Chapter 40 - Magic Kingdom: Day 2.

When we woke up the next morning, I rolled onto my back and just laid there for a couple of minutes before getting out of bed.  During that time, Glen rolled toward me and smiled before he spoke.

Thanks, for doin’ that.  It was nice.”

I’m glad you enjoyed it, but the other times you slept with me you didn’t seem to want to make bodily contact, so I wasn’t sure if you’d enjoy doing this.”

I know, but I liked it and want to do it again sometime, if that’s ok with you.”

Certainly, we can do it any time you sleep with me.”

Thanks, and I think I might try doin’ it with Laine before we leave here too.”

I hope you’ll let me know how that works out then.”

Ok, I will.”

I then went to wake up the other boys and asked them to help each other with the sunscreen again before getting dressed.  Once we were all ready, we went to eat breakfast.

Do you want us to do like yesterday and eat a lot?” Glen asked before we ordered.

No need, because this time we’ll be eating both meals in the same area, since it’s where we’ll be spending the day.”

We then enjoyed our breakfast before making our way over to catch the bus to the Magic Kingdom.  This time we went to the other side of the park and headed to Fantasyland first.  As soon as we got there, I took them on the Mad Tea Party ride.

This doesn’t look very exciting,” Glen mumbled.

Maybe not, but I wanted you to experience it because it’s modeled after the original 1955 Disneyland attraction.”

But that was a long time ago and things prob’ly weren’t as excitin’ back then.”

They might not have had the technological advances that they have today, but they were very good at mechanical rides.  You can even control how fast the tea cup spins, so you can make it as exciting as you want.”

He finally relented and agreed to go on it with Laine and Dakota, so Jamie and Caleb rode with me.  Once the ride started, I watched as those three spun the tea cup as fast as it would go, and I was glad that Jamie and Caleb took it a little easier.  I was still slightly wobbly as I got out when the ride ended, and I laughed at the other three as they stumbled around briefly, but it didn’t last for very long before we moved on to the next ride.

I’ll give you a choice on whether you want to go on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.”

That sounds like another little kid’s ride,” Glen grumbled.

Yes, I’m sure it’s geared toward the younger crowd, but I thought if you used to be a Winnie the Pooh fan then you might like to do this.”

I read a bunch of the Winnie the Pooh books when I was younger,” Jamie replied.

And my mom used to read them to me,” Caleb added.

Yeah, she did the same thing when I was little too,” Laine confirmed.

Then I’ll leave it up to you.  If you decide to do this you will ride in a ‘hunny pot’ and get to see all of the characters from the Hundred Acre Wood, so do you want to go on this ride or not?”

I do,” Caleb quickly responded.

Yeah, me too,” Jamie agreed.

Ok, then we’ll go too, so they don’t miss out,” Glen relented.

The hunny pot can accommodate up to four passengers, so I suggest we go in groups of three.  If you don’t mind, I’ll take Jamie and Caleb with me.”

Yeah, then the three of us will go together,” Dakota confirmed.

I let Jamie and Caleb ride in front and I sat in the seat behind them, and when I looked back the others were doing the same thing.  Glen and Dakota were ridding in the front of that hunny pot, with Laine seated behind them, but I wasn’t sure if Laine did this by choice or to mimic what I was doing.  I’d gotten that same impression at other times as well, like whenever he ordered the same meal I did or would mimic what I was doing on other rides.  It could be what he was up to, and it’s said that mimicry is the highest form of flattery.

The ride proved to be interesting and we got to see nearly all of the characters from the stories, including Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Gopher, Kanga, Roo, Eeyore, and Tigger.  Our hunny pot seemed to bounce along with Tigger at one point, and there was also a soundtrack, so we heard their voices as well.  The soundtrack also included songs from some of Pooh’s most memorable adventures, and we even entered Pooh’s dreams and saw him fighting off the honey stealing Heffalumps and Woozles.  It was cute, although maybe not exciting enough for the older crew, but I’m still glad we did this.

I hope the next ride is more excitin’,” Glen stated as we joined forces again.

Yes, I think you’ll like it.  We’re going on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train next, which is actually a roller coaster.”

Yeah, that sounds more like it.”

We could see the Seven Dwarfs cottage as we walked along the path to enter the mine and get on the ride.  The cars we rode in resembled mine carts and I suggested that Jamie and Caleb ride together so they wouldn’t get crushed as badly this time.  Dakota got in next to me, and then the other pair rode together as we took off.

The first part of the ride was quite thrilling with the many twists, turns and drops, but then as soon as we entered the mine we slowed down to a crawl.  The cars even tilted from side to side to simulate riding in a mine cart, and we got a chance to see the dwarfs using pickaxes to mine the brightly colored gems.  We also heard them sing their theme song Heigh-Ho as we started moving again, and once we exited the mine we went on another thrilling burst of speed through more twists, turns, and drops.  Just before the ride ended it slowed down again, and when this happened we got a chance to look inside the cottage and could see Snow White dancing with the dwarfs as they sang their Yodel Song.  As we were pulling away, you could see an imminent threat waiting just outside the cottage door.

It wasn’t as good as Thunder Mountain, but it was still fun.”  Glen admitted as we were leaving.

And I got to see all of the dwarfs and Snow White,” Caleb stated gleefully.

And I liked it when they sang: Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, it’s off to work we go…” Jamie sang in tune.

Yeah, it was pretty neat,” Laine agreed.

So what’s next?” Glen followed.

We’re going on the Peter Pan Flight?”

Is that exciting?”

I’m not sure.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

I’m sure it wasn’t as exciting as Glen would have liked, but I could tell Jamie and Caleb enjoyed it.  We loaded into two-person flying ships and glided over many of the scenes from Peter Pan, from the streets of Victorian London to various locations in Neverland.  I also enjoyed this little blast from the past, but now it was time to move on.

As soon as that ride ended, I advised the boys what was next on the agenda.  “The Dumbo ride is coming up, but I’ll give you a choice about whether you want to go on it.”

It looks a lot like the Magic Carpet ride in Adventureland,” Dakota pointed out.

Yeah, and we didn’t go on that one and I don’t wanna go on this one either,” Glen quickly followed.

Do all of you want to skip this ride then?”  Each of them nodded in agreement.  “Ok, and since this entire area looks as if it’s geared toward the younger kids, let’s head over to Tomorrowland.”

The first attraction we came to was the Tomorrowland Speedway and the boys seemed to perk up when they saw the sign.  “Is this a go kart track?” Laine asked.

Not exactly.  The cars are on tracks to prevent accidents, but you can control the speed.”

That’s lame, so let’s skip this one too,” Glen suggested.

You boys might not enjoy it as much, since you’ve all driven go karts and four wheelers before, but Caleb would probably enjoy doing it.  I’ll tell you what, if you will agree to go on this ride for Caleb’s sake, then we’ll go to Space Mountain next.”

What’s that?” Glen asked.

It’s a roller coaster that’s inside a huge building, and I hear it’s pretty scary.”

Ok, we’ll do this then.”

Are you gonna drive one of those cars too?” Dakota asked.

I might ride with Caleb to make sure he does ok, but I won’t do it alone,” I answered as we entered and looked around.

There are just four lanes,” Laine pointed out, “so what if we all go at the same time and I’ll ride with Caleb to help him out.  That way we’ll only need four cars so we can do it together.”

Actually, that’s a great idea and I’ll sit in the grandstands and watch.”

I was glad he’d suggested this, because I really didn’t want to squeeze into one of the cars with Caleb, but I was willing to do it so he could have the experience.  The cars use gas engines, but the fastest they can go is 7.5 mph (12 kph), and I hope none of them get stuck behind a slower driver, because it might ruin the experience for them.  Fortunately, Caleb met the minimum height requirement to drive, so they waited in line for their chance to do this.

When they got to the front they had to let one of the kids behind them jump ahead so they could all go at the same time.  When they finally climbed into their vehicles, they started out together.

Actually, it worked out better than I expected.  Caleb and Laine had loaded into the first car and ended up having a fairly clear path from start to finish.  Jamie got in the second car, and to his chagrin there was a slower driver in his lane so he had to slow down to avoid running into him.  Dakota and Glen were in the next two lanes, and they didn’t run into problems until near the very end, and then they had to slow down to avoid the traffic jam.  This meant Caleb ended up beating the others, much to his delight.

That was fun and I won,” he announced when I went to meet up with them after the ride ended.

Yes, you did.”

I wish I coulda steered too, but it was fun bein’ able to go as fast as I wanted.”

I believe you have that in common with your brother,” I joked.

Hey!  So I liked to push it a little when we were on the go karts,” Laine responded.

Yes, and obviously your brother did the same thing on this.”

True to my word, I took them to Space Mountain next.  I was glad that I’d used our FastPass+ here, because the line was enormous.  When doing my research before we left, I discovered which rides I should use the FastPass+ on, and I’m glad I did because the posted wait time in line would have been around an hour.

Neat,” I heard the boys say as they viewed the star themed ‘windows’ as we made our way up to the second level.

When we got to the front of the line, we quickly discovered there were two rockets joined together, each with three seats – one behind the other.  This meant we had to do a little jockeying around with the others waiting in line so we could all ride together.  Once we were in our rocket, we started off by passing through a strobe tunnel and its pulsing lights.  It reminded me of the effect that was used in Star Trek shows and movies whenever the Enterprise went into warp drive.

When we reached the end of the tunnel it suddenly became dark, except for the faux stars overhead, and then we made a sharp turn before going up a steep incline.  I happened to notice that there were decals on the side of our rocket that glowed in the blacklight, and I could also hear a soundtrack playing as we went up the steep incline.  When we reached the top there was a quick drop, and then we hit a series of twists, turns, and more drops as we sped around the track in nearly total darkness.  There was another neat effect near the end of the ride when we went through another pulsing and swirling tunnel, and this attraction definitely lived up to everything I’d read about it.

Once we got out of the rockets, we passed some interesting displays as we made our way to the exit, and I was looking at those as the boys shared their impressions of this attraction.

Wow, that was awesome,” Glen gushed.

Yeah, that was incredible,” Dakota agreed.

Can we go on it again?” Laine asked.

Maybe later, but the line is way too long to do that right now.”

Oh, ok.”

Hey, these things are pretty cool,” Jamie added, referring to a couple of the displays.

And I like the robot too,” Caleb added.

Yes, that is pretty neat.”

After we left Space Mountain, Dakota asked a question.  “Can we get something to eat now?  I’m getting hungry.”

Wow, I’m amazed you’re the one asking me this, instead of Glen,” I teased.

I was havin’ too much fun on Space Mountain to think about my stomach,” Glen shot back, “but I’m hungry too.”

Good, then let’s head over to Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café for lunch.”

After checking out the menu and going through the cafeteria style line, we ordered.  Jamie and Caleb each got a foot-long beef hotdog topped with mac and cheese, while Glen ordered the foot-long beef hotdog covered in chili and cheddar cheese.  Dakota, Laine, and I all chose the grilled chicken club sandwich, and each of our meals came with French fries.  We also had a strawberry lemonade slushy to wash it down and S’mores for dessert, and as we ate the boys talked about what we’d done so far.

I liked Space Mountain the best and wouldn’t mind going on it again,” Laine reiterated.

We may, depending on the time situation,” I responded.

I liked going on the Seven Dwarfs Mine ride too,” Caleb added.

Yes, that was also good,” I confirmed.

So what are we gonna do next?” Jamie wanted to know.

I always take us on an easier ride after we eat, so we’ll be going on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover next.”

What’s that?” Glen asked.

It’s Walt Disney’s idea for a type of mass transit that might be used in the future to help move people around in cities, rather than having everyone driving cars, or riding in taxis or on buses.  It’s sort of like an open air train, but much smaller, and it will take us all around this part of the park on a raised track.  It travels around at a second story level, so we’ll be above the crowd.”

Is it the blue thing we saw when we were at Space Mountain?”

 “Yes, that would be it.”

After we finished eating, we took a nice leisurely ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover and enjoyed some lovely views of the park and other attractions as we went along.  When that ride ended, I took them to the Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress next.

Is this a merry-go-round?” Jamie asked.

Not exactly.  In this case we’ll be sitting in a theater that rotates around the stage to show different scenes of the progress the country has made since 1900.”

How will they do that?” Laine followed.

As each stage comes into view there will be a new scene with an animatronic representation of what life was like at that time.”

So they’re gonna go over every year since then?” Glen asked horrified.

No, they do it by jumping to different periods of time, because things don’t change very much on a year-to-year basis.  The progress is usually shown in twenty year intervals or longer.”

Ok, I was worried ‘bout that,” he stated, looking relieved.

When we arrived at that location, we went inside, took our seats, and got ready for the show to begin.  After a brief introduction, the first stage came into view and it depicted my great-great-grandfather’s generation at the beginning of the twentieth century, around 1900.  When that ended and the next stage came into view, it addressed my great-grandfather’s generation in the late 1920’s, and after that we jumped to my grandfather’s generation in the late 1940s.  The next jump was a huge one and we flashed forward to the present day when many household items have become voice activated.  Seeing how far we’ve come makes you wonder what the future still holds.

Once the presentation ended, the boys had some comments and questions.  “Man, I can’t even imagine what it would have been like when there was no electricity in the houses or when there was only the radio to listen to,” Laine stated.  “It must have been pretty boring living back then.”

If you’ve never had something then you can’t miss it, so they merely adjusted to what they had.  They were happy to have radio, because it was more than what they had before, and life is what you make it.”

And what did that guy mean about havin’ indoor plumbing?” Jamie asked.  “Did he mean havin’ a kitchen sink and showers?”

That’s only part of it.  Before then there was no running water in the house, unless you were lucky enough to have a hand pump in the kitchen so they didn’t have to run outside to get buckets of water.  If they wanted hot water they had to heat it up on the stove, but that’s only part of what he was referring to.  Having indoor plumbing meant you also had toilets indoors too, because before that they had to go outside to use the outhouse, even in the winter.”

You mean like a porta-potty?”

It’s similar, but without the chemical smell, and the outhouse would have been made out of wood.”

Ouch, you could get a splinter then,” Jamie winced.

Sometimes they did, so they learned to be careful.”

And they would smell everyone else’s poop when they were in there, cuz it just dropped down into an open pit,” Dakota added.

So they even had to do that at night too, in the dark?” Caleb wanted to know.

Yes, until they went to bed.  They usually had a bedpan in their bedroom that they could use if they had to pee later, and then they would empty it in the morning.”

So you slept with that smell all night after you used it?” Glen followed.

It would seem so.”

I believe the boys were starting to appreciate how much better off they had it than previous generations, and now that our meals had time to settle, I led the boys over to the next attraction.  It was time for them to go on the Astro Orbiter, and as I led them there they were able to view it in operation, which prompted Glen to ask a question.

Isn’t this like the Dumbo and Magic Carpet rides too?”

Only in that it goes around in a circle, but this time you get to control how high the rocket you’re in actually goes.  And since the ride is so high up, you’ll also get some fantastic views of the park.”

Oh, ok.”

We had to take an elevator up to the loading area, and then we climbed into one of the two-person rocket ships.  It was a little awkward getting in and out of it, but it seemed to only affect me and wasn’t a problem for the boys, because they appeared to do just fine.  I suppose it was due to the fact that they were more limber than I was, primarily due to their age.

Caleb wanted to ride with me, and I think it was because of how high the ride would go.  For that reason, I let him control our rocket and choose if we stayed at the lowest level or if we went higher.  At first he didn’t make a move to make it go higher, but then after watching what the other boys were doing, our rocket started to rise up as well.  Before the ride ended, Caleb had our rocket at the very highest level it would go and I was impressed that he’d managed to conquer his fear.

Did you enjoy this?” I asked as the ride was coming to an end.

Yeah, and it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be.”

Why didn’t you tell me that you had a problem with heights?”

I didn’t want the other boys to know, cuz I thought they’d make fun of me.”

Have they done anything like that before?”

No, but I thought they might.”

I doubt they would have, but next time I want you to let me know if you’re having a problem with what we’re doing.”

K, I will.”

Once we left that ride, I took the boys to the Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin next.

So what’s the ride like?” Dakota asked as soon as I told them where we were going.

It’s supposed to be like an arcade game and you’ll be one of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Rangers.  You’re going to help him fight the evil Emperor Zurg and you’ll be riding in a two-person XP 37 space vehicle that you can control with a joystick to make it spin around.  You’ll each have a laser gun to do battle with, and you’ll shoot at targets to score points.”

Ok, that sounds like fun.”

Dakota wanted to ride with me this time, so Jamie went with Glen, and Caleb rode with Laine.  As we passed through the queue we learned that we had to aim at the Zurg emblems, a large Z in a geometric shape to score points, and certain shapes were worth more than others.  We were also told the smaller targets, along with those farther away and the ones that moved were also worth more points.  It seemed the boys were looking forward to this as we loaded into our vehicles.

I let Dakota sit in front and control the joystick, because I felt I’d have enough to do trying to hit the targets.  The ride went through thirteen different rooms, or battle scenarios that we fought our way through, and when the ride ended we were given our score.  It indicated how well we’d done and the level we reached, along with the rank we had earned.

How did you do, Dad?” Dakota asked as we were exiting the vehicle.

Level 3, Ranger 1st Class.”

I got to Level 4, Planetary Pilot.”

That’s probably because you were the pilot and spun us around.  It caused me to miss some of the targets, because I wasn’t prepared for when you did it.”

Oops, sorry about that.”

When we hooked up with the others again, I heard how they did as well.  “Glen made me keep missin’ the targets when he made us spin around,” Jamie complained.

I know, I had the same problem,” I commiserated as I glanced over at Dakota.

I only made Level 2, Space Ace,” Jamie added.

Me too,” Caleb confessed.

I made Level 4, Planetary Pilot,” Laine interjected.

Same as me,” Dakota concurred.

Then I guess I did the best,” Glen announced, “cuz I made Space Ace.”

Isn’t that the fifth out of the seven levels?” I asked.

Yep,” Glen confirmed with a grin.

The last ride was kinda like bein’ in the video games we play on the ‘puter and on the PlayStation at home,” Dakota stated.

Yeah, it was really neat.”

Can we go on it again?” Caleb asked.  “I wanna see if I can score better this time, now that I know what to do.”

Would the rest of you like to do this again?”

Yeah,” Jamie agreed.  “Caleb’s right and we should be able to score more points if we do it again.”

The others quickly concurred, so we got back in line to do this one more time, but I had a suggestion before we got started.  “Go in the same pairs, but let the other person control the joystick this time so the same person doesn’t get penalized again when the other person spins it around.”

Those who didn’t get to drive the last time liked this idea, while the others weren’t as happy about it.  However, after waiting in line for quite a while, we got a chance to do it again.

I hardly touched the joystick and merely concentrated on hitting the targets this time.  I think the other drivers were reluctant to spin their vehicle very often as well, so I assumed we would all score better this time around.  My suspicions were confirmed when we got together again afterward.

I made Level 3, Ranger 1st Class this time,” Caleb enthused.

“”Me too,” Jamie added just as excited.  “How about you, Dad?”

I got to level 4, Planetary Pilot.”

And I beat him again, and this time he couldn’t say he lost cuz I was drivin’,” Dakota stated.  “I got to Level 5, Space Ace.”

Yeah, I got that again too,” Glen confirmed.

Then I guess I beat all of you,” Laine followed, “cuz I got to level 6, so I’m a Cosmic Commando.”

Then we all did better and I’m glad to hear that.  So what would you like to do next, cuz we’ve been on all the rides now?” I asked.

Space Mountain,” they all shouted.

We had a long wait in line, but the ride was just as thrilling as before.  When it ended, Glen asked a question.

Is it time to eat again?”

Hmmm, isn’t this the same conversation we had the last time we were here at Space Mountain?”

Yeah, I guess all those dips and turns made us realize our stomachs were empty,” Laine replied.

Ok, but this time we’ll go to Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant to eat, so follow me.”

When we arrived there, we looked over the menu quickly and decided what we wanted to eat.  Jamie and Caleb chose the Chicken Strips with BBQ sauce, while Glen and Dakota selected the Angus Bacon Cheeseburger.  All four of their meals came with either apple slices or House-made chips, and the boys went with the chips.  Laine and I got the Chicken Caesar Salad, and we all had an all-natural lemonade slushy to drink, and a Rocky Road brownie for dessert.  I think we were all full by the time we finished our meal.

When we left the restaurant, I took them to the Monster Inc. Laugh Floor next, because I thought it would give our meals time to digest.  Even though it wasn’t what the boys considered ‘exciting’, it proved to be entertaining and we all enjoyed the show.  It took place onscreen using what they called digital puppetry, but the voices were provided by real actors.  This meant the monsters on the screen were able to interact with the audience, and there was a second, smaller screen to the left of the main screen that featured various audience members in a humorous light.  I think this was what the boys enjoyed the most, especially when I became one of the people featured.

I had lost my hat on our second go on Space Mountain and didn’t realize my hair got pretty messed up after that happened.  The boys never said anything about it at the time, or when we were eating, and it wasn’t something that crossed my mind, so I was a bit shocked when my image showed up on the smaller screen.

I soon became referred to as ‘that guy’ and became the focal point of some of the gags, such as when one of the monsters said, “I know how I’m going to dress up for Halloween… I’m going as that guy.”  At a different point another one said, “I know monsters are supposed to be scary, but are we as scary looking as that guy?”  The boys found this to be hilarious.  They also got a kick when they were featured on screen with me and the monster asked, “Are you boys with that guy?”  When they shouted back that they were, the monster said, “You must be very brave, because I wouldn’t want to be with that guy.”  The final time I was zinged by a monster was when one of them asked another monster, “Should we take up a collection to buy that guy a comb?”  Once again this was done to the boys’ delight.

I thought this show was gonna be terrible and boring,” Laine said when the show ended, “but it was pretty good.  I loved how they kept jokin’ with you.”

Yeah, they kept making fun of Dad and called him ‘that guy’,” Dakota stated and then laughed.

I liked when they asked if we was with him,” Jamie added.

Yeah, I liked seein’ us on the small screen,” Caleb concurred.

Do you boys want to keep making fun of me or do you want to go on another ride, because we’ve done everything I had on my list?”

Can we go back to where we were yesterday and ride on Big Thunder Mountain again?” Laine asked.  “We’ve already done Space Mountain twice today.”

Sure, we can do that if it’s what you boys want to do.”

Yeah, and we can go on Splash Mountain too,” Glen added.

Yeah, let’s do that,” the others concurred.

After I agreed, I knew we had a long walk to get there, so I suggested we stop to use the restroom along the way.  After I did my business, I took a minute to straighten my hair afterward.  I looked better now, but I knew it wouldn’t stay this way after we went on the rides again because I no longer had my hat.

I don’t wanna be in front this time,” Caleb announced when we came to Splash Mountain, seeing it was the first ride we came to.  “I don’t wanna get wet again.”

I see your point, but we filled up a log by ourselves, so someone has to sit in the front,” I countered, “but you can sit in the back seat this time.”

I’ll sit in front,” Glen offered.

And I will too,” Laine agreed.

Can I sit in back with Caleb?” Jamie asked.

Sure, that’s fine with me, so Dakota and I will ride in the middle again.”

Before long we were in a log and making our way up the various conveyers, and eventually we were going down the drops, including the big one near the end.  Once again the two in the front got soaked, while Dakota and I got slightly wet, and Jamie and Caleb stayed mostly dry.  We all had fun, though, and now we headed over to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

This time Jamie rode with me and Caleb sat next to his brother, with the other two sitting together as well.  The ride was exciting, but not nearly as much as before, and I attributed that to the fact that we’d been spoiled by riding on Space Mountain twice earlier.  Once this ride ended, we made our way over to the area where we’d catch the bus back to the villa, and then we settled in until we got to the resort.  It had been a fun day, and we still had two more days left before we headed home.
