He wouldn't be arriving until 6:15 that morning. I was to get some rest so I had my wits about me while James left to wait at the airport for Tony's plane to arrive. I slipped out of my clothes and under the sheets wearing only my briefs and T-shirt. I was much more exhausted than I realized and fell into a deep sleep. I was awakened by the sound of voices in the connecting room. I knew immediately who one of the voices belonged to and jumped up, grabbing my robe, running into the other room. I was a little shocked and embarrassed to find not only Tony but two police officers and two other men in suits in the room. "Oh," I stammered, "I'm sorry." "There you are kiddo," Tony said waving me over. "I want you to meet some folks that are going to lend us a hand in sorting this thing out." I was introduced to the two guys in the suits first. One was Jeff Herman an assistant at the District Attorney's Office. The other was Michael Robbins he was one of the family's lawyers that worked out of Philadelphia. I was most interest in the cops though. I had learned from an early age that you weren't supposed to trust them. You go to them for help, and the next thing you know your whole family is in deep shit, you find yourself in Juvenile Hall. The thought quickly passed through my mind that I might have been set up and these guys were here to take me. But I pushed it away as quickly as it entered and moved close enough to Tony to grab his hand; showing him that I was a little intimidated by what was going on. "I think we are making Kevin a little nervous, " he said almost at once when I slipped my hand in to his, "Why don't we all sit." The men immediately did as Tony asked but I stood slightly behind Tony's chair facing the rest of the group. As it turned out, the cops were the brothers-in-laws of Mr. Herman and were both off duty but had agreed to come along in case things got "emotional." They followed us in their police cruiser as we drove slowly through roads filled with debris, abandoned cars, deserted buildings and dejected people. I was beginning to feel ashamed that Tony was going to see where I lived, use to live, but he put his arm around me and pulled me closer to him; making me feel like everything would truly be all right. As we rounded my block the first thing that caught our eyes was the little girl running away from a man who had just taken a swipe at her. "That's Donna," I said, "My sister." I was filled with guilt, remorse and fear. I knew that if I had been there she would not be the one being beat. She ran into the house just as the Limo stop in front of the door. Chuck was taking long strides as he approached the door; in his anger oblivious or ignoring the Limo parked out front until James opened the door and stepped out. "I don't know what fucking business you think you got in this neighborhood," he hissed, "But if I were you pussies I'd be going back the way I came." He snapped his head toward the door of the house and headed inside screaming, "Don't think I forgot about you cunt!" I was shaking. I hadn't known the effect that coming back would have on me. "Please," I said grabbing Tony's arm, "Can't we just go?" "I can see why you don't want to do this Kevin," said Mr. Herman, "but I think I can safely say from what I've seen already you are not going to have to stay here." We had, of course, already started to draw a crowd. The usual neighborhood gang that was into everybody's business wondering who was in the car, or who the car was there to pick up, and why there was a cop car parked in the neighborhood. "OK," said Mr. Robbins, "All we really need is for your mother to sign the release of parental rights and responsibility papers and then we are out of here. Let's try to make this short and sweet." He looked over at Mr. Herman who nodded with a frown. Tony tapped the window lightly and James opened his door. There was a rash of hushed whispers when the three suited men exited the car followed by me. The two uniformed officers joined us at the door. Mr. Herman knocked on the door twice before we heard Chuck scream, "Get that fucking door!" The door opened only slightly and a small dirty face peeped out. She looked around at the suited figures and her eyes widened as she saw the police officers but she gasped as she saw me. "Kevin!" she screamed and immediately Mr. Herman pushed his way inside and I was moved along with the tide of suits and uniforms. "What the fuck," cursed Chuck. "My name is Jeff Herman and I'm with the DAs office," I immediately noticed the difference in the way in which Mr. Herman introduced himself to Chuck and the way he had introduced himself to me. Chuck started studying the men and then his eyes fell on me. I stepped back almost on top of Tony. "We would like to see Mrs. Greer," Jeff said. Chuck seemed to relax a bit but his eyes never left mine. "Yeah, sure," he said, "Marcy, go get your momma." We waited almost fifteen minutes before mom came from the back bedroom. She looked like shit. I mean shit. Her hair wasn't combed and she looked like she hadn't bathed in a week. She had the look of someone that was either still drunk from the night before or coming down from being high. I couldn't tell which and most of the time it didn't matter. It really only meant that she was so out of it that Chuck could do anything he wanted. I started to get worried. I hadn't seen my brothers. Marcy, my youngest sister, was sitting silently next to Donna who had tears running down her face. I didn't know what was going on but I could imagine knowing Chuck. "What the fuck is this," mom slurred, "Can't you see I'm trying to sleep." "This won't take long," soothed Mr. Robbins, "Providing you cooperate." Mom sat down at the kitchenette, which was over loaded with dirty dishes. It looked and smelled like no one had cleaned the place since I was thrown out. Mom lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and flicked the ash on one of the plates on the table while exhaling. It didn't surprise me but she hadn't even noticed me until that moment. She sort of cocked her head and looked at me saying, "OK, shoot." "Mrs. Greer," Michael continued, "I represent Mr. Antonio Michaelangelo Bolognia of Chicago who came across your son Kevin some days ago alone and nearly freezing in the streets." He waited for some response from mom but I knew he would get none. She had that `I could give a fuck' look on her face as she took another drag on her cigarette. "Mr. Bolognia has gracious agreed to become Kevin's legal guardian provided, of course, you agree." He smoothly reached into his briefcase and pulled out some papers in a vanilla folder. "It is a simple matter," he continued, "of you signing over your parental rights to Mr. Bolognia." Mom crushed the cigarette on the plate. "I ain't signing shit," she said her eyes still glued on me, "Nice fucking clothes Kevin. What, you think cause they put you in a fucking suit you can come here and tell me what the fuck to do?" Chuck started laughing behind her and when she looked up at him I thought they might give each other a high five. "I'll tell you what," mom continued, "You... gentlemen... can get the fuck out my house and you, you worthless piece of shit, can get this shit cleaned up around here." I stopped breathing. I looked up into Tony's eyes and he smiled, steadying me. Chuck glared at us. "What y'all think?" Chuck said, "That just because some fat cat wants a pussy boy you can just scare us into doing what you want. Fuck you, you piece of shit!" "Fuck you!" I heard myself say and the room froze in silence. Donna looked up and our eyes met for the first time since I had come through the door. "Fuck you!" I said again taking a step forward but Tony put a hand on my shoulder keeping me a safe distance from Chuck. "You beat and abusive me; make me do all the shit work around this shit hole; throw me out in the cold with no money, food or clothing; you fuck and molest my sisters while sucking my mom dry; all the while pushing more and more drugs on her!" I screamed, "You're the piece of shit!" Donna started to cry and turned to Marcy. The two girls held each other as tears streamed down their faces. "That's a goddamn lie!" scream Chuck looking over at the officers. "No it's not," I screamed, "You're a fucking liar and a piece of shit!" All hell broke loose as Chuck jumped at me screaming, "You fucking bastard! I'll kill you!" Tony grabbed me and put himself between Chuck and me with my back against the door. Chuck was wrestled down by the two officers and handcuffed. They took his wallet out of his back pocket and called in his ID. My sisters were screaming in fear; crying hysterically. Mom was sitting stunned looking from Chuck to the girls and back again. "Don't you believe a goddamn word of it Barb," he said to mom. I tried to get to my sisters to calm them down but Chuck kicked at me from the ground, getting hit with one of the cop's nightstick for his trouble. I circled around him and sat beside Donna who grabbed me; throwing her arms around my neck crying uncontrollably. Chuck had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and was put in the back of the police car. "You think this is the end of it, you little shit?" he asked as they were taking him away, "Believe me, you ain't heard the last from me!" He spat at me and was wrestled out the door. "Well," said Mr. Herman, "It seems things have gotten a bit more complicated now. We now have reckless endangerment, child abandonment, child endangerment, sexual abuse, shall I go on, Mrs. Greer?" Tony moved forward and said, "Mrs. Greer. I am Tony Bolognia. I came here only for Kevin's sake. Your business is your own. But I am sure if you are reasonable, we can work this all out." He looked from Mr. Herman to Mr. Robbins who were both nodding. Michael handed Tony the papers and he placed then in front of my mom. "Sign them," he ordered handing her the pen. She wiped a tear from her cheek and began signing the papers as Mr. Robbins guided her through the documents. Tony came over to me. Donna was regaining some of her composure as he knelt down beside us. "You OK?" he asked placing a hand on her shoulder. She nodded and hugged him. He laughed and patted her on the back telling her she would be all right. "I want to see my brothers," I whispered to Tony. He nodded and Donna said, "I'll show you. We went back into the back of the house. The smell almost made me gag and Tony covered his mouth with his handkerchief. Robby was sitting locked in the bathroom closet in a pool of his own feces and urine. Jimmy, the youngest, was locked in his room; dirty in nothing but a filthy pair of briefs. It was seeing Richy that made me cry and bury my head into Tony's stomach. He was just lying on his bed staring up at the ceiling. It took nearly five minutes of coaching from Mr. Herman before he even acknowledged that anyone was in the room. His face was bruise and battered. His lip was busted and one of his ribs had been broken. He first said that he had been jumped by a couple of the kids in the neighborhood but when I told him that Chuck was gone; he cried painfully, asking why Chuck hated him so much. Tony went back out to talk with mom. She swore she hadn't any idea of what was going on. "Well," Tony said, "It really doesn't matter. Does it? I'll tell you what I'm going to do for you and your family. Michael here is going to set up an account for the children and we are going to make sure they are well taken care of and not just stuck into some foster home and forgotten. Kevin is now my responsibility. As for you, you and this Chuck person will have to answer for what these children have gone through. However, should you pull yourself together and get your other children back, I am not betting on it, but if by some miracle you do, I will supplement your income to make sure you are able to take proper care of them as long as you remain dry. Make no mistake, Mrs. Greer, I do this not because I feel any sympathy for you. I do not even like to pollute myself by being in the same room with you. I do this because I know it will make Kevin happy. So believe me when I say, should you cross me, I shall fall on you like the hand of God." I wanted to spend some time with my brothers and sisters before we left but Mr. Herman said that it wasn't possible at this point. They all need to be taken to the hospital for exams. Within a few minutes my old home was swarming with Child Welfare people. Mom was taken into custody and the kids were taken to the Sex Trauma Unit of Children's Hospital. Mom looked at me as she was being taken away and said, "I didn't know, Kevin." I turned to her and said, "You didn't care enough to want to know. You just wanted to party. You never cared about any of us." Tony asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital to see my siblings. I was so glad he was going to let me see them. One of the Child Welfare counselors asked if I was one of the kids that use to live there. When I told her yes, she said I needed to be processed and would have to come with her. Mr. Robbins stepped in explaining that I did not live there anymore; and hadn't in recent history; and was, in fact, in the custody not of Mrs. Greer but of Mr. Bolognia. She apologized for the misunderstanding and Tony and I headed for the car, and the hospital. Mr. Herman stayed back at the house with the Child Welfare Workers helping them to understand what had happened. We dropped Mr. Robbins off at his office. He patted me on the knee before getting out of the car. "I'll get started on the next phase as soon as I get to my office," he said shaking Tony's hand. He looked at me again, smiled and rustled my hair, saying, "As fearless as any Bolognia." I wasn't feeling fearless though and held on to Tony in the back seat, crying as we drove to the hospital. "I'm such a coward," I cried. "No you aren't," said Tony, "You're a Bolognia." Send comments to: tom_cup@hotmail.com
