“Hi there Hunter, it's Andrew. Do you have a few minutes?”

“Good as well. So, did you talk to Harley?”

“Yes, and he's excited. My soon to be ex wife has to go away this weekend, she leaves Friday morning, so I'd like to pack what we wanna bring and come out on Friday, if that's okay with you.”

“Good, see you Friday.” And they hung up.

“What was that about?” Teddy asked as soon as Hunter entered.

“It was Harley's dad. They're coming Friday and they're gonna live here as well.”

“Not so good. Look, I need you to come get Carson, I think he needs to come live with you.”

“I hope to, don't worry. I'll get everything all done.”

They hung up only a minute later and then Hunter told Teddy all that he would not have caught. They got ready to go though and headed to pick up Carson.

On their way, they talked happily and arrived at Carson's in good time. They both headed to the door.

“Uncle Hunter, I get to come live with you.”

“I know, and I never made it any easier, and for that I'm sorry, and ashamed.”

“Don't feel bad Mom, I understand now.”

“What on earth did you have them build you, a hotel?”

“Not quite, at least in the normal sense, but in a way, close. We're not telling you any more 'til we get there though, so don't worry.”

“Then where are we?”

“No, it's not my house, it's our house. Even when I started the planning and building of all this, I knew that you'd be coming here eventually. I knew that eventually you'd snap and tell your mom who and what you are and I knew what it'd do to your relationship, which has been strained for a good few years already. I also knew that somehow or another I was gonna try and adopt another kid or two, so I made it the best possible place for all that we love.” Hunter said, and then without even getting out of the truck, they drove all around and looked at everything, telling Carson everything that he needed to know.

“Wow, this place is amazing. I wish Harley could come live here with us, has his dad called you yet?”

“As a matter of fact, he has, and they are. Harley and his dad are gonna be here tomorrow some time. They're leaving his mother.”

They are just walking into the house now, because they have finished their tour, and Carson is amazed at how it looks as well.

“Yeah, we still can't believe that we live here.” Hunter said.

“I can't believe that I get to live here.”

“Let's go get all your things unpacked, and then we'll get you a room set up.”

He agreed, and then they all headed back out to the truck to start grabbing Carson's things. Just as they were coming back with their first arm load each, Hunter's phone rang, so he set his load down and answered.

“Hello, Hunter speaking, how may I help you?” He does not recognize the number, and he is advertising, so he feels that the full business greeting is warranted.

“Hello Hunter, this is Jane over at the SPCA.”

“Oh, hello Jane, how can I help you this evening?”

“I don't know if you remember or not, but I was the one you spoke to the other day about animals for your guest ranch.”

“Yes, I remember you Jane, how can I help you this evening?”

“We just had a horrendous call about several horses and a few other farm animals that were very nearly dead. We've just left after finishing our investigation, the Veterinarian is still there and will likely have to stay all night getting the poor animals all fixed up. So, the reason for our call this evening, is we're wondering if you're still looking to adopt more animals. There's seven horses, four male, three female, all of them fixed. There are also a few female milking goats, a milking cow, and a few barn cats. If you'd be interested, we can't possibly house this many animals, we'd love to bring them out to you for the cost of what the Vet's charging us, which he said would be roughly three thousand dollars.”

“Absolutely I'd be interested. Would you like me to pay the Vet directly, or you, because either could be arranged.”

“May as well pay the Vet. His name's Andrew, I'll give you his number.”

“No need, is it 555-555-5555” Hunter said, giving Harley's dad's number.

“Yes, as a matter of fact, it is.”

“He's a friend, so we'll work out a deal together then, tell him they're coming to my place and he'll be happy. He's gonna be my Vet for the ranch anyway, so it'll be perfect.”

“Oh, that is perfect. They'll likely be ready for transport tomorrow some time, and they're gonna need lots of good quality food and some rest as they recover. They were all nearly starving to death. The only animals that weren't were the cats, seems they're really good mousers, which might be the reason that the other animals are at least not infected and or infested with all sorts of diseases. They're just very nearly starved to death.”

“That's such a shame. Do you know what happened?”

“Yeah, found the owner dead, sounds like he's been dead for at least a couple weeks, no one found him 'til today. It's not like we can blame anyone, but it's still horrendous to see such beautiful animals in such poor condition.”

“No kidding, but how can the milking animals still be producing?”

“Automated milking parlor, and they had only just enough grass to feed them, though it looks like it ran out probably yesterday, their pasture was very nearly barren when we got there.”

“Oh, so they're not in horrible shape yet, just poor.”

“I'd say bad. It doesn't appear as if any of them has had any real vet care in ages, probably the old guy was getting too sick to care for them. We've got hoof damage on all of them, a couple infected cuts, and it doesn't look as if they've had enough food for a long time.”

“Yeah.”

“How hard would it be to get it all?”

“When we confiscate animals, we take all their gear as well, we get to sell it off to help pay for our operations. There also doesn't appear to be any family, so no one would ever question it anyway by the sounds of it. I could bring you all the tack, and even the milking parlor, though it likely has to be cleaned very well now, as well as any of the gear that you can use, and you can make an offer.”

“Excellent, bring as much as you can, and I'll give the SPCA a donation of five thousand dollars.”

“That'd be much appreciated.”

“Good, then we all win.” Hunter said happily, because his automated milking machines were each a lot more than that, and then all the gear he knew would be lots, so he will save himself a huge amount. “I agree. Well, we'll see you sometime tomorrow then.”

“Excellent, see you tomorrow.”

As soon as they hung up, Hunter told the boys all that they would not have figured out on their own, and continued taking Carson's things up to his new room, which he had already gone and picked.

The boys are happy to be getting more animals, and Carson asked to go out to the barn to meet the other animals that they already have as soon as they are finished.
