Chapter 27 – The Final Hurdle. 

“The DNA results are back?  What’s the verdict?” I basically screamed into the phone in my excitement. 

“It wasn’t a match with the potential father, so you’re still able to adopt James Palmer as well.”

“That’s fantastic!  Thank you very much for giving me this incredible news.” 

“I’m glad it worked out the way you wanted.” 

As soon as we ended the call, I ran upstairs to tell the boys.  They had just gone up to change so we could go out on the four-wheelers, but I stopped what they were doing.

“I want you boys to come here quickly, because there’s something I’d like to tell you,” I yelled, and a couple of seconds later they were all walking out into the hallway to join me.  “I just got off the phone with my lawyer and he informed me the DNA results are back.  It wasn’t a match and the guy isn’t Jamie’s dad, so I can adopt Jamie as well.” 

The boys all started cheering and dancing around, and then Jamie ran toward me, leapt into the air, and wrapped his arms around my neck and his legs wrapped around my waist.  Luckily, I was prepared for something like this to happen, so not only didn’t he knock me backward, but I was able to catch him as well.  

“You’re gonna be my dad now and I don’t have to leave,” he said as he energetically squeezed my neck and insides.  When he pulled back so I could see his face, I noticed there were tears streaming down his cheeks.

“See, I told you not to worry.  We’re going to become a real family in just a few more days.” 

The boys no longer wanted to go out on the ATVs and chose to celebrate instead.  After they went back to their rooms to change into their shorts again, we went downstairs and I immediately took the ice cream out of the freezer and scooped out a bowl for each of us.  As I was doing this, the boys went to grab a can of soda out of the fridge and then we sat down at the table to enjoy our treat.  It was a treat too, because I put chocolate syrup and sprinkles on the ice cream and the soda was a treat as well, because I didn’t let them drink soda on a daily basis.  I felt it was bad for their teeth and overall health, so most of the time they drank water, milk, juice, lemonade, ice tea, or Kool-Aid, and I always made the last three items using Splenda, not sugar.  

“Damn, I’m really glad for you Jamie,” Laine began, “but now I’m sorry that I won’t be part of this family too.” 

“You’ll always be part of our family, even if you don’t live here full time,” I responded.  “You’ll always be their brother and my son, and I’ll always be your other dad.”

“Yeah, I know that, but it’s not the same.  I just hope my parents will let me come back here next summer.” 

“Yeah, we hope they do too,” Dakota confirmed. 

“Dad, do you think maybe I could bring my brother with me if I came back here next summer?  I know he’d enjoy hanging out with the rest of you too.” 

“I don’t see why not.  How old is he?” 

“He’s eleven.” 

“Then he’s old enough, but I’m wondering how he’s going to react to some of the things you boys do.” 

“Like what?” Laine asked, since he failed to notice the elephant in the room. 

“Like the sex, the nudity, and you boys showering with me.” 

“I don’t think us bein’ naked or showerin’ with you will bother Caleb at all.  We hafta share a bedroom at home, cuz we live in a two-family house and our side only has two bedrooms, so we’ve seen each other naked plenty of times.  Me and Caleb even took baths together when we was younger, and he didn’t have a problem doin’ it, so I don’t think that stuff will bother him.”  

“Yes, but that might have been because you are brothers.  He might not feel the same way about the other boys seeing him naked.”

“Didn’t they lock the door?” 

“Nah, they thought they was home alone, cuz our mom had gone to the grocery store, and I think they might have been messin’ around too.” 

“You mean they was havin’ sex?” Jamie asked. 

“Nah, just touchin’ each other’s dicks and checkin’ them out.” 

“Do you think your brother is gay?” Glen followed.

“Ok, then I guess he can come here with you, as long as your parents don’t mind and he agrees not to tell them about the nudity and sex.” 

“I don’t think my mom and dad will have a problem with him comin’ with me, cuz they both work.  If I wasn’t there to watch him then they’d have to pay somebody to do it, but they won’t need to do it if he comes here with me.” 

“So you mean they’re payin’ somebody to watch him now?” 

“I’m sure they wasn’t while my dad was out of work, but I don’t know what they’re doin’ now that my dad’s got another job.” 

“Ok, then I’ll plan on him coming here with you, as long as it’s ok with your parents.” 

After the boys finished their ice cream and soda, they decided to watch a movie next.  They asked me to join them, but I politely declined. 

“I’d love to, but there’s something else I need to do first.  I’ll join you just as soon as I’ve finished.” 

After the boys headed to the family room, I went up to my room, shut the door, and locked it.  I then made several phone calls as I tried to arrange a little surprise for them.  It wasn’t easy to pull this off and I had to call in a few favors to make it happen, but eventually all of the pieces started to fall into place.  However, it had taken me so long to do it that the movie was more than half over by the time I returned to join them again. 

“What took you so long?” Dakota demanded. 

“I ran into a few problems, so it took me longer than I’d anticipated.” 

“So what were you doing?” Glen wanted to know. 

“It was something I needed to take care of, but nothing that you need to know about.” 

“Damn, why can’t you ever just answer our questions,” Dakota groaned. 

“I do most of the time, but you don’t need to know everything I do, so get used to it.” 

“Yeah, quit buggin’ him,” Laine interjected.  “He does lots of stuff for us and we don’t need to know everything if he doesn’t want us to.” 

“Yeah, ok,” Dakota relented. 

Fortunately, most of our discussion had taken place during a commercial, so I sat down on the sofa to watch the rest of the movie with them.  Dakota was on my left, Glen on my right, Jamie on my lap, and Laine was sitting on the floor between my legs.  During the next commercial, I decided to mention something else I’d just thought of. 

“Laine, if your brother comes here with you next summer then where is he going to sit?”  The boys all looked at me for a few seconds before anyone responded. 

“He can have my place if he wants to sit next to you,” Glen offered. 

“That’s very generous and grown up of you.” 

“Yeah, but I’ll be older and he should be with you cuz he’s younger.” 

“Yeah, me and Glen will sit in the chairs and the rest of you can sit together,” Laine concurred. 

“I’m glad you boys are acting so mature, but we don’t even know if Laine’s brother will want to do that.” 

“Oh, I think he will,” Laine confessed.  “He’s always tryin’ to get my dad’s attention, so he’ll prob’ly do the same thing with you.” 

“Ok, if it’s what he wants,” I agreed, and then we went back to watching the end of the movie, seeing this problem had been solved.  

When the movie ended, the boys decided that they wanted to go for a swim, so I agreed to do it with them.  We all went up to our rooms to put on our swimsuits, and then we walked down to the pond.  This time Jamie jumped in at the same time I did, and this proved to me that he was gaining confidence in his ability, but only as long as I was nearby.  It was definitely a step in the right direction. 

After being in the water for an hour and a half, we eventually agreed it was time to get out, and as we were walking to the house I decided to mention something to them. 

“I want you to shower quickly and then dress in something nice, because I’m going to take you out to dinner.” 

“How come?” Glen asked. 

“Let’s just say it’s a celebratory dinner in recognition of today’s good news.  Besides, if I take you out to eat then I won’t have to spend time working over a hot stove or oven.” 

They all agreed to do as I asked, and Dakota and Jaime showered with me, while Glen and Laine each used one of the other bathrooms.  As soon as we were all dressed, we hopped into the SUV and that’s when I asked my next question. 

“How would you like to go to my favorite steakhouse tonight?”  

“Does that mean we’re gonna have steak?” Jamie asked. 

“Yes, because I thought you’d all enjoy it.  Don’t you like steak?”

“I don’t know if I like it, cuz I’ve never had steak before.”  

“Me neither,” Dakota confessed, “cuz my stepdad never wanted to spend that much money on steaks.  My mom would ask him if she could buy some once in a while and he would never let her.  He’d just say hamburger meat is close enough to steak and good enough for us.” 

“I see, and if you like hamburgers then you’ll probably love steak.  Don’t worry about never having it before, because I’ll help you pick out a steak that you’ll like.” 

They seemed fine with this, seeing I’d just solved any problems they might have had, so I drove to the steakhouse and we went inside.  We had a slight wait before we were seated, and once we were taken to a table we ordered our drinks first and I ordered an appetizer for all of us to share.  I then made a suggestion to Jamie and Dakota about what they should have. 

“I think you’ll enjoy the rib eye, strip steak, or the filet mignon, so I suggest you order one of those.” 

“What’s the difference?” Jamie asked. 

“It’s basically about where on the cow the particular cut comes from, but they’re all very good.”

“What are you gonna have?” Dakota countered. 

“I’m going to have the filet mignon.” 

The boys quickly looked at the menu and then their mouths dropped open.  “But that’s expensive,” Dakota gasped. 

“Don’t worry about the price, because this is a celebration.  In fact, I think we should all order that.” 

“Are you sure, cuz we’ll be fine with one of the other steaks,” Laine countered. 

“If you don’t mind, I’d really like to order the filet mignon for each of us and I think you’ll really enjoy it.”  After chatting amongst themselves briefly, they finally agreed.  “That’s great, and now I just need to help you decide on how you want it cooked.  I know this won’t apply to Dakota and Jamie, seeing they’ve never had steak before, but have either of you ever had your steak cooked so it was still red or pink in the middle?” 

“Nah, my mom said it wasn’t good for us to eat it that way,” Glen answered. 

“I don’t think I’ve ever eaten it that way either, but I’m willing to try it like that if it’s how you like it.” 

“If you’ve never eaten it that way before, I think you should have your steak cooked a little more than what I do.  I like my steak medium-rare, which means it’s warm and pink in the center with a little red, but I think you should order your steaks medium, so it’s only slightly pink in the middle.” 

“Ok, I’ll do that,” Laine agreed. 

“Yeah, me too,” Glen concurred. 

“How about you two,” I asked Jamie and Dakota.  “Would you like to try it slightly pink in the middle or brown all the way through?”

“Brown,” they both agreed. 

We then talked about the type of potato they wanted with it, and Laine and I opted for the baked potato while the other three went with mashed potatoes, and we all had a salad to go with it.  I let the boys tell the server which dressing they wanted on their salad, and then I let the server know that one of the steaks with the baked potato was to be medium-rare while the other was medium.  I followed that up by letting her know that one of the steaks with the mashed potatoes was medium, while the other two were medium-well. 

Once that had been decided, each of the boys grabbed a roll and one of the mozzarella sticks that I’d ordered.  We enjoyed those items and they tided us over until our entrees were delivered, and then I had the boys cut their steaks in half to make sure they were done the way they wanted.  As soon as everyone was satisfied, we began to eat. 

“Man, I’ve never had a steak this tender before,” Laine announced. 

“It’s one of the best cuts you can order, and some people claim it’s the very best.  Other people like one of the other steaks better, but this is definitely my favorite.” 

“Yeah, it’s really good,” they all agreed.

When we finished eating, I had the boys order their desserts to go, since we all needed to let our meals settle first.  After talking it over, the boys decided they wanted to share desserts, so they could enjoy more than one.   Dakota and Jaime ordered chocolate cake and banana cream pie to share, Laine and Glen chose the chocolate cake and apple strudel to split, while I opted for the cheesecake.  I paid the bill while we were waiting for the desserts to arrive, and then we carried them out to the SUV so we could enjoy them at home. 

When we got back to the house, we changed into something a little more comfortable first, and then we sat around and chatted about our meal. 

“That steak was excellent.  Thank you for taking us there and buying it for us,” Laine began. 

“Yeah, that was really good,” Jamie added.  “I’m glad you made me try it.” 

“I’m glad I did too, especially since you enjoyed it.” 

“After seein’ the prices on the menu I know why my stepdad never wanted to let my mom buy steaks for us,” Dakota confessed.

“Yes, they’re definitely more expensive than buying hamburger,” I replied, “but the prices are a lot cheaper in the grocery stores than they were on the menu.  It’s much cheaper to buy them at the store and then cook them at home.”  

“Then we shoulda done that,” Glen offered. 

“Not this time, because today was a celebration and a special treat, but I will definitely buy steaks we can cook here as well, now that I know how much you all like steak.” 

“So what are we gonna do tomorrow?” Dakota followed. 

“I’m not sure yet, but I’ll be spending some time over the next few days getting things ready for the adoption, and I want to make sure you all pick out something nice to wear to the ceremony.  I want you to look really good in court so you’ll impress the judge.  I don’t want him to change his mind about letting us do this because he thinks I’m not taking good care of you.” 

“He wouldn’t do that, would he?” Glen challenged. 

“He might, if he thought I wasn’t a responsible parent, and I don’t want to take that chance.” 

“We don’t either,” Jamie confirmed. 

“So what else can we do?” Dakota pressed.  “Are we gonna ride on the four-wheelers again?” 

“I think it would be wiser to wait until after the ceremony before we do that again.  I don’t want to take the chance that any of you might get injured and then wind up appearing in court wearing bandages or a cast.” 

“Yeah, that wouldn’t be good,” Laine agreed.

“So what are we gonna do instead?” Glen asked next. 

“You could always double up on the time you spend working with the educational software and reading, seeing you won’t have time to do it while we’re in court.   We can also go swimming and I could order an on demand movie for us to watch.” 

“What’s the difference between that and the movies we usually watch on TV?” Jamie asked. 

“On demand movies are newer releases that haven’t been shown on TV before.” 

“Oh, ok.  That sounds good.” 

“So what are we gonna do after we get adopted?” Dakota pressed. 

“I have a couple of ideas, but I need to think about them a little more before I make up my mind.” 

“What are the choices?” Glen followed. 

“I’d rather not tell you yet, because it would ruin the surprise.” 

“I knew you were gonna say that,” Dakota shot back. 

“What’s the matter?  Don’t you boys like surprises?” I challenged. 

“Yeah, but it can be frustratin’ too,” Dakota replied.

“But isn’t it usually worth it in the end?”

“Yeah, I guess so,” they all confessed. 

“Then quit your complaining and learn to have a little patience.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.” 

“Ok, if you say so,” Jamie concurred.

“So can we do something fun now?” Glen asked next. 

“It depends.  What do you have in mind?”

“Can we have sex?  I haven’t done nothin’ with you in a few days.” 

“What exactly are you asking me to do?”

“Uhhh, would you fuck us?”

“There’s no way I can do that with all of you.” 

“Then just do it to me.” 

I glanced over at Dakota quickly to see how he was reacting to this.  He had a scowl on his face, but when he saw me looking at him his expression changed and he merely shrugged his shoulders.  A few seconds later it changed again and nodded in resignation just before Laine spoke.

“Dad, have you ever had someone fuck you before?”

“I have, but I’ve haven’t had it done to me in a few years.” 

“Would you let me fuck you while you’re fuckin’ Glen?”

I looked over at Dakota again before I answered Laine, and I was surprised when he responded verbally this time. 

“Yeah, go ahead and then you can suck me and Jamie off afterward, but I want you to make love to me tomorrow night.” 

“Jamie, are you ok with this too?”

“Yeah, cuz I like it when you do that to me.” 

“Ok, then we can do what you want, but Laine you’ll have to take it easy on me and go slow, because I haven’t done this in quite a while.”   

“Yeah, ok.  I will.”

“Can we do it in your shower again?” Glen asked next. 

“Yeah, let’s do it in there,” Laine concurred. 

“Rather than in my bed?” I countered. 

“Yeah,” they both agreed.

“Ok,” I relented. 

“Me and Jamie will shower in one of the other bathrooms while you’re doin’ that then,” Dakota added.  “That way we’ll be nice and clean when you suck us off.” 

It seemed as if everyone was satisfied with this arrangement, but I stopped to grab something out of my nightstand before I followed Laine and Glen into the master bathroom.  After I’d adjusted the water, we stepped into the shower and got ready to begin.
