Wesleygrainger@gmx.com Chapter 14: Life is pretty good! My boys and I have gotten into a good routine and with Anna commanding our house, we've excelled! My volunteering at Father Dimitri's school has been a blessing, I'm only there for 6 hours and home when the boys return from their private school. Anna has been helping with Lyn's piano practice, while I focus on Noah and Jai's swim meets. Jai actually chose diving and Noah is a dedicated member of the 4x400 relay team. Both have advanced in their respective fields. It's hard to believe, but 3 months into school and both boys are looking at advancing in their teams! My philanthropy continues to grow, due to the positive news reports on the orphanage and children's hospital. I handle the details via emails and phone calls. Hwang and I talk pretty much every night to make sure all is going as planned at the orphanage. He and his tribe will be coming to Palo Alto in 6 months, after school ends. So here we are, it's December and I'm getting hyped about Christmas. Jai and Lyn have never had a Christmas and I truly want them to fully enjoy the season. I've rented the same cabin that Noah and Helen rented for snow skiing last season up in the cascades. Helen is coming over from Seattle to spend time with Noah and I'm practically like that Elf guy in the movies! Santa!! The boys have one week of school left and then it's 2 weeks in the snow. I roll over in bed and look at Noah, he's still doing his cute little snoring thing and has a bit of a smile on his face. I know I've got to get up, but I just want to take a moment and just feel grateful that I almost ran this beautiful boy over on a ski run, and glad I didn't. I quietly got out of bed and walked over to our bathroom. Just as I began to pee, I felt a breeze as Noah slipped in beside me and began to pee as well. I looked at his face and he was smiling as he crossed our streams. "Morning Uncle Wes!" I smiled back and patted his shoulder lightly, "Morning love, busy day ahead for us all, best be hitting the shower before we're late to breakfast." And with that special word, "breakfast", Noah jumped into high gear. He dropped his undies, opened the shower door, set the temp and kicked on the music that he and I share at bath time. He turned around just as he stepped into the shower, "Come on then! Can't have Anna waiting for us!" I chuckled as I walked to the shower, "Is it Anna your concerned with or the breakfast you might miss?" He smiled sheepishly, " Why Anna of course!" We both laughed as we began our daily ritual of bathing each other meticulously. A little bit of pleasure before the storm of another day... As we were getting dressed, my door opened and Lyn came barreling in, "Morning Dad! Hurry up! I'm starving!" He jumped into my arms and we kissed each other's cheeks. I hugged him tight and marveled at how lucky I've been with all my boys. Movement caught my eye as Jai stepped into the room, he had a anxious look on his face. "Morning Dad, we gotta get a move on! Anna's probably waiting on us!" I laughed and said, "You three seem awfully concerned about Anna's welfare this morning!" I waved towards the door and they bolted like true Olympic track stars. As we entered the kitchen, true to form, Lyn ran into Anna's waiting arms. "Good morning my love, I hope you slept well!" Lyn smiled and released her from his hug, "I slept really good! I dreamt of my piano recital! I hope I do gooder than I did at practice Friday." We all were smiling at his choice of words. Anna smiled at Lyn, "You will be better than good my boy! You have done better than any other first year student! I can't wait to see you play Friday!" Lyn beamed his huge smile and hugged Anna again, "I want you and Dad to be proud of me, that's all..." I turned Lyn around to face me, "We are all very proud of you already Son! You have blown us away with how fast you picked up on the piano, plus you are my Son, which means I know you're gonna be fantastic! I looked at Noah and Jai, "Right guys?" Noah and Jai both moved in to smother Lyn with their love and both agreed they were very proud of Lyn. Lyn was all smiles as Anna cleared her throat, "My food is getting cold! Quit dilly dallying around, go eat!" The boys all leapt towards the table as Anna handed me my Kona, she smiled at me and said, "no pancakes for you Wesley, you get granola and yogurt today." I groaned as the boys laughed... Anna's had me on a diet for two months and although I miss my big breakfast, I've lost the 15 pounds she thought I could lose. I get one great breakfast a week, normally on Saturday, and she packs my lunch for my days at the Greek Orthodox Boy's school. As I sip my Kona, I look around the table and the boys are chatting between mouthfuls of pancakes. I feel blessed right now as they all treat each other as equals and truly care about one another. Jai cut up the boys sausage as usual and they both thanked him. Jai was the older brother personified. Attentive, caring and sometimes stern, but the younger ones knew where his heart was, so they respected him greatly. Jai looked over at me and I smiled at him. He positively beamed now that he felt secure here and knew that I loved him unconditionally. He excelled at all things academically and in diving, but what he really did well was being the thoughtful Son and caring Brother. Best thing Hwang ever did was bring me and these boys together, I can't imagine what life would be without them. Soon enough we were out the door, Anna giving out hugs to all. Jai and Noah both gladly accepted her hugs now as she showed them her caring side as well as her Drill Sergeant side! She handed me my lunch as she hugged me, "Have a great day Wes, and be safe for us all." I hugged her back and kissed her cheek, "I'll be home on time, and we have some clothes shopping to do this evening, so dinner is in town tonight." With that, I drove the boys down to the gate and we waited for their bus. Jai was going over notes for his English test which was scheduled for Thursday as Friday was a half day. Lyn and Noah were chatting about a game they wanted for Christmas. I listened to the radio quietly and just kinda half listened as Lyn asked Noah about his Mom. "She's excited about the ski trip, we FaceTimed last night, said she was gonna teach you and Jai how to snowboard!" Just then, we heard the bus approaching and the boy's clamored out. They all hugged me and ran to the bus. Lyn turned and smiled, "I love you Dad! See you later!" I told him I loved him too and he quickly jumped on the bus. I waited til they'd driven off to pull out and head towards my "job". I didn't consider it a job, but more of a passion. I was running the athletic department and that I was only a department of one was fine by me. The boys were a handful, but they'd really responded to how I ran things. As I pulled into the parking lot, the boys greeted me. Smiles and nods were normal and a select few required hugs, these were boys that lived on the church grounds, mostly Greek, mostly from broken homes. Luckily, most were thriving here thanks to Father Dimitri. I was just another of his vast array of tools to make sure these boys felt like they belonged. As I entered the faculty room, Father Dimitri called me over to his table where he was sipping his coffee. "Wes, how goes it this lovely morning!" I kinda laughed, " I'm feeling pretty good, even though I had granola and yogurt for breakfast, as my boys are pancakes and sausage!" Father Dimitri laughed, "Anna cracking her whip again!" We both laughed, "Have a seat Wes, I've got a project for you to discuss." "What's up Father? Father Dimitri sighed, "Gotta new boy last night, his Parents were killed in an automobile accident over in Hayward, he's pretty tore up and I don't wanna lose him, he's hurt, angry and scared. I think you might be the one to help him." I thought quickly, "I don't know Father, my plate is pretty full right now." Father Dimitri scoffed, "Nonsense, our plates are usually overflowing! I honestly thought about this before I asked, I think you would be good for him, he needs a male influence and I see how you are with our boys, and Anna says you are full of love for your boys, she says you will make the right decision once you've met Peter." The fact that He had mentioned Anna made me grimace, I'd never live it down if I didn't atleast meet with Peter. "Ok Father, I'll meet him first, if I feel I can be of use, I'll let you know after." Father Dimitri smiled, "Fair enough Wes, I'll take you to him , then I'll cover your first class!" We headed towards the infirmary as Dimitri felt the boy needed space away from a loud dormitory for now. As we approached the double doors Dimitri stopped me, "I must tell you that Peter has not talked at all since arriving, he has only really cried and slept. He's 8 years old, but looks like he's 5 or 6 really. Small, but the Doctor says he's healthy. The report from CPS says he was up until the accident, a lively young boy, his neighbors were fond of him." With that he opened the double doors and were met by a nurse. She pointed to the only occupied bed in the ward. A small jumble of blankets covered him. Father Dimitri cleared his throat, "Peter, I have someone I'd like you to meet, Wes is our Athletic director, but in reality he's a father of three boys who part times here, he'd like to meet you." No response from under the covers... Father Dimitri shrugged, " I'll leave you two alone, I'll handle your class for now Wes." He patted my shoulder and walked away. I looked down at the bed and sighed. I looked over and spotted a chair. I brought it over to the bedside and sat down. I pulled out my phone and pulled up a game me and Jai enjoyed, a war game called "Strike", I quietly began working on my base and troop strength, soon I was immersed in the game and didn't notice Peter staring at me. The game can be noisy on certain pages and the weapons factory page was loud. I was switching pages when I realized that there was a boy at my shoulder looking at my game. "You need to press "help" or your team can't help you finish the build." It kinda startled me, and I looked back. If I could describe Peter quickly, it would be Greek Prince, small, but very cute and proportioned. Brown hair, deep brown eyes, button nose and a Cupid bow mouth. I kinda stammered, "thanks, my son has to remind me about that all the time." I motioned him to come around and I put out my hand, "Hi Peter, I'm Wesley, but everyone calls me Wes." He was staring at my hand but never reached out to shake it. He just said, " is that a G Shock?" I realized he was referring to my watch, " Yes it is, got it a few years ago, best watch for me I guess." He grimaced and looked down, " My Dad has the same watch, he kinda whimpered as he realized his loss. He started shaking as the tears began to fall from his eyes. I felt my heart break for him. I didn't hesitate, I pulled him to me, he started to pull away, but gave into his need for comfort, he fell into my arms and I pulled him up into my lap and hugged him tightly, "It's okay Peter, cry all you want, I'm here, I'll be here for as long as you need me. He cried his heart out and I just held him and rubbed his back as he let his tears flow. He cried himself to sleep, but I still held him. I didn't want him to wake up alone. I rocked him and hummed a song I'd known from my Dad's day, "Cats and the Cradle", My Dad never allowed me to feel less than loved and reminded me that some Fathers let work get in the way of real life. I remind myself of that daily, my boys were more important than any paycheck. He woke slowly and when he realized I was still there and holding him, he pulled up and laid his head against my shoulder, his nose against my neck. He sniffled a bit then sighed. "Mr. Wesley? Can I ask you a question?" I continued to rub his back, "Yes, and please just call me Wes, all my friends do." Peter sat up and faced me, "Do you think my Mom and Dad are in heaven?" I looked at this beautiful soul and slowly shook my head in the affirmative, "Absolutely Peter, no doubt in my mind. God has taken one look at you and opened those gates for them both, you see, he recognized two good people when he saw who their son was." Peter teared up a little, "honest?" I pulled him in and hugged him. "I've never been so honest in my life Peter, your Parents are in heaven looking down at you, knowing you're a very good boy and will make them proud." Peter let out a deep sigh and I felt a great weight lifted off his soul. He hugged me back and we sat that way until the nurse brought him and I lunch. I told Peter I had to go to my class, but promised I'd be back after class was over. He got a little misty eyed, but agreed. I hugged him tightly and he surprised me by kissing my cheek. I kinda rushed out as I didn't want him to see my watery eyes, for fear he might feel he'd done something wrong. As I walked out, I could see Father Dimitri walking towards me. He stopped at the nurse's counter and grabbed some tissues. "Rough morning Wes?" I accepted the tissues and kinda half smiled. "Such a good boy, you know his main concern was being sure his Mom and Dad made it to heaven? Just about lost it right then and there!" Dimitri smiled, "So, as Anna predicted, you were successful, I knew it too, and am very grateful Wes." I shook my head, " he's far from cured, but we made some headway. I'm almost afraid to leave at the end of the day, what if he needs me?!?" Dimitri smiled, "Anna anticipated that as well, she said for you to bring him home for the week, that you have room and she'll feed him." I laughed, "She is such a conniver! Unfortunately, she knows me all too well." Dimitri kinda laughed, "Yes, she was that way while raising me too!" At the end of my last class, I practically ran to the infirmary. Dimitri was coming down the hall with a folder. "Wes! Slow down, Peter is fine, I just checked on him myself. I was trying to catch you, Here's the paperwork that allows you to take Peter home for the week, just leave him with Anna when you come to work ok?" I agreed and thanked him. He patted my shoulder and said, "No! Thank you Wes, I thank God and Anna for bringing you here, your definitely needed here!" He suddenly pulled me in and hugged me, "Thank you for helping Peter." With that he shooed me off and headed towards his office. When I walked into the infirmary, Peter looked up from his coloring book and practically jumped off the bed. "Wes!" With that, he leapt into my arms. "Father Dimitri says I'm gonna stay with you for the week!" I hugged him back, "Yes, you're gonna be hanging out with me and my boys, oh! And Anna, who is the best cook ever!" Peter pulled away a little and looked me in the eyes, " I hope they like me." I smiled, "Peter, have no fear, my boys are good boys, and I think, no! I know they're gonna like you!" He giggled which was heaven to my ears. After checking out in Administration, we headed out to the parking lot. The boys were in the yard and waved at me and said their "Cya's!" I placed Peter in the middle row and made sure he was buckled up and we headed towards Palo Alto. Anna sent me a text telling me she picked the boys up early to prepare them for Peter's arrival. I thanked her and advised her of our ETA, and that I had a bone to pick with her when we got home. Her response was an emoji ;p... Really?!?! We pulled up to the gate and I looked back and Peter was looking apprehensive. "Relax Peter, you're gonna be fine, just trust me ok buddy?" Peter looked at my face and replied, "I trust you are right." When we pulled up, the boys were waiting in the yard. I barely got out the driver's door when Jai was unbuckling Peter. "Hi Peter! I'm Jai, glad your staying over!" Peter looked at Jai and said, "You don't look like Wes." Jai laughed, "That's ok, I'm Korean by birth, Wes is my adopted Dad, he adopted me and my little Brother Lyn." He pointed over to Lyn who was jumping up and down and waving, " Hi Peter!!!" I couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm. Jai let Peter out and Noah was next, "Hi Peter! I'm Noah!" Peter again looked hard at Noah, then me, "You don't look like Wes either!" Noah smiled and said, "That's because he's my adopted Uncle and guardian, my Mom lives in Seattle, and I stay here til vacation. We're all kinda adopted really!" Peter kinda shrugged but shook Noah and Jai's hands. Lyn just barged in and hugged Peter, "Guess you know I'm Lyn! Glad you're here!" And out of the mouth of babes... Lyn cut thru the elephant in the yard, "I heard about your Mom and Dad, I'm sorry Peter, really." Peter patted Lyn's back, "Thanks Lyn, thanks for being cool about it." Lyn pulled Peter towards the door, "Oh! You gotta meet Anna! She's our homekeeper, but kinda like our Grandma, we kinda adopted her too!" We all headed to the kitchen, Anna was setting out afternoon snacks and turned when the door opened. Lyn ran to her and she pulled him in for his hug and a kiss. "Anna, this is my new friend Peter! He's staying here this week!" Lyn kinda shoved Peter towards Anna. Peter held his hand out as if to shake her hand... Pfffft! Anna grabbed his hand and pulled him into her warm embrace. Peter came in unarmed and undermanned, he kinda turned into play-doh in Anna's hug. "Oh Peter, I'm so glad you came with Wes! You needed to get some fresh air and away from that stuffy old Father Dimitri! Come! I've made snacks for you boys! " With that, Peter was one of the boys, and boys must be fed and mothered by Anna. Me? I got a fruit cup and a banana... (What am I? Chopped Liver?) Peter was reserved but added to the boy's conversation, I excused myself after reminding the boys about homework. They were pulling notebooks out of their backpacks when I headed towards my office. Anna was watching them while asking Peter a million questions about the foods he liked and disliked. I sent out a dozen emails, paid bills and checked snow reports in the Cascades. I called Hwang and we talked mainly about Peter. Hwang remarked that he could already see the writing on the wall. I scoffed but he just laughed, "If ever there was a lost soul, I'd send them your way Wes, you are a healer and a Father to all... No need to deny it, I have it on high authority on this!" I growled, " And who is this high authority Hwang?" Hwang never got the chance as Ami announced her presence, "It was me Wes, so just hush and accept it!" I heard them both giggling which irked me... " Gotta go! Love you all!" They replied in kind and we ended the call, them still giggling in Korea... Damn it! I jumped up! We were supposed to go into San Francisco for a clothes buying binge for the ski trip. I almost put it off but made a quick call to Father Dimitri who authorized my taking Peter out of State for the holidays, but that I had to have him at the Funeral home on Wednesday at 2pm for a memorial. I agreed and ended that call. I stood at the bottom of the stairs and yelled, "Boys! Get ready to go shopping and dinner in town! You got 15 minutes!" I heard a bunch of scrambling and someone fell, then laughter... I turned and Anna was standing there dressed in a smart dress and low heels, ready for war! She brought it to my attention that Peter had so few clothes here, I told her we'd remedy that while we got him ski clothes too. She raised her eyebrows in surprise but held her tongue... Strange? Yeah, I thought so too... Everyone piled into the Denali and we set off. Anna had a list of sizes, to include Peter's... (Hmmmm...). We headed to Macy's first, Peter needed clothes today. I took him off and Anna took the others to JC Penny's for Jackets and flannels. Peter held my hand tightly as we culled thru the mountains of jeans, shorts and shirts. I made him chose what he liked and I chose his social clothes. He tended towards muted colors, exact opposite of Lyn... We had a cart full and I stopped and grabbed socks and I let him choose underwear. He picked briefs, one pack of colors and one of whites. We got a changing room and I made him try the shirts, shorts and pants to be sure. I made him stay in the changing room while I went back for some swim trunks. I chose navy blue trunks. I returned and made him try those on too. Soon enough we were done. We checked out and headed to JC Penny's. Anna and the boys were sitting out on benches. I was perplexed, no large bags anywhere... "You guys waited on us?" Anna chuckled, "No, I got it done, Jai and Noah already took it out to the SUV..." I said, "Well, I'll run in with Peter and get his now." The boys started giggling... I looked at Anna, who had a smug look on her face... "Got his too huh?" Her demure smile answered that question... She did add, "Nothing bright, he doesn't like bright colors, but I got a beanie that you can see from a distance." She stopped for a second then said, "Shoes! He needs shoes!" The boys all groaned, to include Peter. She grabbed his hand and ran into Penny's. Twenty minutes later, she came out with three shoe boxes. Peter in tow. We hustled out to the Denali and headed towards my favorite pizza place, The Cheese Board Pizzeria! A favorite of locals for fresh pizza. I knew the boys would love it, a bit worried about Anna, but whatcha gonna do? Hungry boys outweigh me and Anna, well Anna only really... Lucky for Anna, the pizza today was a Veggie variety. I ordered 2 large and everyone had bottled water, no caffeine this late. We ate quickly as the boys had an early day tomorrow. We were back at the hacienda by 7:30! Lyn and Peter fell asleep on the ride home. Jai carried Peter in and I lugged Lyn in. Jai and Noah went out and brought in the bags and boxes for Anna to wash and deal with. Lyn and Peter woke up, so I sent them for baths and left Jai in charge of that. It was agreed that Peter would sleep with Lyn for the duration. Noah went to shower and get ready for bed. I grabbed a juice and was headed to my office to check my emails when Anna called for me. She handed me Peter's new pajamas, funny enough, they were already washed? Anna was oblivious to my questions and said she'd originally bought them for Lyn, but wrong size... Lucky for us, they'd fit Peter perfectly... Ever get that feeling you've been played? Yea, like a piano... I ran upstairs and handed the PJ's to Jai, who must've been in the know, cause he smirked... Jeez! Am I really that naïve? I run downstairs, check my emails and rented another cottage, I decided to move Helen, Noah and Anna to the cottage next door, only Anna didn't know yet... Ha Ha! I go upstairs to say my goodnights, First is Lyn who requires hugs and kisses. Peter watches and I can see this effects him so I jump to him and smother him in kisses until he and Lyn are giggling together. He surprises me by pulling me to him and hugging me tightly, "I love you Wes, thank you for the clothes and stuff." I'm really a softy, (anyone disagree?) I'm still hugging him to keep him from seeing my watery eyes, "You are welcome Petey, I'm happy you're here with us!" I kiss his cheek and quickly turn off the main light, "Goodnight boys, no noise ok? Love you!" They responded in unison, "Love you too!" Which caused them to giggle, as I walked away, I heard Lyn say, "We're like brothers already!" Remember earlier? Out of the mouths of babes... Jai is already in bed, study material strewn over the covers. "Hey Dad, gonna study a little ok?" I smile at him, "sure buddy, just remember you need some sleep ok?" He laughs, "yea, I know! Growing boy and all!" He gets a serious look on his face, "What are we gonna do about Peter? He's really a good kid, I feel bad for him and he and Lyn have become fast friends already!" I'm hesitant to extend my thoughts about that issue, "Let's see how the holidays go ok?" He thinks quickly, " see how he fits? Or if we're a fit for him. " I study his face and realize how smart he is, 13 going on 30... "By the way, his Parent's memorial is Wednesday, I'd like it if we all went to show him our support, you ok with that?" Jai never hesitated, "Absolutely, I mean he's kinda like my little brother already." I can see this thing with Peter is gonna weigh on me only... "Cool! Good night Son, I love you!" He smiles, "Love you more Dad!" I run downstairs to talk to Anna, she's still sorting through our cold weather stuff, "Hey Anna, I'd like it if you came with us to the mountains." Anna smiles, "I'd love to, the boys will need me!" I'm like, "Cool! Thanks Anna! I rented another cottage for you, Helen and Noah, ok?" Anna is straight faced when she replies, "I'm glad you asked, I was afraid these new winter clothes I bought would go to waste..." I kinda fumble my words... "Ha.. Ha.. How did you know I'd ask you to come?" She looks at me matter of factly, "I consider you and the boys my family, and can't imagine not seeing my loves for two whole weeks! I'm a bit perturbed that it took you so long though..." I was at a loss for words, but An a was already shooing me out of the laundry room... This woman is like a friggin psychic! I'm just shaking my head as I check the doors and set the alarm... I head upstairs and Noah is in bed already, I see his head nodding, so I go over and kiss his cheek and he mutters, "I tried to stay awake for you Uncle Wes, I got sleepy..." I kiss his cheek again, "Go to bed sweetie , I love you, I'm tired too... He sighs out "I love you too..." And drifts off... I go in to brush my teeth and I'm contemplating Peter and his future, what happens to him in a few weeks, what if Lyn gets attached? What if Peter gets attached? I'm staring at myself in the mirror and I begin to laugh, it's a joke! I'm like the only one not seeing it... Why am I so friggin slow to pick things up? Damn it... Anywhoo! I'm tired, bed calls and it's an early morning! Talk to you all soon! Hope you all enjoyed the new chapter!
