Chapter 21 – The Grand Tour.

After we had breakfast, I decided to work with the boys and have them take turns driving across the yard and the field this time, rather than going up and down the slope.  I had them start out on the driveway, in an area between the house and the pond to get them ready for our next outing.  Even though I’d filled in most of the rough spots in the yard with dirt that I’d dug out when diverting a portion of the stream so it would run down to the pond, the yard wasn’t flat and sloped sharply in places toward the pond.  I felt the boys needed this type of experience if I was going to take them around my entire property like I’d done with Dakota, so this was their next test.

“Yeah,” Laine piped up.  “We’re just goin’ around the edge of your land and there’s a lot more that we won’t get to see.  Will we be able to drive around some of that another time?” 

“Yes, we can do that too, but it’s mostly overgrown fields with some groves of trees and old tree lines that once divided the property into the small farms that used to be here.  I bought a few of them so I’d be able to keep other people from moving too close to me.” 

“Dang, you seem like you’re really friendly, so why don’t you want any neighbors?” Glen asked. 

“I moved out here for the peace and quiet, so I didn’t want any noisy neighbors.” 

“So do you own the land on the other side of the road too?” Laine followed. 

“No, and the land on that side of the road isn’t very good for anyone who wants to build a house on it.  You might have noticed that the land on the other side of the road slopes down even farther and the land at the bottom is pretty marshy.  That’s because the stream on my property runs under the road at one point and then continues to flow into the valley.  The drainage ditch that runs beside the road is also diverted under the road and empties on the other side as well, and all of that water ends up in the valley.  Because it’s so wet, the area is only good as a wildlife preserve and I don’t have to worry about anyone moving there.” 

“Did you plan that out?” Dakota asked. 

“Let’s just say I did my homework before buying any of the properties.  I had the government land on one side, and the marshy area on the other side of the road, and I bought up enough land to cover the other two areas to achieve my goal.” 

“Damn, it must have cost you a fortune to buy all of this land,” Laine observed. 

“It wasn’t cheap, but that’s what mortgages are for.  You get to pay for it over time.” 

That wasn’t exactly true, but it satisfied him and the others.  Shortly after we finished our discussion, we changed drivers and started out again, and we kept going until we’d nearly reached the road.  When we got there, we took another break so we could fill our bellies.  The boys wolfed down the sandwiches I’d made, along with the potato chips, Cheetos, and pretzels that I’d packed, and they each polished off another drink.  When we finished, we packed the trash into the cooler and I strapped it back onto my four-wheeler, and I told the boys what was going to happen next. 

“Since this is a country road, there isn’t a great deal of traffic on it so we’re going to ride over it next.  Remain in a single file and keep the same spacing, and don’t panic if a car approaches and attempts to pass by.  I also don’t want you to get overly concerned when we drive past the driveway leading up to the house either.  We’ll eventually turn onto the trail between my property and the government land, and that’s the same trail we walked over previously.  We’ll follow it back until we reach the trail that leads back to the house and that will complete our little journey around my property.  Any questions?” 

There were none, so we got back on the ATVs and took off again.  The boys did exactly as I asked, so the two cars we encountered were able to pass by without incident.  They also happened to be traveling in opposite directions, so I wasn’t sure if the boys had even seen the car that approached from behind until it was beside them, but they handled the situation well.  I’ll make sure to commend them for it when we get back, and the other car was also easy for them to deal with, since they could see it as it approached. 

No one attempted to turn into the driveway when we passed by, and we kept going until we reached the point where the trail running between my property and the government land met the road.  I turned onto it, with the boys following, and then we continued on until we reached the trail that led back to the house.

When we finally reached the end of our journey, we pulled up in front of the garage, shut down the engines, and got off the four-wheelers.  We then took off our helmets and goggles and I looked at each of the boys’ faces.  They were filthy and their clothes were covered in pollen and vegetation again.  They’d been riding in the dust of the vehicle in front of them on the trail, while I’d been the lead dog, but we were all covered in weeds and other items since we’d all driven across the fields. 

“You did a great job, especially when we were traveling on the road, but now I want you to take your clothes off and shake them off before you enter the house.  I also think you boys need to shower after you go inside, because except for the area around your eyes where the goggles were, your faces are pretty dirty.” 

“Yeah, we kinda figured that,” Laine replied.  “I think we all had to keep wiping our goggles off with our gloves or sleeves cuz it was getting’ hard to see.”

“Yes, I learned that too,” Dakota added. 

“I asked Laine to do that for me, cuz I didn’t want to let go of the handlebars,” Jamie offered. 

“That was actually pretty smart of you and I’m glad Laine was willing to help out,” I responded. 

“Yeah, I just had to take one arm off his chest to do it, but I only wiped one side at a time.  I didn’t want to cause him to have an accident cuz he couldn’t see.”  

“That was very smart of you as well.  I’m glad to see you boys have good heads on your shoulders, because it gives me more confidence about letting you drive the ATVs.” 

“And we’ve got pretty good heads in our pants too,” Glen stated, causing the other boys to laugh. 

“Yes, you certainly do,” I agreed. 

“Can we just wash our faces when we go inside?” Jamie asked next. 

“I’m sure you were sweating during the ride too, because it’s hot out and I know I was certainly perspiring, and since I don’t want to smell you later I’d suggest you take your shower now, instead of later.” 

“Yeah, ok.  We can do that.” 

“Then I’m showerin’ with Dad,” Dakota announced. 

“I want to shower with Dad too,” Jamie followed. 

“I suppose you both can,” I replied. 

“Then let’s get goin’,” Dakota urged. 

 “Make sure you strip off before you go inside and then leave your clothes in the laundry room, because I don’t need you tracking dirt and other debris all through the house,” I announced. 

They didn’t have a problem doing that, but I was surprised when they took off their underwear as well.  I was only referring to their outer garments, but I suppose they did it because they’d been sweating and were going to put on clean underwear after they showered. I didn’t mind, though, because it was kind of fun walking up the stairs behind them and watching their cute butts wiggle as they climbed the staircase.

“And I was reading The Bridge to Tarabithia,” Glen followed.  “It’s a little different than the movie, cuz I saw that too.”

“Yes, it is, so which do you like better?” 

“The book, cuz it tells some stuff that was left outta the movie.” 

“Yes, that it does and that’s usually the case when you read the book and compare it to the movie,” I agreed.

“It’s ok, Jamie, cuz I had a bad dream that night too,” Glen confessed. 

His admission seemed to make Jamie feel a little better and lessened his anger with Dakota.  I was glad to see that, so we went to the family room to see what movies were currently playing on the various channels.  We ended up watching the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Once again, Dakota and Glen sat on either side of me, while Jamie sat on my lap and Laine sat on the floor between my legs.  I’m not sure why this was so important to Laine, but I was glad he wasn’t being left out.

“Ok, then come in and join us,” I told Jamie. 

He followed me to the bed, and after Dakota moved over to give us room, I got in the middle and Jamie crawled in behind me.  After arranging the pillows, I pulled the sheet over us and both boys placed their heads on my chest as I wrapped an arm around each one.  I had my two loving human teddy bears and together we drifted off into a very restful slumber.
