Chapter 17 – With a Little Bit of Luck.

Now that Dakota was prepared to make the video for his mom, I got out my phone to record him.  It appeared as if he was a man being led to his execution, so I knew this must be extremely difficult for him as he looked up and began to speak.

“Mom, it’s me, Kota, and I need to ask you a favor.  You know that I’m living with Eric now, cuz you gave him custody, but I want him to adopt me too.  I still love you, but I can’t live with your husband.  I hate him and he’s mean to me, so I’m begging you to sign the papers to let Eric adopt me.  I’m really happy here and he’s taking good care of me, and he has three other boys around my age and we all get along great.  I really love you, Mom, but I need you to do this for me.  Please, just sign the papers so Eric can adopt me.  I want him to be my dad.” 

He stopped speaking and I sensed he was finished, so I ended the recording.  I played it back for him so he could see if he was happy with it.  “Should I send this to Paul so he can show it to your mom, or do you want to try again?” 

“What do you think?” 

“I think it’s perfect, except I was surprised when you told your mom that you couldn’t live with her husband, rather than saying you couldn’t live with your stepdad.” 

“Yeah, I know.  It’s cuz I don’t think of him as my stepdad, cuz of the way he treats me.  I never felt like we was related.  He was just my mom’s husband, that’s all.”

“Ok, I will.”

That made him smile, and I stayed there for a couple more minutes before I left him alone in the bedroom.  I felt he had some issues he needed to work out on his own and I wanted to give him a chance to do it in private.  I went downstairs and forwarded the recording to Paul, along with a message asking him to show it to Dakota’s mom as a way of encouraging her to let me adopt him.  I also urged him to use whatever other leverage he had to entice her to sign off on this, because it was important to Dakota.  Now, I just had to wait and see how he made out. 

I made a couple more quick phone calls next and when those calls ended, I thought of something else and went to speak with Laine.  I pulled him aside so we could speak in private and then I handed him my phone. 

“I think you should call your parents.  I think they’d like to hear from you, now that they know you’re living here and you’re safe.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea, and thanks for lettin’ me use your phone.”

While he went to do that, I started fixing dinner, and he returned about twenty minutes later and handed me the phone.

“So how did it go?”

“I’m glad that worked out for you.”   

Later, while we were eating, the boys told me that they’d all worked with the educational software, and I thanked them for doing that.  Then, they wanted to know how long it would be before the adoptions were completed. 

“That depends on several things.  The lawyer has to get new birth certificates for each of you, and he also needs to notify the Social Security Administration about your name changes.  There are also a few other items he needs to clear up as well, and he has to work with the Family Court judge to set a date.” 

“What other stuff does he have to clear up?” Glen demanded. 

“He needs to get both of your parents and Dakota’s parents to sign off on adopting you.” 

“Didn’t they already do that?” 

“No, they merely gave me custody of you, but now they have to sign off on the adoption before it can proceed.”

“So how long do you think that’s gonna take?”

“To be honest, I have no idea.  It could happen in a few days, or it might take a few weeks.” 

“Damn, do you think it will happen before school starts?” Dakota followed. 

“Yes, we have plenty of time before that happens, so the lawyer should be able to get everything done before then.” 

“Can’t they do it faster for me, cuz my mom’s dead and I don’t have another dad?” Jamie asked next. 

“You have a dad, it’s just that no one knows who he is, but the lawyer wants to do all of this at the same time.  That way he only needs to set up one time with the court to take care of everything and we’ll only be required to make one trip into the city.” 

“Oh, ok.”

“Dad, will we be goin’ out on the four-wheelers tomorrow?” Glen asked next 

“Yes and we’ll do it right after breakfast.” 

“So should we put on those same clothes before we come down to eat?” Dakota followed. 

“You can, or you can just change after you finish eating.” 

“K.” 

“So what do you boys want to do after dinner?” 

“Let’s watch a movie,” Laine suggested. 

“Is everyone ok with that?” I asked, and they all agreed it would be fine.  “Then go check out the listings and let me know what you decide on.”

They headed to the family room to do that while I wiped down the kitchen.  A minute later they came out to ask me a question. 

“Hey Dad, do you mind if we watch It?” Laine wanted to know. 

“I don’t think it’s wise for you guys to be watching another scary movie just before bedtime.  We can record that and watch it during the day instead, so please choose something else.” 

“Yeah, Jamie had a nightmare afterward we watched Alien vs. Predator and then he had to sleep with Dad,” Dakota chimed in, much to Jamie’s dismay. 

“Just find something else,” I urged. 

They weren’t happy with my answer, but they went back to see what else was on.  They came back a couple of minutes later with a new suggestion.  “How about S.W.A.T. then?” Glen asked this time

“Yes, I suppose that will be all right, as long as the other boys want to see it too.” 

“Yeah, we do,” they all agreed. 

“Dad, are you gonna watch it with us?” Jamie asked next. 

“Yes, I’ll be right there.” 

When I got to the family room, Jamie and Dakota were sitting on the sofa, so I sat down between them, and then Laine came over to sit on the floor between my legs.  It was a couple more minutes before the movie started, and then we settled in to watch it.  During one of the more exciting scenes near the end of the movie, Jamie crawled onto my lap so I could hold him, which I was glad to do.  Overall, however, it was one of the most realistic cop films I’d ever seen and I totally enjoyed it.

We followed the same trail as before and took a right when it joined the trail between my property and the government land.  However, when we came to the stream we kept going instead of turning around, and I hoped the boys were paying attention as I led the way.  Once I got across the stream, I pulled over and looked back to see how they were doing, but I was also ready to race back to help them out if they got into trouble.  To my amazement, Dakota and Laine both made it across fairly easily, so I started out again with them following behind. 

We rode for over an hour, and occasionally I would stop to tell them about the area we were passing before we continued on.  When we reached the end of my property along that trail, I turned around in a big loop again, and the other two followed suit.  I then turned off the engine, and they did the same, and then we chatted briefly before they changed drivers. 

“Wow, you really own a lot of land,” Glen said, and I could tell he was truly impressed. 

“Yes, and this is only part of it.  I’ll show you the rest after I teach you how to handle the ATVs on the hilly and rugged terrain.” 

“I can’t wait,” Laine stated next.  “I hope I get to see all of it before I hafta go back home.” 

“You definitely will,” I confirmed. 

“Dad, do you ever go on the government land?” Jamie asked. 

“Yes, but only when I’m walking.  There’s definitely not enough room to ride a four-wheeler in there, at least not consistently unless you’re a very experienced driver.  It’s mostly left wild for hunters and nature lovers.” 

“So will you take us for a walk in there sometime so we can see what it’s like too?” Dakota followed. 

“Sure, if that’s what you boys want to do.” 

“Yeah, we want to see what it’s like too,” Laine concurred. 

When we finished this discussion, I let the other two boys drive this time and we started back.  Things were going fairly smoothly until we reached the stream, and after Glen and I crossed, Jamie had a slight problem.  He gave the ATV a little too much gas, so when he hit the opposite bank the hand that controlled the brake slipped off the handlebar.  Fortunately, Laine was able to react in time, and after he let go of Jamie’s chest with his left arm he reached out and grabbed the brake handle and was able to stop the ATV before anything bad occurred.  I quickly stopped my ATV and then we all went back to see how Jamie and Laine were doing.

“Ok, then let’s get going.”

When we reached the house we parked the ATVs in front of the garage, and then I had the boys put their goggles and gloves inside their helmets before placing them on the workbench.  While they were doing that, I was arranging the ATVs in the bays. 

“Thanks, Dad.  That was fun,” Dakota told me before going inside to change. 

“Yeah, thanks Dad.  That was awesome,” Laine added. 

“And thanks for not getting mad at me when I almost wrecked up back there, Dad,” Jamie stated.  He still appeared embarrassed that it had happened to him. 

“Anyone who has ever learned how to drive anything has dealt with situations similar to that.  It’s part of the learning process, so now you know how to keep it from happening again.” 

“I really want to thank you for doin’ this for us, Dad,” Glen stated next.  “Driving the four-wheelers is a fuckin’ blast.”

“I’m glad you all enjoyed it, so let’s go inside and I’ll fix lunch for all of us.” 

“Nah, we can make our own sandwiches today,” Laine quickly replied.  “You’ve done enough and we’ll take care of ourselves.” 

“Yeah, and we’ll fix a samich for you too,” Jamie offered.  “Just tell me what kind you want.” 

“What are you going to have with it?” I asked. 

“How about apple sauce and cookies,” Glen quickly answered.  “You bought that stuff when you went shoppin’, so we can have those with it.” 

“Ok, I can live with that,” I agreed, and then I told Jamie what kind of sandwich I wanted.   

“Ok, Dad, go sit down at the table and me and Jamie will bring your lunch out to you,” Dakota practically commanded. 

“Ok, and thanks for doing this.” 

“This is nothin’ cuz we all owe you,” Jamie responded. 

I was impressed that they’d offered to do this so I was ready to take full advantage of it.  I sat down at the table, and when they brought out my lunch, we all ate together.

After we finished our meal, the boys rinsed off the dishes and put them in the dishwasher, so I didn’t have anything to do.  I merely sat at the table and sipped the rest of my drink, and then they went upstairs to get on the computers.

When the second load finished, I opted to do a toad of towels next, and by the time those were done, it was time to fix dinner.  When that was ready, I called the boys down to eat, and after we were all sitting at the table I asked a question. 

“What would you like to do this evening?” 

“Watcha got to do besides watchin’ TV?” Glen asked with a mouthful of food. 

I had to think about that for a minute before I answered.  “I’ve got an UNO deck that I’ve used when I had friends over before, so would you like to do that?” 

“Yeah, it’s somethin’ different, so let’s do that,” Laine confirmed. 

“Would you all like to play UNO?” I asked, just to be sure.

They all responded positively, so after we finished eating I went to get the cards out of the drawers in the kitchen where I kept them, while the boys rinsed off the dishes.  After setting the deck on the counter, I helped them load the dishwasher first, and then I wiped off the table so we could sit down to play.  I have to admit that the older three were more cutthroat than either Jamie or me, so we had to change our approach or be destroyed.  The game soon evolved into a contest and dumping on the person on either side of you before they could dump on you, and when the dust settled Laine emerged the victor. 

“Do you want to play again, or was that enough?” I asked before they left the table.

This time Jamie and I were ready for the other three, and even though we weren’t sitting nest to one another, we teamed up to destroy the person sitting between us.  This time we had a new winner and it was Jamie. 

“I don’t know how you did that, but I don’t think you was playin’ fair,” Glen told Jamie when the game ended. 

“You’ve got a lot of nerve saying something like that,” I countered, “since you, Laine, and Dakota piled on him in the first game.” 

“Hey, we was just playin’ to win,” he replied. 

“And so was Jamie, and that’s how he won.” 

This time we decided to call it a night, so I put the UNO deck back in the drawer before we headed upstairs to shower.  Dakota followed me into the master bathroom, while Glen and Laine used one of the other bathrooms.  Before long, Jamie came in with Dakota and me, and he had a forlorn look on his face. 

“What’s the matter?” I asked.

“Laine and Glen are showerin’ together again, so can I shower with you guys?”

“Sure, get undressed and then come join us,” I replied. 

“And can I sleep with you too?”

I glanced at Dakota to gauge his reaction first, and he looked as if he’d just bitten into a lemon.  Since I didn’t answer right away, Jamie kept asking, “Can I?  Can I?”, so Dakota relented. 

“Yeah, we can all sleep together too,” he agreed.
