Chapter 33 – Evolving Relationships.

Over the next couple of days random thoughts of Michael would pop into my head from time-to-time, usually at the most inconvenient moments.  Even though I did my best to keep from thinking about him, I wasn’t always successful.  The first time that images of Michael slipped past my mental barrier was the following evening while I was making love to Dakota.  Certain things Dakota did reminded me of Michael, such as the way he cradled my face between his hands as we were kissing, and the next thing I knew I was consumed with visions of my former lover. 

Fortunately, I managed to keep Dakota from finding out that my focus wasn’t entirely on him, but it wasn’t easy.  One thing that worked to my advantage was the fact that I’ve never been one of those guys who would shout out his lover’s name in the middle of having sex.  I would use a pet name for him instead, and by doing so I never had to apologize or explain why I’d made such an inexcusable mistake.

I allowed him to do everything on his own and only watched to make sure he didn’t mess up, but he did a great job.  He was almost done when the other three boys came downstairs, so I started making toast.  While I was doing that, Dakota and Glen set the table and Jamie poured the drinks, and he also took the butter and jelly out of the refrigerator.  After Laine and I carried the platters of food to the table, we all sat down to enjoy the meal together. 

“Laine did this totally on his own today,” I announced to let the others know. 

“It’s really good,” Glen confirmed.  “It’s just as good as when Dad makes this stuff.” 

Laine smiled and sat up a little straighter after hearing this comment. 

“Yeah, it’s really good,” Jamie concurred. 

“Now I want to learn how to make other stuff too, like pancakes and French toast,” Laine announced.  “I might even start helping Dad fix dinner, if he’ll let me.” 

“We’re kind of short of time for you to do that, seeing we’ll be going away for quite a few days, but I’ll teach you as much as I can before you leave.  We’ll start with a few simpler meals, though.” 

“That’s ok, as long as it’s something I can fix at home too.” 

“Of course.”

When we finished eating, we cleared off the table, rinsed the dishes, and washed the pans afterward, and then the boys went upstairs to work on the computer and play video games.  They’d been upstairs for over an hour when I heard a vehicle coming up the driveway, so I looked out the window to see who or what it was and it turned out to be the UPS truck.  The boys had obviously heard it too, because a few seconds later they were all standing at the top of the stairs. 

“There’s a delivery truck outside,” Glen announced.  “Does that mean you ordered somethin’?”

“Yes, I bought each of you a suitcase for the trip and I’m sure that’s what he’s delivering.” 

When I opened the door, the UPS man was carrying two fairly large boxes, but they didn’t appear heavy, and he set them down on the porch before returning to his truck to get two more.  When he returned, he set those down on the porch as well and handed me his device to sign for them, and then he left. 

“Ok you guys, I want you to help me bring these inside and then we’ll see who wants which one.  They’re all identical, just in different colors.” 

The boys helped to carry the various boxes into the great room and then they opened them for me and pulled out the suitcase that was packed inside.  Once they were all sitting on the floor, I was about to ask who wanted which one when Jamie spoke first. 

“Is this one blue or green?  I can’t tell.” 

“The color is called teal, which is a bluish-green.”

“Can I have that one then?” 

“Is it ok with the rest of you?”  They all nodded that it was.  “Ok, then the teal suitcase is yours.” 

“I want the blue one,” Dakota stated next. 

“Do either of you have a problem with that?” I asked Laine and Glen and they merely shook their heads in response.  “Ok, then that one’s yours.” 

“Which one do you want?” Glen asked Laine. 

“You pick and I’ll take whatever one is left.”

“Are you sure?” 

“Yeah, cuz I’ll probably be leaving it here when I go back home.” 

“No, you’ll be able to take it with you,” I corrected.  “Whichever one you end up with is yours to keep.” 

“Ok, but I still want Glen to choose.” 

“Then I’ll take the red one,” Glen stated with a smile. 

“That leaves me with the black one,” Laine replied. 

“Actually, that color is called charcoal and those were the only colors available.” 

“It’s all good and I’m just happy you got me one too, seeing I’m not gonna be staying here,” Laine stated. 

“Even though you’ll be leaving, you’d still need something to pack your clothes in for the trip, and you can also use it if you come back for a visit next summer.  I have a larger suitcase that I won’t be using and you can use that one to pack all of your other things.  You can leave it at your house when we pick up your brother, and then I’ll take it back when we drop the two of you off when we return from Florida.” 

“Ok, that sounds good.” 

“I didn’t buy your brother a suitcase because your dad said he had one that Caleb could use.” 

“Yeah, I’ve seen Dad use it when he had to go on trips for his old job and it’s a lot like these suitcases, ‘cept it’s brown, so Caleb will fit right in.” 

“I’m glad to hear that.”

Now that this was settled, the boys carried their suitcases up to their rooms and went back to whatever they were doing.  Once they took off, I broke down the four boxes and carried them out to the shed.  I’d store them there in case we needed them later, because I could always tape them up again if we required a box or two for something else. 

Once that was taken care of, I decided to do more laundry, because we’d be leaving in five more days.  Once the first load was in, I went upstairs to see how the boys were doing, and while I was there, I took my two suitcases out of the closet.  I then carried the larger one over to Laine’s room so he could start packing the clothes he wouldn’t be using again before he left. 

“Pack up anything you don’t think you’ll need in this suitcase, so it won’t take you so long later.  We’ll have a lot going on over the next few days, so you might as well do as much as you can now to save time later.  In fact, all of you boys can start packing too,” I called out loudly enough for the others to hear, “and that way you’ll be able to discover if you need me to wash anything else or buy something for this trip.” 

“Yeah, ok, we can do that,” they called back.

I returned to my room and started packing for the trip as well, and I was also making a list of the things I would need to add at the last minute, such as my razor, deodorant, toothbrush, and toothpaste.  I’d still be using those items until then, and by making a list it would help to make certain I didn’t forget anything, a long with discovering what other things I might need. 

We only took a short break for lunch, and later Laine came down to help me fix dinner.  Since he wanted to learn how to do this, I decided we’d start off with a meatloaf, potatoes au gratin, and whole kernel corn.  After I had him preheat the oven, I showed him how to follow the recipe to prepare the meatloaf, and then we used a box mix for the potatoes.  We followed that up with boiling a pan of water to cook the frozen corn, and although it wasn’t very difficult to do any of these things, Laine was thrilled that I was allowing him to do it.  The others were also very complimentary about what he’d accomplished and told him so as they were chowing down. 

We changed to go swimming about a half hour after we’d finished cleaning up from dinner and then we spent about an hour in the pond.  As soon as we agreed it was time to go back to the house, Jamie asked a question. 

“Can I shower and sleep with you tonight, Dad?”

I glanced over to gauge Dakota’s reaction, but he answered Jamie for me.  “Yeah, go ahead, cuz I’m gonna spend the night with Laine.  I wanna spend some time with him before he leaves.” 

This came as a total surprise to me, but I didn’t have a problem with it.  I merely told Jamie that it appeared as if he was with me tonight, and then Dakota asked if he and Laine could use my shower first.  As soon as I told them it was ok, they raced ahead to the house so they wouldn’t hold us up too badly.  Jamie and I followed behind at a more leisurely pace, and Jamie wrapped his arm around my waist as I placed mine around his shoulders.  Glen walked on my other side, and before we reached the house, he made a comment. 

“It looks like I’m gonna be the only one sleepin’ alone tonight,” he said sounding slightly depressed. 

“You can shower and sleep with us,” Jamie offered.  “You can sleep on the side where Dakota usually sleeps and Dad can suck us both off before we go to sleep.” 

“Is that ok with you, Dad?” Glen asked.  It seemed as if he wanted me to confirm that I was ok with Jamie’s suggestion. 

“Sure, that will be fine.” 

“Thank you, both of you.  I appreciate you lettin’ me do this with you.” 

“Why wouldn’t I?  You’re my brother,” Jamie replied. 

“And you’re my son, so we aren’t about to leave you out.” 

Glen smiled and nodded as we entered the house and headed up the stairs.  Laine and Dakota were already in the shower by the time we got there, so we merely took off our swimsuits and waited for them to finish.  When they came out a few minutes later, they paraded past us naked as they headed down the hallway, but I wasn’t sure if they were going to Laine or Dakota’s room.  I suspected they would probably end up in Laine’s room, seeing Dakota didn’t use his very often, but I didn’t dwell upon that fact for very long before I followed the other two into the bathroom and adjusted the water. 

“Will you wash both of us first?” Jamie asked. 

“Would you like me to do that for you too?” I asked Glen. 

“Yeah, that would be nice,” he confirmed.

I called Laine down later, when I was ready to fix dinner, and this time I had him help make spaghetti and meatballs.  We didn’t do it from scratch and merely used a jar of spaghetti sauce and a bag of frozen meatballs instead.  I had him pre-heat the oven before I placed the meatballs on a pizza pan to cook them first, and then I showed him how to judge when the spaghetti was ready so he didn’t undercook or overcook it.  I also showed him how to prepare the bowls of salad for everyone, and then I had him heat up a couple loaves of frozen garlic bread in the oven, and he was happy with what we did.  The other boys were pleased with the meal and made sure to let Laine know it. 

After cleaning up the kitchen afterward, Laine and I watched TV with the other boys until we headed up to bed.  As I was turning off the TV later, Laine informed me that he was going to spend the night with me again.  After we entered my bedroom, Laine told me something else.
