Chapter 30 – It’s All Legal.

When we arrived back at the courthouse, we waited in the hallway outside of Family Court, and then a few minutes later Murray arrived to join us.  I chatted with him until our names were called and we were allowed to enter the courtroom, and then Murray led us up to the front and we took our seats there.  Laine followed us in, but he sat in the row behind us. 

“Murray Dann representing Dr. Eric Schultz, Your Honor,” he announced once we were all in place. 

“It’s nice to see you again and this shouldn’t take very long, since I’ve spoken with each of your clients already.  The reason we are here today is to address Dr. Eric Schultz’s request to adopt three young men: Dakota Andrew Frost, James Jeffrey Palmer, and Glen Oliver Wittes.  The interviews have been completed and the reports filed and read, and the court finds that everything is in order.  So if you will all please rise I will make this official.” 

The boys and I stood up, along with Murray, and the judge smiled at us before he spoke.  “Dakota Andrew Frost, you will now be known as Dakota Andrew Schultz.  James Jeffrey Palmer, you will now be known as James Eric Schultz, and Glen Oliver Wittes you will now be known as Glen Oliver Schultz.  Dr. Eric Schultz is now your legal parent and each of you are now legally his sons.  I wish to offer my sincerest congratulations to each of you.” 

The boys then moved in front of me and wrapped their arms around my body in a group-hug.  As I glanced up at the bench, I noticed the judge was smiling more broadly than before. 

“Bailiff, will you please hand these adoption certificates to those three young men so they will have proof that this matter is now official and they have a new father.”

Once the bailiff had given each boy his certificate, Murray directed us to follow him out of the courtroom, and Laine stood up and trailed behind as we walked into the hallway.  Once we were there, Murray stopped and spoke. 

“Congratulations.  I will immediately file the paperwork to request copies of the new birth certificates for each of the boys and I’ll send the forms to the Social Security Office to notify them of the name changes.  I’ll mail the new birth certificates and Social Security cards to you as soon as I receive them from the state and federal governments, along with the bill for the remainder of my services.” 

“Thank you for all your help, Murray.  You’ve been an invaluable asset.” 

“I’m glad I was able to assist you with the various matters and I wish each of you the very best in the future,” he added before he left to return to his office. 

“Is that all there is to this?” Laine asked while looking slightly puzzled.  “I thought there would be a lot more to the ceremony, since you had to make all those trips into the city to meet with people so you’d be able to adopt them.” 

“Yes, they made us jump through hoops to be able to do this, but then it all boiled down to a simple pronouncement that each boy now had a new name and a new father.” 

“Damn, I thought they’d make a bigger deal out of it,” Laine persisted.

“We’re just glad we’re his sons now,” Jamie chimed in to let Laine know that he was satisfied with the simple process.

“Yeah, me too,” Dakota confirmed.  “So are we going home now, Dad?”

“Not quite yet.  I’ve decided that as long as we’re already in the city that I should take care of another task that I believe requires my attention.” 

“What task is that?” 

“You’ll see.” 

“Dang, you did it to me again.” 

“Only because you haven’t learned yet, but I’m glad you said dang instead of damn.  You boys will have to stop swearing before school starts, because I don’t want you slipping up there.  If you do, then it will reflect poorly on how I’m raising you.” 

 “Ok, we’ll try not to do that any more,” they all concurred.

As soon as we got in the SUV, each of the boys showed me, Laine, and each other the certificates of adoption with their new names on it, listed along with mine. 

“I like how it looks,” Dakota stated as he held his certificate in front of my face. 

“I do too, so put it somewhere safe for now, because I don’t want it to get ruined before we get home.  I suggest the rest of you boys do the same thing.” 

The other boys quickly decided to hand their certificates to Dakota as well, and then he placed all of the certificates behind the sun visor until we got home.  Once that had been taken care of, I made sure the boys were all buckled in before I started the SUV, and then I drove out of the courthouse parking lot.  I think the boys were mildly surprised when I pulled into the mall a short time later, especially when I drove to the parking area in front of the same electronics store that we had frequented previously. 

“What are we doing here?” Glen asked as I was pulling into a parking space. 

“I’ve decided to purchase a game system for you boys, since you don’t get to play very often on the computers.  The four of you are spending a considerable amount of time working with the educational software, and this way the other two can still play games while the others are working on the computers.” 

“Great, so are you gonna get an Xbox or PS4?” Dakota followed. 

“I’m not sure.  Which would you boys prefer?” 

They quickly discussed this amongst themselves, but there was a difference of opinion as to which was better.  Since I had to admit that I didn’t know very much about either one, I would rely on an expert’s opinion. 

“I’ll ask the salesperson for his professional advice as to which system is better,” I stated, and then we got out of the SUV and walked inside. 

I looked around until I spotted Bryan Ellis, the salesperson who had helped us with the computers, and then I led the boys over to where he was currently working with another customer.  We waited until he had finished up and then I addressed him. 

“Bryan, it seems that I require your help with another matter.”

“Oh hi, it’s nice to see you again.  What is it that I can help you with today?”

“I’ve decided to buy a game system for the boys, since they’re using the computers to work on other things, but there’s a disagreement on which one is best.  Would you recommend the Xbox or PS4?”

“They each have their devoted fans and both systems support many of the same games, including some of the most popular titles.  We could go into the technical differences between the two systems, but I think the biggest factor for you is that PS4 has some additional games that are very popular and exclusive to that system.” 

“So there are more games for the PS4?”

“Yes, including some games that I play frequently.”

“Ok, so how do you boys feel about getting a PS4 then?” I asked the troops directly. 

“That sounds good, as long as you can get Fortnite for it,” Jamie quickly replied.

“And I want you to get Spider-Man,” Dakota added. 

“If I might point out something,” Bryan offered, “I have a PS4 Slim system that comes bundled with Marvel’s Spider-Man game, and then you can buy Fortnite separately.”

“Ok, let’s do that then,” I agreed. 

“Are you going to hook it up to the TV in the family room?” Laine wanted to know next. 

“Hmmm, I think it would probably be better if it had its own TV.  That way we will avoid fights over whether someone will be able to use it to play games when someone else wants to use it to watch a show or a movie.”

Bryan was also happy to help me select a TV to go with it, so I told Laine and Glen to go choose a couple of other games, seeing Dakota and Jamie were getting what they wanted.  Bryan then pointed me to a good deal on a flat screen TV to hook the system up to, so we now had everything we needed.  Bryan also helped us to check out and loaded it all onto a cart that he wheeled out to the SUV. 

“Thank you very much for your help and sharing your expertise,” I told him as I slipped him a tip after we’d loaded everything into the back. 

“You’re very welcome and please look for me again if you need anything else.” 

“We definitely will.” 

We then hopped in the SUV and headed home, and along the way, Laine asked another question.  “So where are you gonna put this?” 

“I guess we can set it up in either Glen or Jamie’s bedroom this time.”

“You can put it in Jamie’s room then, cuz he’ll probably want to play Fortnite on it more than I’ll be usin’ it,” Glen suggested. 

“That’s very generous of you,” I said as I glanced at him in the rearview mirror.  “Is that ok with you, Jamie?” 

“Yeah, that sounds great.  Thanks, Glen.” 

When we got to the house I gave Dakota the key to the front door and then he grabbed the adoption certificates before he went ahead to unlock the door.  He held it open as I carried in the TV and took it up to Jamie’s room, while Laine followed behind with the PS4 and Glen carried the bag with the other games. 

It didn’t take very long for me to hook it up, and once I finished I made an announcement.  “How would you boys like to go out for Chinese tonight so I don’t have to cook?” 

“Ummm, will you help me pick out something to eat again, cuz I’ve never had Chinese before?” Jamie asked. 

“Of course I will.  They have a really nice buffet there and I’ll point out the items I think you’ll enjoy.  Ok?” 

“Yeah, cuz I know you’ll pick out stuff I like.” 

“Yeah, and then I’ll get the same things that you tell Jamie to get,” Dakota admitted. 

“Me too,” Glen chimed in. 

“So I take it that neither of you has eaten Chinese before?”  They both shook their heads in response. 

“My parents used to take us out to eat Chinese once in a while, so I already know the things I like,” Laine followed. 

“Ok, then let’s get back in the SUV and I’ll help these three again.” 

When we got to the Chinese restaurant, we were led to a table and seated, and then we ordered our drinks first, before getting up to go to the buffet table.  When we got there, I recommended that the boys take a sampling of each of the following items: Sesame Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, vegetable fried rice, and chicken lo mein. 

“Hey, that looks like spaghetti, but without the sauce,” Glen observed when he saw the lo mein. 

“Yes, Marco Polo brought the noodles back to Italy with him after he visited China, and the Italians added other things to it, such as tomato and Alfredo sauce.”

Before we went back to our seats, I also had them grab an egg roll and a cup of Wonton Soup.  Once we returned to our table, the boys began to chow down, but I noticed that Jamie, Dakota, and Glen were slightly tentative about sampling the various items at first.  That didn’t last long, however, because after tasting each item they soon began devouring everything on their plates and even went back for more.  When we finished our meals, the person waiting on our table gave each of us a fortune cookie before we left, and she also handed me the check.

“That was good,” Jamie stated as we were leaving.  “I knew you’d pick out a bunch of stuff I liked.” 

“Yeah, that was great.  Thanks, Dad,” Dakota followed. 

“I liked everything too,” Glen added. 

“And I was happy to do this, because I haven’t had Chinese since I left home,” Laine confessed. 

“I’m glad you all enjoyed it, and now I think it’s time for us to head back to the house.” 

While I was driving away, the boys decided to share the messages from their fortune cookies.  “Mine says ‘Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.’  What’s that supposed to mean?” Dakota blurted out. 

“Maybe it’s talkin’ about you guys getting’ adopted,” Laine offered. 

“Or maybe about you marryin’ Dad,” Jamie added. 

“Oh, then I got a great fortune,” Dakota confirmed. 

“Mine says ‘Don’t pursue happiness – create it.’  Could that mean that I created my own happiness by agreein’ to come live with Dad?” Glen followed. 

“Sounds right to me,” I responded.

“Mine fortune says ‘Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the conquest of it.’  What’s that mean?”

“I think it means that you showed a great deal of courage, as well as a great love of your brother by going out on your own so he would have more to eat,” I offered.  “All of you boys showed a tremendous amount of courage by striking out to live on your own.” 

“Ok, I guess that makes sense then,” Laine stated.

“What does your fortune same, Jamie?” Dakota pressed. 

“I’ve read it twice, but I don’t understand it.  It says ‘Success lies in the hands of those who want it.’  Do any of you know what that means?”

“I think it’s similar to what I told you boys about working with the educational software.  Those who will be successful in school in the coming years, as well as being successful in life, are those who spend the most time and work the hardest with those programs.” 

“Ok, then I’ll do it even more now,” Jamie confirmed. 

“What did your fortune say, Dad?” Dakota asked next. 

“Here, you can read it for me, because I don’t want to do it while I’m driving.” 

I handed the paper to him and he read it.  “It says ‘The real kindness comes from within you.’  I think that’s talkin’ about what you did for all of us.”

“Yeah, I don’t think we’d have ever found anyone else as kind as you,” Laine agreed.  “You brought us all here to live, spent a ton of money us, and then adopted those three, so your kindness definitely came from within you.”

“I suppose most of it came from how my parents raised me.” 

“And now we’ll try to be kind to others too, cuz that’s how you’re raisin’ us,” Jamie offered. 

“That would make me very proud of each of you.”

When we got back to the house, I asked the boys to go to the family room next, because there was something else I wanted to tell them.  They all looked confused as to why I was asking them to do this, but no one asked what it was about.  They were learning after all. 

“I have one more surprise for you, which I’ll tell you about now.  I’ve called in a few favors and got in touch with a few people that I knew but haven’t seen in a while to arrange a little surprise.  I’m taking all of you to Disney World during the first full week of August.” 

“Really?  Isn’t that gonna be expensive?” Glen asked. 

“It won’t be cheap, but I thought we should do this to celebrate being a family.” 

“This is gonna be awesome,” Jamie cheered. 

“Yeah, I’ve always wanted to go there,” Dakota confirmed, “but I knew my stepdad was too cheap to take us.”   

“So am I going too?” Laine asked. 

“Of course you are, and I want you to call your parents and ask if they will allow your brother to go with us.” 

“You wanna take Caleb too?” 

“Yes, and that way we’ll have a chance to get to know him before he comes here with you next summer.” 

“Wow, thanks.  Do you want me to call them now?” 

“Yes, I believe it’s still early enough, so I think this will be a good time to do that.” 

I then handed him my phone and he punched in the number.  A few seconds later I heard him speaking to the person on the other end. 

“Hi, Dad, it’s me, Laine.” 

After exchanging greetings and answering a few questions, Laine finally got down to the purpose of the call.  “Look, I called to ask you somethin’.  Eric, that’s the guy I’ve been stayin’ with, just told us that he’s gonna take us to Disney World during the first week of August and he said Caleb is invited to go with us.  So is that ok with you and Mom?” 

“Yeah, I know it’s expensive, but he wants to do this.  Ok, I’ll let you talk to him.”  Laine then handed me the phone.  “My dad wants to talk to you now.” 

“Hello, this is Eric Schultz,” I stated after taking the phone. 

“Ed Mueller here and I’d like to start off by thanking you for taking care of our son for us after he took off.” 

“It’s been my pleasure and he’s a great kid.” 

“Laine tells me you’re planning on taking him and the other boys to Disney World and that you’re inviting Caleb to join you.” 

“Yes, that’s correct.  I just adopted the other three boys and decided to take everyone to Disney World to celebrate.” 

“Ok, I guess I can understand that, but why do you want to take Laine and Caleb too?  That seems like an unnecessary expense.” 

“It’s because I can afford it and I’d really like to do this for all of them.  We’ve all grown very close to Laine while he’s been here, and I know he’s been missing his brother, so I thought we should take him with us as well.” 

“I’m afraid I can’t afford to offer you any money for you to do this.  I was out of work for quite a few months and have only recently started a new job and there hasn’t been enough time to catch up on our bills yet.” 

“I understand, and I wasn’t expecting you to chip in.  I’m doing this on my own.” 

“Are you sure you can afford it?  It’s got to cost you a pretty penny to take that many boys there.” 

“Yes, I’m sure I can afford it, and I’m hoping you will let both of your sons join us.  I’ve already reserved a large enough room at one of the hotels and I’ve also purchased the tickets, so it’s technically all paid for.”

“Wow, that’s very generous of you, but are you sure you’re going to be able to survive being alone with that many boys?” 

“Hey, I’ve put up with four of them for well over a month already, so I’m used to it.  Besides, I’m a school psychologist and used to being around a large number of children, so this won’t be a big deal.  I’m certain these boys won’t cause me any problems, because they’ve proven to be very cooperative and well behaved.” 

“I guess I’d forgotten that you were a school psychologist, but now I remember that the cop who visited us said you worked for a school district.  I’m also certain that my boys would never forgive me if I didn’t take you up on your very generous offer, so Laine said you’re planning to do this in August.” 

“Yes, it’s scheduled for the first full week of August, and if you don’t mind I’ll pick Caleb up on Thursday, the 2^nd.  That way he can spend the night at the hotel with us before we catch our flight to Orlando.” 

“Sure, that will be fine and we have a small suitcase he can use.  Should he pack anything in particular?” 

“Just have him pack several pairs of shorts, shirts, underwear, and socks, along with a swimsuit, flip flops, toothbrush, and comfortable shoes, because we’ll be doing a lot of walking.  We’ll be spending a day at each of the places there, including the Magic Kingdom, the Epcot Center, the Hollywood Studios, the Water Park, and the Animal Kingdom.  I figured we could always go back and spend more time at whichever of those places the boys liked best.” 

“And when will you be returning?”

“The following Saturday, the 11^th, so Caleb will be with us for the better part of ten days.  I’ll drop him and Laine off at your house shortly after we return.” 

“Wow that sounds like an exhaustive endeavor, but I’m sure the boys will love it.  My wife and I look forward to meeting you and thanking you in person when you stop by to get Caleb.”

“Ok, I’ll see you then and you’ll also have a chance to meet my sons as well.”

“I look forward to meeting all of you, and thank you again.  I’m not sure we would ever be able to do anything like this for our boys and I don’t know how we’ll ever be able to repay you.” 

“Just by letting them go with us, because I’m sure the boys will be thanking me multiple times while we’re away.  That will be all the repayment I require.” 

“Yes, I’m sure they will, and thank you for including both of our sons.”

“You’re welcome and we’ll have a chance to chat again when we pick up Caleb.” 

As soon as the call ended, Laine asked a question.  “So he’s gonna let Caleb go with us?” 

“Yes, he is.” 

“So how did you arrange for all of this already?” Dakota followed.  “I didn’t see or hear you doin’ anything like that.” 

“It’s because I did it when you boys weren’t around.  I started by calling a guy I went to college with, because he’s currently pretty high up on the Disney corporate ladder.  He helped me to make all of the arrangements and get the appropriate tickets, and he also reserved a two bedroom villa for us at the Disney’s Old Key West Resort.” 

“So we’re gonna be staying at one of the Disney World hotels that I’ve seen advertised on TV?” Glen asked. 

“Yes and the villa is like a small apartment with two bedrooms.  One has a king size bed, while the other one has two queen size beds.  It also has a common living area, dining area, and a kitchen, as well as two bathrooms and a washer and dryer.”

“So who will be in which room?” Jamie followed. 

“I’ll be in the room with the king size bed, and I figured Dakota would probably stay with me, and the rest of you will be in the other room.  I thought Laine and Caleb could share one bed, and that means you and Glen will be sharing the other bed.”

“K, we can do that,” they all agreed. 

“And you said we’d be flying there?” Laine followed. 

“Yes, it would take too long for me to drive there, so we’re going to fly.  Have any of you ever been on a plane before?”  They all shook their heads or said ‘no’.  “Then this will be another new experience for you, but I’m sure you’ll all do fine.” 

“Wow, this is gonna be just like the commercials I’ve seen on TV about goin’ to a Disney resort,” Jamie stated. 

“I hope it turns out even better than that, because I want this to be something you boys will always remember.” 

“I’m sure we will,” Laine comfirmed.  “So how are we gonna get Caleb?”

“We’ll drive to your parents’ house to pick him up, and then we’ll spend the night at a hotel fairly close to the airport.” 

“Then what are you gonna do with your car?” Glen asked.

“I’ll leave it in the long term parking lot at the airport, and then we’ll pick it up again when we get back.  I’ll drive you and Caleb home first, and then the rest of us will come back here.”

“It sounds great!” Dakota responded. 

“Yeah, it does,” the others agreed.

Now that we had gone over everything, we watched TV for a while first, before heading upstairs to get ready for bed.  I’m certain the boys will all be enjoying sweet dreams tonight.
