When Luke got home, the front door was open so he climbed the steps instead of going through the tunnel that led by the cellars to the back garden. A large suitcase they normally only used when they went on holiday was sitting in the hall. He walked through to the kitchen and looked out into the garden, but his mum was nowhere to be seen. He checked the family room and then finally the front Lounge. Normally this room was reserved for holiday celebrations and special visitors. His mum sat there with his step dad, talking quietly. With the heavy oak door closed and distracted by their conversation, they had not heard him come home, but as the door swung open they both stopped speaking. Luke's mum had been crying. Her eyes were red and she was wringing one of her lacy hankies in her hands. Luke stopped, trying to guess what was going on, but he wasn't sure and didn't know what to say. It really upset him to see his mum crying. James saw the confused look draw wrinkles in the boy's forehead. He stood and walked over to Luke and guided him to sit on the couch beside his mother. "Luke," James sounded very serious and Luke wondered if he had done something wrong and was about to get told off. It must have been something very bad, but he couldn't remember doing anything bad. "Luke, you grandmother, your mum's mum, is very poorly and I'm going to take your mum over there for a while so she can look after her. I'm staying there for the weekend and I'll be back on Monday, so you'll be staying at Evan's till Monday and Monday night after school you'll go back there and I'll pick you up when I finish work. Sue said she'd love to have you for the weekend and she was sure Evan would be pleased too. Is that Ok?" "What's wrong with Grama' Pat?" Luke's eyes glazed with tears. "We don't know for sure. She went into hospital for some tests and is coming home today, but the hospital says she will need looking after till she has an operation. We'll know more once we have been to see her. I am sure she will be Ok, or they wouldn't have let her go home." "How long are you going for, mum?" As she spoke, for the first time, her voice croaked with emotion, "I don't know, dear. Not for too long, I hope. You'll be fine here with James though and you'll be able to go to Evan's after school each day, 'til James picks you up." She hugged her son, as much to comfort herself as to reassure him. They went into the hall where James lifted the big case. Luke saw a smaller bag he hadn't noticed before, packed with his own overnight things and a few clean clothes. They all climbed into James' car and he drove the few streets down to Evan's terraced home. Sue heard the car doors and went out to meet them. She hugged Luke's mum and then they all went inside, into the front lounge. It was the first time Luke had been in Evan's front room. Most homes had large kitchens or kitchen-diners and that was where people spent most of their time. The front Lounge was only used on special occasions. Sue served tea and Luke and Evan sat on their best behaviour. Everyone was very serious and the atmosphere had rubbed off on both boys. Finally, Helen and James left. Sue and the boys watched the car turn at the end of the street and then went back indoors. Luke was still in his school clothes, so Sue's first instruction was that he should go up to Evan's room, unpack his things and get changed. Evan's room was quite small compared to his own. There was Evan's bed, a chest of drawers, and a single wardrobe and under the bed were two large pine boxes on rollers that contained all Evan's toys. Evan's dad insisted that everything went back into the boxes each night before he went to bed and Evan had received a few smacks for not complying. Luke removed his grey school trousers and jumper. His white shirt was not as white as it had been that morning. That afternoon they had all painted their memories of a school trip to Chester Zoo. Luke had lion mane yellow all over his cuffs and parrot green on his collar, although he couldn't remember how that got there. Standing in his grey socks, white briefs and vest, he pulled his play jeans and a tee shirt from his overnight bag. Just at that moment, Evan burst into the room to find out what was taking so long. He dived at Luke and both boys fell laughing onto the bed. They play fought and rolled around, eventually standing and using the old bed as a trampoline. Sue shouted up the stairs, but the boys were making so much noise they didn't hear her. She climbed the stairs and stormed into the room, but an even-tempered person by nature, Sue was soon playing with the boys rather than disciplining them. Both boys were extremely ticklish and this gave her an unfair advantage over them. After ten minutes, with a head under each arm, she had wrestled the boys down and held them both till they stopped resisting. "Right, you two, Luke, finish getting changed and then you can both go out and play and get from under my feet 'til your dinners' are ready." Luke pulled on his jeans and tee shirt, pulled out his play shoes and slipped them on without even undoing the laces. The boys tore down the stairs, leaping the last five down into the hall. They tore out into the street and down to the playground at the end. They swung on the swings, climbed on the climbing frame, spun on the roundabout and made each other bounce out of their seats on the seesaw. They hid behind trees, rolled in the grass and played soldiers in the bushes. Time lasts forever when you are a child and Luke's grandmother's illness was far from his mind. They avoided a group of older children, who had descended on the playground and were now holding court around the swings, by becoming spies, hiding again in the bushes and behind trees, spying on the enemy, the other children. As bright afternoon sun turned to hazy evening, Luke checked his watch, a birthday present, to see if it was time to go in yet. They had 15 minutes left and they decided to start walking back slowly. They passed No. 13 where Mrs Hazel lived, a batty old woman who had a dozen cats. All the kids said she was a witch and most even crossed over the road and walked on the other side so as not to go too close. But that meant passing No.12. That was Mr Haddon. He had lived alone since he wife died, though none of the children could remember her. He was a bit creepy and shouted out his window at anyone who went near his house. No. 9 was Mrs Kent. Her son was in the army, but made time for the neighbours' kids whenever he was home on leave and sometimes went drinking with Evan's dad. No. 5 was Evan's and as they approached they could hear Evan's parents arguing inside. "That happens a lot now." "Why? What are they arguing about?" "Sometimes it's me, but mostly it's about money." "So what d'we do?" "Well, we can wait and get into trouble for being late, or..." "What?" "Or we can go in and get shouted at for interrupting." They sat on the doorstep for a few minutes, waiting for the voices inside to subside. When it was obvious they weren't going to, Evan decided they should just go in and brave it. After all, perhaps dad wouldn't be so loud once he saw that Luke was there too. They closed the door behind them as quietly as they could and walked through into the kitchen. Both adults stopped shouting and looked at the boys. "Right, well." Sue looked flushed, but busied herself setting the table for dinner. "Sit down boys and I'll serve dinner. Are you joining us, Joe, or going to the pub again?" She stared at her husband until he too sat down at the table. He was not a happy man. He still looked as if he could explode at any moment. When Luke had been before, he knew things were not good and sensed a tension, but this was so different. Joe's face was red and his fists clenched, one each side of his dinner plate. He looked at both boys and then back at his wife. She had turned to the stove and started dishing out their dinner, beef stew and potatoes. There seemed to be a lot more potatoes than beef though. Luke really liked the big flour dumplings that Sue made. They were soaked in the gravy and were very filling. After an almost silent dinner, the boys went up to Evan's room and played for a while till Sue said it was time for their baths. Although they went into the bathroom together, they normally bathed separately. One sitting on the closed toilet seat while the other bathed. Tonight, Evan's mum said they needed to be very quick and in bed to avoid any more trouble from his dad, so they decided just to get in together. Standing opposite each other naked, they both laughed. They splashed, bringing Sue back upstairs to tell them off. Understanding the need to be quiet, they still found it hard. They were young boys full of life and energy and it was Friday night! No school tomorrow! They lathered up and then sat down to wash it off. Neither was embarrassed. They had been friends for a long time and seen each other naked many times. As younger children they had indulged in some mutual exploration, comparing their penises and balls, even being brave enough on a couple of occasions to touch each other, but that was a long time ago. Evan squeezed some shampoo from a green bottle and then handed it to Luke. They lathered their hair and made the lather stick up like horn, beginning to get loud again, until Evan remembered about his dad and told Luke to shush! They rinsed and got out. Sue had put two big bath towels on the radiator and they were both now really warm. The boys wrapped themselves in the huge warm towels and patted themselves dry. Being boys, when they had finished they neither hung up, nor put their used towels in the linen basket: they just dropped them on the floor and ran out of the bathroom across the landing and into Evan's room. They didn't notice Evan's dad coming up the stairs, but he saw the two naked 10 year olds running and pushing each other. He held his tongue, but was cross that, despite their current money problems, Sue had agreed to look after and feed Luke for the weekend. She was at work all day Saturday and that meant that he would be looking after the boys and he was in no mood to be bothered by two 10-year-olds mucking about! The boys pulled on their pyjamas and climbed, one at each end, into Evan's bed. Their feet touched and immediately a foot fight erupted beneath the covers, throwing them into disarray. Soon they were in a heap on the floor and the boys had begun play wrestling on the bed. Sue came up, sorted the sheets and told them both to settle down. Just 10 minutes later she was back up again telling them to quieten down or Evan's dad would come up. Both boys knew that was something they didn't want and sobered up considerably. They talked quietly for another half hour or so, until both of them fell asleep, their legs entangled beneath the bed sheets. More to come...
