We both liked sci-fi and action flicks, which was cool. Then we exited through the back of the library, down a hall with more rooms, until we came to the kitchen. There was another lady there, maybe in her sixties, humming to herself while putting away dishes. She turned and smiled at us as we entered. "Fran," Antonio said introducing me, "This Kevin, Uncle Tony's son. He's going to be staying with us for a while." The woman bowed slightly and said, "A pleasure to meet you." I mumbled something about it being nice to meet her too, which made Antonio laugh for some reason. I was feeling overwhelmed and nervous about saying, or doing, the wrong thing. Antonio said that he was in the mood for something sweet and Fran dished out two servings of chocolate cheesecake before excusing herself. I sat staring at the dessert while Antonio woofed half of it down in one bite. "What's the matter?" he asked, "It ain't gonna bite you." I took a bite and before long both desserts had vanished. "There you are," I heard Tony's voice behind me. He came over and rustled Antonio's hair while asking me, "Everything OK?" "Yes sir," I answered. "Good!" He boomed with a smile, "Now if you will excuse us Antonio, I need to talk with Kevin." We walked back up the stairs to the room at the end of the hall; three doors down from my own. When we got inside Tony closed the door and opened his arms. I ran into them. "A little scary, huh?" He asked. I nodded with my head on his chest. "I've never seen any place like this before." He looked around the room, taking it in, as if it was the first time he had ever seen it. "Yeah," he said almost to himself, "The old man did all right for himself." "Listen Kevin," he continued pulling me over to a huge chair in the corner by the window and sitting me down on his lap, "I told Marie that your mother and I had a fling; and that not wanting to cause the family any problems, I have been quietly taking care of the matter. I told her that I had been stopping by every now and again, when I was in the area, to see how things were going. I told her that your mom had developed some problems and I decided to cut her off; and bring you with me. Do you understand?" I nodded. "Good," he said, "Now, do you like your room?" "Yes sir," I said, "It's huge!" Tony laughed. "I guess it is. It's yours now. Did Antonio show you how to ring for William?" "Yes, sir," I answered again. "Good," he stated, "Now, I will be off on business for a week or so. You make yourself at home. Marie and Antonio will help you work out the details of living here." He reached into his jacket pocket and took out his wallet. He handed me three one hundred dollar bills. My mouth dropped open. I had never had a hundred dollar bill in my hands before, let alone three of them. I looked up at Tony. "Those are for you. It's play money," he explained, "For when you hit the town with Antonio. Don't worry about clothes or shit like that. That'll be taken care of. You use that to have some fun. OK?" "I will," I promised hugging and kissing him. "Now, I got to get some sleep," he said, "It's late and I have to get an early start." "Can I stay in here with you?" I asked. He laughed. "Sure, why don't you go grab a flick and you can curl up with me until you fall asleep." I ran down the stairs and grabbed "Terminator 2." It was one of my favorites. On the way out, I almost ran into Marie. "Sorry," I stammered. "It's OK," she said smiling and running her hand gently through my hair. "You going to watch a movie?" she asked looking at the video in my hand." "Yes ma'am," I answered, "Ton... I mean, Dad said I could stay with him until I fall asleep." She smiled at me and said, "Good-night then. We'll see you in the morning." As she walked toward the library, I couldn't help thinking again that she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. When I got back, Tony gave me pj's and a robe. I changed and curled up next to him in his bed. He hit the remote and the movie began. I was asleep before the previews were over. When I woke, I was in my own bed. I grabbed my robe and ran down the hall to Tony's room. "Come on in," he said when I knocked on the door. He was already dressed and making last minute checks to make sure he had everything. "I was just about to come and say good-bye to you," he explained. I went over to him and hugged him. I was feeling a little uneasy about Tony leaving but I was beginning to trust him more. "I wish I could come with you," I said. "Yeah, I know, that was the original plan" he said, "But as it turns out this will work out better for us both in the long run. Trust me." I said that I would and hugged him again. There was a knock on the door. It was William telling Tony that the car had been brought around to the front. We walked down the stairs to find Marie and Antonio waiting at the entry. Tony hugged them both and told them to take good care of `my boy.' Marie put her arm around my shoulder and said, "Tony, shame on you for even suggesting we would not." Tony smiled and knelt down. I went into his arms; and hugged him, and kissed him on the cheek, saying, "I'll miss you Dad." ***** Marie took me back inside saying, "Now to get you settled in young man." "Oh brother," commented Antonio, "I guess that means you have his life planned. Let me know when you've scheduled him to have some fun." Marie told him he could have me that very afternoon and mocking scolded him for not having more faith. I had never seen anyone speak to a mother like this. It was as if they were more friends than mother and son. They both smiled and laughed during the whole exchange; pretending to be fighting over me. Antonio finally said that he would be down by the boathouse and that I should join him there when "The General here is done with you." With that, Marie shoed him away and took me through the archway to the east of the entry. This room was as large as the library but completely different. There were a lot of paintings adorning the walls; a piano which I learned later was called a Grand Piano; there were bronze and marble piece of art; and some things I just couldn't figure out all neatly arranged to give the room an almost museum type atmosphere. "What's all this stuff?" I asked. "This is our gallery," Marie answered, "We like to bring prospective buyers here to show them what we have to offer." When I didn't seem to understand, Marie explained that the family was into high-end art items. Tony was out looking at what they hope were some promising pieces to add to the collection. They hoped to resale the items in the gallery, and those that Tony might purchase, for a "substantial return." We continued our journey through the east end of the house, with Marie explaining the value of this piece of art or that, all the while with her hand resting gently on my shoulder. I couldn't help wishing that she were my mom. I realized I couldn't remember any time when my real mom and I had walked, and talked in this fashion. We exited the main hall into a small sunroom facing a garden. The room, with its view, was so beautiful to me that when Marie said, "You shouldn't worry about that. You're home now." I realized that I had said, "I hope I never have to leave here," out loud and not to myself as I had thought. I was really embarrassed. I would never have let my thoughts slip so freely from my lips at home. What was happening to me? Why had I become so trusting? My head was telling me that this couldn't be real. I was taken away from the thoughts that were forming in my head by the entrance of two other women I hadn't seen before. The next three hours were spent measuring me and fitting me with one outfit or another. Marie would say, "No, no that is not his color at all!" or "I am not quite sure that matches his personality." I had never tried on so many clothes in my life! By the time it was over, I was exhausted and didn't care if they put me in a diaper; I just didn't want to try on another piece of clothing. "Please," I finally begged Marie, "I'm tired." She smiled at me and said, "OK, little one, you've been a good sport and God knows Antonio would never have put up with me fussing over him this long. I'll call for William to take you down to the docks. But Kevin, you are never, I mean never, to go out on the lake alone. God only knows what Tony would do if any harm came to you. Promise me." I promised and William arrived shortly after to take me to the boathouse. Antonio greeted me with a beautiful smile and a jovial spirit. "So," he said, "You escaped after all? I was beginning to wonder if I should come and rescue you!" We both laughed with me saying that it really wasn't that bad. "Bullshit," he retorted, "You've got to learn to pace yourself with mom or she'll be fussing with you like you are some damn porcelain doll. Believe me, I know." I looked at him understanding but not really agreeing. Was I tired? Yes. But I would let her fuss over me any time she wanted. It was what I always wanted my mom to do. "So, what are you up for," he asked, "I can't have Uncle Tony coming back to find that you've been in mom's clutches the whole time." We both laughed but I told him I didn't care. "Great!" he said, "Come on!" There were three boats in the boathouse. We took the smallest. Antonio fired up the engine and grinning said, "Hold on to your butt!" Before I could react, I was flat on my butt with him laughing as we sped away. It was the best time I ever had in my life! Antonio even let me steer. I actually got to drive a boat; if that is the way you say it. Antonio had me screaming with laughter and fear on the way back as he did `S' curves and circles in the water. Marie was furious with us both when we finally got in soaked and laughing like old friends that hadn't seen each other in years. "What were you thinking," she asked Antonio, "Look at you both! What were you trying to do drown the boy?" Antonio's laughter filled the room and was the catalyst for giving me a case of the giggles as well. "And don't you think for one minute I am not disappointed in you also," Marie scolded me, "I promised your father I would see after you! You could catch your death of cold!" That sent Antonio over the edge, and though I tried to apologize, his laughter made me laugh until I cried. In the end, I was sent to my room for a bath and dry clothes. I ate dinner in my room and sat and watched TV. Before she went to bed Marie came to check on me. "I'm sorry," I started but she knelt before me and looked me in my eyes saying, "I'm not mad at you Kevin, or Antonio, I know you were just having fun. But please understand, that won't stop me from worrying." She smiled at me and I couldn't help wrapping my arms around her. She giggled and hugged me close. I didn't mean too but I started to cry. I guess I was... I don't know. I mean, my mom would have just beaten the shit out of me. That I could handle, that I expected. But Marie wasn't mad. She was just worried, that I didn't know how to handle. I felt I had done something wrong, and yet, I wasn't going to be punished. I didn't know how to handle that. No matter what I did I couldn't get to sleep. So I decided to go to the kitchen to see if Fran had left anything around to nibble on. I guess, Antonio had the same idea. When I entered the kitchen, there he was with his nose stuck in the refrigerator pulling out sliced cheeses and meats. "Hey," he said when he turned and saw me standing there, "Couldn't sleep, ah?" He invited me to his room to share the snack, he had prepared, and a late night movie. I agreed right away. I think it was how quiet the house was that bothered me the most. No noisy party, no cars roaming up and down the street, no people yelling outside, no hushing brothers or sisters to keep mom from pounding the shit out of me; the usually signals for time to sleep. We sat in Antonio's room and nibbled on the cheeses and meats. Antonio poured us both glasses of wine; which at first, I protested saying that my mom said I wasn't allowed to drink. He reminded me, "Your mom ain't here. Besides, Uncle Tony and mom would think it ashamed to have these fine meats and cheese without it." So, in the end I had more than a few drinks and found out what it meant to be more than tipsy. Send comments to tom_cup@hotmail.com
