Chapter 20

Time moves on and so do I.

	I asked "how does KFC sound for dinner tonight" everyone said yes
except Richard as he had never had their chicken, as the largest chicken
joint in New York was called `Chicken Delight' and that was just so-so, so
with 7 of us for dinner I ordered 2 family dinners, a total of 20 pieces of
chicken 2 quarts of mash potatoes with gravy on the side 2 pints of
coleslaw 12 biscuits and I added 3 large bottles of Pepsi and 14 fried
apple pies this would be a good meal and Bill and Marty went in Bill's jeep
and Bill said that he would cover it.

	Marty, Bobby and John set the table up with iced glasses and
silverware and I held Richard in my arms and as I did he said "dad I am
blind not stupid, I could have helped my brothers with the table setup" I
kissed his cheek and said "some times they like to feel they are needed"
Richard squirmed and slid to the floor and as he did I watched as he moved
around the table as deftly as any sighted person could making adjustments
to the silver ware placement and as I watched Marty, Bobby and John stood
stock still and were amazed by his movement and when he was done I noticed
a symmetry to the settings and the exactness of every thing and I said
"Richard can you as a blind boy how do you do it", he turned and blushed
and said "I don't know but for some reason I could sense the placement of
all of the plates knives, forks and spoons and I knew the proper setup".

	In the future no one ever considered Richard as that poor blind
boy, but in the mean time I needed to find him a real school that could
teach the blind, and within a week I found exactly what I wanted plus the
school was located next door to the school I was in so taking him to school
would be very easy as I was settling down to living with 6 boys in one
house I started to feel like I had built the corner that I was in and if I
didn't pass the torch to some one else I would be buried in this town so I
sat down with Bill and Joe and the following is as close as I could be to
what happened.

	It was a weekend and I asked Bill and Joe into my office and for
the first time I closed the office door and I said "gentlemen I have hit a
wall and I must be moving on as I have been informed that I had enough
credits to graduate in the form I want to be credited with, and that means
that I now have a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering and with a
pilots licence I want to join the United States Air Force and if I do I
will be what I want to be an Air Force Pilot, but I have a large problem it
is called 4 boys under 18 that I am responsible for and other than Richard
I can walk out without any squeamishness but Richard is my responsibility
and to put it mildly I love him and I think he would seriously miss me and
I must leave some one in charge plus I need to transfer Marty, John and
Bobby court issued papers and before I leave I will go see my favorite
judge and have one or both of you named as there their Parents ad litem and
I want this to happen in less than a month so I can get my ass to Colorado
Springs and set up a place for Richard to go to school and stay during the
week while I am on in school at the Air Force Academy and it will only be
for 6 months because I have a degree and a pilots licence plus on Friday I
received a notice that a Ryan Air Coupe, that was Harold's is sitting at
the New Jersey, Northern District Air port and I have 30 days to move it,
or I will be responsible for the hanger rent, and as a parting shot Al will
be coming here to school in September so all of you will have an other hand
for help and I have had enough of this town and school and considering that
Harold and my dad picked it out I wasn't that happy but the only thing I
will miss is you guys and Marty, John and Bobby".

	Both of them sat with there collective mouths open and I said "I
know that this type of decision was in the past made by me but things
change, sorry" ,but I though that I had over whelmed them and I was upset
that they were not able to handle it, "hey guys please answer me" Bill was
the first to come to life and he said "I knew that you were wearing a
little thin with the Prof and other things but it is a total shock that you
want leave, but as you said being a `permanent student' is not what you
want and neither is being a baby sitter to us, and in us I include Marty,
Bobby and John but your time table is a little stiff and with the new mall
opening next week I think I will need you more than ever, but that is my
problem not yours and with the settlement from both the hospital and the
trucking company both you and Richard are set for life, and when you add
the money I owe you we are talking about a lot of money, using my cerebral
calculator I think it will be around $1,500,000 in round figures I don't
think you and Richard will have any problems and in truth I wish you and
Richard all good luck, and all the happiness you deserve", now I felt a
little rotten as that I was to abandon them but this chapter of my life was
over and I needed to move on but I still felt that I was abandoning them
and that was not what I was there for and they would make it without me and
Richard and I were to be a family a small family but he was the only family
I wanted and seeing that I loved him all the family I needed.

	A week later we were at New Jersey, Northern District Airport and
seeing that Joe had a drivers licence he traveled with us with one purpose
in mind he would drive back to Indiana and something that I had made a
decision about he would be taking Richard with him.

	In truth I was starting a new life and for now Richard could not be
with me and Joe was told the whole thing, plus he was stuck with taking
Richard back with him as I would not be allowed to take him with me to
Colorado Springs but I didn't have the guts to tell Richard that he
wouldn't be living with me for at least a year and I think he will hate me
if I don't tell him my self, but in a small motel just outside of the
Airport I told him the truth and much to my surprise he took it like a man,
as we sat and watched the light aircraft taking of as we ate breakfast I
said "Richard it will only be for a year and when I have my own place I
will come for you".

	When I was 24 and many things had turned sour, a recap at 17 my
Father died, at 22 I left college and joined the military but I could not
handle their bull shit so I received a General Discharge, under Honorable
conditions good but not great, at 24 a month after I got home from the
military my mother died, and at 25 because I had nothing to call my own
except a car, I moved in with my Sister and her brood and her oldest Bobby
was 14 and he had a severe speech problem more than a mild stutter he had
problems saying what he had on his mind and considering that two of my
brother-in-law's relatives were gay a brother and an uncle, added to the
fact I was his Mother's gay brother some of the past actions (that will be
explained later in the story) of Bobby were indicative of that he was also
gay 1st he loved to be held 2nd some nights he would gravitate to my bed
