Chapter 25 – Another Trip to the City.

The next morning, I got the boys up early, fed them, and then sent them upstairs to get dressed.  Once we were all ready, we went out and loaded into the SUV so we could head into the city.  As I started the long drive, the boys were all talking to Jamie and trying to build his confidence concerning what he was about to do. 

“The DNA test is gonna be easy, cuz I’ve seen it done on TV in those cop shows before,” Glen stated first.  “They do it on there all the time to see if the guy’s DNA matches the evidence.”

“And I have a feeling this guy isn’t gonna be your dad, so Dad will be able to adopt you,” Dakota added. 

“You’ll have a dad either way,” Laine followed, “and if that guy is your dad, then you’ll just end up like me, cuz I’m gonna have two dads from now on.  I know Dad is gonna keep in touch with both of us even if we’re not here, wontcha Dad?”

“Of course I will, and I’ll try to spend time with you too, like having you come back here for a visit next summer.  And if this guy won’t let you spend time with me, then we’ll find other ways to keep in touch.” 

“I just wish somebody else could take this test for me, cuz that way I’d know I could stay with you,” Jamie responded. 

“I know, but if this guy is your dad then you might find out you like him too.” 

“Not as much as I like you, and I’m sure he won’t suck my cock and make me feel as good as you do.” 

“Maybe not, but he might do other things you’ll like.” 

“Yeah, maybe, but I don’t know that for sure,” Jamie relented. 

“No, but you may eventually discover there are things he does that you like, if it turns out he is your dad.”

After trying to put a positive spin on this, I turned the conversation to what they were planning on doing when we returned home later, as well as what they wanted to do the next day.  I let the boys talk about those things amongst themselves while I focused my attention on driving, and when we got closer to the city limits I handed Dakota my cell phone. 

“Why are you givin’ me this?”

“I want you to call Paul and let him know that we’re approaching the city limits so he’ll have an idea about how soon we’ll be there.” 

“Oh, ok.  I can do that.” 

After I heard him chatting with Paul, I glanced into the rearview mirror to see how Jamie was doing.  He appeared to be holding up fairly well, and part of the reason for that might have had something to do with the fact that Laine had an arm draped around Jamie’s shoulders.  He appeared to be playing the role of a big brother whose younger brother needed some emotional support, and it was heart warming to witness this interaction.

A few minutes later I was pulling the SUV to a stop along the curb, just a stone’s throw away from the police station.  Once I’d turned off the engine, I asked the boys to lower their windows a bit so they’d have some fresh air while Jamie and I went in to see Paul.  It was still fairly early and it wasn’t very hot out yet, so I knew they’d be fine because we wouldn’t be gone for very long. 

When I opened the door to enter the police station, I immediately spotted Paul chatting with another officer.  When he became aware that we were there, he told the other officer he’d get back to him later and walked over to greet us. 

“So this must be the young man I’m supposed to test,” he stated as he looked down at Jamie. 

“Yes, it is.  Paul this is Jamie, and Jamie this is my best friend, Paul.” 

“It’s nice to meet you, Jamie,” Paul said as he offered his hand.

“I’m glad to meet you too, cuz Dad says you helped Kota come live with him and then Kota talked Dad into lettin’ us live with him too.” 

“I’m glad I was able to do that for all of you, and now I’m supposed to take a DNA sample from you.  Even though I have to do this, I hope it doesn’t match the other guy’s DNA, if that’s what you want.” 

“Yeah, it is cuz I wanna stay with Dad.” 

“I had a feeling that’s what you were going to say, so come with me.” 

We followed Paul to a small room, and when we got there Paul took out a small sealed envelope and ripped it open.  He then withdrew a plastic tube, flipped open the lid, and removed a long handled cotton swab that was contained within.  Once he was holding it in his hand, he asked Jamie to open his mouth, and as soon as he complied, Paul rubbed the cotton swab around the inside of Jamie’s cheek.  He then placed the swab into the plastic tube again and sealed it. 

“That’s all there is to it, and now I’ll send it off to be tested.” 

“How long before you know if he’s my dad?”

“It will take a few days and then someone will call Eric to let him know the results.” 

“K and thank you for bein’ so nice.” 

“You’re welcome, Jamie, and I hope this works out the way you want.” 

“Paul, you’re planning to join us for a while, aren’t you?”

“Yes, but am I supposed to ride with you or do you want me to meet you somewhere?  I switched my shift so this is my day off, and I can do it either way.”

“We can all ride together.” 

“Ok, then I want to drive my car home and leave it there, so will you drive over to pick me up?” 

“Sure, I can do that, and I hope you’ve thought of something we can do with the boys.” 

“Yes, I have.  I asked some of the guys that have kids about this and they’ve told me about a new kart track that opened at the beginning of the summer.  They said their kids loved it when they took them there, so I thought your boys would like it too.” 

“Yes, I’m sure they will, seeing they already like driving the four-wheelers.”

“Then I suggest we go there.” 

“And after we finish up there I’m going to take everyone out for lunch, including you.  I’ll drop you off at the house after we finish eating.”

“Ok, sounds like a plan, so I’ll see you at the house in a few minutes.” 

Jamie and I then left the station and walked back to the SUV to join the other boys. 

“How did it go?” Glen asked as soon as we were inside. 

“It was kinda like you said, but I prolly won’t know nothin’ for a while cuz that’s what Paul told me.” 

“Dad, how long do you think it’s gonna take before he’ll know the results?” Laine followed. 

“Like he said, it will take a few days because they have to send Jamie’s sample away to be analyzed first, and then they’ll compare it to the samples taken from his mom and this other guy.  Once that’s been done, someone will let us know if he’s Jamie’s father.” 

“So will they send you a letter or call you?” Dakota asked. 

“I believe they’ll probably contact my lawyer first and then he’ll call me.” 

“Damn, why is everything so complicated?” Dakota spat back. 

“It’s not complicated, but there is a process that needs to be followed.   We’re muggles, not wizards, so things like this take time.” 

“Oh, ok, but I feel bad that Jamie has to wait to find out if this guy is his dad.” 

“So what are we going to do now?” Glen asked.

“We’re going to drive over to Paul’s house to pick him up, because he wanted to take his car home before he joined us, and then he has an idea about what we can do.” 

“Yeah, I heard him tell Dad ‘bout a kart track,” Jamie added. 

“Do you mean go-karts?” Laine asked Jamie. 

“I guess so, but I’m not sure cuz I don’t know what they are.” 

“They’re like small cars you drive around a track,” Laine clarified.

“Is that what Paul was talkin’ ‘bout, Dad?” Jamie followed. 

“Yes, it is,” I confirmed.

“Ohhh, that’s sound like fun,” Jamie quickly agreed. 

“I’m sure you’ll all enjoy it, so let’s go over to Paul’s house.”  

When we got there I asked Dakota to move back with the other boys so Paul could sit in front with me.  He wasn’t happy about having to do this, but he eventually complied, and then Paul hopped into the seat beside me a few seconds later. 

“Let me introduce you to the other boys,” I told Paul after he’d buckled in.

I then introduced him to Laine and Glen and they chatted briefly after saying hello to each other.  During that time, Paul asked them a little bit about themselves, and then the boys thanked Paul for indirectly bringing us all together.  Once they finished their discussion, I attempted to get down to business.

“Ok, so where is this place?”

After Paul told me, I drove there and we all went inside to check it out.  We entered the far right side of the building where the visitors paid to drive the karts, but most of the structure was used to either store or repair the karts when they weren’t in use.  I walked up to the counter to speak with the man working there. 

“Good day,” he said when I reached the counter.  “How many of you are planning to do this?”

After I told him, he spoke again.  “It appears that everyone is tall enough, so have they ever driven a kart before?”   

“No, but they’ve all driven ATVs.  We go out on them all the time at home.” 

“Ok, but we’ll still have to give them a quick briefing about how to operate the karts before they go out on the track.” 

“That’s fine.  Are the fees for a certain number of laps around the track or for a specific length of time?” 

“The fee is for ten minutes on the track and you can drive around as many times as you can during that time.” 

“Then I’ll pay for thirty minutes for each of us, so what do I owe you?” 

After I’d taken care of the fee, we followed another guy to the other side of the building where the carts were stored.  Once there, he gave the boys a brief lesson on how to operate the karts, and then he asked if there were any questions.  After he answered the queries, he gave a brief safety instruction next, and once those things had been taken care of, we were each given a helmet to wear before we chose the kart we wanted to drive.  The karts looked more like something you’d see in a Formula 1 race, although much smaller, rather than what I used to drive when I did this as a kid back in the 1990s. 

When we were ready, I realized I hadn’t seen anyone else out on the track, so I decided to ask him about it.  “Are we the first ones here?”

“Yes, it’s still early and we usually just use this time to get ready for the day by repairing problems with the karts, as well as cleaning them.  It doesn’t usually get busy around here until the afternoon, and our busiest times are after 5:00 and on the weekends.” 

Now that we were all ready to go, I called the boys together before we went out to do this.  “I’m going to ask you to follow me around the track the first time to help you become familiar with both the karts and the track.” 

I was doing this because it wasn’t merely an oval track, like you’d see in a NASCAR race.  This track had multiple turns, some to the right and others to the left, and the boys would have to slow down for most of them or they’d probably crash into the barriers.  There were also a couple of banked curves they could speed around and I wanted them to become familiar with each of these features before I left them on their own. 

“Once we’ve gone completely around the track and know what its like, I’ll allow you to go on your own and you won’t have to follow me any longer.” 

“Can we race?” Dakota asked. 

“You may, but I suggest only two of you do it at a time.  If you want to race after we’ve driven once around the track, we’ll all stop and then two of you can pair up to race.  I want the next group to wait until after the pair ahead of them has made the first turn before they start, so you won’t interfere with each other.  Why don’t you go ahead and decide who is going to race whom.” 

“So how many more times are we gonna be able to do this?” Glen wanted to know before they decided whom they were going to race. 

“I’ve paid for us to be here for thirty minutes, so you’ll be able to do it multiple times before we leave.” 

“Then I want to race you first,” Dakota quickly announced. 

“And I want to race Paul,” Laine followed. 

“And that means Jamie and Glen can race if they want to.  After that you can challenge someone else.” 

Glen and Jamie agreed to race each other as well, so we told them they could go first after we made our dry run, then Laine and Paul would go next, while Dakota and I would go last.  We all agreed to meet up again after we finished those races to decide who would race whom next.

Paul made sure he gave Glen and Jamie a good head start before he and Laine took off, because Paul felt they might be driving faster than the other pair.  Dakota and I did the same thing, and I was surprised when Dakota cut me off on the first turn.  He still had a slight lead when we came to the first banked turn and that’s when I sped up and blew past him.  He kept up with me the rest of the way, but I edged him out by a kart length when our race ended. 

“I did pretty good seeing you’re used to drivin’,” Dakota said when we finished. 

It wasn’t exactly what I expected to hear from him.  I figured he would complain that I cheated or that I’d only beat him because I had more experience, so I thought I’d respond in kind. 

“Yes, you did much better than I anticipated.  I was very impressed.”

“Thanks,” he responded with a grin.

Jamie wanted to go against me next, so Glen raced Paul while Laine and Dakota faced off.  I took it a little easier on Jamie, although I tried not to make it appear too obvious, and he was all smiles when we finished. 

“I thought you were gonna beat me by a lot more than you did,” he said after the race ended. 

“You did really well.  Both you and Dakota surprised me.” 

“It’s prolly cuz you taught us how to ride the four-wheelers, so we aren’t afraid to go fast.” 

“You might be right about that,” I agreed. 

I ended up racing Glen and Laine too, and before we finished Paul and I faced off against each other.  We were the very last pairing, so the boys watched and cheered us on as we went head-to-head.  I soon discovered I was at a disadvantage this time, seeing Paul had gone through training at the police academy and learned some of the techniques used in high speed chases.  He beat me rather easily, so the boys tried to make me feel better when our race ended. 

“That’s ok, Dad.  You did really good,” Jamie told me. 

“Yeah, we thought you were gonna beat him,” Dakota added.

“I think you would’ve, but he got off to a fast start,” Glen followed. 

“Yeah, he’s really good, cuz he beat all of us too,” Laine concluded. 

“I’m not upset and don’t have a problem with Paul beating me, but that only goes for this.  I kick his butt at everything else,” I replied. 

“Oh, so now I’m going to have to prove you’re a liar in front of your sons,” Paul shot back, “just not today.”

We’d all had a good time doing this, but now it was time to load into the SUV so I could take them to a nice restaurant for lunch.  I forgot that since we were in the city that we’d be competing with the various employees from the local businesses on their lunch hour, so we had to wait a while before we were seated.  After we ordered, the boys chatted about our time at the kart track. 

“That was a blast.  I hope we can do it again sometime,” Glen stated. 

“Yeah, me too,” Dakota concurred. 

“I’m just glad that I got to do this before I have to go back home,” Laine added. 

“And I almost beat Dad,” Jamie announced proudly.

“Didn’t everybody?” Paul teased.  “You boys were a lot better at doing it than I thought you’d be.”  

“Yes, they surprised me as well,” I concurred. 

“We only did good cuz Dad lets us drive the four-wheelers at home,” Jamie offered. 

“Yeah, I think doin’ that gave us a lot more confidence about drivin’ the karts,” Glen agreed. 

“I’m not sure what caused you boys to do so well, but I think each of you could give my officers a run for their money on the karts,” Paul added.  His comment caused all of the boys to beam. 

“Thanks for sayin’ that,” Dakota replied. 

The boys stopped talking after our meals were delivered and Paul and I had only managed to put away a little more than half of our lunch by the time they had finished.  Paul just looked over at me and shook his head as the boys began to chat with each other again. 

“Do they always eat this fast?” he asked amazed.

“I’m not sure, but I think they were going a little slower than usual today,” I quipped. 

“Damn, then I hope you know the Heimlich maneuver, because there will come a day when one of them is going to choke from eating so quickly.  Do they even chew?” 

“I believe they merely inhale their food, and I’m definitely up to date on my first aid skills.”

After Paul and I finished eating, I drove him home and we all thanked him for going with us. 

“Thanks for helping Jamie with the DNA test and for telling me about the kart track,” I said before he got out.  “We all had a great time and I’m glad you were able to join us.”

“Yeah, thanks,” the various boys added. 

“You’re welcome, and I hope I get to spend more time with all of you in the very near future,” Paul responded as he got out of the SUV.  He also waved at us before he went inside.  

“Are we going home now, Dad?” Dakota asked as he moved up to the front seat again. 

“No, I’ve got some other errands I want to run first.” 

“Like what?” 

“You’ll see,” I responded, knowing it would drive him nuts. 

“Why can’t you ever just answer my question?” he whined. 

“It’s because I don’t want to ruin the surprise.” 

I drove to the mall, and when I pulled into the parking lot the boys all started asking what we were doing there. 

“You’ll see, so just follow me.” 

I took them to Barnes and Nobles first, and before we entered I decided to explain why I’d brought them to this location.  “Since you boys all seem to enjoy reading the books I bought you already, I’m going to let each of you pick out three more books that you want to read.” 

I then took them inside and allowed them to look around on their own, and after the others took off to check out the selection, Jamie asked me a question. 

“Will you help me pick out my books?”

“Sure, if you want.  What kinds of books might you interested in?” 

“Ummm, I like stories about animals and stuff that’s exciting.” 

“I see, so why don’t you follow me and we’ll see what we can find.” 

As we were looking around, I found a book I thought he might like and handed him a copy of The Yearling.  “This is about a boy and his pet deer.  I think you’ll enjoy it.” 

“K, it sounds good.”

A short time later I found another book and handed it to him as well.  “My Friend Flicka is about a boy and his horse, so do you think you might want to read it?”

“Yeah, that sounds good too, so let me get it.” 

Before I found him another book, Glen and Laine came over to speak with me. 

“Can we get these?” Laine asked as he and Glen each held up a package containing a book series.  Laine had the Lord of the Rings trilogy, while Glen was holding The Hunger Games series.

“Yes, of course.  They each have three books, so why wouldn’t I let you get them?” 

“Oh, so these count as all three?” Glen countered. 

“Yes, they have three books each, so does that mean you don’t want to get them now?” 

“No, but I wanted to get The Hobbit too?” Laine explained. 

“And I saw another book I wanted to get?” Glen added. 

“Which one?”

“The Catcher in the Rye.” 

“I’ll tell you what, I was going to pick up a few more books for the house so I’ll get those two and then you can read them as well.  Go get a copy of each one and bring it back to me.” 

“Thanks, Dad,” they both replied before running off. 

I went back to looking for another book for Jamie when I spotted the perfect choice.  I picked it up and handed it to him.  “The Call of the Wild is about a dog, so now you have three books about animals – a deer, a horse, and a dog.” 

“Thanks, Dad.  They all sound great.” 

Dakota came over while I was helping Jamie, but he waited until we finished chatting before he spoke. 

“What do you think of these books, Dad?”  He then showed me he had To Kill a Mockingbird, White Fang, and Treasure Island.  

“They look like great choices.  Was there any specific reason you chose those books?” 

“Yeah, I heard about the first two books at school last year, cuz a couple of the other kids did book reports on them.  We had to read a book and then tell the whole class about it, and I remembered they sounded interesting.  I thought Treasure Island would be interesting too, cuz I like pirates.”

“I’m sure you’ll like each of them.”  

Besides having the copies of The Hobbit and Catcher in the Rye, I stopped to pick up a few other items before leaving.  The first was The Chronicles of Narnia series, and then I grabbed a copy of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Watership Down for anyone to read them, and then I led the boys to the checkouts. 

“I’m going to have each of the boys put his books on the counter so you can ring them up,” I explained to the cashier, “but I want you to bag them separately.  That way they can each carry their own books and then I’ll pay for everything.” 

She didn’t have a problem doing this and gave each boy his bag after she rang up his selections, and then I gave her the books I had too.  As soon as she’d rung it all up, I paid the bill with my Debit card.  As we were walking out of the store, Laine spoke to me. 

“Thanks for doing this for us, Dad, and I’ll carry your bag for you.”

“Ok, if you want to, because we have a couple more stops to make.” 

“Where are we going now?” Dakota immediately asked. 

“You’ll see,” was my answer. 

“Damn, you keep doin’ that to me.” 

“Then be smart and stop asking,” I snarkily replied.

I then took them back to the same clothing store where I’d purchased all of their other clothes.  When we arrived, the boys looked at me funny. 

“What are we doin’ here?” Glen asked. 

“We’ve been doing a lot of riding on the ATVs lately, and both you and your clothes are usually filthy afterward, so I want each of you to buy two more pairs of Dockers and two more long sleeve tee-shirts.  That way I won’t have to rush to wash them before we go out again, because I think you’re all about ready to go out without me once in a while.” 

“Really?  We can ride anytime we want?” Dakota followed. 

“Just check with me first, and if I say ‘yes’ then you can go without me, but I never want you to ride alone.  You must always have a buddy on the other four-wheeler so if there’s a problem there will be someone to help out or who can go for help.” 

“Yeah, we can do that,” they all agreed. 

After they picked out exactly what they wanted and I’d checked the sizes to make sure they hadn’t made a mistake, I had them try them on before we headed to the checkouts.  Once we finished up there, they were following me to the next store when I spotted something else they could use. 

“Let’s go in here and you can each pick out a pair of flip-flops.  They’ll come in handy around the house and when you‘re walking down to the pond.” 

They all agreed, so after I paid for those items, I led them to our final stop so I could purchase a dozen more towels. 

“Don’t you already have a lot of towels?” Jamie asked.

“I had a sufficient quantity for when it was just me, or even for me and Dakota,” I replied.  “But now with all of you boys using them we’re going through the towels very quickly so I thought I should buy a few more.  I’ll buy these in the same color and then I’ll keep them in my bathroom.  I’ll split up the other towels and place them in the remaining two bathrooms so you’ll have plenty to use as well.” 

They seemed fine with my answer, so once I paid for those items we carried all of the bags out to the SUV and loaded them into the back.  Now that we had everything, I just had to make another quick stop before we went home.  This time I stopped at a gas station to fill up my diesel container again.  I’d left it in the garage after I’d used it to fill the tractor the last time I mowed, and then I put it in the back of the SUV before we left.  I filled it quickly and stuck it back in the SUV, and that completed the last item I had on my list and we headed home.
