Part 1 Walking the Dog I was on my own, and despite my poor health I had to walk the dog. Sam was back at Uni and the 'pets pals' walker had had to cry off at the last moment. I wrapped up well, the night time temperatures were dropping as low as 4 degrees, and we set off along our usual pathways. I live in the south of England, inside a National Park, the walks are stunning, both day and night. I left the roadway and went up a track into the park, mainly because I knew that 15 minutes in the cold wind would leave me needing to piss! I could hear young voices, and some singing in the distance and guessed, correctly, that the Scouts were out on a night walk. It was clear that they were on a parallel pathway about 300 yards east of me. Knowing that they could not see me from that distance in the dark, despite a strong 3/4 moon, I decided to take a leak in the hedgerow. I was just shaking off the last drops when I realised that a small group of the scouts were on my pathway. I tucked myself in, made sure I was decent and then pulled the dog, Edgar J, to one side. The oldest of the boys (I guessed he was about 14) spoke as he got closer; "May I stroke it please?" I smiled at the double entendre and said, "Sure but he will jump up, and his paws are a bit dirty!" One of the much younger kids then grinned and said;"Oh he didn't mean the dog Mister!" The rest of the boys giggled, as only cheeky boys can, while the older one blushed furiously. "Sorry son,I'm sure you'd love to, but you'll have to wait until you are 16" I told him with a smile, "plus I don't work with an audience!" There was yet more laughter and I noticed him drop something as he herded the other kids on towards the road. As they left he turned to me and made a hand sign which I took to mean wait here! Sure enough as soon as the boys rounded the next bend I hear him cuss; "Shit I must have dropped my compass when we saw that man with his dog!" Something else was said more quietly then he carried on "Eagle Patrol wait here for me, I'll be right back, Tom as APL you are in charge 'till I get back. Don't move from this spot!" Seconds later the boy came dashing up the path, and I handed him the compass that he had dropped on the floor. "What was THAT all about?" I asked him He pulled his wallet from his pocket and showed me his drivers licence; "See I am already 16, but no one will do stuff with me!" I looked around to see if I could see the hidden cameras, or the big burly police men waiting to pounce as soon as I incriminated myself. "Look..." I started. "Ross" he interrupted offering his hand. I shook it and continued, "Peter" I introduced myself "Look Ross do you have any idea how risky it is to try and pick up guys like that?" The disappointment in his face was immediate and he turned to go back to his patrol. I touched his arm "Ross, do you like dogs?" bit of a stupid question as he had been stroking Edgar J since we started talking. "Yes, I wish we could have one, but my sister is allergic to everything, so we had to get rid of ours!" "Look take my card and ask your parents if you may do some dog walking for cash. Anything else we can talk about another time, if YOU want to?" "Seriously?" he asked, his face beaming enough to make day out of night! "What's his name, by the way?" "Yes seriously, I'm recovering from a long illness and my dog walkers have let me down again. I'd be happy to give you £15 a night for walking the Edgar J, but only after I have spoken to your mum and dad about it! You'd better call the patrol back, so they don't think that I'm doing something terrible to you!" I added. "Oh yeah! EAGLES, ON ME now!" he called."Edgar J, that's a strange name though" "He's like a Hoover when he sees food, so I named him after the US head of the FBI Edgar J Hoover!" "Cool!" Ross said, and I handed him my card. "When do you think I could meet up with your parents Ross?" "Well any time this weekend for mum, dad's in jail so no need to talk to him!" he explained. "Sorry to hear that buddy" I told him. "Don't be, he used to rape me and my sister, and beat the fuck out of mum when she tried to stop him." he spat out venomously. "He only had to ask me and I'd have done anything willingly, but not like that!" I put an arm round his shoulder and said quietly, as the other boys were almost upon us; "Anytime you want to talk son, you have my numbers on that card!" With that the others arrived back and Ross pocketed my card before shouting "Eagle Patrol, Fall in!" The boys lined up and he introduced me "This is Peter, he's been ill for a while and I'm going to be helping him to walk his dog, Edgar J. I want you guys to find out by next Friday about a famous American called Edgar J, and see if you can guess why the dog is called that!" There were some murmurs of dissent and he added, "Anyone who gets the right answer wins a tuck shop token!" Dissent became enthusiasm at the prospect of free sweets from the tuck shop! At that moment Edgar J saw a rabbit and tried to dash off, causing me to fly ass over tit and land in the mud. Ross grabbed the leash from my hand and told his 2 biggest scouts to help me up. Though I tried to refuse help I realised that I was not going to get up on my own, and the boys helped me, only to discover that my walking stick, that I use to balance, was broken in two. Ross shone a torch round and spied a hazel tree and sent a boy to cut a strong branch. He used a survival knife that was in the rucksack carried by the Patrol Leader, Ross and found a long straight branch, with a curved branch at the end. In no time at all I was on my feet, new stick in my hand, being helped along by a number of very cute boys! As we reached the road it was evident that the rest of the Scout Troop were waiting for the Eagles, and the Scout Leader came over to see what the problem was. I quickly explained that the quick thinking of the boys had saved me from the prospect of spending the night up there, until some early morning jogger could find me! I had discovered that the boys, by coming in last, had missed out on a prize (tuck shop tokens!) and might even fail a night navigation test. "Skip" I said using the name given to scout leaders when I was a scout," Eagle patrol showed all the skills I would expect from a team of very well trained young men, they helped me to my feet, and the PL made sure my dog was secure while they got me a replacement stick for the one I broke when I fell. If all your scouts are just half as good as they are, you have a top rate troop!" The eagles, meanwhile, had gone to the support vehicle and got hot drinks for themselves, and without being told had brought me a mug of warm tea, and some in a bowl for Edgar J! "You see what I mean?" I asked the adult leader. "Well done guys, this will get a special mention next week!" he praised them. "I gather that they may have missed out on a prize because they were last in?" I asked, pulling my wallet from my pocket. "Yes the winning patrol got a £10 tuck shop token!" he told me. "How many patrols do you have all together?" I asked. "Eight in all, why?" "Here is £80, I would like all of them to have free tuck, I am sure that any of your lads, and lasses, would have helped me in the same situation." "I can't, we can't..." the leader started. "Come on, first the youngsters help me, and then you insult me?" I asked him with a smile, pushing the cash into his hand. "I'm just recovering from the big C, and I think that a night on the hills might have been the death of me, so they saved my life!" Edgar J was getting a little bored by now and started to tug at the lead again. Ross grabbed him again "Edgar J, SIT!" he commanded, the dog sat and pushed his head into the boys knee, looking up at him, waiting for the next command. "Well Sir" the scout leader started, "Peter" I corrected him. "Well Peter, do you have far to go?" I told him where I lived, about a mile and a half away. "We'll all walk that way, it's not too far off our route, that way we can make sure that you make it home safely" So, after setting off with just a dog I returned home with about 30 kids and 3 adults! Ross held onto the dog and the others in his patrol fussed over me to make sure I was OK. Skip chatted about scouting, having guessed that I was once a scout too, and asked if I had ever considered becoming a helper. "I'm not sure that it would work out" I told him, "I'm Gay and last time I looked into it the scouting movement was kicking Gays out, rather than recruiting them!" On hearing this Ross grinned at me and walked even closer. "Well they no longer refuse helpers on grounds of their sexuality, though the hoops I had to jump through were many and difficult!" Skip explained, showing me a 'rainbow' badge. "I don't think I could cope, health wise, with having all those testosterone charged bodies around me!" I added, with a wink. Skip put his arm round Ross's shoulder and said, "yes they can be a bit tiring. Would you perhaps be willing to come and give a talk about your health experiences? What sort of cancer did you have?" "Testicular" I said "I doubt if parents would want me talking to their kids about that?" "Well could I have your number anyway, and we might chat more about it some other time?" he asked. I handed him a card and said "call me any time!" He looked at my card, "Oh IT training consultant? Maybe you'd be willing to help the kids do their IT badges, no one here has enough knowledge to do them, and we have to rely on help from other troops at summer camp to get IT badges done!" "Call me in the week and we can talk about it, and also find out if the movement would even allow me near the kids!" When we got to the door Ross asked "Peter, do you have another stick you can use?" "Yes I have several, why?" "I'd like to finish off this hazel one for you, and make if look better, if that's OK?" "Sure, if you want to, I'd be more than happy to have one that you guys have made!" So we parted, Eagle patrol taking my old broken stick, and the new hazel 'shepards crook' and details of how to get in touch. I went in after thanking them, and getting thanks back for the donation, and fed and watered the dog, before collapsing in the hallway.
